Players' Advisory Committee to Discuss Chiefs' Hair Proposal With Goodell

A group of players will meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell soon to discuss the Kansas City Chiefs' proposal to restrict players' hair length during games.

NFL Players Association chief Gene Upshaw said the members of the players' advisory committee will meet with Goodell to talk about the issue. Goodell and Upshaw formed the committee so that Goodell would have a readily available group of players with which to discuss issues facing the league. Goodell sought input from the advisory committee on the off-field behavior of players, for instance, before toughening the league's personal conduct policy last year.

Now comes the hair issue.

"We're going to meet with Roger to talk about that issue," Upshaw said.

It is not clear when the meeting will take place. It is likely that other issues also will be discussed at the meeting.

The Chiefs have proposed a rule that would prohibit a player's hair from covering his name or number on his jersey during games. Goodell, the NFL's competition committee and the franchise owners shelved the proposal at the recent league meeting, and Goodell said he wanted to receive input from players before the matter comes up for reconsideration.

The owners are scheduled to meet again in May. The proposal would have to be approved by at least 24 of the 32 teams to be enacted. To this point, the proposal has not been endorsed by the influential competition committee.
