Attack of the Terrible Excuse
Mesa Air CFO Digs His Hole Deeper
Excuses: Where would we be without them? From "It's my first day" to "I learned it by watching you, dad!" they can get us out of the most difficult of situations. But sometimes even the best intentioned reasoning can go terribly wrong. Take the case this summer of Florida state Rep. Bob Allen, who claimed he attempted to solicit gay sex from an undercover officer in a public restroom because he was afraid of black people. It almost makes Sen. Larry Craig's wide-stance explanation seem reasonable.
Well, the latest candidate to challenge for the "worst excuse ever" title is Peter Murnane, chief financial officer of Mesa Air. The Phoenix-based regional carrier has been accused by Hawaiian Air of using confidential information it obtained during a possible takeover bid to launch inter-island carrier go! airlines. Hawaiian further alleges that Murnane deleted documents as well as a business plan to cover-up what Mesa had done -- and here's where the excuse comes in.
During an evidentiary hearing last week in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Honolulu, Mesa attorney Max Blecher explained that the deletion was unintentional and happened as a result of Murnane purging his hard drive of pornography. So the CFO wasn't covering up misdeeds; he was merely covering up his interest in porn, which was so intense that he used three separate computers to well, satisfy it. And you thought the company might be in trouble!
Unfortunately for Mesa, however, Judge Robert Faris didn't buy the whole collateral porn damage excuse, ruling "that the company should be held responsible at least in part for their CFO's actions." The full trial starts Tuesday. And while Murnane may have lost in court and has been placed on administrative leave, perhaps he can take consolation in the fact that his nomination for OFF/beat's Idiot of the Year is looking pretty solid.

Brilliant! I hope he wins

Murnane was only doing what he was told. He was simply following orders from his Furher Jonathan Ornstein. Cut Murnane some slack.

For being a major newspaper I feel that the "Idiot of the Year" award should go to the idiot who wrote the caption "Idoit of the Year" in your paper.

As an ex-employee of Mesa Air Group, I know that if I had used a company computer to "take matters into my own hands", I would have been fired instantly.
I guess that the anti-porn policy of Mesa Air Group only applies to the lower level employees. Those in the crystal palace who want to "get in touch with their outer child" get a free pass.
Sad to see that a once high flying company is going through its death throes as a result of a corrupt and inept (not to mention "horny" management team headed by Jonathan Ornstein.

Same ole stuff huh Orenstein? Lying and cheating is still your game. Too bad people don't know the real reason you let Bob Tripi go. Well you deserve what you're gonna get. What goes around comes around. If you want to contact me here's my address. eafa757@yahoo.com. Then you can flap your jaw about how you have been right about everything. And every statement made by somebody else that has a beef with you is "totally preposterous". You need a new choice of words bro.

What's up JO you aren't saying much.Hey, how much did you settle for with Bob Tripi? It must have been alot because he has a new house, car, motorcycle, his own business. Sheww! Must have been alot. To bad the judge found you at fault for wrongfull termination. The Teamsters really took you to town on that one. But that's nothing compared to what you are gonna pay after this is over. Huh? Come on, speak up. Why are you not talking to anyone out there.

go!-ing down! It never fails to become crystal clear how the mesa "upper crust" truly are the bottom feeders in the airline industry. Around every corner is revealed the depraved character of JO and his cronies; from the Freedom scab debacle (and ALPA took them back w/ open arms WTF) , the worst pilot contract in the history of the world, to this and so much more. They are getting only a fraction of what they so richly deserve.

Mr. Ornstein,
Again you got caught with your hand in the cookie jar. I guess past performance indicated future intentions. Like when you churned peoples accounts and lost your brokers license and had to pay a hefty fine. Instead of managing their accounts in a responsible manner. Like when you fired Tripi for "job abadonment" but had to pay him a 6 figure settlement for wrongful termination. Because you were afraid to have the ramp unionize.
And now, you knew you couldn't compete with Hawaiian or Aloha fairly so you did what you always do.... look for a way to cheat. But again you got caught.
It warms my heart to see you squirm.

Can any of you ex rampers remember back in the day when time and a half was only awarded after 80 hrs. Not after 8, not 40 but 80. If Johnathan wasn't challenged by Jackie Moore,he would still be cheating the employees.

Mr. Ornstein,
Sorry about the negative comments. I have had people say negative things said to me!

go! to hell OJ!

I joined Mesa 5-26-98. At that time, time and a half was awarded after working 80 hrs. A few employees have contacted me about possibly getting back pay for all the hours they had done over 80 hrs. Seems unfair that JO should get away with it. It might be possible that if enough of us got together from around that date, we could try to get compensated for all those hrs worked over 80 hrs. God knows the way we got paid at Mesa, we had to work over 80 just to make ends meet. I'm just wondering if all those hrs logged were "accidently deleted along with all that porn". Who knows. It might be worth a shot. Anybody interested? Contact me at eafa757@yahoo.com

I know all about those 80 hour work weeks, during my two-year stay at YV. Longest 5 years of my life!

JO is someone who has a past track record of dishonest dealings with all those he meets.
Jail time for JO would be most appropriate IMHO
Posted by: exfaa | October 9, 2007 1:57 PM
Haven't heard from you yet JO. What's up? I left my email address for you and I've received nothing from you. Is it possible that those nice clothes you and your henchmen wear is to cover up the s__t that you really stink of. F_ _ K in THIEF! Love how you still treat your employees. I keep in touch with a few. Gomes says you're a real c_ck smack. That you want the high turnover rate and employees that are above 8 or 9 bucks an hour out of there so you can bring in fresh 7.50 an hour employees. How about those cars you always raffled off for perfect attendance. Funny how the pilots always won the car. Still throwing those cheap BBQ's? Ya know, the BAR S hot dogs and the government cheese for your brand X burgers? Keep it up. I know the morale around the ramp and gate is really high.

Seems like eafa757 needs to move on. You either quite or got fired, good for you. Help your friends leave, don't fly on Mesa; hell, boycott his dumpy club. Spending time on the internet calling JO out is ridiculous. It's never going to happen.
Posted by: | October 13, 2007 5:58 PM
I have moved on. And folks there is life after Mesa. You just have to go out and look for it. They are trapped because they have gone as far as they can go in pay and they don't want to give up their " free flying ". If you have noticed lately it's hard to get anywhere on US. Pilots and F/A's can no longer commute to work. Getting Jr'd when you walk off the plane only to run into CREW SCHEDULING and having them say "sorry, you are juniored". Or having it printed out on the release that both pilots have to sign. Ya know, at the bottom where it says "by the way you are juniored". I think the person that wrote I need to move on needs to move on before your loser company goes under. JO is gonna bail out on the company in a golden parachute and leave you behind to try to rebuild the bad name he has already made for Mesa Air. Too bad you still work there. At least I put my name on what I write. You never will. You'll be with the company when the boat sinks and JO will be in a dingy watching you go down with the ship.

It is shocking that the honesty of Mr. Murnane would be questioned. It is well known that most chief financial officers need at least two computers to keep their collections of pornographic pictures. One should not question Mr. Murnane's need for three. He was clearly enthusiastic in pursuing his hobby.
Who among us might not be confused when deleting documents on three different computers? When done in haste, it can be devilishly hard to tell a Word document from an Excel spreadsheet or a video file.
It might be fair to criticize this CFO for carelessness, but certainly not for dissembling.
