A Tall Addition

While guard Jason Clark and center Zack Crimmins have garnered much of the attention from college coaches visiting O'Connell this fall, the Knights' newest player also is catching their eye. Frank Ben-Eze, a 6-foot-11 Nigerian, should prove to be an interesting addition to O'Connell's lineup, joining the 7-foot Crimmins...

A Wright/Freeman Backcourt?

Could Georgetown land two of the Washington area's top guards? It seems possible, if not likely. All-Met guard Austin Freeman of DeMatha committed to the Hoyas before last season and two-time All-Met guard Chris Wright of St. John's has narrowed his choices to Georgetown, North Carolina State and Pittsburgh....

7-footer Taking His Time

National Christian center Anthony McClain, a third-team All-Met last season, entertained coaches from Connecticut and Pittsburgh during home visits over the past week, Coach Trevor Brown said. Virginia Tech and Charlotte also remain in the mix for the 7-foot senior, Brown said. McClain has yet to take any official...

Who's That Coach?

A friend of mine passes on this story of the absurd where the quarterback's father served as an "advanced scout" by posing as a college recruiter and filming practice of the team's upcoming opponent. At least the guy was creative. Most Washington-area football coaches are paranoid about other teams...

A New Feature

We're debuting a new feature in Wednesday's paper, a weekly feature called "The Next Level" that will highlight one of the Washington area's elite college sports prospects. The debut is about Seneca Valley lineman Donald Langley, who has gone from mid-level prospect to top recruit after posting sensational numbers...

Mason-Bound

Freedom-Woodbridge guard Cameron Long has committed to play for George Mason, the D.C. Examiner reported today. It shouldn't be too big a surprise: Freedom Coach Ahmad Dorsett played at Mason for Coach Jim Larranaga. Here's a link to the Freedom Web site, which also has the news....

A Tough Break

Surrattsville football coach Tom Green hoped that quarterback Andre Johnson - entering his third season as a starter - would prosper on the field, earn a college scholarship and lead the Hornets to their first playoff berth. However, after Johnson torn knee ligaments during preseason practice, Green said his...

A Sly Fox?

Got an e-mail this morning from Progressive Christian basketball coach Van Whitfield, who writes that fourth-team All-Met guard Jerimiah Bowman has received a scholarship offer from Marist. Marist plans to visit Bowman next week and it is expected that Bowman will then commit to the Red Foxes, Whitfield said....

More Knight Time

Ballou linebacker Romale Tucker has committed to play for Virginia, Knights assistant coach Todd Amis said yesterday. Tucker, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound, outside linebacker also considered Syracuse, Illinois and North Carolina, Amis said. He had visited Virginia twice, including once last month, and called the Cavaliers coaching staff on Sunday...

More on Grant...

Oops! I had Jerai Grant's schedule of college visits in my notebook for more than a week before posting the information. Then, a few hours later, I get a call from DeMatha Coach Mike Jones, giving me the news that - during the first of those five visits --...

Knight Time

Forestville Coach Charles Harley was an interested observer Saturday when Akron played at Penn State: Three of his former players were suited up for the season opener. Andre Jones, an All-Met in 2004, started at free safety for Akron and had six tackles and broke up two passes, though...

A Busy Month...

Does anyone have a busier schedule this month than DeMatha forward Jerai Grant? The son of former NBAer Harvey Grant, Jerai is spending this weekend on an official visit to Clemson. Next weekend, it's off to Notre Dame, which just happens to be hosting Penn State in football. The...
