Slip of Tongue By Dolphins' GM?
A telling slip of the tongue or a pre-draft smokescreen?
At this time of the year, it can be impossible to tell.
Miami Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland said at a news conference today that the team hopes the player it selects with the top overall choice in the draft will be "a pillar of your defense for a long time."
The Dolphins have not identified which player they're going to pick. They reportedly have been focusing on Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long but might have defensive ends Vernon Gholston of Ohio State and Chris Long of Virginia under strong consideration as well.
Ireland hesitated briefly when reporters pointed out to him what he'd said about a defensive player.
"That's a Freudian slip," he said.
He amended the statement to say the team wants the player to be a pillar of its offense or defense for a long time.
Asked about trade offers for the selection, Ireland said: "I think people are interested in the pick. Have I fielded a lot of calls? I've fielded some.... I think those calls will start coming in next week."

Since they have the first pick, what difference does it make if Ireland DID reveal who the Dolphins were thinking of taking before listening to trade offers for the pick?
