Deadline for Walsh to Hand Over "SpyGate" Materials Looming
Soon, we all should know what Matt Walsh knows about "SpyGate."
The deadline for the former New England Patriots video assistant to turn over to the league any materials that he possesses related to the videotaping scandal involving his former team is Thursday, under his agreement with the NFL protecting him against lawsuits.
It's unclear whether Walsh has turned over anything yet, and league officials say they will withhold comment until after Walsh's scheduled meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell next Tuesday in New York. Goodell is to participate in a news conference after that meeting.
Goodell and other league officials hope that the interview with Walsh will answer the question of whether the Patriots videotaped the St. Louis Rams' walk-through before the teams played in the Super Bowl in 2002, as reported by the Boston Herald. The Patriots have denied that allegation vehemently.

Arlen Specter's not done with this by a long shot. He doesn't trust Goodell with Walsh's tapes and neither do I.
I'm not saying this is how things went down, but let's just accept it as a plausible hypothetical: Goodell sees really incriminating stuff on the earlier tapes, knows he's punishing Belichick and the Pats severely, wants to tamp down the media furor and protect one of the league's celebrity coaches, and destroys the evidence. In that context, how can he be trusted with additional materials, materials whose contents could show his earlier comments to be disingenuous at best?
The bottom line is that the stated reason for destroying the tapes -- to prevent them from being leaked to the media -- is a sham worthy of the Bush White House and an obvious red flag to anyone with a brain. Well, I guess Arlen Specter has a brain. And he has not been assuaged AT ALL by his meetings with Goodell.
