Debate Watch - Literally

It's a day before the big event -- the first real debate of the governor's race.

No. You can't watch it at home. It's not televised. But that's not keeping Democrat Tim Kaine from organizing "Debate Watch" parties across Virginia for Saturday morning.

Huh? How do you watch a debate that's not televised?

Kaine's operation says the debate will be "live-blogged" by their own campaign staff at www.tk4g.org. It's not clear what exactly that means, but for those of you hard-core political junkies, you can sign on to find out.

Kaine is also trying to organize a canvass of the state during the debate. Apparently, he's trying to make the point that while the candidates may have to debate in West Virginia (that's where the sponsoring Virginia Bar Association holds its annual meeting), its better to focus on people who can actually vote in the Nov. 8 election.

Democrats are also rallying in Covington (a Virginia town near the West Virginia border) Friday evening. Kaine and his ticketmates -- attorney general candidate Creigh Deeds and lieutenant governor candidate Leslie Byrne -- will be there.

Republican Jerry Kilgore, meanwhile, is hunkered down, prepping. The third candidate, independent Russ Potts, has not been invited.

Why is Jerry Kilgore so afraid of a debate with Tim Kaine? Could it be that it isn't so much the "accent" he has -- as it is the lack of substance to what he says.

I don't care if the guy sounds like Donald Duck in a "Dukes of Hazzard" movie. I do care that the next Governor of Virginia has something to say and isn't afraid to say it.

Ms. Wolf, one would expect a Kaine partisan like yourself to make the preposterous claim that Kilgore is "afraid" to debate Kaine on the eve of their debate.

Kaine is behind, so he wants more debates. That's a time-honored political position. If the situation were reversed, I'd bet that Kaine wouldn't want to debate every week and Kilgore would be clamoring for debates.

Jerry Kilgore has had plenty to say about his proposals; you just don't like it.

We should all just "chill" and let this race unfold on real issues. Nobody but the junkies are paying attention right now, anyway.

You want to talk about real issues? Here's a real issue:

What did Jerry Kilgore DO as Virginia's Attorney General when he learned that a man(white)selling a home told a prospective buyer (black)that he would never sell the property to a "N*****" (Hint: Rhymes with bigger)?

Kilgore authorized a settlement offer that would have ONLY required the man to take two hours of class on fair housing law, at taxpayer expense.

At an April 13 meeting, the Virginia Fair Housing Board rejected that offer. The board chairman declined to detail why it refused the proposal from the attorney general's office.

Of far greater import here is WHY did Kilgore think this appropriate? Mrs. Pitts' attorney noted: "That is not a serious settlement proposal given the facts of the case ... Were they planning to pass out Happy Meals with little Confederate flags?"

Next time you see Jerry, ask him what in the world he was thinking. You can "chill" all you want, and I hope you do. I intend to continue to work hard to make sure Tim Kaine -- the most qualified candidate -- gets elected Governor of Virginia.

Thanks for that vignette.

I'm sure all your hard work for Tim Kaine won't distract you from your work with the highly regarded Richmond schools system.

You're welcome. And thank you for noticing that there has been significant --and continuing -- improvement in the Richmond Public Schools system.

In fact, schools all across the Commonwealth of Virginia have shown dramatic improvement during the administration of Gov. Mark Warner and Lt. Governor Tim Kaine.

What do people think about Kaine ditching the Million Mom March gun controllers?
