MMOvie Goes Online

This past October, I wrote a column about a group of friends and filmakers trying to put together an original movie filmed entirely in the online virtual world of the game World of Warcraft. This week, the first installment of "MMOvie" is online.

MMOvie is an ambitious work of "machinima," in which computer or video game characters are recorded, using special software as the act out the project's original screenplay, a comedy about a team of adventurers trying to unearth an ancient treasure. Executive A.J. Loiacono and his fellow moviemakers have hired professional actors to perform the voice acting in the story (The original column perhaps explains all this a little better....)

Loiacono recently dropped me a line to let me know that the first ten minutes of the the project is online now at his company's Web site. The crew plans to release new installments every few weeks, for a total of about 10 episodes.

A trailer that the group released last year to promote the project became something of a hit among game fans; the promo was viewed over three million times at video sharing sites like YouTube.
