More curling fans

Just overheard the Indianapolis Star's Bob Kravitz singing curling's praises.

"I'll tell you what, it's pretty fascinating, it really is," he was saying to a colleague.

I asked him why.

"It's the perfect TV sport," he said. "It's like sporting Muzak. Wait, I'm going to use that.

It's not something you'd tailgate to, but it's frozen shuffleboard."

"Eskimo lawn bowling," piped up a Canadian journalist nearby.

"It's bowling," Kravitz said. "Bowling has a huge number in the United States. Why wouldn't this?"

An e-mailer writes:

I am a gov't contractor so I guess I am technically wasting gov't money while reading your blog but oh well. I must follow the curling and cheese excitement. Because of your blog I'm actually going to try curling. The Potomac Curling Club is having an open house at the end of the month and I'm going to give it a shot.

How jealous am I? Very jealous. And why oh why has the Potomac Curling Club not linked to my blog in its Olympics section? That would make me happier than a Gawker.com link, for sure.

Hey there...

I've sent our webmaster a request to add a link to your blog to our homepage's Olympics section.

Also, if you can't make it to the Open House, you can always stop by any Thursday evening for a bit of instruction and a drop-in game.

While I hardly expect Wednesday Night Curling to join the cultural pantheon like Monday Night Football and Sunday Night Baseball, I don't understand why it doesn't at least get some coverage, just as a feeler. Yeah, I've heard it's on OLN sometimes, but just send the Dons (CNBC's commentary team) to the next big international bonspiel, and maybe even sit on the footage until a slow sports time, and stick it on ESPN2. Sigh. A guy can dream, can't he?

Starting to really wish Laurel wasn't so far from me.

You want a mention? All you really had to do was ask...

The Dons (CNBC's commentary team) rock! I really can't praise them enough. They don't overtalk and get so caught up with themselves that they ignore the action (I'm looking at you Tim McCarver). And you can really tell how much they love the sport. Compare them to the team of announcers who do figure skating, no contest. (Do we really need FOUR people to analyze figure skating?)

Ask and ye shall receive. Our webmaster just put up a link to your blog on our Olympics page.
