NASCAR Race to Richmond

So here it is, the real Race to Richmond.

Jerry Kilgore unveiled today the Jerry Kilgore car, a soon-to-be real, live entry in the Nextel Cup series. The car, driven by Hermie Sadler, will race at the Martinsville Speedway on Oct. 23.

Kilgore didn't just stand by the car today. He tossed caution to the wind and actually climbed in the drivers seat. (Several NACSAR representatives standing nearby said they were impressed with his deftness.)

Grinning a big grin, he grabbed the steering wheel and flashed his pearly whites for the television and still cameras. No, he said, this is not a shameless political stunt. "It's about supporting racing in Virginia," he said.

Delacey Skinner, a spokeswoman for the Tim Kaine campaign, declined to make the expected jokes about the Kilgore campaign going around and around in circles until election day. And she didn't say anything about the prospect that the Kilgore car might actually lose the race on Oct. 23.

"I don't think that Jerry's unveiling a NASCAR car today is going to distract from the fact that he hasn't shown any real leadership on the issues like education and jobs," she said, boringly.

Whether you are or are not a Nascar fan... you have to admit this is pretty cool!

Everyone in Virginia genuflects to NASCAR, but we don't get much information on where the candidates stand on proposed or current state-sponsored programs related to the sport.

Here's a good question for the candidates: How much in state subsidies would you be willing to fork over to get the NASCAR Hall of Fame to Virginia?

Here's another one: How effective has Gov. Warner's "Motorsports Initiative" been in your opinion? Would you continue singling out the motorsports industry to get a special state loan program, or would you single out other industries, like day care, technology, or something else?

I think we have the answer to the only question that candidates seem to be asked: "Are you a NASCAR fan or what?"

So, Kaine's response is; "I like NASCAR too!" How lame. There is no way that Kaine is going to win the rural vote like Warner did in '01. This is Kilgore's election to lose.

The boys think they are in the driver's seats on this one. Hah! This election will be decided by the women of Virginia. That is if we can get the time off from home and work duties to actually vote.

Kilgore and Kaine are basically ignoring the female electorate -- except to engage in twiddle-twaddle about abortion rights. Frankly, the more "blah-blah-blah" I hear outta both Kaine and Kilgore's your mouths, the more I think their Mommas made a big mistake.

The fact that abortion is the only issue either candidate identifies as concerning women makes me wonder about the little women these two left at home. Kaine's wife is a judge -- what's Kilgore's wife's excuse?

Why is the press so content to let the boys run in circles saying the same old nothing? Ovah and ovah.

Let's talk money. How much money does the average Virginia family take home? The average man? The average woman? How much does a Virginia high school graduate stand to make in the job market? College graduate? Does either candidate have a plan for lowering college costs? Increasing take-home pay?

Now, tell the truth, what difference will it really make at the bank if we elect Kaine or Kilgore this fall?

And, don't even try to give us any raggedy talk about how much we could save on a "school supply" tax rebate puh-leeze!

Will somebody ask a "hard" question and expect a "real" answer? Hellooooooo.....

Well...if we elect Kilgore, we'll most likey see a rollback of the Warner tax reform, meaning a lower sales tax and a lower tobacco tax. We'll also see an increase in your personal property taxes so that localities can make up for the money they lost, so you'll probably end up paying the same amount in taxes, just a different kind of tax....

The Commonwealth won't be able to pay it's bills on time, and we'll loose our AAA bond rating. We won't be able to secure good loans and the state government will end up paying more and more money for the same goods, meaning we'll go deep into deficit. Then we'll eventually have to raise taxes even higher to make up for it.

So, "Not JanetGuthrie", no, money won't magically appear in your bank account of Tim Kaine gets elected this fall. But you also won't be royally screwed in a couple of years like you will under Kilgore.
