Summer Mixtape, Track 1: "Uptown Top Ranking" - Althea and Donna
Summer deserves a good soundtrack. So we thought we'd give you one. Every day over the next few weeks J. Freedom and I will offer up a song that sounds especially great cranked up on a hot day. We'll kick things off with what may be the perfect summer song, "Uptown Top Ranking" by Althea and Donna. Even if they never did anything else -- and they pretty much didn't -- their legacy is secure thanks to this Joe Gibbs-produced classic.

"J. Freedom and I will offer up a song...." Doubtful. Producer David will be doing all the work on this one, like he always does.

Track 4: Sun Is Shining, by Bob Marley & the Wailers (Lee Perry version, 1970).
Track 5: Hot Stepper, by Gregory Isaacs.

Black Box Recorder did a pretty good trip-hoppy cover of this song.
