More Ominous Signs on Labor Front
PALM BEACH, Fla.--Roger Goodell said nothing today to debunk the notion that the owners are headed toward a labor confrontation with the players' union.
The NFL commissioner stopped short of saying the owners plan to exercise a reopener clause in the labor deal by the Nov. 8 deadline. But he said the owners have a "strong collective view" about the existing labor agreement, which guarantees the players 60 percent of total football revenues under the salary cap system.
"It's difficult for our clubs to keep up with what we have to pay the players by contract," Goodell said.
He said the economics of the league have "swung significantly toward the players" and that is a "big concern" for the owners.
"I think we knew the pendulum would swing in favor of the players," Goodell said. "I don't think anyone would tell you they knew it would swing as far as it has."
