A Look At Maryland's Quarterbacks
Here's an interesting take on Maryland, its quarterback problems and whether Ralph Friedgen should shoulder the blame. I think there are some valid points here, especially looking back at the Fridge's ability to churn out talented players like Joe Hamilton at Georgia Tech.
However, I think there are two other things that need to be taken into account. First, recruiting is hit or miss and the results are most obvious at a position like quarterback. Certainly, Jordan Steffy and Jeremy Ricker were high-profile recruits who haven't lived up to such billing. But, more importantly, I think it's important to look at the quarterbacks from Friedgen's most successful seasons.
Shaun Hill, Scott McBrien and Sam Hollenbach (in 2006) all had one thing in common: They were experienced. Hill started at Hutchinson Community College and had half a season of playing time at Maryland before he played for Friedgen. McBrien had started half a season at West Virginia before he became Friedgen's starter. Hollenbach in 2006 was much better than he was in 2005. Anyone think this could be due to the complex demands on Maryland's quarterback?

The problem is recruiting the local talent. Other than a cursory look around PG county not much effort is placed in scouting the rest of Maryland. If and when a QB is evaluated based on his talent as opposed to his physical stats, and the "RIVALS" hype then we may get a decent QB. To often the 6'0" 6'1" guy doesn't even get a look because he doesn't have the "Measurables" (i.e. 6'4", 225). If your always looking at the Rival stars you miss the real ones. I bet far more unrated recruits have been succesful at the college level than 3 and 4 start recruits.

It's just amazing to me that Michigan can start a freshman and beat Penn State and MD QB's can't start for 4 seasons and still need a season to mature.
