T.O.
I'm not sure any of us can be certain about what happened here, but I don't see this being a "publicity stunt." I don't think anyone wants that kind of attention, not even TO. He has long struck me as someone who is probably dealing with some childhood/depression issues - I'm not a shrink but I play one on this blog - and for all of his accomplishments, I felt like he lacked an inner confidence that might manifest itself by acting out.
Regardless, I like to joke around as much as - if not more than - the average bear, but I don't think this is a matter to take lightly. I'm not cool with suicide jokes. If it turns out days or weeks from now that this was some kind of elaborate ploy, then let's revisit it then. But right now, with the information so shady,, I think it's premature to ridicule this man for something that could be a most serious problem.
Anyway, that's my take on it at least as far as the blog. I just feel like there has to be a line somewhere. Not saying we can't discuss it, but I think it would be unfair to take a bunch of cheap shots at the guy this morning. Seem fair enough?

Well I promise not to take any cheap shots at TO. I agree attempted suicide is not something to take lightly. However, philly fans have never pulled any punches in the past (booing santa clause at halftime) - So, if I were T.O.'s consultant I would suggest he doesn't show up in Philly for the game next week. I have a feeling Philly is going to eat this up.

Well put, JLC...
I think this is a tragic event that should transcend all sports rivalries/hatreds. If this is all what it seems (a suicide attempt) then he needs some serious help. Mental and emotional issues, like Depression, are very serious. If he has been suffering from a disease like Depression, then it would actually help explain a lot of his behavior in the past.
I think he deserves our support if he is truly suffering. I have never been a fan of TO in the NFL, but this is serious. I hope he does everything in his power to try to get better as a person.

Max brings up a great point. TO's going to take a beating up at Stinkin' Financial Field.

It's kind of sad that first thing that popped into my head after reading about TO was that this better not be some marketing ploy. Emailed my friend to find out if I was going to Hell for thinking that and he said the thought had crossed his mind too. Looks like it got to JLC too. This is too serious of a subject for someone to fake, and it sucks that we've come to expect TO to do such outlandish things that the thought even enters our minds.

Right now, football is such a secondary thing, when it comes to TO, I hope, and Pray that he's able to come back to full health, and that he get the psychological help that he needs. How truly tragic, that his thought process was such that he thought that killing himself, would be a better option, than continuing to live.

I really hope this whole thing is a stunt/fabrication/lie on someones part. I'd rather that be the case than him actually trying to kill himself. I can't stand TO's antics, but that doesn't mean I'd ever wish anything truly bad to happen to him. Suicide is never funny.

Does this mean we will have to hear more and more about this clown? All you guys to is report about this poor excuse for a human.I'm sick of TO!
Posted by: RedskinMike | September 27, 2006 1:18 PM
Absolutely agreed. This is no laughing matter. If the attempt is true, then the man needs help, and I hope he finds it.

RedskinMike I don't think anyone is making an excuse for his antics. But we all are looking at the human side of it. Take football out of the picture. He is a human being that is in need of help.

The most surprising thing about this whole incident is that people are so surprised. Hasn't it been clear, at least in the last year or two, that TO has, at the very least, a severe personality disorder? At least now maybe people will begin to understand what's going on in his head, and hopefully he'll get some of the help he so desperately needs. If Drew Rosenhaus is really looking out for his client's interests, and not his own, there will be no spin on this, and TO will be put into some kind of program. The man should not only miss the next game, he might have to go away for a long time to deal with his demons. TO's talent is only surpassed by his insecurity, and all of his behavior, starting with the Dallas Star thing, has been a manifestation of his mental problems.

TO get a shrink get on some anti depressants like the rest of us.didnt Deion Sanders also attempt suicide at a point in his career. They are under immense pressure seems like he has lost his outlet dont take ur life TO I want to see you get hit in person at FED EX when the cowgirls come here.

RedEd, I guess we shouldn't be surprised, but I still am. I'm going to go ahead and guess that people who are friends with TO may not be all that surprised(they might have seen this one coming for a long time). He definitely needs to take a break for awhile and get some help; who cares if he ever plays again, his life is more important than football.

I'm heartened to see the compassion people are displaying for TO. Good people on this blog...good people.

"I have a feeling Philly is going to eat this up."
Max, Philly fans CHEERED when Michael Irvin got carted off of Vet Stadium and seemed to be paralyzed. Methinks TO's return to Philly is going give ugly a whole new name, and not in a good way.

TO loves attention, any attention. As long as you're talking about him, even if you're dissing him, it's all good to him. And he's portrayed himself as a joke, so might as well treat him like one.

Definitely fair enough. Reading the various news reports and the lengths to which he appeared to be going to end his life is tragic. Forgetting the fact that he has immense football talent, at the end of the day he is still a person.
Not that I want this to become any kind of love-fest for TO, but there is one good thought I had of him: When he was with the Niners and he scored a TD in Dallas and then ran out to stand on the star in the middle of the field was a truly sublime moment in the collective crusade to defile the Cowgirl Nation. Loved it.
