Springbrook Player Getting Looks

C.J. Garner worked his way into a role as Springbrook's sixth man last season and this season this lefthanded junior guard is developing as a college prospect. George Mason and Towson are recruiting the 6-foot Garner, who scored 38 and 31 points this week in victories over Walter Johnson and Sherwood, respectively.

"He's not a real big guy, he's very quick and fast," Springbrook Coach Tom Crowell said. "He drives to the basket and he finishes very well. He's a slasher. He's got a fair outside shot, but when he drives to the basket, he's hard to stop."

After beating Sherwood 75-67 to improve to 11-1, Crowell said that Sherwood guard Deontay Twyman - better known as an All-Met quarterback - "is the best player in the county in my opinion. As good a player as he is in football, he's a better basketball player."

Springbrook has a good game against Blake (9-2) on Friday. Other Friday games to watch include No. 13 Bishop McNamara at No. 3 St. John's and St. John's (Md.) at No. 1 Montrose Christian as Montrose Coach Stu Vetter faces his previous school. St. John's (Md.) previously was known as St. John's/Prospect Hall. The game should be a good test for St. John's (Md.) forward Nikita Mescheriakov, who is the younger brother of former George Washington standout Yegor Mescheriakov and holds scholarship offers from several mid-major schools.
