Briggs Staying in Chicago
Last offseason, linebacker Lance Briggs tried desperately to get away from the Chicago Bears. The team used its franchise player tag to keep him off the free agent market but Briggs and agent Drew Rosenhaus went to the annual league meeting to attempt to generate trade interest, and got the Washington Redskins in pursuit but couldn't get a deal completed. When this year's unrestricted free agent market opened Friday and Briggs was available, it was generally assumed that he'd get out of Chicago quickly.
Wrong.
Briggs has agreed to a six-year, $36 million deal to remain with the Bears. The contract includes $13 million in guaranteed money.
When the market opened, the San Francisco 49ers were considered the favorite to sign Briggs. Many wondered if the Redskins would get involved again. But Briggs is staying with the Bears, something few would have predicted a few days ago.
