It Gets Weirder Yet In Nevada

So Kevin Hart isn't going to Cal. If he's lucky, maybe Jerry Glanville and Portland State will take him.

Now comes this story: Fernley High football coach Mark Hodges has sued the Lyon County School District for $20,000 for defamation in the wake of the most bizarre recruiting story I can remember.

Hodges' lawyer, Ken McKenna, tells the Associated Press:

"Kevin really did pull off, I guess, one of the greatest pranks ever on Fernley High and the school district and the community of Fernley. "My take on it is there was such a desire in that community to believe it was true -- that one of their young men could get this kind of attention -- that everybody forgot to check it out." "The sad part now is that some adults don't like being embarrassed and they want a scapegoat. They want to hang it on somebody rather than laughing it off and saying, 'Got me.'".

Said it before, I'll say it again: This is going to end ugly. Every coach I talked to about this story had the same reaction: How could the adults let this situation reach such a point that a school-wide assembly was held. Did the parents know nothing? Did the coaches? Didn't the coach know something was amiss, or at least suspect it? That, and the television report that a Cal assistant coach sent an email to a Fernley assistant that Hart did not have a scholarship offer.
