Commander in Chief

George Bush is coming to Virginia.

On Friday, Bush is scheduled to give a major policy speech in Norfolk, according to a senior GOP source. The president will talk about the war on terrorism. He'll talk about Iraq. He'll talk about national politics.

But the big question? Will he talk about Jerry Kilgore?

The event is, after all, being billed as a "presidential" event, not a "political" one. It's not even clear whether the Kilgore campaign, or Jerry himself, will be there.

This week, indictments are possible against Karl Rove, Scooter Libby and maybe others. The possibility exists that Bush's speech will be the first one after indictments, giving the press a natural story line: Bush tries to change the subject.

In addition, a Bush event with no Kilgore will raise the specter that the Virginia Republican has no interest in being seen with the commander in chief.

Asked for a reaction, aides to Democrat Tim Kaine declined -- for now. It's likely they might have more to say after they've chewed on this a bit.

So will the Bush visit help? Will it hurt?

Stay tuned. Nov. 8 is just around the corner.

Larry Sabato: "For the first time since President Nixon in 1973, a GOP President became a burden for a GOP gubernatorial nominee." The GOP's brand of hard-boiled politics is beginning to backfire.

And, the Republican gubernatorial nominee already appears to be "channeling" Richard M. "The press is the enemy" Nixon both in attitude towards the media and in his misguided and (ultimately) illegal efforts (per Judge Sirica) to keep tape-recordings of conversations from the American public.

Wanna bet, Mr. FORMER Attorney General, that the legal reasoning that Judge Sirica applied to FORMER President Nixon, applies to you, too, concerning TAPE RECORDINGS OF PUBLIC DEBATES AND DEPOSITIONS CONCERNING ILLEGAL ACTIONS OF ELECTED GOVERNMENTAL OFFICIALS?
