The 2007 Idiot of the Year Awards
And The Winner Is...
Well, after another fantastic year of OFF/beat idiocy, I'd like to thank the thousands of you who cast your votes and the 10 nominees for pushing the boundaries of common sense. After vastly higher than expected vote totals, one candidate emerged on top: Matt Wilkinson.
But I am suspicious of these results -- especially since the totals kept changing even after the polls were closed at 1:45 p.m. today -- so I am declaring the winner: former Judge Roy Pearson, who held the lead overnight before voting irregularities became apparent. (Don't worry, I'm calling Katherine Harris to investigate.) Without further ado, then:
2007 Idiot of the Year: Former Judge Roy L. Pearson of Washington. This former administrative court judge exemplifies everything that the award stands for. Demonstrating worse judgment than a 15-year-old at Mardis Gras, he sued his neighborhood dry cleaner for $54 million over a pair of lost pants. His streak continued when he turned down settlement offers for as much as $12,000 (the pants were worth $395, according to Pearson's expert witness). Pearson spent two years and squandered his admittedly limited funds building up a case against two hard-working Korean immigrants. Stubbornly persisting against logic, reason and common decency, he pursued his lawsuit to the D.C. Superior Court, where he broke down in tears while describing how much those trousers had meant to him. Despite public ridicule and international disdain, Pearson never yielded, fighting for reasons no one quite understood and in the process losing everything. Congratulations, Mr. Pearson.
Silver Medal: Matt Wilkinson of Portland, Ore. Wilkinson's case was made in September, when he tried to impress his girlfriend by putting a 20-inch rattlesnake into his mouth after downing a six-pack of beer. While neither she nor the doctors who treated his tongue were impressed, our judges certainly were. Fine work, Mr. Wilkinson.
Bronze Medal: Ewa Sowinska of Poland. The country's "watchdog" over kiddie affairs, she kept the spirit of Jerry Falwell alive by launching an investigation into whether Tinky Winky, the purse-carrying Teletubby, might be a harbinger of a homosexual lifestyle. After a few days of international ridicule she was forced to scuttle the plan, but her bronze medal will forever be a testament to this shining moment in Polish history.
Individual Awards
The 2007 Kwaltz Award for "Bumbling Bureaucracy" goes to the state of Illinois for issuing a firearm owner's ID card to a 10-month-old. According to the card, Bubba Ludwig is two-feet-three-inches tall and weighs 20 pounds. Although he cannot yet purchase weapons, because he has a card, his family doesn't need to keep its guns in a secure location.
Silver Medal: The Westchester County (N.Y.) Library for requiring a grieving daughter to fork over a lousy 50 cents on her dead mother's overdue book. Elizabeth Schaper said she was "stunned" when the clerk insisted she pay up. "I told him that maybe he didn't hear me right, that my mother had just died, otherwise I'm sure that she would have returned it on time. "His only reply was, 'That will be 50 cents.'"
Bronze Medal: Dane County (Wisc.) prosecutor Paul Humphrey, who according to a Wisconsin State Journal investigation kept 18-year-old Kenneth Bell in county jail for a month "even though he was sent notification at least four times that the wrong person was being held."
The I Didn't Do It Award for Worst Excuse of 2007 was extremely competitive. After difficult deliberations, I have decided to award this year's top prize to Florida State Rep. Bob Allen for his bizarre excuse for soliciting gay sex in a public restroom. The Republican told police that it was his fear of being surrounded by black people that prompted him hand over $20 to perform oral sex on an undercover officer. After being found guilty of solicitation, Allen tendered his resignation in November.
So that's it for 2007 Idiot of the Year Awards. Thanks to everyone for your help and participation. Let's hope 2008 is as idiotic as this year!

Mr. Pearson:
Congrats, you're #1!

Pearson is more deserving than either Bush or Mallory. Heres a judge who abuses his power hurts the public and is too stupid to stop even when it costs him his job. Talk about an abuse of affirmative action. Makes it harder for everyone else. Pearson ought to crawl in a hole and never come out.

The Bronze medal for Ms Sowinska is way too little.
I demand she deserves Gold Medal, with a special blue ribbon.
Oh, thank you, Sowinska, thank you! Thanks to you, your party lost the last election, so we don't have to see Mr Kaczynski's face anymore.
Posted by: Grumpy Pollack | December 24, 2007 3:11 AM
Don't be daft Grumpy Pollack. She is protecting Polish babies from the worst TV show ever created. Fancy getting in trouble for doing you job!
Here's some proof about it:
On the 24th of December, 1997 CNN reported that Tinky Winky was gay.
"The Teletubbies also have a following among the gay community. Tinky Winky, who carts around a red handbag but speaks with a male voice, has become something of a gay icon." CNN, 12/24/97
On April 17, 1998, the Village Voice praised the Teletubbies series for their gay Tinky Winky character.
On January 1, 1999, in its New Year's IN/OUT list, The Washington Post anointed "Tinky Winky, the gay Teletubby," as next year's Ellen DeGeneres.
In 1997, when the BBC, which produces the show, wanted to fire the human who plays Tinky for dancing in the streets wearing only a balloon, gay groups protested. It has also been reported that some gay groups have "claimed Tinky Winky as their own". (Washington Post, February 11, 1999, Page C01)

As Roy L. Pearson showed, it takes a special kind of arrogance to make a mockery of himself, his job, the entire American legal system, and destroy the American dream of an immigrant couple just trying to make an honest living. All for a pair of pants. Congratulations, Mr. Pearson! Wear your 2007 Idiot of the Year award with pride!
Wishing a Happy New Year to the Chungs. I hope your 2008 is free of Roy Pearson!

You know....ray is right...'liberal dems' are jealous. Jealous that a complete idiot of a puppet won the presidency TWICE because sheeple like him fell for the complete lunacy that is the GOP/neo-con agenda. Jealous that he was able to ruin the country's name with the world, as well as create chaos and insanity in a country that had NOTHING to do with any of the reasons that imbecile or his handlers gave in his many speeches for 9/11. Jealous that their pandering to the religious community created a situation where faith is subverted for political gain.
Oh yea......really really jealous...

I guess this article was supposed to be humorous, right? However, it wasn't because Emil Steiner couldn't help but show the usual bitterness of the media by including the usual suspects as the ultimate idiots....a reference to Jerry Falwell (he is dead so you find a proxy) and of course, a Republican. I am sure there are better honorees. A completely unbiased list might have actually been humorous.
Posted by: Applpie | January 1, 2008 5:40 AM
Liberals this, Republicans that...you're all retards! It's the old "divide and conquer" trick, and the powers that be are using it to take away all of our freedoms, little by little so it's easily accepted. Both parties are bought for and sold by large industrial interests, and our dumbed-down populace gets its propaganda ("news") from a media that has relinquished its original purpose: to inform the citizenry of...of....oh, we're all "consumers" now...nevermind!

But,then I remembered that it's defeatocrats we're talking about and so that makes it all right,I guess.
All the talk of his lack of IQ,yet he holds an MBA from one the most prestigous liberal universities in the East, which if he were a defeatocrat would make him one of the brightest around,at least to liberals, and yet he continually out-thinks and out-maneuvers every thing you defeatocrats throw at him.
Yeah,he's an idiot,all right.
And Pearson should have been a unanimous choice.

Yankee Bob has written some obvious truth. I am continually amazed by the citizenry who play the game of politics. I have always voted, but I have often wondered why I have done so. The candidates for national office, from the two major parties, must sacrifice their integrity long before they become a serious contender. Neither Democrat nor Republican leadership will support a person of integrity who will not prostitute themselves in order to be elected. A person who will not be bought will not be elected. The populace will not vote for them.
Our citizens require our government to steal from those who produce in order to give to those who do not. Our citizens require handouts. The top 20% of the income earners in this country pay 80% of the income taxes collected. The common thieves of our populace want our government to steal more. If you will promise to give them part of the booty, they will vote for you. Only 1/3 of the National budget is from income taxes. If the Federal government only did what our Constitution gives them authority to do, their would be no need for income taxes and you would not have to pay 40-50% of your income to taxes. Of course, if you only receive the stolen goods and do not earn yourself, you don't pay income taxes anyway, but other taxes still rob you of income. Why not elect someone who believes in the constitution. If you haven't already, please read the platform of the Constitutional Party. Can they win? They cannot, if you continue to vote for the corrupt major parties. If we continue to do the same thing, we will get the same results. Change is not obtained by simply switching allegiance from one corrupt party over to the other corrupt party. In the long run, both accomplish the same thing. I am unwilling to continue to contribute to the same corruption found in both major parties. I will no longer vote for the lesser of two evils. I will vote for what I actually believe in. You might say, "but you can't win". That may be so, but I can maintain my integrity and that means more to me than winning!
Only the wise will act wise. The rest are doomed to making the same mistakes over and over again.

I think I'll go buy a large SUV next week.... I'm feeling better about 2008 all ready.... Thanks Al Gore and Tipper too.....
P.S. I guess Al Gore is IDIOT #1, wait a minute, that can't be, he just won the "No Bell" pizza prize didn't he????? Or something like that....
Posted by: Jughead | January 2, 2008 12:06 AM
Al Gore gets my vote..... he has to be an Idiot.... when confronted with the truth he seems to ignore it.... but now that I think of it, that could be any Democrat.... Over 500 scientists published studies countering global warming fears...A new analysis of peer-reviewed literature reveals that more than 500 scientists have published evidence refuting at least one element of current man-made global warming scares. More than 300 of the scientists found evidence that 1) a natural moderate 1,500-year climate cycle has produced more than a dozen global warmings similar to ours since the last Ice Age and/or that 2) our Modern Warming is linked strongly to variations in the sun's irradiance. "This data and the list of scientists make a mockery of recent claims that a scientific consensus blames humans as the primary cause of global temperature increases since 1850," said Hudson Institute Senior Fellow Dennis Avery.
Other researchers found evidence that 3) sea levels are failing to rise importantly; 4) that our storms and droughts are becoming fewer and milder with this warming as they did during previous global warmings; 5) that human deaths will be reduced with warming because cold kills twice as many people as heat; and 6) that corals, trees, birds, mammals, and butterflies are adapting well to the routine reality of changing climate caused by the sun.

About Bronze Medal: Ewa Sowinska
If you could read AND understand, you would realize, that Sowinska never launched any investigation about Teletubbies. She was provoked by a journalist, who told her HE heard, that Tinky Winky was gay. He suggested that it should be investigated and Sowinska replied that she never heard of that problem but her people will check if ther is anything to concern.
If you could only understand what you read.
Greetings from Poland.

Notice how Government as the source of most idiotic stories! Everyone talks about how BAD government is. YET they look towards government for solutions?! WHY?! Name ONE problem that the government has solved in the past 25 years where the solution was not freedom and simply STEPPING OUT of the way and allow citizens and the private sector solve it. (As a sideNote: My company can SOLVE 20% of greenhouse gases right now and the government is IN THE WAY of it gaining acceptance. Ridiculous!!)

MOSCOW. (Oleg Sorokhtin for RIA Novosti) - Stock up on fur coats and felt boots! This is my paradoxical advice to the warm world.
Earth is now at the peak of one of its passing warm spells. It started in the 17th century when there was no industrial influence on the climate to speak of and no such thing as the hothouse effect. The current warming is evidently a natural process and utterly independent of hothouse gases.
The real reasons for climate changes are uneven solar radiation, terrestrial precession (that is, axis gyration), instability of oceanic currents, regular salinity fluctuations of the Arctic Ocean surface waters, etc. There is another, principal reason--solar activity and luminosity. The greater they are the warmer is our climate.
Astrophysics knows two solar activity cycles, of 11 and 200 years. Both are caused by changes in the radius and area of the irradiating solar surface. The latest data, obtained by Habibullah Abdusamatov, head of the Pulkovo Observatory space research laboratory, say that Earth has passed the peak of its warmer period, and a fairly cold spell will set in quite soon, by 2012. Real cold will come when solar activity reaches its minimum, by 2041, and will last for 50-60 years or even longer.
This is my point, which environmentalists hotly dispute as they cling to the hothouse theory. As we know, hothouse gases, in particular, nitrogen peroxide, warm up the atmosphere by keeping heat close to the ground. Advanced in the late 19th century by Svante A. Arrhenius, a Swedish physical chemist and Nobel Prize winner, this theory is taken for granted to this day and has not undergone any serious check.

I was about to give the same explanation Homarski provided. I'd say that the bronze medal in "Idiot of the year" category now goes to mr. Emil Steiner. That's because you have based your choice on a myth created by a journalist like yourself, mr. Steiner.
The purpose of press is to provide information, but what we get is myths. Based on these myths opinions arise. Based on these opinions, decisions are made. I'm talking about elections here. IMHO recent elections in Poland show us that power of myths created by press can affect the fate of a country.
Freedom of press and freedom of speech are greatest blessings and greatest curses of democracy.
Even ancient greek writer, Aristophane, showed us, that democracy suffers from the flaws of human nature.
A final thought for all journalists:
There's nothing wrong with being naive or being an idiot, but there's something terribly wrong with deceiving millions of naive readers and finding professional or personal satisfaction in it.
Who are you today, journalists?

'Gay Tinky Winky bad for children'
The innocent world of the Teletubbies is under attack from America's religious right.
The Reverend Jerry Falwell, a former spokesman for America's Moral Majority, has denounced the BBC TV children's show. He says it does not provide a good role model for children because Tinky Winky is gay.

I've got it, you could campaign against the flourescent light bulbs that are full of Mercury and poluting the land.... thats it... go get 'em Al....

Most of us, Polish Christians, believe Ms Sowinska is right.
Wierzymy ,ze Bog stworzyl pierwsza pare ludzka.
We believe God created the very first pair of human beings.
Stworzyl Adama i Ewe.
The Most High created Adam and Eve.
Jako kobiete i mezczyzne stworzyl ich zeby byli plodni i sie rozmnazali.
Man and Female He created them to be fruitful and become many.
Zeby ze soba wspolzyli sexualnie.
To have sexual intercourses.
Sex pomiedzy kobieta i mezczyzna jest zgodny z natura.
Sex between man and female is consistent with the nature.
Bog nie stworzyl Adama i Stevena zeby mieli ze soba sex.nie stworzyl dwoch mezczyzn jako pare ale kobiete i mezczyzne.
He did not created Adam and Steven to have sex with each other!First pair of human beings werent 2 men ! but man and female.
Sex analny pomiedzy dwoma mezczyznami jest wbrew naturze czlowieka. Jest z nia niezgodny, sprzeczny.
Anal sex between 2 men is contrary to nature. It's variance with the nature. It is in opposition to the nature.
Biblia Gdanska
Please check urself what Great Lord says in His Holy Book, Leviticus 20, 13." And a man lies down with a male the same as one with a woman , both of them have done a detestable thing. They should be put to death without fail.Their own blood is upon them."

Dear True Christians,
Inasmuch as you have an inalienable right to believe in anything you want and to abide by those beliefs, you may not impose them on those who have alternate views and opinions.
In a country like Poland where 90+% of the population is Catholic, government officials should be that much more sensitive to the views of minorities, otherwise risk being seen as religious bolsheviks and zealots.

Hey 'Moderate view'..... have you ever heard of "Anarchy", which is the rejection of all forms of coercive control and authority, no common purpose or standard...
It has been the downfall of most forms of government and society...
So suck it up and get a life...

Apart of Teletubbies being the worst TV program for children I've ever seen (my private opinion), Ms. Sowinska's examination of T-W and his possible gay connexion is only a tip of of an iceberg of stupidity, ill will and narrow horizons of the former Polish Govt of Mr JK. She deserves her prize as a representative of much broader community of Polish political class - hypocrites, liars and plain fools. And how does it look like in America?

It looks real Polish over here in America....

Br-r-r! Where did global warming go?.... a funny thing happened on the way to the planetary hot flash: Much of the planet grew bitterly cold.... 44.5 inches of snow fell in New Hampshire last month, breaking the previous record of 43 inches, set in 1876. And the Canadian government is forecasting the coldest winter in 15 years.... Yet so relentlessly has the alarmist scenario been hyped, and so disdainfully have dissenting views been dismissed, that millions of people assume Gore must be right when he insists: "The debate in the scientific community is over."... But it isn't. Just last month, more than 100 scientists signed a strongly worded open letter pointing out that climate change is a well-known natural phenomenon, and that adapting to it is far more sensible than attempting to prevent it. Because slashing carbon dioxide emissions means retarding economic development, they warned, "the current US approach of CO{-2} reduction is likely to increase human suffering from future climate change rather than to decrease it."

Thanks for mentioning Ewa Sowińska. We laughed loud but well... hopefully no more such idiots in our government.
To be precise: in Poland there is maybe 90% of population baptized but in fact catholics are not as strong anymore. The problem is: people are too lazy to go and sign out or just don't know that they can do it...
And yep! Poland is country when everything different is dangerous :) (Not long ago one of our bishops said that in vitro fertilization is just other form of abortion :))
Greetings from Poland! Happy New Year :)

3rd place:
She belongs to the fanatic party called "Law and justice" (what has nothing to do with real law and justice). II WW hasn't finished for them yet, and they are still fighting with the communism. I thank God that after 2 years they don't rule anymore in Poland.

Hi and greetings from Poland. I believe you all had just a taste of what's going on on polish forums.
I hope this would help you realize how much damage did the media do to youth in Poland during last 2 years. People started shouting all over the internet that our previous government were nationalists, religious fanatics, and Catholic Church is actually a sect that teaches people to hate each other. All myths.
I check information provided by media whenever possible. It's really sad how many intended lies are produced by press, just to get another scandal to first page. And making people embarassed or mad at their own gevernment is one of the best ways to success. Sowinska's case is just one of examples of such myths.
And result? People start to believe that we have idiots in government (see some of comments above) and spread such opinions over internet. Sometimes I wonder if they're getting paid for it by political parties or maybe a sect that wants to "prepare ground" for itself in Poland. Or maybe they're simply people with little life experience and get easily manipulated. I'm sure it's more less the same in every democratic country and just the scale is different.

Does anybody in editorial staff of WAPO had actually read the original interview of Ms. Sawicka in "Wprost" weekly? It is so hard to find a person who knows Polish?

For Ken. O. (see above) and other Bush apologists: Gee, yes Dubya does have an MBA but he was a "C" student (you know, the ones who don't get hired by businesses) and obviously did'nt attend his Freshman English class (just listen to him speak without a script). It would be easy to write me off easily if my dislike of this clown was based on political considerations, but it is based, instead, on his inability to grasp even the simplest concepts with any sort of mental dexterity (he said import tariffs were important because "most of out imports come from other countries". His lack of clarity on even the most simple, never mind complex, concepts is enough to prove his lack of competence as a political leader. On an even more serious level, anyone who voted to put this miscreant (look it up: it's between miscount and miscue) in his current position has blood on their hands and one hell of a lot of karmic retribution on their dance card.

There were more irregularities than that. I voted early when maybe 125 votes were cast. Most candidates had 1-6 votes, but the judge had 107. I find it difficult to believe that 107 out of the first 125 voters all picked the same candidate out of such a comparable pack of morons. Someone took it to heart when he heard the phrase vote early, vote often.
Shenanigans, I say!
