Australian Suicide Robot Raises Questions
Science Fiction and Ethics Clash
Was it a violation of Isaac Asimov's first law of robotics, an act of human dignity, or a technological abomination?
An elderly Australian man was reportedly so miffed about the possibility of being committed to a nursing home that he decided to end his own life. But rather than use traditional methods, the 81-year-old spent his last hours researching online, and then building, a complex murder robot. With the help of a .22 caliber handgun and remote control, he ordered the machine to end his life, which it did Tuesday morning.
Clearly sound of mind, the Gold Coast resident wrote notes detailing his decision, his choice to do it in his driveway(there were contractors nearby who would find him quickly), and the difficulty he was having coming to terms with his out-of-town relatives' insistence on placing him in more supervised care.
It all raises challenging questions about life and choice. There's also the question of responsibility. Jack Kevorkian can be put in jail. But is there anyone to punish in the case of a machine built for self-termination? Should the people who created websites that this Australian man used be held responsible in some way? With ethics struggling to keep pace with science and technology, the answer is not obvious.
Let me know your thoughts...

The machines must pay and the designers. Judge should melt it down and then make the website people compensate his family

People have a right to take their own life. It is deplorable that we steal away this dignity under the auspices of morality.

Seems like an awfully involved way to go about doing this. Evidently this guy had enough physical ability/strength to build a robot, get it hooked up to a remote control, then have it aim a gun at him so as to properly deliver the fatal shot. I'm curious as to why he did not just take a gun to himself and pull the trigger. Would have saved him a trip to Radio Shack.
Anyhow, I don't know what all the uproar is about. If a person wants to end his life, it's his own business. However, constructing some gun shooting contraption on his driveway might have maimed or killed an innocent bystander. And that would have been a shame.

The government must protect its citizens, even from themselves at times if necessary as it would have been here. If you have website teaching people to make or smuggle bombs and they use that instructions to blow up stuff the website is liable.Same with making meth if the cookers expoald. This site is dangerous and at the minimum has to be shut down.

I would like to invent a robot that could suck on my penis..

These comments have convinced me that there is a very big, and possibly lucrative untapped market. Many people, and especially those named "Jim", would like the opportunity to own their very own penis sucking robot.
Boy, if I had the technical expertise to figure that one out I'd probably be pretty rich.

Gotta weigh in again here with a comment in response to Remember Terri (and I presume this person's name alludes to Terri Schiavo). I for one do not want the government meddling into private and personal decisions like when to end one's own life or a husband's decision to put an end to the suffering of his poor, bed ridden vegetable of a wife. Look, all joking aside, suicide is a horrible for the loved ones of the person who takes his own life. I'm not advocating it and people who are feeling like doing it should get help.
That said, it is a personal decision and one the government should stay out of - in most cases it is hard to prevent an able bodied and determined person from doing it anyway. A lot of tall buildings, sleeping pills, and guns in the world. But I digress.
Getting back to Remember Terri's comment, I suppose by this twisted logic, we should sue Smith and Wesson every time somebody blows his head off with a .38.
It never ceases to amaze me that the same people who are all so caring about preserving life and protecting the world from abortions and euthanasia don't ever seem to give a crap about the suffering of the living. These are the same folks who routinely vote for politicians who slash government healthcare benefits (including mental health programs), food and welfare benefits, job programs, and anything else that could help the truly needy. If they spent half their energy on actually helping people instead of shoving their moral values down our throats, this country might be a better place.

The saddest part of the story is that the family of an 81 yearold guy who was not just smart enough to use a comuter, but could use the internet for research, and could engineer his own gun-toting robot... were going to force this guy into a CARE HOME!
A posthumous well done to you, sir. If I were in that same place, I would have done exactly the same thing: signed myself out of the human race, because I would no longer want to be a member.

The "report" is an urban myth. Nothing of this has been reported in Australia, let alone the Gold Coast. I suspect it is coming from Fox News.

It did come from fox news at one point...that is how I intially found out and I think (if memory serves) referneced another austrialian publication.
I don't agree with suicide, but nursing homes are waiting rooms for death. the fact he had this much ability shows he didn't need that and thfact that his family wouldn't have him live with them is just sick and selfish.
My hat is off to him despite quiting for sticking it to somebody who would stivck him in a home WAY to early....even if he is a quitter....
Regarding the male member sucking device....
They dsign one that can cook and clean as well and the human race will go extinct....

I think legal suicides are not that welcome to the insurance industry. So I think the resistance against self assisted euthanasia comes forth out of financial reasons rather than religious or moral reasons. I am disgusted by the relatives who wanted to force this guy to a care home against his own will.

I'd like to see life insurance cover suicide. You have to put in stipulations that the person cannot off themselves for 10 years from signing the policy or something and charge so much that they build up an annuity over that period that if they did kill themselves the insurer would be covered. I know it sounds crazy but this COULD be profitable.

If it's fake, it's a fake from the Austrailian press. Here are links to two AU articles:
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/2/story.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=10499156
And:
http://news.theage.com.au/qld-man-suicides-with-homemade-machine/20080319-20fz.html
To Birko: Is Fox any worse than the Washington Post? They put a picture of the Terminator at the top of the article. Headlines are designed to get attention - get used to it so long as there is a "for profit" press. It could be worse - news.com.au has "Killer robot shoots man dead on driveway".

You can't punish a machine and I cannot see the people that created the websites being responsible. The websites did not build the robot or get it to pull the trigger.
How about publishing those website addresses?
