Owners Might Vote Tuesday to Reopen Labor Deal
The league's owners might vote as soon as Tuesday, when they're scheduled to meet in Atlanta, to exercise a reopener clause in their labor agreement with the players' union, a source close to the situation said.
Either side has until Nov. 8 to exercise the reopener clause. Doing so would make the 2010 season the final season in the agreement, and the 2009 season the final one with a salary cap in effect. Union chief Gene Upshaw previously has said he expects the owners to exercise the reopener clause and consider a lockout of the players in 2011.
Several owners have expressed dissatisfaction with the labor deal, which gives the players 60 percent of league revenues under the salary cap. The two sides already have had at least one bargaining session.
