Favre Retiring

Quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire.

An NFL source confirmed reports that Favre informed Green Bay Packers Coach Mike McCarthy on Monday night that he has decided to call it a career. The Biloxi Sun Herald reported that Favre's brother Scott confirmed Brett's decision.

Favre, 38, has contemplated retirement after each of the past few seasons. This time, he is set to leave on a high note. He threw for 4,155 yards and 28 touchdowns this past season while leading the Packers to the NFC title game, which they lost to the New York Giants in overtime.

He said during Super Bowl week that his decision would be based on whether he could withstand the rigors of preparing for and playing another season.

"I think it's more: Am I willing to go through the journey, the ups and downs?" Favre said during an appearance in Phoenix during Super Bowl week. "What happens if we start off 4-0 or 0-4? How will I react? Do I want to put in the time in the offseason to prepare? That, more than anything, probably will play into my decision."

Favre threw an interception to set up the Giants' game-winning field goal in the NFC championship game, and he said at the Super Bowl that he "could care less" about whether the Giants or New England Patriots won in Phoenix. He said he thought the Packers had a "great year" that was "pretty remarkable" after going 8-8 the previous season and 4-12 the season before that.

"I would much rather be preparing for this game to play," Favre said in Phoenix. "But that's the way it goes. We put ourselves into a position going into the championship game that no one thought we'd be in.... It would have been nice to be here but it's not the end of the world."

In 17 NFL seasons, the last 16 of them with the Packers, Favre has thrown for 61,655 yards and 442 touchdowns. He reached nine Pro Bowls and won three most valuable player awards.

Backup Aaron Rodgers is in line to succeed Favre as the Packers' starter.

So who's now the favorite in the NFC North? Minnesota?

Could it be that Favre's retirement was triggered by news that Randy Moss would not be available to catch his passes?

Possibly -- or maybe he's retiring now because he just broke all of Marino's passing records and there are no significant individual acheivements left for him.

Football is forever improved for having had Brett Favre as a player for so many years. As much as I'll miss his exciting play, I'm glad that he is able to go out on his own terms. Thanks for everything, Brett. God bless.
