Mountaineers Make Local Pitch

While it's already been a big week for local quarterbacks to make their decisions, Seneca Valley junior Xavier Hughes picked up his first scholarship offer this week as West Virginia offered the 6-2, 170-pounder as a defensive back. Hughes had 65 tackles and three interceptions this past season for the Screamin' Eagles, his second season starting at free safety.

"He's a heavy hitter, I think that's what they like about him," Seneca Valley Coach Fred Kim said. "He's extremely physical, long and rangy. The guy is a baller, so I'm not surprised. I know he can play. And he should play some wideout for us this year."

Although it was the first written offer for Hughes, Kim expects it won't be long before Hughes has more options.

"He's got a gazillion letters from everyone," Kim said. "Once the first one goes, they tend to fall like dominos."
