O'Sullivan Joins Starting Quarterback Race in S.F.

The San Francisco 49ers entered the offseason with a two-man competition for the starting quarterback job between Alex Smith and Shaun Hill.

After the team's weekend minicamp, Coach Mike Nolan declared it a three-man competition that also includes J.T. O'Sullivan.

O'Sullivan is familiar with new offensive coordinator Mike Martz's system because both were in Detroit last season.

Hill had some good moments as the starter in the late stages of last season and the 49ers re-signed the University of Maryland product this offseason to compete with Smith, the former top overall selection in the NFL draft who's coming off a difficult season in which he suffered from shoulder and arm troubles and feuded with Nolan, for the starting job.
