Patriots, R. Moss Said to be Close to Deal
NFL sources say the New England Patriots are close to re-signing wide receiver Randy Moss.
Moss set a single-season league record with 23 touchdown catches this past season after being traded from the Oakland Raiders to the Patriots. He agreed to a restructured contract with a reduced salary as part of the trade but left himself eligible for unrestricted free agency this offseason. Under league rules, the Patriots could not rework Moss's contract for a second time in the same league year and thus could not re-sign him before last Friday, when new league year began and the free agent market opened.
When the Patriots did not use their franchise player tag on Moss last month, it was widely assumed that the club had a tentative deal with Moss in place. When no agreement was announced Friday, however, there were rumblings that Moss might sign with another team.
Now, though, it appears that Moss is likely to remain with the Patriots and a deal perhaps could be announced as soon as this afternoon.
