Armwood Out of U-18 Trials; He and Vinson ave Short Lists
Montrose Christian forward Isaiah Armwood opted out of next week's USA Basketball under-18 team trials in Washington because he cannot afford to take off from summer school as he wants to ensure he is eligible to play as a college freshman, Montrose Coach Stu Vetter said.
"It's an honor to be asked to try out," Vetter said, adding that he was proud to have two invitees, with All-Met Terrell Vinson scheduled to participate. "I know it's a difficult decision for him, because anytime you get an opportunity to represent your country it's an opportunity that doesn't come along very often.
"This is a big summer for him in a lot of different ways. You have to establish your priorities and what you need to do."
Vetter said that Armwood has whittled his college choices to Villanova, Texas and Syracuse. Vinson is down to Maryland, Georgetown, Duke and Villanova, Vetter said. Guard Tristan Spurlock has left Montrose, Vetter said, adding that incoming freshman Justin Anderson from Spotsylvania has enrolled and will play on the varsity this winter. Anderson received special permission to play on Courtland's JV team this past season.
"He's one of the most talented freshman I've ever had," Vetter said. "He's 6-5 - a good 6-5 - he rebounds and shoots and passes. He has a good game for his age, a complete game."

It's too bad Armwood couldn't keep up with his high school studies at Montrose and needs summer school in order to meet NCAA eligibility requirements. That didn't used to be an issue for most players at Montrose.

How come you didn't report on the arrest of Dominique Budd, scholarship athlete and all-Met player, who was arrested for robbery in Ocean City? Beating a guy senseless and taking his money.

Ocean City police say they arrested two-time First Team All-Sentinel football player Clifton "Dominique" Budd and an accomplice and charged them with strong-arm robbery and second-degree assault from an incident that occurred June 10 in Ocean City.
According to police, Budd was on the boardwalk with three friends when Budd and another man approached their victim. Police say Budd and his friends struck the victim on the head, drove him to the ground and took his money and a baseball cap.
Police say the injuries were not serious.
An Ocean City Police Department incident report names two assailants and says the two got away with $14 in cash as well as personal property.
When police arrested Budd and the accomplice, police say they still had the victim's money and cap.
Brandon Fairchild, 19, was charged with theft and a misdemeanor.
Budd, 18, was charged with robbery and second-degree assault. He will have a preliminary hearing on July 11 at the courthouse in Ocean City. His lawyer Andrew Whitehead could not be reached for comment as of press time.
Budd is an incoming freshman at Bowie State University where he will play on its football team. Athletics spokesman Gregory Goings said he has not encountered situations like this before and declined to comment on Budd's prospect of remaining on the team due to criminal charges.
"It's up to the legal proceedings to decide," he said.
Police say they are still investigating the crime and further arrests could be pending.
Budd had been a standout receiver and running back at Olney's Sherwood High School.
Last year's scouting report in The Sentinel's annual high school football guide noted, "Budd is an outstanding athlete who has the ability to carry a team on his back."
