Redskins Insider, by Jason La Canfora Redskins Insider

Monday Afternoon H-Back

Yesterday provided the rarest of opportunities for an NFL scribe - a Sunday not spent at a stadium consumed solely by the game you are assigned to cover. So when I wasn't changing Chloe's diapers, navigating the stroller through a maze of people at the Old Town Art Fair, or begging my toddler to put down a french fry and eat at least one chicky nugget for daddy, I was keeping an eye on some football (or foozeball, as Kathy Bates would say in "The Water Boy" or "Manball" as Chloe and I would say, since, unfortunately, man seems to be her favorite word these days and she utters it literally every time she sees an older person of the opposite sex. Yeah, I'm worried. I'm pushing hard for her to be a nun this Halloween, and every Halloween henceforth, but me fears I'll be overruled).

So what caught my eye? Here goes:

1) The Curse of Todd Collins Is No Joke. The dude is in KC like 8 years, never gets a start, and spends the entire time as a backup 'cause the starter never gets hurt. So Collins follows his mentor Al Saunders to DC this offseason, and Trent Green can't even make it through three quarters back in KC. The poor guy nearly got decapitated yesterday, leaving the field strapped on a stretcher with a concussion.

Of course, the Chiefs were quick to point out how good Green is doing and how it's not that serious - the talking heads of FOX, NBS and CBS were all spouting off about this during the 4 pm games - but they're not the one's with a brain that just collided with its skill, are they? I have to think Green's streak of 5 straight years without missing a regular season game is in big-time trouble. What does all of this mean for Mark Brunell? You'd have to think it bodes well, right, not to jinx it or anything. I'm just saying.

2) The highlight of LaVar Arrington's night was when he uttered the classic "School of Hard Knocks" line during the segment where the starters are introduced. I love that guy. Now, I'll admit I was watching at a bar with a friend and throwing back some pints of Stella, so I may have missed a play or two. But I was watching as closely as you can under the circumstances, and while I saw Antonio Pierce all over the place, I didn't see LaVar stand out. It's his first game with a new team, so there's some natural adjustment there.

Overall, I thought the G-men looked pretty stout. Why they did not feed Tiki the ball more, I'll never know. I thought they did a heck of a job against Big Brother Manning and were by far the better team, but poor coaching decisions and Eli's ridiculous, wrong-sided handoff at midfield gave BBM just the kind of opening he thrives on, and the dagger came. The pass interference call on Carter was one of the worst calls I have ever seen, and killed any chance of a win for New York. Still, I thought they looked legit.

Now, Indy, on the other hand, is heading for a dropoff. That defense was getting gashed and killed at the LOS, and the Colts running game was horrid. Yeah, it's just one game, but I think BBM is the second coming of Marino. Ten fingers and no rings.

3) How 'bout them Cowboys? Ouch. Sure looked good for about 10 minutes, then the same old problems. Crushing turnovers. Inconsistent running game. Defense that seems to bend more as the game goes on. And, best of all for Redskins Nation, another kicking fiasco. Could you imagine the Tuna on the flight home from Jacksonville? He finally goes out and gets a proven kicker, his owner spends big time for Vanderjagt, and he can't go in the opening game. So Parcells is forced to use another kid kicker, and he hits the upright from 36 yards with a chance to sway momentum in the second half. Some things never change

Okay, so that's what I know. Here's what I'm thinking:

1) I was only about 50 percent in my "Guess The Practice Squad" effort. Could redemption come tonight when we play "Guess The Inactives?" Let's see. I'll go with Shawn Springs and Renaldo Wynn as injured guys. Jason Campbell as the No. 3 QB. FB Nemo Broughton (although this spot could be RB Rock Cartwright). S Reed Doughty. DL Anthony Montgomery. OL Jim Molinaro (maybe they dress him over the new T Wade they just signed, since he would know the system better. This could be a toss up). The last one is tough. Since Khary Campbell can play multiple LB positions, do they sit Posey and go with 5 LBs? I could see them go with 4 WR and sit Patten, perhaps. Guess I'll say Posey sits.

2) I have a feeling the offense is going to go after Smooty tonight. I just have a hunch they'll target him a lil bit.

3) These Nike "Briscoe High" commercials are lame. (Not as lame as this new Dunkin Donuts campaign, the horrible one about "public-interest stories." Who green lighted that braincramp?). It's just not working for me. Maybe it looked good on paper, but something's lacking the execution.

4) This will be the best season of "The Wire." I keep reading it. I just have that feeling. But I speak from no experience. Have the first episode of the season on Tivo and will watch it at some point this week. Which reminds me. Got to set the Tivo for tonight's game while I am thinking of it. Okay, that'll bring this MMHB to a close.

I do have one question for you guys, though, of the metrosexual variety: Is it too late in the summer season to rock a light brown suit? I think it's still cool, and I figured I'd get a little more use out of it on the Fox 5 pregame show before the weather changes, but I could be dissuaded. I'm leaving NoVa by 3 pm at the latest to get the FedEx. I'd suggest you leave early and often as well. Cheers.

Hi Jason,

What was up with the gameday coverage this morning? Just the one Redskins Gameday page and nothing else? I know there's only so much you can do after the special preview section last week, but I was surprised at the lack of coverage this morning. There are plenty of compelling stories/questions (Portis!) heading into tonight. What gives? And while I'm at it, what gives with Portis? Thanks!

p.s. who's your squad in the EPL?

Posted by: Wes Mantooth | September 11, 2006 11:57 AM

No problem with the light brown suit. It's still perfectly acceptable to wear it.

Speaking of commercials, I love the one with BBM where he pretends to be someone else in a hideous wig. Too funny!

Posted by: Sherry | September 11, 2006 12:19 PM

The brown suit is money. Fall, brown, it'll be a nice contrast/compliment with the Burgunday and Gold.

How do you know read too much Redskins coverage? When you respond to a reporter's request about wardrobe.

Bold Prediction: Trent Green is done. That is the hardest hit I've ever seen to the head. That made La Var's hit on Aikman look like a hug. I slow motioned the slow motion on ESPN last night and it looks like the video is missing frames it's so fast.

3pm leave is cutting it close...

What's the prediction for tonight, Jason? Lay it on us. I'm thinking 27-14... SKINS!!

Seriously though, being around them last week, what was the overall feeling/attitude of the team heading into the weekend (spoken and/or unspoken)? Did they seem upbeat and excited for MNF, or was there a little bit of a preseason hangover still lingering?

Definitely rock the brown, man. As long as you're not getting your suit recommendations from Deion, I think you'll be alright...

Posted by: Bucktown Skins Fan | September 11, 2006 12:35 PM

Speaking of Deion, I think you should ditch the brown and don a bright, loud burgandy and gold suit, with white shoes. That'll show your objectiveness.

Wes Mantooth, you stole me thunder dude. On my list of things to blog about down the line, I have a riff on Wes Mantooth being the best fake name ever. To me, even funnier than a lot of the stuff in Fletch.
Did you miss the huge front page story Howard wrote with the massive graphic?
That's usually what we do game day because the day before a game there is no access and nothing going on. We have a large story with a big layout, and a page devoted to the game on the inside.
That's decided way over my head. Got to call on Editor Cindy for that one.
My favorite team is Leeds - in the CCC again - so I don;t have a true fav in the EPL right now. Reading is growing on me, though, and with their American bent - and maybe Gooch added down the line - it's hard not to like them. Have a soft spot for Fulham for simiular reasons - McBride and Bocanegra scoring over the weekend and Howard with a clean sheet in the Mersyside Derby, what a weekend for the Yanks.

Players are way fired up for the game. Maybe a little too hyped. Probably some nervous energy early. I suck at predictions but will say 20-14 Skins.

Sherry - BBM gets on my nerves now. I think he's a one-trick pony in these commercials. It's played out to me.

Glad all are in agreement on the brown.
Guess I'll leave at 2:30 to play it safe. Chloe geting up from afternoon nap. Gotta run.
Cheers.

Those of us who have the choice of playing Betts or Portis on our fantasy teams tonight are desperate for Portis updates. PLEASE, what do you know? This is the time for the "Redskins Insider" to shine.

Who caught VH1's metal documentary on Saturday night? (turned out to be way more interesting than the Tx-OSU game.) I highly recommend trying to catch it in reruns. Very well done and very interesting exploration of metal and some issues related to the music.

BBM is definetly getting ZERO rings. You can take that to the bank. Did you start drinking already?

Posted by: Manassas | September 11, 2006 1:22 PM

Don't know about Jason, but I just flew in to DC and I'm getting loaded before the game.

I was able to hit the Pittsburgh game on Thursday (LOVE Heinz Field...especially love how close it is to downtown), the Patriots game on Sunday morning (HATE the Razor Blade...where the heck is Foxborough???), and the Giants game last night (Giants Stadium looks like a latrine, which makes sense given that it's in Jersey).

For the record: What's with all the gushing over the Cardsinals' stadium? That stadium looks like a urinal cake designed by a post-modern Danish designer.

As for the brown suit: Jason, do you want to talk to my tailor? He'll take care of you and you'll never, ever have a suit color question again.

Oh, and major props to Howard on the story this morning. Truly excellent job.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 11, 2006 2:05 PM

Jason, it's all about EVERTON! Adopt them while Leeds are in the Championship.

I saw Howard's piece. I was really just fishing for a Portis update.

Thanks, yo.

I am also underwhelmed by the Briscoe High commercials. The Coors Light press conference ones are also kind of disappointing. With all the computer generated stuff (i.e. the Burger King ones), they resort to cutaways?

Posted by: tallbear | September 11, 2006 2:54 PM

I love the Briscoe high commercials. if only pro football was more like high school (and high school less like pro football).

Anyone know if kickoff is exactly at 7pm, or if that's just when the coverage starts and at about 7:35 or so they'll finally get around to starting the clock?

Posted by: OD | September 11, 2006 2:54 PM

I love the Briscoe High commercial, especially the Lee Corso cameo as the mascot.

Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | September 11, 2006 3:30 PM

Rando is right, Trent Green is done. When I saw the hit, I was surprised that he wasn't dead! That hit was, by far, the hardest blow to the head that I have ever seen in any sport (boxing included). Whatever happened to the fact that you are not supposed to hit a QB that "gives himself up" with the front-first slide. Geathers should be looking at a huge fine and a weekend in street clothes. Hopefully Trent is ok.

Posted by: Re: Trent Green | September 11, 2006 3:37 PM

Remember Jumpy Geathers? That guy was awesome.

Posted by: Jumpy Geathers | September 11, 2006 3:47 PM

I still say start Betts.

I caught that VH1 doc but was doing like 3 things at once. Definitely want to catch it again and pay better attention.

P Diddy - you're more of a globetrotter than Wilbon. Damn, that's an impressive weekend.

Wes - I like the Toffees a lot, way back to when Joe-Max Moore was scoring goals for them. Andy Johnson was stud signing. Basically, there are a bunch of teams I like watching play, then a few I love to root against - Gooners, ManU, L'pool off the top of my head.

The Coors Light commercials are even weaker than Briscoe High. I concur.

Posted by: Jason La Canfora | September 11, 2006 4:02 PM

Jason, what happened to Coy Gibbs? Is he still quality controlling the offense? Or did he lose his inspector's liscense after last year (or maybe even the year before)?

Posted by: Ricky Rage | September 11, 2006 4:30 PM

With all the talk of NY and Dallas being the best... did anyone notice the Eagles looked pretty good yesterday? And the upcoming schedule for them is soft at best. NFC East will be a dog fight for sure. Joe, Lee Corso cameo was great, but overall the "high school football spirit" theme didn't elicit a boyish sense of wonder in me. That and I couldn't believe some highschool kid taking out LT like that.

Let's hope Tony, Joe and Mike can conjure up a stellar performance a la John Madden and Al Michaels. Those two were great last night (meaning Al Michaels was great and John Madden has a pretty sweet EAsports game named after him)

Posted by: Dorf | September 11, 2006 4:36 PM

Coy is still here, doing same stuff as before.

Corso as the mascot is cute, but those commercials don't say anything. And the scene with Uhrlacher in the classroom is painful. Coors Light it worse, though.
I agree that Madden's time has passed. He manages to say nothing at all, yet seems to be always talking.

Posted by: Jason La Canfora | September 11, 2006 4:55 PM

J Man, was SSprings injured during preseason requiring the tummy tuck, or was this lingering from last season?

I love the M Boys last night calling out #55 and what a threat he was in a hurried throw by BBM. Reversed it back and 55 wasn't even close to the LOS.

The Wire was great last night. Another good season. Think nail gun.

Brown is still good.

Late.

Posted by: SSK | September 11, 2006 5:10 PM

Boy, I'm disagreeing with everything today. John Madden is the familiar voice of the NFL. Sure, sometimes he carries on about his turducken more than might be necessary, and you've heard all his cliches a thousand times (e.g. "You can't coach speed"), but he beats every other commentator hands-down. Theisman, Collinsworth, et al can't come close.

Listening to Madden is kind of like listening to your grandfather tell war stories, sure you've heard them all before, but you listen anyway and appreciate it for what it is.

Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | September 11, 2006 5:12 PM

Fantasy football messes with your head. I need a TD tonight from Jermaine Wiggins, of all people.

Oh...and if we're forced to look at Tom and Katie (she of the TMJ grin) more than the one obligatory "oh look who's in the owner's box!"....I shall not be responsible for my actions. We get it and we're thrilled. Move on ^8
