The Singapore Skins

I've been emailing a lot with this dude Doug, a hardcore Skins fan living in Singapore, and going to great lengths to watch them live (not going to find too many Skins bars in those parts). He watches the games he can with other ex-pats, and spent between 6-9 in the morning the other day watching the Skins lose on some ESPN International feed. For some other games, he has a buddy with some kind of rigged TIVO who can pick up games.

Here's his explanation, sent before the Monday night opener:

"You're looking at a solid 12 hour difference. I'm not totally clear on the TIVO, I can ask him more when he gets back (Sept. 11 here, about a full day before the game). From what I understand he broadcasts the information from his mom's Pittsburgh cable box into his computer via the internet. The cable box is hooked up with a digital recorder, (TIVO or something not sure) so he can tape the preseason games off NFL network. He's a Steelers fan, so the Towels are his first priority, but he's good people and willing to help hook me up.
He gets local Pitt stations however, so outside of the opener, I may be screwed.
We're all set to wake up ass early for the Minn. opener. Starts at 7:30 a.m. here. We'll watch that on international ESPN. Me, the guy who lives there (Rob, Steeler man), another American from Ohio (Not bigNFL guy, but Bengals if he had to pick) and my Singaporean GF (a Liverpool fan who has taken to the 'skins quickly enough to know who Buck Ortega is. She also understands the franchise tag. She's awesome).
I can email Rob today about some more details on the TIVO.
GIANTS ARE CHEATERS!
Doug

Doug says he has access to a VCR, so anyone who still has one and can tape games and mail them to Singapore would be helping him out a lot. Shoot a comment and I'll get you in touch with him, or just put something on the blog here and I'm sure Doug will see it.

Rob needs to hook up with someone that has a Slinbox: http://www.slingmedia.com/slingbox/

He would need someone here in the US to buy one of these devices. Then Rob could access the game via the internet on a PC in Singapore. Basically the device will take your TV signal and broadcast it on the internet.

Look at that. Just mere minutes and someone already has the system figured out. I'm just happy I can work my ipod. Got to figure out how to post those fancy links like Steinberg, where you click on words and it brings up the story.
if I didn't have this dang football team to cover I might have time to catch up on my technical issues.

a bit of a lesson about html. html has tags, tags are surronded by brackets. However, as this comment will probably interpret that, I'll use [ ] instead (replace with when using in real life).

Now the tag you care about is the "anchor" or [a] tag (remember replace the ).

now basically all you have to do is

[a href="link_you_want_them_to_go_to"]Text You want them to see[/a]

for example

[a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/"]Jason's Fabulous Employers[/a].

thats it. Now, the washingtonpost blog software might be a little stupid, but you can try that.

hmm, wondering why my updated comment didn't show.

anyways you need to replace the square brackets '[' and ']' with the point ones (shift-, and shift-. as it wont let me have a post w/ them.

Wrong parser type interpretting

Or you can just find someone with Tivo in the Washington area who has the Tivo on their home network and do the same thing that the Pittsburgh person is doing.

If you can get me details on what is being done, I can do this.

Not much in the way of "Skins bars" there, but plenty of "Skin bars".

According to a press release this week, Yahoo! Sports and the NFL will stream games to viewers outside the US for about 10 bucks per game. CHeck it out and see if they have the system setup yet.

The Yahoo! and NFL deal is fantastic. I can't wait to try it out. Unfortunately, it's available for international users only. I would LOVE for an international reader to try it out and report back to all of us.

Slingbox is good, not great. Tried it last season and the performance was lame. I live in Sydney every November and December, and the Slingbox was a disappointment for me.

The Yahoo! deal is what I've been waiting for. I wish I could get it as an add-on to my DirecTV service so that I could watch the 'Skins when I'm traveling domestically.

If this newfangled technology doesn't work, I still have one of them there VCR machines and can tape then mail/ship via fedex or ups.

What is a VCR?

Posted by: P Diddy | September 13, 2006 3:33 PM

Old school, I'm with you. I figured the old batamax was the way to go.
Skin bars; thought about writing that line myself, then figured I'd live such fertile ground for the comments.
html teacher - I'll try that out. Sounds easy enough but I'll still probably screw it up.

Slingbox is incredible. I'm in NYC now, and I'm watching all the Skins game from my parents' house in DC.

The quality isn't perfect, but it sure as hell beats watching the Giants and Jets every weekend.

NFL Game Pass is the way to go:
http://sports.yahoo.com/nflgamepass

I'm stuck in England right now, so outside of monday night games and a few select sunday afternoon games a year, I won't get to see the Skins.

Game Pass is what your friend in Singapore needs. You can watch all the games live for an entire season for $250. The only thing that sucks about is that you can't purchase single games. I only want to watch the Skins, and I would pay $5-10 a game if it was possible. As it is I'll be buying the entire season.

Yacine, what is the quality like?

As silly as it sounds (maybe not so silly to die-hard 'Skins fans), my lone barrier to relocating permanently to Sydney is being able to watch the NFL.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 13, 2006 7:40 PM

The Yahoo thing can be bought per week at $25. You can see it live and anytime up to 24 hours after the game. If you remember last year's Giants game it sounds pretty pricey. Shut out and out $25. For $25 you can get Larry "the homer" and the two old men on NFL.com field pass for the whole season. Or you can also listen to the other team's equally obnoxious homers.

Posted by: bangkokben | September 14, 2006 10:09 AM

I'll be buying it this week-end (didn't have to last week as the monday night game is on tv). I'll let you know on Monday. The demo video looks decent...not tv quality, but not so bad that you can't make out the player's numbers.

Listening to the game is such step down from watching it. It would drive me nuts knowing that I could have bought the video feed.

It also bothers me that I used to be able to get all the radio feeds free a couple years ago, but not anymore. I guess that's the way it goes with our new pay-per-view NFL.
