Shockey-to-Saints Deal Still A Possibility?

There are ongoing whispers that the New York Giants could trade tight end Jeremy Shockey before or during the NFL draft, probably to the New Orleans Saints.

The Giants made their Super Bowl run with rookie Kevin Boss filling in for an injured Shockey, and playing well. Some observers are convinced that Eli Manning improved as a quarterback down the stretch in part because Shockey was out of the lineup, and Manning didn't have to worry about how many passes he was throwing in the tight end's direction to keep him happy.

Wonderfully eloquent comment, Toria.
On what source do you have it that Shockey is not on the block(ey)?

There have been more than whispers in NY.

NYG should dump him while there's still some value. He's been an emotional team leader, but also a hothead and crybaby. Eli needs a few cooler heads in the huddle.

Really Jints Fan? Can you really judge my eloquence, then follow immediately in the next sentence with a pun, the lowest common denominator of the English language?

Good riddance. He dropped a lot of balls before getting hurt last year. He's a great blocker who plays with intensity every down -- but a better fit for another team besides the G-men.

Oy. Shockey is a diva, but a GREAT blocker -- ten times the blocker Boss is. There's no way they should get rid of the guy. Does he drop too many balls? Yup. But he's still a major talent, and it would be silly to get rid of him.

Does this guy have a source for his speculation about a Shockey trade? Every statement from the Giants organization says he's not on the trading block.

"On what source do you have it that Shockey is not on the block(ey)?"

umm..how about Jerry Reese our G.M. being a source saying that Shockey is not on the block lol..i mean you really cant get any further than that..i dont know what you people dont get...WE ARE NOT SHOPPING HIM...JR has said it a number of times..

I think trading Shockey would be a good move. The guy has never played a full season without being hurt. It's time to move on. For all nay-sayers, just remember when Barber left how everyone panicked and would worry what would happen. Things turned out pretty well. Time to trade shock jock. they need to shore up too many positions that one draft can fill. A trade for another player plus an extra draft pick would help.

A trade of Shockey makes sense monetarily as well for the Giants. Will they trade him to have more cap room to sign their draft picks or offer Strahan more money? It's all about the money here, and Shockey's making a ton of it. Is he a talent? Yes. Is he worth it even if Boss can fill in adequately? No, especially for the salary cap gain.

As a die hard Giants fan (and a Shockey fan), I've come to the conclusion that now is the time to get rid of Shockey. I don't think he will ever grow out of his "me-first" attitude. If he's worth a second round pick, I'd do it in a heart beat. The reality is he is injury prone.

Shockey is a great talent. He is not a great football player and he is not a great teammate. He kills too many drives with drops, penalties and route improvisations. Jerry Reese is doing and saying the right things now, but once he is sure Shockey can pass a physical and a trade can go through I would not be surprised to see him pull the trigger for a high 2nd round pick or better.

Giants have three tight ends on the roster Shockey, Boss, and Mathews. Boss is a good reciever while Mathews is a good blocker. Shockey is a combination of the too except he can't cath as good as Boss. Parcells always have liked Shockey and would make for a good player to have for a rebuilding team with a young QB. Trade him to where he should be and that is Miami and get the first pick in the 3rd and fifth rounds. Love Shockey and wish he could fit in with the G-Men.

I love the Shockey drug.
Evidence-be-damned brilliance like, "...it would be silly to get rid of him."
Silly Giants. Silly Champion Giants.
I'm convinced that many of his supporters are fantasy guys, for whom team results are far less important than individual style and stats, and never the twain....
And Jerry Reese is saying exactly what he would say if he really intends to keep him, and exactly what has to be said to maintain His Whininess' value if he does not.

shockey is gone to the saints ... believe it! jerry reese loves draft picks and younger players. shockey is a cap-killer. say goodbye.

Nedracine your nuts by saying he'd be a cap killer when he signed a long term deal in '05 till 2011, and With reports of no salary cap being enforced for the 2010 season I doubt that a problem, Ive got my season tickets do you?!?! Colts-Giants in '08 SB Giants 42-31
