Saints Look Formidable After Shockey Trade

Watch out for the Saints.

Their trade for tight end Jeremy Shockey could make them a force again in the NFC.

Coach Sean Payton got the most out of Shockey during the tight end's rookie season, when Payton was the offensive coordinator of the Giants. Shockey could be highly motivated and highly productive in New Orleans. He gives quarterback Drew Brees another down-the-field receiving option and could create space for wideout Marques Colston.

The move could help the Saints get back to where they were two seasons ago, when they reached the NFC title game.

They still can't stop anyone on defense.

Another offensive weapon. Now with Colston, Bush, Meachem coming on like wildfire and Shockey... McCallister coming along... Pierre factor possbly... Brees and a solid line... how many corners can a Defensive coordinator put on the field and be able to stop the run? Four, five... talk about stretching the field... opening up the run! The offense will be one of the best in the NFL.

Now flash back to 2006...the defense today is better then 2006 with Ellis, Pressley, Vilma, Porter, Gay, McCray and healthy Young... the offense is also better... factor McCallister... being able o move the ball offensively, score and eat up clock... allowing the defense to rest, keeping pressure on the opposing offense to score... against a better defense... will make all the difference in the world. Pass rush should be better... thus DB's and Safeties will look better... saints organization is on the right track!

Sure... upgrade at WSLB and another DB would be nice... perhaps another quality RB in the event McCallister can't go... but this team should win the division, threaten the NFC title and dare we mention a serious contender at reaching the SuperBowl. Just like any team... injuries will play a huge part as to how far they will go... but today... they are a threat and should be taken seriously.

Let's look at the other side of this trade. The NY Giants won every post season game on the road without Shockey. So not only are they looking like the team to beat in the NFC this year, but with two extra picks on next year's draft, they will be able to add more depth. The Giants look strong or the next few years.

Shockey was a great contributor during his years with NY. All true fans will miss his enthusiasm and talent, but unfortunately his attitude tended to make people forget his accomplishments. I wish him well and look forward to watching the Saints lose the NFC Championship to the NY Giants.
