Florida Teacher Canned for "Full Monty" Performance
The High Price We Pay for Propriety
Here we go again! Another teacher fired for using his butt in an after-work art project.
Administrators at a Florida high school have placed one of their music teachers on a forced leave of absence for performing in an amateur production of "The Full Monty" -- a hit Broadway musical that features partial nudity. Jason Brenner, who has taught music and theater for the past three years at Lemon Bay High in Englewood, was sent a letter giving him a three-choice ultimatum: "stop doing the show; continue the show but take yourself out of the last scene so that you're not naked on stage, or continue doing the show at full capacity but hand in a letter of resignation." Brenner chose option three, and he is expected to turn in his resignation this week.
For the record, Brenner plays Dave Bukatinsky, "one of several out-of-work steel workers in Buffalo who strip for a night to raise money to help support their families." However, at the Venice Little Theatre production where he performs there is no frontal nudity whatsoever and only "about two seconds" of bare-bottom exposure, according to the artistic/managing director. Nonetheless, those two seconds were enough for school officials to strip him of his position because they "hold [their] teachers to a higher moral standard."
That standard will end up costing them a popular and talented educator who, despite not being paid for his performance, would rather give up teaching than compromise his art. While officials maintain that "in public schools, public nudity does not fit in," it's hard to imagine that seeing Brenner's bottom for two seconds during a play outside of school is more damaging to students than losing him permanently. Clearly schools have a zero tolerance policy for what they perceive as impropriety, but given the drought of quality teachers in America, perhaps it's time to re-evaluate what constitutes that propriety.
After all, many arts teachers are themselves artists who use the classroom as a means to support their passion. In so doing they offer students unique and practical insights into these fields. But if this wave of ill-formulated prudishness is allowed to continue sweeping across America's schools, it will wash away all but the most conservative artists and further erode our already porous educational system. It goes without saying that teachers have different responsibilities than some other professionals, but the funtamental question should be: Can we inject commonsense into the calculation of those responsibilities?

This entry is DEAD ON accurate. With the sad state of the school system, as well as changing American ideals, it is time to update what the schools feel is right and wrong. Seeing any part of the human body is not going to do damage to ANYONE.

wrong wrong wrong! teachers are completely different from average jobs. If we start lowering standards for our schools then soon abuse will creep back in. The schools #1 priority is to protect our kids first then educate them second. It is irresponisble to give up the first to possibly achieve the second.

Yeah, because any high school kid would have a real hard time finding a DVD of The Full Monty if they wanted to. I bet most HS kids have seen the movie already anyway. Protect their fragile minds!

Boo whoo whoo! The poor children. Its just a bunch of repressed old closet cases that really care. Kids are doing a lot worse than seeing bare butts on stage, believe me.

Nice sympathy Karl. Glad you dont teach my kids.
Too often education is taken out of the parents hands. I'd like to see more of us step up and teach our kids right from wrong rather than waiting for the schools to try.

I agree with JW. This is a bit too far. High school kids? Come on, it's not like they are elementary school students.

His part-time job has NOTHING to do with his school work, no one would know if they didn't bring it up in the first place..
It really doesn't matter what age the students are, we all are born with a bottom... COME ON NOW!
Posted by: Trevor Wright | March 13, 2007 10:58 PM
Like hell age doesn't matter! If this guy was a professor in college no one would care. Kids under 18 makes all the difference in the world, just ask R Kelly. Until that magic number rolls round there are no freedoms just rules.

I can understand Carol's concerns but being a Theatre teacher myself I would have to say that I would do the same thing he did. It is not like he has required his students to come see the show, and If he did from my experiences with the show the final scene involved back lighting, which means they audience is seeing no more than the actors' silhouette. MEANING its dark and you can not make out a clear picture of their behinds anyway. The parents of his students should be fighting for him to retain his job. The ideals that he is standing for are exactly what I would want my children to learn. Don't sacrifice your beliefs for what you do or who you are because of some moral prejudice.

It's about time a man got fired for acting inappropriate, ninety percent of the time it's women taking the hit. Let us make men have to live to the same standards that women do, if women cant do it then men cant.
Posted by: youbettcha | March 14, 2007 10:19 AM
Wouldn't it be better if none of us had to live up to those hypocritical standards?
Posted by: | March 14, 2007 10:21 AM
It seems like our schools are more interested repression than education. This is worse than the sex education story from above. Who would expect that performing in a play could cost you your job. I commend this teacher for sticking by his moral and having the artistic integrity to walk away from his paycheck. I hope all his student see the play so they realize how ridiculous the school is being. Don't forget, the more you repress the more deviant you become and if you don't believe me check out the Church.
Posted by: Erica Cooper | March 14, 2007 11:28 AM
Youbettcha, that's probably the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. How is this guy acting inappropriately? He's ACTING in a show. I don't know if you've seen the musical or not, but there is very little to nothing shown until the very end, and the article said that they don't even go completely nude like they did on Broadway.
I agree with whoever said this has nothing to do with his school life. And it's not like he's actually working a 2nd job as a stripper or something. And don't kids like...dissect dead animals in high school, and learn all about the human body in 5th grade? You're telling me they shouldn't know that their teacher shows his ass for 2 seconds in a show unrelated to the school?
Posted by: ridiculous | March 14, 2007 11:36 AM
I think it is an issue of students losing respect for him and being distracted by the issue of his butt instead of focused on their studies.

I smell a law suit coming on, and something tells me the Board of Ed. is going to be pinching some more pennies when it's all over.

As a theatre teacher, I think this is stupid. This guy is performing outside of school on his own time. Nobody was forced to come see it. It's not hurting any student's education or morals. People need to mind their own business and leave people to have their own lives. Let's concentrate on events that hurt children rather than some parent being mad about nothing.
Posted by: Kelly | March 14, 2007 11:53 AM
I would rather have my kids learning from teachers who don't moonlight by mooning large audiences thank you!
Posted by: | March 14, 2007 12:01 PM
I doubt that this teacher turned to his seventh priod chorus class the other day and said, "Wanna see the undress rehearsal for my big finale tonight?"
In order for these impressionable darlings to see the show, mom or dad would have had to drive them to the theatre and buy them a ticket. How about we start parenting and figger out what the kids are doing and leave the nice teacher alone. Sheesh.

...and next thing you know, it will be acceptable for schools to fire teachers because they are divorced or use a swear word within 100 feat of the school or are seen buying a bottle of wine at the supermarket. Where does the line exist? It's one thing if the students were forced to watch the show or the show took place on school property, but this was entirely on the teacher's free time and not likely that many students at the school would see it. (C'mon, what high school student goes to community theatre who doesn't have an expressed interest in the subject? And for those who do, I don't see how they would find scandal in the teacher's performance!)
And as for the students? What do you think they are going to remember ten years from now? What is going to influence their outlook on our society? The fact that their teacher did a partial nude scene (which they likely didn't see)in a community theatre production of an award-winning musical. Or the fact that a teacher got fired because of that?
Posted by: Kate | March 14, 2007 1:39 PM
What a great lesson they're teaching these kids. Express yourself artistically in an award-winning show that has such a great story and message, but which includes baring your ass for about two seconds, on your OWN personal time, and, regardless of how great a teacher you are, you'll be fired. The people who should be fired are the nitwits that made the decision to fire him!
Posted by: jackson | March 14, 2007 4:13 PM
Like a previous poster said - no one is forcing the kids to go the musical. The nudity is not gratuitous is any way. It's instrumental in forwarding the plot. It's not like he's an actual Chippendale's stripper. Come on now, people. Loosen up now. Let it go.

I went to Lemon Bay High School. I graduated in 1997. What a joke this is. Down in Englewood people have a lot worse things to worry about like teen age pregnancy and drugs. I makes me asick to thin kI graduated at this school.
Posted by: G | March 14, 2007 10:11 PM
FOOZY that was a ridiculous comment. Where does it say that the teacher is making porno and raping young girls like R Kelley? Where do you get off even comparing the two.
He's doing a show, in his private life. Even the title says THE FULL MONTY. The school board chose to go see it, they could have easily not attended. They knew what was going to happen. They are the ones who are being ridiculous. Soon they will realize what they did was wrong.
Just wait for the backlash from the kids when they find out their favorite teacher was fired for performing in a show.
God forbid he do what makes him happy. Because you know...in America we have NO freedom.

I'm from Massachusetts but I think this is pure bullcrap.

ABSURD! Moral standards?! There is a difference between art and pornography.
Parents, what are you so concerned about? Do you realize how many of your "innocent" kids hitting up drugs in the school locker rooms and having promiscuous sex? Seeing a production of THE FULL MONTY should be the least of your concerns.

it's sad that at this day and age..people are still creating controversy over something so ridiculously trivial. for anyone who's SEEN the actual show, the actor strips at the last second with light trickery (technically, you don;t even see anything). It's a fun, musical comedy for crying out loud! and to have this teacher fired for something he is doing on his own time, outside of school. there are better things to pay attention to. That's FLORIDA for you. most those kids wouldn;t care less, half of them are screwing their uncles and the other half are high on crystal meth and shooting guns because that's all there is to do there...oh yeah, and sniffing household appliances. It's a sad sad world, that people would be upset at this, when there clearly are other problems to handle. also..nudity has beena round since.,,uh,....oh yeah, the begining of time. why is the US so freakish about it? prudes, gotta love them. and kick them to the curb.
Posted by: alp | March 15, 2007 4:09 PM
anyone on here who says that the school firing this poor guy is 'protecting their kids' is completely idiotic. your children see will ferrell's ass almost every week, and it's not like these kids were clamoring to get into the theatre.
get this, your children watch cable. they have seen a man's ass before.

If any of the school officials had every really seen the Full Monty, they would discover that its a tendor story about relationships between husbands and wives and about a depressed town in small town USA, not any different from what's happening today with the job market. Dave's character also hits upon the selfesteem of an overweight man, and how he and his wife work it out. If the school officials actually visit the theatre and experienced the Full Monty, it would change their minds. I never understand how anyone can make such a fuss without really getting all the facts or without trying to finding the positive message behind the action.

I'm appalld not only at what happened but at those who actually SUPPORT thie firing!
He is a THEATRE teacher, for God's sake...not that it would be justified in firing him if he were a math teacher, but he got fired for practicing the very craft he teaches! I think his performing in the show is a wonderful example to the kids that teachers are "human", too, not to mention keeping him current on the craft of theatre!
And please note that The Full Monty is usually performed, even in community theatre, with the acotrs getting ALL THE WAY naked at the end; this was a watered-dwon (and technically not true to the title) performance in the first place. Those busybodies who have nothing better to do than to protest this need to GET A LIFE. He wasn't pole-danging at Hooters (or an imaginary male equivalent thereof), he was performing on stage, playing a demanding role that is 99% acting, singing, and dancing (gosh, I would think parents would want their kids' teachers to practice what they teach) and 1% stripping.
And as the rest have said, the kids almost certainly didn't even see the show! It would so, so, SO be NOT A BIG DEAL if the busybodies hadn't made such a ridiculous stink about it (just like nobody wants to read a book until it's been banned).
At least I imagine that other schools will be snapping up this teacher for standing up for what he believes in. I thought this was the 21st century and we lived in a FREE country; apprently we're in Nazi Germany where the Thought Police can tell you what to do on your own time.
And people wonder why talented people aren't entering the teaching field anymore!! The most ironic thing is that theatre is ALL ABOUT taking risks and moving out of your comfort zone! The very things this teacher was being fired for! If I were a principal, I'd be fighting like crazy to hire him at my school. In the meantime, busybodies keep watering down the world to make it a dull Stepford-ville while the kids shoot up drugs behind their parents' back, because the parents are more concerned about some teacher's gluteus maximus than they are about teaching kids about the real world.
So sad...

A music teacher gets fired for performing Full Monty outside of school. Funny, I thought it was academy award/Tony winner, not exactly pornography. How can they make him leave? Sickening situation. Another example of what happens when conservatives are allowed to run the country.
