Was Fired GM Really to Blame for Broncos' Drought?

The Denver Broncos went 7-9 this past season. They have one playoff victory since quarterback John Elway retired following the franchise's second straight Super Bowl triumph at the conclusion of the 1998 season. They've made a string of questionable personnel moves in recent years, including the highly ill-advised use of a third-round draft choice on troubled running back Maurice Clarett in 2005.

You might say that the responsibility rests with Coach Mike Shanahan, who also has the title of executive vice president of football operations and has the final say over the team's player moves.

You, apparently, would be wrong, at least according to the way the Broncos view things.

While Shanahan continues to operate with the unwavering support of Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, the club announced Wednesday that it had fired Ted Sundquist as general manager. Shanahan said in a written statement that it was time for the organization to look in new directions. Other members of the front office are expected to take on expanded duties and no hirings are anticipated, at least not immediately.

Hey, it's fine with me if they keep Shanahan in there. The Donkos got beat by the pitiful Raiders last year. This could be a return to the Mac Speedie days...
