Random Tuesday
Should be pretty quiet out here today with no practice. Not expecting much from The Park today ... Taylor Jacobs looks like he is slipping into oblivion on The Left Coast. Dressed for the first two games with San Fran, did not catch a ball, and was inactive for Week 3. Wonder if he will make it through the season out there. Mike Rumph hasn't been great, but has been serviceable the last few weeks. Given the abundance of receivers here, have to say Skins probably got the best of that trade ... Wondering if anyone else caught the latest promotion at Six Flags (and, no, it's not two-for-one admittance to any patron who converts to Scientology, but that might be coming if this is any indication. Here's a little something-something that moved on the AP wire recently:
GURNEE, Ill. - Why wait in line when you can just eat a cockroach?
That's the question Six Flags Great America is asking its thrill seekers during its Halloween-themed FrightFest. The amusement park is daring customers to eat a live Madagascar hissing cockroach in exchange for unlimited line-jumping privileges.
The promotion, which has Lake County Health Department officials shaking their heads, starts Oct. 7.
Anyone who chows down the entire 2- to 3-inch horned cockroach -- a feat reminiscent of TV reality shows -- gets a pass for four people to cut to the front of ride lines through Oct. 29.Park officials insist it's safe to eat the crunchy critters, but health officials are cautioning participants. Consuming live roaches might increase risks of gastrointestinal illness and allergies, according to Bill Mays, Lake County Health Department's community health inspector.
Sounds like good clean family fun. Do you think The Snyder and Too Crazy Tom Cruise indulged on a few bugs during their recent pilgrimage To Six Flags to test for any side effects?

JLC, any update on Gardner, Rod in KC?
By the way, My boy the Governer and I have 2 new things that we do.
1) If we don't like someone, we say their name like a website: 'Yeah, that dude elimanning.com over there is a real puke'.
2) We always refer to Gardner, Rod as (Gardner comma Rod) because it is condescending and we owe him at least that much for being the worst dude the skins have had on our squad over the last 20 years. After he would drop a pass and then make laughter on the sideline we might say: "Gardner, Rod...Coach wants to see you. Bring your playbook." It was our dream that he would be cut and then fail wherever he went.
I thought the exchanges yesterday were spirited. And we are nothing if not spirited.
Always remember that if it was 3rd and 6, Art Monk always got 7. Out.

Gardner, Rod. I love it.
Blog law - he shall be referred to in that manner from here on out.
Should we go ahead and man law it as well? You guys will have to weigh in from the round table.
I don't think Gardner, Rod, has been been active yet but I'll find out.

You know where I stand JLC. This is your shabingus so you should decide; how much of a consensus do we need to enact Man Law on this forum? Also, what about Megskin? She is a lady-dude who is a tight contributor. She should get a vote the same as the rest of us.
OK, put me down for officially referring to Gardner, Rod as such in this space.

Didn't Snyder ever see 'Men In Black'? Don't step on the cockroaches! And definately don't eat them, yuck!
I think a pic is required as well: http://cricket.biol.sc.edu/usc-roach-cam.html
Then again, maybe it's best not to look at that before lunch. But I already lost my breakfast, so now it's on you all.

PETA is doing a total TOMKAT over the roach eating promo....I heard a story on the local "All News, All the Time" AM station yesterday.
Sheesh...it's a roach. Why can't it ever be a bacon eating promo?!?!
Posted by: Bornafan | September 26, 2006 10:48 AM
I would totally eat a roach to cut in some lines... The problem is, I'm guessing the kind of folks that head to the Great America attraction in Chicago are probably not the type that worry too much about what they eat. Slap some butter on that baby and it'll slide right down your throat. So you get throngs of mid-west roach eaters all cutting in front of eachother at the park that night. Good call Great America.
Gardner, Rod works but I prefer Fity-Fity.
Posted by: Dorf | September 26, 2006 11:00 AM
Slow day huh? Gardner, Rod was bad. Worst in last 20 years? I think not. He's not even the worst WR we've drafted in the 20 years. Just ask Stephen Davis.
Worst in the last 20 years? (Not counting billionaires with Napoleon complex') i'll go with Albert Connell. Stealing from teammates lockers is pretty bad.
AM to the sticks brings up a good point too. How I hate Peter King. Monk got the team what they needed.
Posted by: Skinz | September 26, 2006 11:12 AM
Westrbook and Connell were awful like drag racing movies. But I hated Gardner, Rod so much worse. That dude had something so much more sinister about him. Do you remember a few years ago when we were losing (under spurrier) and there were reports of cell phones going off in meetings, people laughing after losses and such? A buddy of mine works for the Redskins and he told me in no uncertain terms that it was Gardner, Rod pretty much exclusively.
He mistreated the staff and the other players hated him.
Here is my equation:
Laughing when we lose + the drops + his atrocious treatment of others (See JLC's 'park my sh#* bit@&' story)= my least favorite Redskin ever.
Art Monk not being in the hall is as absurd to me as communism.

Jason you didn't fact check in your article today. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?
Posted by: Barno | September 26, 2006 11:36 AM
Sorry, forgot one point. I have an unbridled disdain for Peter King. There are basically 4 GMs that will talk to him and he loves those dudes unconditionally. Can you imagine if the Redskins had done what NY did in acquiring emanning.com? Traded away phil Rivers and several picks, passed on Roethlesberger, and lost out on the chance to draft Shawn Merriman. He would have ripped us to shreds but because it was Accorsi in NY, it was a great move.
Same thing with the NE group, they can do no wrong. Just letting players go that won for them. At a certain point, you have to pay somebody but King won't ever call them out. I cannot stand that dude.
Posted by: ArtMonkToTheSticks | September 26, 2006 11:36 AM
Gardner, Rod sounds like he was a pretty bad dude. I love the valet story, that's called Karma, brah.
My all time Hater list has to be led by Deion, Neon. Especially for cashing in on us after he was washed up and doing absolutely nothing for us on the field. AND after having his best years in TEX-ASS.
Art Monk To The Sticks has mad game, JLC needs to find a job for that dude. He was on it yesterday.
Posted by: Pulldownclaw | September 26, 2006 11:49 AM
Good points on Gardner, Rod.
You said 4. I use the 3 + 1 with Petey. The third (although by shear man crush factor only second to Peoli.) Is Bruce Allen in Tampa and Gruden. Read his week 2 article where he claimed how he wouldn't want to be Atlanta going into Tampa b/c Gruden will have them ready to play. Yeah that didn't turn out so well
I thought he was gonna put one hand under the table on Sunday Night and rough up the suspect right there on tv, when he proclaimed "I just spoke with Bruce Allen and he assured me that Simms is not in a life threatening situation but won't announce his condition until he speaks with Phil (Simms) which is of course understandable."
The +1 is (Insert feel good team here). This week no doubt it's got to be New Orleans. He will heap praise on players, coaches and front office types.
Posted by: Skinz | September 26, 2006 11:53 AM
Good morning all. JLC you got my vote on Gardner, Rod. JL, how do you think Brunell will do on Sunday? Maybe we will get lucky and someone will hit that arm.
Posted by: jm220 | September 26, 2006 11:53 AM
Skinz: where do you watch games? I want to roll by there, not say a word, give you a high five-to-chest-bump, and walk out with my pointer finger raised like I just won the US Open.
Also, your use of 'roughing up the suspect' is just mint. I have so many terms like these that I am actually not allowed in several states. Incredible call on his Tampa love as well. I shall adopt the 3+1 theory and explain that a tight dude from JLC's blog dropped that knowledge.
Out.

Monk: I, too, have a disdain for Peter King. He's awful. Always hating on the Redskins, it seems. I also dislike Bill Clement for his unnecessary and questionable hatred of the Capitals.
I wonder if anyone here would eat the cockroach.

I try not to hate anyone. So no, I do not hate Peter King.
Hate is maybe too soft a word for the emotion I am searching for.
Peter King and his boy, Zimmerman, are the sole reason Art is not in the Hall.
I have had to cancel my reservations for Canton in August for each of the last five years. Fortunately, I only had to cancel my subscription to Sports Illustrated once.
With hardly anyone else eligible this year, it will be interesting to hear their excuses. Since they have to induct three, I certainly feel this will be the year. However, it sickens me to think that this is the criteria it will take to get him his due.
Posted by: Art Monk HOF 2007 | September 26, 2006 12:39 PM
Amen on Gardner, Rod. That's a keeper. From the way I hear it, the other sportswriters who vote for the HOF need to grow some serious stones. None of them (other than Wilbon) seem to question Peter the Great when he disses Art Monk at the yearly discussion table. What a joke! I'm so sad that I'm an alumnus of Ohio U like that clown! Art Monk, HOF 2007
Posted by: Gardner, Rod-hater | September 26, 2006 12:43 PM
Howard has a clause in his contract that says he must have at least one botch in each article he writes about the Skins.
Also, JLC, you mistakenly wrote that the last Gibbs team to amass 500 yards was in January 1991. It was actually in January, 1992.

I would maybe eat a hissing cockroach to save on the $35 parking fee at FedEx Field...
Posted by: Art Monk HOF 2007 | September 26, 2006 12:49 PM
Hey there, roughing the subject - one of my favorite euphemisms.
As for JC - to me, he is a rookie. And I think that appears in my article and not Howard's.
JC has spent 0 days on an NFL active gameday roster. He has never officially dressed for a game.
He's been on the 53-man roster for an entire season, yes, but if you went back and asked Mark Brunell about what he considered his first NFL season, for example, he wouldn't talk about '93 - designated as the third QB for 15 games, would he? In terms of the CBA, sure he gets a year service time with respect to his pension and all, but I think in all practical respects until you even dress for a game it's hard to consider some one a veteran of something.
Any opinions?
Shall we go for a manlaw/peoplelaw/bloglaw here? Are you with me?
Posted by: Jason La Canfora | September 26, 2006 12:51 PM
dallas scored 17 on your Jags, and they are no powerhouse on offense. You had one big defensive game against an ailing Rothelsburger. Get over it and get ready...

Hopefully our defense wakes up this weekend. Grilliams gets so worked up the sidelines he's gonna start running out there and making the tackles himself at some point.
If the Jags defense can't stop Portis they'd better hope they can outscore us. With Portis running on them, the dink&duck(oops, I mean dunk) stuff will work and we'll have way more than 17 points. If not, it's going to be a long day filled with quackers.
Posted by: Megskin | September 26, 2006 1:13 PM
Jags D is stout. 17 points would probably win us the game but it will be tough to get that many points.
I think we will have a hard time running and that could lead to pressure on Brunell. We all know what happens then. Brunell starts getting happy feet and patting the ball looking like he's auditioning for the lead role in Flashdance.
To the Sticks,
This week it's Bailey's again. If they lose it will be somewhere else in two weeks. What can I say i'm superstitous. I do my part.
If we are losing no chest bumps please. My Balance gets worse as the game turns bad for the skins.
Posted by: Skinz | September 26, 2006 1:13 PM
Come on La Canfora,
People point out your mistakes in articles, and all you do is a) make up excuses and b) ignore them.
Campbell is not a rookie and the Redskins did not have 500 yards against Atlanta in January, 1991.
A veteran journalist would: a) Admit the mistakes B) apologize for the errors and C)write a correction in your next article.

Jags,
Your D is good. Very good. Maybe best in the league. Your O is sorry. It's not good at all. It's ranked lower than the skins O and that's bad.
Also please remember that each time someone uses a bunch of caps god kills a kitten. Save the kittens.
Posted by: Skinz | September 26, 2006 1:44 PM
Jags,
I think you HAVE a keyboard board PROBLEM where you caps LOCK gets stuck. Also, Carr/Moulds/JOHNSON has been more productive than Leftwich/Williams/Jones, so I'm unpersuaded and missing your point, esp. to suggest that that has ANYTHING to do with Art Monk not being in the Hall OF Fame.
On the JLC poll, I concur in a blogrule about referring to Gardner, Rod (and also would accept Gardner, Roach).
My random Tuesday thought is about how it seems MORE teams so far this season, not just the Skins, are using the dink/dunk/get the first down passing game (i.e., more than has been reported in the media) as an offensive play calling strategy/response to bigger cornerbacks and faster outside linebackers. It also seems like teams have been more effective (at least in highlight film) at the end around option and the "naked" option. My two cents.

I heart the fact that every week, a member of the enemy camp strolls in with his awkward verbage and gets yelled at by our band of merry persons.
We are from the capital of the nation, nay, the free world. You live in the 6th coolest city in one of the 5 worst states in the union. Seriously. We would like to cut you all loose but now it is awkward because Bobby Bowden lives there and he is a swell guy.
You have a nice squad this year but you will continue to be assigned the job of holding Peyton Manning's laundry until further notice. Thanks for stopping by.

Just becuase it looks like your 2 year old son is mashing the keyboard while you guzzle keystone light with Earl, 'Zeke, and Harvey, doesn't mean you don't have valid points. It is merely the fact that you don't have valid points which makes us wish you didn't get to vote.
Enjoy your 10 win season and playoff exit and always remember that awkward green colored pride. Recall with fondness all of the Hall of Famers that have run out from the tunnels of "Generic Sponsorship Stadium Name" in the heart of horrendously designed urban sprawl known as Jacksonville (or jackson-vul if you sound like JAGS).

I really hate the whole making fun of grammar thing but your comments on "grammer" just made me spit up water on my keyboard.
Also you wanted to compare Del Rio and Gibbs.
1st year as a head coach:
Del Rio 5-11
Gibbs 8-8
2nd year as a head coach:
Del Rio 9-7
Gibbs: Wait for it....Wait for it.....Superbowl Champions!
3rd year as a head coach:
Del Rio 12-4 Loses in first round of playoffs
Gibbs: Loses in the Superbowl and begins my long time dislike of the Oakland Raiders.
So there you have it. Be careful what you wish for.

Jags, you are starting to sound like a real TomKat ... maybe a TomJag. If you really want to taunt Skins fans, it would be much more effective if you laid into the Skins for their penalties. You are wrong about the Redskins; they do not suck. They had good chances to beat both Minnesota and Dallas, but lost MOSTLY due to penalties taking away the big plays that shift momentum. Jacksonville is right in the middle of the league on penalties (not quite like the #1 penalized team, the Redskins, but not the most disciplined either). But you have to get off denying the Skins credit for beating the Texans. The Texans' QB/WR combo is just better than the Jaguars. Statistical fact. Jaguars just have a very good defense (much better than Houston). But now Clinton Portis is back. He sets the tone for beating very good defenses. Time to take your finger off the CAPS button and relax. This will be a long season ... with all your CAPS, you might blow a TomKat vessel.

I'm a little scared about the Jags WRs with the problem we've been having in the secondary... cough cough ARCHULETA cough cough. Jason, any chance someone asked (or will ask) gDubbs about that?
Len Pasquafatass is the worst Redskins hater of them all. I read a great story about Len posted by Art, one of the guys who runs extremeskins.com. It was an exchange between him and Len P in the press box.
As a matter of fact, if I remember correctly, he claimed that Jason might have witnessed this exchange. Jason or Cindy, can I repost this story to get Jason's repsonse? Is this fair game?

Jags v. Skins matchup:
I think the jags WR's 6'6, 6'4, 6'4 will create matchup problems with our secondary all day, unless springs is healthy. Their rush defense is amazing, however, Portis is the x-factor. If he can somehow get something out of nothing it could be a good day for us. We all know how bad the skins offense is when we can't run the ball, enough said. Leftwich can pick apart an offense if he isn't pressured... so to the d-line: "Now is the time to put the first 3 games behind you and get after the QB!!! Oh, and the Jags O-line is going to be a tough test, one of the best in the league. Skins win this game if we get 3+ sacks, it's that simple. It's going to be a physical battle just like the Jags v. Pit game on monday night. An interception by S. Taylor seals the deal and the Redskins D-line shines:
13-10 Skins
p.s. Gadner, Rod (a.k.a. mangled hands) should not be on an nfl roster until the doctors surgically repair his hands.

Jags, actually those were spelling corrections, not grammar corrections--which you still don't have down.
A grammar correction is more of telling you where you should put your periods and commas, neither of which you seem to use correctly. Let's fix it some, OK?
HEY DORF,I THINK SNOW WHITE IS LOOKING FOR YOU.
See the period there? It helps to complete a thought, especially since this whole mess isn't a correct sentence in the first place.
LOVE THE GRAMMER CORRECTIONS,
Once again, this is grammatically incorrect. It should be "I love the grammar corrections.", or were you using the implied "I" and just trying to be stylistic? Somehow, I think not.
NO RESPONSE TO JOEY HAVING 200 MILL IN PLAYER PAYROLL,AND NOT BEING ABLE TO COACH THEM UP..HAS BEEN!!
How about: "You guys still haven't responded to my comment about the Redskins having a 200 million dollar payroll." And "Joe Gibbs is a has been."
See? Looks a lot better, doesn't it? Fortunately for you I'm not actually a grammar nazi, because I'm sure there's quite a bit I missed.
Anyways, most of us don't respond to anything you have to say since you show a complete lack of netiquette by keeping your capslock on. Netiquette is a hard word, I know; I'll leave it as an exercise for you to look up.

Hey there, saw the mention of the Len P confrontation. I was there. It was after the Tampa/Skins playoff game in Jan. Len is a real grouch, who tends to over-react is some of these situations, but in this case I would have to side with him. The Redskins have credentialed people from a message board, who, on their way out of the press box, start to make comments to Len and antogonize him while he is trying to do his job and writing on deadline.
This is our office, where we earn a living, and to mess with someone in that situation is way over the line. Len was at that stadium for probably 5 hours at least, and these guys pick the fight 2 hrs after the game while we are all trying to make deadline. It became a distraction for everyone around them.
I'm not sure too many pro sports organizations would in essence sanction that kind of behavior, but in this case the Redskins did. Did Len get way too fired up? Yes. Should he probably have just ignored it? yes. But it is also something he should have to worry about in a pro sports press box.
Thats my two pence, anyway/

Well you really had us going JAGS. Good thing you took the caps off and typed in less broken English, we were really going into a tailspin there. All is right in the universe and no more baby kittens will die because of your tactical ruse.
JLC, thanks for responding to a "previous" blog comment board thingy (JAGS is going to go TOMKAT on that one) I was wondering if you checked backed entries or just plowed on through the comments and never looked back. Good form.
Deadskin: I predict next week's BOOF/TEXANFAN/JAGS will be TIKI#1.

Sheesh, Jason, are you actually worried about my behavior? I mean, how many mother effers do you drop in the press box, loud enough to carry several rows and sections?
Are you seriously suggesting that behavior is overly professional? You know me and you know I've never gotten engaged with anyone in the room in a confrontation or negative fashion. I'm very light hearted and polite to you and everyone you've ever seen me engaged with, even Len, who I couldn't GET to be quiet about it and had to keep telling HIM we didn't need to get into it there.
Heck, I seem to recall Michael Wilbon suggesting HE would confront Len next time he saw him in the press box and Len wrote on ESPN that it didn't happen. I think it's amusing you stick together, but, I suspect Michael Wilbon would endorse the kind of behavior he said he would engage in. Don't you :).

Wow... Art... great story, and Jason thanks for the response.
I wonder if it's as far skewed to either side as you both state (although, other than the way it started you two seem pretty much in agreeance on the rest of it). Even if it's somewhere in the middle, I still think Len had some pretty hateful things to say, and seemed very much out of line.
Does anyone know where his (seemingly) irrational hatred of the Skins comes from?
Posted by: Bucktown Skins Fan | September 27, 2006 10:35 AM
It's widely assumed his hatred of the Skins manifested when Pete Prisco was given the scoop on Gibbs returning, instead of Lenny. I don't think Skins fans thought much of Lenny until that classless hit piece he wrote on Gibbs a few days after his return was announced.
And for the record, he loves Gregg Williams. So much that he practically campaigns for him to get a head coaching gig somewhere else every year. He just hates everything Gibbs and Skins Front Office.

Interesting. I have noticed recently that he hasn't been taking any unwarranted and/or out of context shots at the Skins in his articles. It used to be that he could find a way to work a Redskins lowblow into an article about curling.
Has it only been since the second coming of Gibbs that he's been doing this? I thought it dated back before that, but I honestly don't know why I think that.

I'm not sure if it predates Gibbs' return. I know I had no clue who the guy was before that column. Apparently, he had a pretty close relationship with Cerrato before it, and took it personal that he didn't get the call when Gibbs signed back up. Who knows though? All I know is he's a sad man whose ego easily surpasses what little journalistic integrity he may have.

Lenny Pastabelly is a moron and obviously has a grudge against the Skins, but picking on the guy in the pressbox? That's pretty low. The Skins org should be embarrassed. Fans don't belong in the pressbox. But then again doesn't Danny love to hate on the media too? He probably put them up to this.

Well, according to the "fans who picked on him", it was one quick, light-hearted comment that set Lenny off, something most people would've ignored or just laughed off. Jason makes it out like they were verbally berating Lenny, but I don't buy it. I've read enough of Art's, and some of the other mods at Extremeskins', stuff to know that, while they certainly don't like the guy, they're above picking a fight with him in the pressbox.
And Art may not have gone to journalism school, but he knows as much, if not more, about football than most national football writers I've read. I wouldn't put him on Jaws' level, but he's certainly better than any of the fools who write for espn.com or si.com. But yes, he is a fan. If you want to read an intelligent analysis of the team, from a fan (but not a homer), then check out his stuff on extremeskins.

extremecrap is what that site should be called. art is a buffoon and so are his other cronies.

"But it is also something he should have to worry about in a pro sports press box."
Should Patrick Ramsey and his neighbors have to worry about reporters stalking him outside his home?
Give me a break...

Hey there. Just checking back on this blog and saw these last few posts. Art, you don't start an altercation after a game when people - like everyone one row down from you - are trying to make deadline.
You know better and I used to think you were smarter than that.
This has nothing to do with sticking up for Len. He does stupid things and have had one conversation with him my whole life, he carries himself with a poor disposition, and like I said, he over reacted.
But that wasn't the time or the place. Find someplace else to try to drum up support your site, and be man enough to admit you've acked like a complete jackass numerous times on the road - taking pictures behind people's back, making lewd gestures on the Texas Stasium turf last season, cheering like a moron during that game. It's a shame you feel the need to act that way, yet everyone else I have ever encoutered from your site is a joy to have around, whether Redskins Park or in the press box.

Skinsfan. I was ordered to go to Patrick's house on that occasion, and it's hardly something that never happens to athletes or entertainers. I'm not saying it's great and I went on this occasion against my wishs, but it's soemthing every reporter has probably had to do at one time or another.
The team made no one available to address whether or not Patrick asked for a trade after being demoted situation early last season, and I was ordered to go to his house for comment.
I called everyone the team's PR staff to tell them of my orders, try to avert this in any way, and to see if they wanted to get a statement from him or the organization or find a way to contact Patrick and have me meet someplace else or talk on the phone. They produced nothing.
I also went up to as many of Patrick's neighbors as possible to tell them who I was and why I was there, I parked in an abandoned lot out of the way and waited as long I was ordered to.
I bought a magazine subscription from a kind in the neighborhood, sat in my car for several hours and went home.
Anything else you want to know? That's why I'm here.
