Sophia Loren and Susan Sarandon
They're both carrying the Olympic Flag tonight. Guess the paparazzi were right. Here's the official word:
"For the first time in history, during the Opening Ceremony, the Olympic Flag will be carried by eight women. Women, from different backgrounds, cultures and professions, all with a strong civil commitment. Eight women representing all women of the world symbolizing peace, fraternity and communication among cultures."
Here are the eight women: Sophia Loren, Susan Sarandon, Isabel Allende, Nawal El Moutawakel (a Moroccan runner), Wangari Maathai (a Kenyan Nobel Laureate), Manuela di Centa (an Italian skier), Maria Mutola (a runner from Mozambique) and Somaly Mam (a Cambodian human rights activist).
I certainly agree that if one were to choose eight women to represent all women of the world, one's choices would include three Olympic gold medalists and two celebrity actresses.

She is a filty rich actress who has some involvement with the charity that causes people to buy animals for the poor... but come on! Someone please explain to me why Susan Sarandon?

Susan Sarandon? My list of choices goes on for miles before it gets to her name. And as for Yoko Oh No...! Who in the world put this opening shindig together?

I was stunned at the choice of Susan Sarandon carrying the flag in Torino. Would love to meet the gem that picked these women. There are so many women in America far more worthy of that honor. How embarassing!!!!

I don't know how they were chosen, but Sophia Loren is a former UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador (same place as Angelina Jolie is an ambassador for), and Susan Sarandon is a current UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
