An Interesting Night...
In the gym last night at Bishop McNamara were William & Mary Coach Tony Shaver and assistant Antwon Jackson. The Tribe, which plays tonight at George Mason, had previously offered a scholarship to Gonzaga junior forward Max Kenyi. Good Counsel Coach Mike Hibbs and O'Connell Coach Joe Wootten also were in attendance, scouting for upcoming games. (Good Counsel was scheduled to play O'Connell last night, but the game was postponed because the gym in Good Counsel's new Olney location was not ready.)
While Kenyi and Bishop McNamara guard Jay Gavin (signed with Marist) were the two best-known players on the court last night, it was the shortest player on the court who was the most impressive. Junior guard Marc Hill, generously listed at 5 feet 8, showed height isn't the most important thng on the corut, continually getting to the basket and either scoring or passing to teammates in good position. Hill already holds scholarship offers from High Point, Elon and College of Charleston, according to McNamara Coach Marty Keithline.
McNamara center Talib Zanna, a 6-9 sophomore from Nigeria, is about one month from returning from his broken ankle. He is still on crutches, though it is hoped a cast will be removed in two weeks. In a short amount of time, Zanna received plenty of college attention, including a visit from Kansas assistant coach Joe Dooley.
In football, Gonzaga standout junior WR-DB Cameron Johnson holds a scholarship offer from Maryland and is getting mail from Notre Dame and West Virginia. Johnson said he likes Maryland, but is not close to making any decisions.
