From the Makers of Guitar Hero: Rock Band
The folks behind Guitar Hero just shared, a few minutes ago, some details a new game they're working on called Rock Band, scheduled for release this holiday season.
The best-selling Guitar Hero games have let players tap in to their rockstar fantasies while banging away on a plastic guitar controller to cover versions of modern and classic rock songs.
Guitar Hero 2 let friends play together cooperatively in their living rooms-- as players take lead or rhythm guitar parts in songs like "Message in a Bottle" by The Police. Rock Band is aiming to bring the "co-op" play concept to a new level by bringing a singer and a drummer into the mix, says developer Harmonix. What's more, the whole "band" will be able to get together and jam online-- so that nobody has an excuse for being late to practice. The game is being developed for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
The company didn't announce any songs that will be included with the game, but said that Rock Band will include original recordings, not the cover versions of songs mostly used in the previous Guitar Hero games.
Harmonix chief executive and co-founder Alex Rigopulos said the game will include "classic rock to modern rock...punk to metal to southern rock." Rigopulos said the company is workng with "huge" artists "that have previously been untouchable in the world of video games."
In a conference call that just ended, executives from EMI Music Publishing and Warner/Chappell Music were on hand to confirm that they are providing the company with access to their catalogs for use in the Rock Band. EMI Music, Hollywood Records, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group's Universal Music Enterprises and Warner Music Group's Rhino Entertainment have all agreed to let Harmonix use master recordings.
"We don't just see this as a game," said Rigopulos. "We see this as a platform, a new way for people to experience the music they love"
The first version of Guitar Hero available for the Xbox 360 goes on sale tomorrow. In a promotional event for the Xbox 360 version, the GH2 player with the highest score on the Kiss song "Strutter," one of the tracks in the game, will get to jam out with Kiss singer Gene Simmons at a Virgin Megastore in New York City next week (not a joke).

I hope that they don't limit themselves just to the songs initially released with the game by having new songs periodically released on xbox live that you can buy. The main problem with Guitar Hero is that the track list gets tired.

I say they need to have an exspansion ready, where with the main 4 (vocals, lead guitar, bas and drums) you also can have a second guitar, 2 percussionists, a dj and a sampler......and of course you can play SLIPKNOT HERO!!!!!!!!! (masks sold seperately)
