Rams Can't Sign Their Pick Before Draft

I was asked here after the Miami Dolphins signed offensive tackle Jake Long on Tuesday to be Saturday's top pick in the draft whether the St. Louis Rams, who have the No. 2 choice, now are permitted to sign the player they're going to select.

It took a little while to get the answer but I've finally gotten it:

No.

The provision allowing a team to sign a player before the draft applies only to the club with the top overall pick, according to the league. But it's a rule that NFL officials might study in the future and consider changing if they come to feel it's necessary.

So we'll have to wait until Saturday afternoon to see who the Rams are going to choose. The guess here is that it will be LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey. But you'd have to think that the two defensive ends, Chris Long of Virginia and Vernon Gholston of Ohio State, have to be under consideration as well.
