Pacman Jones Delays Petitioning For Reinstatement, Hoping to be Traded to Cowboys First
Suspended Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam (Pacman) Jones and his representatives have held off on making their latest bid for reinstatement by the NFL, hoping that Jones first will be traded to the Dallas Cowboys in the coming days.
The two teams have been negotiating for several weeks and the Cowboys reportedly upgraded their trade offer in recent days. They had been offering one draft pick, while the Titans reportedly had been seeking two choices over the next two drafts. The Titans also were seeking to have Jones reimburse them a portion of the signing bonus in his original contract, and Jones reportedly was willing to waive future payments due to him under the deal to try to satisfy that demand.
Jones has been suspended for the past year under the league's personal conduct policy. He and his attorneys had planned to petition NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday for Jones's reinstatement. But they held off, seeing if the trade to the Cowboys is completed first.
Goodell has said he will consider Jones's possible reinstatement before training camp. He also has said he's made no commitments about Jones's availability to the teams that have inquired about it, presumably including the Cowboys.
NFL rules permit Jones to be traded while suspended. If Goodell remains unwilling to reinstate Jones, Jones's lawyers might seek to have the terms of Jones's suspension eased.
Last season, the Cowboys signed former Chicago Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson, and Johnson played for the team after his eight-game suspension under the conduct policy expired.
