Australian Politician Promotes Hope & Clean Underwear

Sen. Nigel Scullion Cuffed in the Buff at Russian Strip Club

"If you ever get an offer to go drinking with Icelandic whalers and Canadian crab fishermen, take them up on it." This nugget of pub wisdom was handed down Wednesday by Australian Sen. Nigel Scullion.

According to Australian radio, in 1998 Scullion, now the deputy leader of the National Party coalition, was spotted wearing only his underpants and "handcuffed to a pole in a sleazy Russian nightclub." According to The Daily Telegraph, Scullion, who was not then a senator, managed to extricate himself from the pole just in the nick of time and ran half naked into the St. Petersburg night.

After being caught with his pants down, Scullion was neither evasive nor apologetic, but instead proudly went on Australian national radio Wednesday and called it "a terrific night." When asked if he had learned anything from the experience, Scullion added, "Always wear clean underwear." Pointing out that the drunken escapade happened nearly 10 years ago, Scullion expressed no regret.

Indeed, some might even call his a reassuring message of honesty and hope. It's rare for a politician to be honest about a so-called "youthful indiscretion." And his message offers hope for every keg-standing American who gave up his political aspirations after the advent of YouTube. Run for office in Australia, it seems to say, and find the constituents who like you for who you really are.

Question over the limits are significant here. The tone seems to be that such behavior is ok but that is relative. Every country is different. Australian founded by criminals and so not shy of debauchery. America founded by puritans as is reflected in the electorate and politicians.
