Mike Wise and San Valentino

Mike Wise: Does he really look like The Edge?
Anyhow, before I get to that, let's discuss Mike Wise's Valentine's Day. Actually, before I get to that, here's an important message Mike "The Edge" Wise wanted to to pass on to the world:
Mike Wise regrets to inform all e-mailers to his Post account that he accidentally killed out his messages over the last three days, and that's why he hasn't responded to you. Included in those were about 150 e-mails reponding to a column he wrote about Michelle Kwan. [Ed. Note: How many gratuitous WaPo links can I possibly include in this blog?] Whether you want his head for that column or not, please resend your e-mails and he will respond and be a better computer user in the future. He promises. His post email is here. Grazie.
(Speaking of, if I haven't responded to your e-mail, don't be insulted. We are all being subdued into e-mail submission by a hailstorm of "BREAKING NEWS" alerts from the USOC. Sample headlines: "BREAKING NEWS: USA women curlers compete against Japan." "BREAKING NEWS: Rodriguez 10th after first race in women's 500m." "BREAKING NEWS: Oxford English Dictionary revises three definitions on Page 813, Relia-Relib; more updates to follow." Ok, that last one was made up, but gee, is the fact that the U.S. women's curling team will go ahead and participate in its regularly scheduled match against Japan really "BREAKING NEWS?" This is breaking news.)
Anyhow, Mike Wise's Valentine's Day. Aside from the rate card shop employee who brought him Pineapple Upside Down cake, and aside from his extended fake Italian accent-laced delivery of a single red rose to Olympics guru and WaPo editor Tracee Hamilton, Mike Wise helped create a mystery Valentine's Day big cardboard box for the office. After all our co-workers finished their serious Olympics work (circa 2 a.m. local), and after I returned from my strangest adventure yet, we all received our gifts, thoughtfully provided by Mike Wise. The gift list:
Style writer Libby "Libino" Copeland: little plant, [bum]-stuffed Baci chocolate bear and blowing bubbles.
Les "Lesino" Carpenter: Fake spray paint to mess with other papers.
Me "Danilo" Steinberg: Supermarket cheese, possibly Swiss.
Aimee "Aimee" Sanders: Ferraro chocolates and little purple plant.
Amy "Amy" Shipley: Cool little bowl container for knickknacks and excess stress, plus hazelnut chocolates.
Sally Jenkins: Cactus plant, plus hazelnut chocolates.
Tracee "Il Duce" Hamilton: Single red rose, plus cherry-filed Mon Cheri chocolates.
Jill "Jillino" Grisco: Cool rose-colored bag to pick up the salami and croissants she buys for us. [Ed. note: since he appears to be using the plural of salami, I'll let it stand.]
Liz "BeLizzimo" Clarke: Panda-pictured binder and chocolate.
Mike Wise: Marzipan for himself.

as a matter of fact, he does look a bit like the edge. unless he's trying, in that photo, to look like the edge, in which case he is a very good facial mimic. love the blog, danilo. don't let anyone bully you into all-lympics all the time, either. it's the behind-the-scenes, what's-a-wp-reporter's-life-really-like-while-covering-the-olympics beat we want you to cover (walk?). that would necessarily include maids at the press quarters, cheese, your lovely colleagues, valentine's day 7 time zones away from flower merchants selling a dozen roses for $6 (how do they do it?) in the medians of 50-lane highways, etc. so keep it up.
