B. Albert Thought Chiefs Were Going to Take Him With Fifth Pick
If any of you saw the Post show last night on Comcast, you know that I was on and one of our in-studio guests was Branden Albert, the guard from the University of Virginia drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round last weekend to play offensive tackle.
Albert, I thought, came across as very engaging and very humble, and off camera he seemed like a very good guy. One interesting thing he said is that he believed, based on his pre-draft conversations with the Chiefs, he was going to Kansas City on the fifth overall pick of the draft. But the Chiefs changed course, he said, when LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey surprisingly remained available for the fifth choice. The Chiefs also had the 17th overall selection, courtesy of trading defensive end Jared Allen to the Minnesota Vikings, and traded up to 15th to land Albert as well. Albert said he had no hard feelings about how things unfolded, knowing how good Dorsey is.
He said he could sense the excitement within the organization and around town about the Chiefs' draft class when he went to Kansas City for a press conference following the draft. He also said he expects to be put at tackle right away, rather than beginning at guard and being eased into playing a new position.
