Over Unders
Having a rough morning and pressed for time, so I apologize for the late posting. Wanted to see what you guys thought about the game plan this weekend, so thought we'd play a game of Over-Under.
It goes like this. I throw out a scenario, ask for your opinion and we see what the consensus is. Here goes:
Number of carries for Dolla Bill. (26 is the magic number based on his Redskins career).
Number of plays for TJ Duckett (don't see how this can be set at anything other than zero at this point).
Number of plays for Troy Vincent (my gut tells me he will dress for this one).
Number of sacks for Andre Carter (please be gentle. he is trying).
Number of sub-40-yard punts for Frosty.
Number of total sacks and turnovers caused by the D. (I would go with 2 given recent events).
Number of TD passes for Peyton Manning (I'm putting a cap at single-digit numbers).
Number of wins for Redskins season (I would guess Vegas would put this around 7 at this point).
Randoms: Speaking of over-unders, I thought it would take until the bye week for the Redskins to have a sponsor for the new TV/radio studio they built at The Park. Boy, was I wrong. The good people at Sprint had their logo attached to the studio a few weeks back. Anyone else hear the commercial for Redskins.com that is actually sponsored by the Yellow Pages? I swear I heard it driving to the stadium Sunday. About 15 seconds into the 30-second spot, Larry Michael says that this Redskins.com commercial is brought to you by the Verizon Yellow Pages, then does like a 15 second spiel got them. Genius. A commercial within a commercial. Whodathunkit? Maybe we could find a sponsor for this blog. I'll gladly take a handout. I'm fully prepared to sellout ...
Our guy Wayne Allyn Root was on the ball. He told me last week he would be playing big against the Bears coming off all those blowout wins. Bet he made a pretty penny Monday night ...Believe it or not, there was some baking going on in the media room Monday. The esteemed representative of the AP showed up with a bunch of pans, and put the finishing touches on a cake he was making for his son's Boy Scout meeting that night. It was mostly some last-minute frosting from what we gathered. He's supposed to bring in some cookies Thursday, so I'll give a full review. A few weeks ago he surprised us with a key lime pie that was pretty tasty.

Number of carries for Dolla Bill.
35. Gibbs always overdoes it the week after he underdoes it.
Number of plays for TJ Duckett.
0
Number of plays for Troy Vincent (my gut tells me he will dress for this one).
15.
Number of sacks for Andre Carter (please be gentle. he is trying).

Number of sub-40-yard punts for Frosty.
3.
Number of total sacks and turnovers caused by the D. (I would go with 2 given recent events).
3.
Number of TD passes for Peyton Manning.
3. Redskins can't stop the run, so look for a few rushing TDs.
Number of wins for Redskins season (I would guess Vegas would put this around 7 at this point).
7. Skins will rebound. But thats not enough .

With a heavy heart, I'll take the under on Sheriff Gonna Getcha. Unless the philosophy changes this week, he'll probably get 20 carries.
The Colts don't put up all those passing yards because they get sacked by Andre Carter. Whatever the number is, take the under.
With the trade deadline past and no hope of Denver giving us a trade-back for our 3rd, I bet Duckett finally sees some action. I'll give him 4 carries.
Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | October 17, 2006 12:26 PM
Dolla Bill Carries: Under. Every bit of common sense in me says it has to be but this coaching staff continues to astound me with this. Also going down big against the Colts will force throws.
T.J. Duckett-Under. Healthy Scratch. With Vincent an unknown commodity and so many hurt starters trying to come back no room for a 4th running back.
Vincent- 16 plays. Lot's of Nickel. Not alot of Nickel CB's.
Andre Carter....never heard of him. Is he he tackling dummy # 99 or 57 that opposing RB's have to run around in practice on Sundays?
Frost- 2. I'd like to say 0 but since your post wasn't "Sour-brawn sighting" I guess he's back.
Sacks/turnerover- Depends if you count 80 yard bombs to WR's and then they kick off to our offense a turnover then 9 (solely because you said single digit). Under-if you mean fumbles/interceptions (insert broken thumb joke here) then ST is good for 1.
Payton Manning TD passes- Under-why would you throw the ball? See tackling dummies comment above.

Amen Haikuman/Iimerickman. I have a theory... I know baseball and football don't really translate well analogy-wise... but hear me out. Alex Rodriguez is hated in New York. He had an off year and played better than most people play their whole careers. But the media was getting to him and the fans were pining for his departure. If AROD would have blown his top (maybe not Ryan Leaf style, but you know... ) cussed out some camera men, called out a few teammates by name and screamed out all the negative things he's been suppressing all year, he may have turned his season around by the end just by venting. That may have lit a fire under some players, inspired others, and cleared the air most of all. But AROD stayed silent and in his silence, killed the locker room and the dugout.
Heres where it comes back to football. The Redskins do NOT need grumbling and anarchy in the lockerroom/sidelines. But I could see them benefitting from some choice words and calling out specific name from key players and perhaps a coach or two.
Another cross-sport example. Miracle is an amazing movie. Coach Herb knew how to get his guys going. Joe Gibbs should watch that half-time speech he gives to "get his guys going" calling one of the guys a "candy-arse" and questioning their effort. Also, I recommend Mighty Ducks 2 to Mr. Gibbs where Coach Bombay gets some perspective and remembers how to get his players to win. Screw game films this week. We know the Colts are good. We know Pmanning.net is going to pick apart the called in defensive schemes. We know the Colts run D is suspect. Bring the guys in and watch some inspiring movies. Heck, bring in Jerry Brockheimer to make a movie. Just figure something out to get our boys in burgundy to believe. Oh yeah, and RUN THE BALL!

Number of carries for Dolla Bill. 17
Number of plays for TJ Duckett 0. What a waste. He probably won't be active as they probably bring an extra DB for the Colts O.
Number of plays for Troy Vincent I'll go with 12 plays, he will get in on dime and maybe a few nickle packages. He a lot better then Ren and Stimpy (Rumph & Wright).
Number of sacks for Andre Carter 0. Manning gets rid of the ball to quickly. Hmmmm I still do not see why people always are still point at him, he did have a sack this past week, has 2 for the year and has been improving as the season goes on.
Number of sub-40-yard punts for Frosty. This is bull ^&($. A sub 40 yard punt doesn't always equal a bad punt. One has to take into account field position and not out kicking ones coverage. So I'll go with 2 Punts inside the 20 for Frost. ; )
Number of total sacks and turnovers caused by the D. 2
Number of TD passes for Peyton Manning 3
Number of wins for Redskins season 6-10

Dorf's on to something. Do you think we can hire Bruckheimer? I heard we need an Assistant Head Coach/Cinematography Coordinator.
You know what they say, you can't have enough cooks in the kitchen. Or something like that.
Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | October 17, 2006 12:43 PM
CP gets over 20 carries. He IS the offense.
TJ gets no carries because #45 will get them if the play calls for a 285lb recking ball.
Troy, aka TV, plays at least 3/4 of game-- maybe corner , maybe safety.
Andre gets 1 sack.
Frosty kicks all over 40. I'm thinkin' dome action can't hurt here.
Total sacks - 2, plus one turnover.
Rocky Top throws 3 td's.
9 wins for season.
Late.

Dolla Bill -- Over (we seem to like to overreact to the previous game's mistakes)
TJ -- spot on, zero plays (I think he gets traded to the Niners today, maybe we can get back that draft pick we sent them for Lloyd)
TV -- over 10 plays, we need the help
Carter -- zero sacks. Come on. Manning gets rid of the ball way too quickly.
Frosty -- 2 sub 40 yrd punts
Sacks/TOs by the D -- 3 all TOs, maybe a pick but probably fumbles or muffed punts or something
Peyton TD passes -- 2, Addai or Rhodes will have a career day if our D plays like this week
Skins wins this season -- Fewer than the Broncos

Players vent all the time. None of us (including Jason) get to be in the locker room to hear it. It's a family, and a closed one, and if it ever gets to a point where we do find out about venting or what have you, St. Joe would be displeased. That's not his style, nor is it the style of the teams he puts together.
Make fun of St. Joe all you want, but this is the reason he gets his "character" guys. No one else believes in you, the whole town is down on you, your neighbors ask you stupid questions, etc. This happens to every contender at some point in the year, often even at multiple points in a game. The "character" guys on the team are the ones that can pull the team out of the funk. They close ranks and help the team re-focus.
It's fun to vent about Brunell vs. Campbell, or Andre Carter, or Adam Archuleta. We get to do it because we're fans and we don't block, tackle, pass, or catch.
On the team, it's different. Just because we want St. Joe to erupt at a press conference or a player to come out and light a fire under his teammates for our amusement, doesn't mean that's the right thing.
This is St. Joe's team, and his hand-picked players. They will do it their way, and at the end of the year we'll see what the results turn out to be.
To thine ownself be true, and all that jazz.

Number of carries for Dolla Bill.
18 - You don't run the ball while chasing a lead.
Number of plays for TJ Duckett.
0 - see above. He might not even dress.
Number of plays for Troy Vincent
12 - Colts shouldn't give us many nickel opportunities.
Number of sacks for Andre Carter
0 - No brainer.
Number of sub-40-yard punts for Frosty.
2 - This will probably generate more action on the over side.
Number of total sacks and turnovers caused by the D. (I would go with 2 given recent events).
3 - Don't know if the Redskins can generate turnovers but maybe on sacks? Under three sacks and turnovers combined a game is incredibly mediocre. Even Houston and Oakland average over 2 TO + Sacks per game. The Redskins? 2.67 per game. Yikes.
Number of TD passes for Peyton Manning.
2 - I don't think they'll need to pass to score, though our defense does stiffen up after they've allowed the opposing team to march the length of the field. Most of the time this involves 2 or 3 rollover efforts on third down. Oh well.
Number of wins for Redskins season (I would guess Vegas would put this around 7 at this point).
6 - Not seeing 5 more wins, especially against Carolina, Atlanta, Dallas, Philly, and NYG at home and Indy, Philly, St. Louis, and New Orleans on the road. Even the Tampa Bay game looks like less of a lock now.

Just because we want St. Joe to erupt
He did it once a long time ago; I believe it was against Dallas during half-time. The team was so shocked they came out fired up for the second half and won.
Don't remember any other details other than that.
Posted by: Megskin | October 17, 2006 12:50 PM
Dolla Bill - Over
TJ - Over
Vincent - 10 - 15 plays
Carter - 0
Frosty - 50/50
D - Under
Manning - 1
Skins Wins - 9

P Diddy,
I feel you but where are these "character guys" these "core redskins" when we can't beat the Titan's at home? Where are they in practice getting everyone ready to play against Minnesota?
This team, had it come out even moderately ready to play, could and should be 4-2. I don't care about Dallas and Gmen. Fine we got our butts whooped. But someone is to blame for Titan's and Minn. We should have whiped the floor with them.

It's just frustrating, because all the way up to the end we had our chances," Brunell said. "We had about a minute left and we didn't have any timeouts, but enough time certainly to get in field goal range. But that's a foolish throw. I just put it up there and they got the interception and that was it. It was a tough day."
Are you kidding me?

From Wilbon. This is really sad.
Even here at the Monday night game between the Cardinals and Bears, players from both teams and personnel people from various NFL teams would see somebody from Washington and invariably ask, "What was that yesterday against Tennessee?"

"We had a tough day. That's football.
I just have to not listen to the Boos and pay attention to the other team. They really seem to like it when I'm under center. I appreciated that the Titans really cheered for me after the game last week. Those guys are true competitors."

Number of times a player says they'll have to go back to practice and work harder on their "technique" during the bye week after they lose by 21 points Sunday: 107. Seriously, I've never heard so many players on a team talk like coaches. "Well, if my left foot is 3 degrees to the inside of the right shoulder of the tight end, I might not be able to stop him from running the skinny post. I'll have to watch more film and work harder on my technique." These guys are SO OVER COACHED. Just line up and hit somebody. RUN THE @#$%^&* BALL BETWEEN THE TACKLES!!!!!!!!!

Draft picks! Who needs draft picks?
How silly is it, from the standpoint of building a team, to give up a third-round pick for Duckett and not use him? A third-round pick isn't a throwaway; it should yield a starter in the NFL. Lance Briggs, the Bears' starting linebacker, was selected in the third round. Olin Kreutz, perhaps the best center in the NFL, was selected in the third round. Perhaps you've heard of a certain Terrell Owens, wide receiver, Cowboys? Third-round pick. Trading a third-round pick for Duckett, even if it was to keep him away from the Eagles, hurts the team in the future very clearly.

P Diddy: great post bruh. Very insightful.
Dolla Bill: under 26 but still a good number as we try to run despite being down
Duckett: naught point naught
TV: to quote grilliams: 'He'll be in some packages'
Carter will get one sack where he had nothing to do with the initial play and pmanning.net will fall near him a la Dana Stubblefield circa 2000.
Dfrost.edu will have 3 punts under 40. We forget that he occasionally kicks bombs to trick us into thinking we have an NFL punter and then he plays the 'shank prank' on us. Good times.
pmanning.net will throw 3 TD passes. There will be a rushing TD in the mix as I'm playing a dude who has Addai in fantasy and that is just the sort of shabingus that could happen.
Wins? Have you all seen or schedule? Brutal. My bet is that we rally and come out fighting and run out of steam. 6-10. I just threw up in my own mouth for writing that.

Megskin - Best idea of the day!! I was thinking that yesterday. He only weighs like 265 lbs. That is tooo small for a DE in today's NFL. Offensive tackles weigh well over 300 lbs now a days.
Maybe the 49ers were on to something.....

Over-under:
Jason Campbell is moved up to second-string in year 5. In year 10 training camp, he is moved up to starter. He then retires.
Posted by: disappointed | October 17, 2006 1:24 PM
Can I just hit Peter King with one forearm shot?
... But wait! Mark Brunell, down 25-22 to the Titans, throws a bomb up the left side intended for -- who else? -- Santana Moss, and it's picked. Two kneel-downs and Vince Young prances off the field with his first NFL win. The 0-5 Titans, hopeless, hapless, have beaten the great Gibbs in the House That Snyder Built.
Posted by: jm220 | October 17, 2006 1:25 PM
Dolemite Jenkins = 30 carries and 150 yards
Duckett - 5 carries (red zone carries and 1 for a score
'Ol man Vincent - nickel packages, etc = 16 plays
Andrea Carter - nothing for this lady this game.
Frost. one shank for 22 net yards
2 sacks, no fumbles
PManning has 4 passing tds easy
4 wins for the skins this season and that is a stretch with the team we have seen the past 2 weeks = no heart.

JCL I think the Dark Side of The Force should be it. You will all be joining me in a couple of weeks. After a couple more weeks of Brunell going 5-for-16performance in the second half. The team sitting at 4-7 and Coach Joe still going with Brunell.

I'm wearing my rose-colored J-Lo Portis sunglasses:
Coach Janky Spanky takes over the offense and installs the Texas Wishbone. Portis totes the rock for 194 yards on 27 carries.
TV plays in nickle situations and breaks up a potential TD pass in the 1st quarter that gets intercepted by The Grim Reaper who returns it 99 yards for a TD.
#99 finds his inner Dexter Manley and takes Mustache down 2 times.
Frosty earns a game ball by booming back-to-back-to-back 55 yarders in the second half.
Mustache tosses 2 TDs and 2 INTs.
Dr. Jekyl rolls in this one, 31-24, propelling the Skins to 6 straight wins and an 11-5 record.
Alright, back to realty.

PDiddy, I hear you and I appreciate that we are arguing over wins and losses and not DUIs and criminal charges (holding my breath for the grim reaper) so yeah, there is something to be said about character... but if you go back to Mighty Ducks, coach Bombay had to unleash the bash brothers from time to time to get the team going. Tides turned, momentum shifted, games were won. That's all I'm saying... I don't want turmoil in Dannyland, just saying they could benefit from a blow up. It killed me to see Mike Seller's interview sunday night. He looked broken spirited... Mike Sellers, one of the hardest hustlers on the team. We need some fire, not shrugging shoulders is all. Nothing but love Pdiddy.

Number of carries for Dolla Bill. (26 is the magic number based on his Redskins career).
Under, but close - 25
Number of plays for TJ Duckett (don't see how this can be set at anything other than zero at this point).

Number of plays for Troy Vincent (my gut tells me he will dress for this one).
15-20 plays (Can't be any worse than Kenny Wright)
Number of sacks for Andre Carter (please be gentle. he is trying).
1 - He tackles Brunell on the sideline.
Number of sub-40-yard punts for Frosty.
0 - He always follows a horrible game with a good game.
Number of total sacks and turnovers caused by the D. (I would go with 2 given recent events).
1 - Peyton is always good for about one TO a game among the 5 to 6 TDs
Number of TD passes for Peyton Manning (I'm putting a cap at single-digit numbers).
5 for Manning. 1 for Sorgi
Number of wins for Redskins season (I would guess Vegas would put this around 7 at this point).
16...if you count losses as wins. 5...if you don't

Whats the over-under on the number of years it will take Skins fans to realize that this is Dan Snyder's personal fantasy football team and he doesn't give a darn about you? 5 more years?
Do you like paying $25 to park, $100 to sit, and 4 hours of your day to watch them lose to the Titans? Do you like sitting behind pillars? Is that something you would be interested in? Are you having fun while Snyder tarnishes coach gibbs legacy? Does it feel good when he attempts to charge you for walking across the street into the stadium? Don't forget about Snyders dirt.
Why is it that Jim Mora Jr, Sean Payton, Eric Mangini, Lovie Smith, Marvin Lewis, John Fox, Jack Del Rio, and Marty Shottenheimer can come in and either IMMEDIATELY make an impact or become a serious contender in three years and we are 2-4 in year three?

Dolla Bill: Under. I agree can't run well playing from behind.
Duckett: 0
Troy: 10 plays and he gets burnt on three of them.
Andre: 1 sack but gets called back for defensive holding.
Skins record: We regress to 6-10 and trade our first round pick for a conerback.

Why does everyone hate Brunell so much? I'm not asking this critically because I hate him, too. Did this all start with him coming in to steal Ramsey's spot (a guy that everyone liked)? Or is it just because the guy's a boner.

They are supposed to lose. We are just cursed for the moment.

Folks,
I just like to make money. The bigger the name is, the more money I make. I don't care that a Ryan Clark and an Antonio Pierce are well-liked and productive, hard-working players. I like the fact that you would rather by an Archuleta or a Carter jersey. I like the fact that I can sell you on potential, not on results. And that's the bottom line.
Love,
Dan

Number of carries for Dolla Bill. (26 is the magic number based on his Redskins career).
Under. I say 15. We're going to have enough 3-and-outs that Head Deity and Associate Deity - Offense will rely on the unheralded and invisible 'passing game' they're rumored to possess.
Number of plays for TJ Duckett:
Under - they're going to write TJ an I.O.U. One Run, Signed, Love & Kisses, Head Deity. Maybe they're creating a staff position for 'Official Associate Paperweight, Offense'?
Number of plays for Troy Vincent (my gut tells me he will dress for this one).
0. This defensive scheme has successfully confused a good portion of the secondary, Warrick Holdmann, and Adam Archuleta, our RRROLB (Really, Really, Really Outside LB), so it must be a brainful. I think Troy will need a week or two. Until then, it'll be more of Two-Wrongs and SpeedBumph. Besides, it'll probably take about a week to get Troy's wood-burning boiler up to full steam, anyway, he's got to be rusty....
Number of sacks for Andre Carter (please be gentle. he is trying).
1. Most likely from the buffeting of air cause by him blowing by Peyton as he's blocked around him.
Number of sub-40-yard punts for Frosty.
1.
Number of total sacks and turnovers caused by the D. (I would go with 2 given recent events).
2.
Number of TD passes for Peyton Manning (I'm putting a cap at single-digit numbers).
I'll say 3.
Number of wins for Redskins season (I would guess Vegas would put this around 7 at this point).
5 - and that's being generous. We really don't have any 'soft' teams coming up in the near future.
Posted by: FlimFlam | October 17, 2006 1:52 PM
I like Kyle's thinking ...
Number of screen passes or draws the Offense uses = 20.
Number of time sacks giving up by our porous front line = 4.
Number of times Lloyd and Randle El are wide open across the middle or deep and Brunell either forces the ball to Moss or checks down -- 25
Number of times the PManning offense runs left = 30.
Number of Skin penalties called = 11.
Number of missed tackles by our secondary = 55.
Posted by: X.Hog | October 17, 2006 1:52 PM
Frost needs to go so the number can be zero
dolla needs to pound, pound pound so the colts stay off the field, but we won't... so I say 20
Turnovers? Peyton is always good for a few...
Sacks? 2
Andre? 0
The other over under... 6-10
The one not mentioned... Campbell is a bust so it does not matter if we play him or not.

What you think? TJ for a draft pick.
Lions coach Rod Marinelli said Monday that Shawn Bryson probably will require knee surgery and the team might have to sign another running back.
Posted by: Anonymous | October 17, 2006 1:54 PM
Number of carries for Dolla Bill.
29.
Number of plays for TJ Duckett.
7. Hit 'em hard.
Number of plays for Troy Vincent (my gut tells me he will dress for this one).
25.
Number of sacks for Andre Carter (please be gentle. he is trying).
2.
Number of sub-40-yard punts for Frosty.
0 - he'll be indoors.
Number of total sacks and turnovers caused by the D. (I would go with 2 given recent events).
4.
Number of TD passes for Peyton Manning.
3 - I hope to Stokely, for fanasty points.
Number of wins for Redskins season (I would guess Vegas would put this around 7 at this point).
9.

Number of plays for Troy Vincent (my gut tells me he will dress for this one). 25% of D snaps
Number of sacks for Andre Carter (please be gentle. he is trying). .5
Number of sub-40-yard punts for Frosty. All of them
Number of total sacks and turnovers caused by the D. (I would go with 2 given recent events). 3

Dear Fans,
Mark really isn't executing the offense the way Al prefers it. To be honest, he leaves about 5 big plays on the field each half. I don't think he's seeing the field very well. It may be a height issue. Defenses are blitzing fairly relentlessly, and I don't think Mark is seeing the hot read. Trent Green is 6'3" and Kurt Warner is 6'2.5". Mark is barely 6'. This could be an issue. He holds the ball too long. The pass against Jacksonville where Santana took it 55 yards: that's what this offense is designed to do. Cooley should be dominating too.
The playcalling has been adjusted because Mark can't see what Al wants him to see, and that's why you're seeing the dink and dunk. Coach Gibbs needs to make a change if we are going to turnaround the season.
Sincerely,
Todd

I bet you all didn't know that Joe Gibbs owns a parrot. And this parrot swears like an old salt, I mean he's a pistol. He can swear for five minutes straight without repeating himself. Trouble is, as we all know, Joe is a quiet, conservative type, and the bird's foul mouth is driving him nuts.
One day, it just gets to be too much and St. Joe grabs the bird by the throat, shakes him really hard, and yells, "QUIT IT!" But this just makes the bird mad and he swears more than ever.
Then Coach Joe gets angry and says, "OK for you," and locks the bird in a kitchen cabinet. This really aggravates the bird and he claws and scratches, and when Joe finally lets him out, the bird cuts loose with a stream of vulgarities that would make a sailor blush.
At that point, Joe is so mad that he throws the bird into the freezer. For the first few seconds there is a terrible din. The bird kicks and claws and thrashes. Then it suddenly gets very quiet. At first Joe just waits, but then he starts to think that the bird may be hurt.
After a couple of minutes of silence, he's so worried that he opens up the freezer door. The bird meekly climbs onto Joe's outstretched arm and says, "Awfully sorry about the trouble I gave you. I'll do my best to improve my vocabulary from now on." Joe is astounded and amazed at the transformation that has come over the parrot. Then the parrot says, "By the way, what did the CHICKEN DO?"
Maybe a lesson here .... ?

Doesn't this feel like the week prior to that Dallas game on Monday night last year? Everybody's questioning the direction of the organization, Gibbs's competence, Brunell's ability, etc.
It seemed like Gibbs and Brunell's reputations were completely on the line heading into that game. The 2004 season was misery, and the payoff was expected in that game or else. If they lost, it was going to be ugly when they returned to DC.
They then went down and won a game nobody expected them to win (the Cowboys had just handled the Chargers in San Diego, and people were making a big deal about the Cowboys having won 14 of the last 15 meetings or whatever) and it set the tone for the rest of that season.
That game was also the last before their bye week, just like this one.
This time, if you include the preseason, it feels like they've practically had another 2004 type season and the payoff is once again expected or else.
Maybe I'm crazy, but it just has that same feeling to me.

Posted by: JT | October 17, 2006 2:15 PM
I don't feel like playing the over under game, but something occurred to me that the even the Brunell haters have not mentioned. The problem with a 700 page play book and all the shifting designed to "confuse" the defenses is that the defenses never get confused. Brunell NEVER throws across the field. Unless its a screen, he either rolls left and throws left (90% of non-screen passes) or drops straight back and passes to the middle (remaining 10%). Opposing secondaries rarely have to cover the right side of the field.
Posted by: dcsween | October 17, 2006 2:16 PM
Dolla Bill - (20) because we can't run when playing from behind.
TJ - (4 tackles, 2 sacks) as a replacement for W. Holdman at OLB.
T. Vincent - (2 plays) he doesn't know the defensive schemes yet.
McCintosh - (0 plays) because he is a rookie, and we don't play rookies.
Carter - (1 sack) And you will think he just won the superbowl.
Frosty - Is he still with the team?
D sacks/turnovers (maybe one if Indy has a fumbled exchange)
Peyton TD's - (5) Could be more if he's not taken out of the game in the fourth quarter to rest.
Skins wins - (somewhere between 2 and 10) This team is too unpredictable to even speculate on how many wins they might have.
Posted by: Max | October 17, 2006 2:19 PM
Boyerrrrrrrrrrr -
I could count the ways, but my work day would be over. But to sum, why I dislike Brunell:
1. His running - it combines the awkward stiffness of Harrison Ford in yet another action movie best suited for someone 20-30 years his junior, the gallumphing wallow of William "The Fridge" Perry, and all the velocity of Wilford Brimley saying the word "diabetes". And that's just in a straight line.
2. His throwing - His habit of throwing off-foot and without planting would work if your last name is 'Young' or 'Vick'. But it isn't. QUAAAACK.
3. His timing - In a posession offense, one relies on solid running and quick passing in order to keep the ball and eat up the clock. By keeping the ball one minute shy of forever, you keep an aging / inconsistent defense off the field, and well-rested so they don't go dead-duck on you later in the game. Mind you, I said quick passing. Hauling back out of the pocket, scrambling towards a sideline, and then looking for a receiver downfield is not 'being a quick passer'. It means 'checkdown' - presuming you can get the ball that far....
If he stopped trying to be a football hero, stayed in the pocket, and worked to get the ball out of his hands quickly, he'd be servicable. He hasn't, though. It's been 2004 all over again, and this time, he can't fault having bum knees.

Man, am I the only redskins fan who doesn't hate his team and want to complain about everything at the moment? We have 4 losses so far and Joe Gibbs is our head coach, things could be a lot worse! Would you rather be in Detroit or Cleveland? It seems from reading this blog like maybe the answer is yes, then people could complain even more! Get over it and show some support for the team. Quit ripping every new free agent when they don't live up to everyone's over-the-top expectation, guess what, Andre Carter is NOT the problem!

Posted by: Kevin P. | October 17, 2006 2:31 PM
With all the speed on defense in the NFL today QB's have to be mobile or at least have a quick release. Brunell "WAS" mobile at one time, and Brunell "DOESN'T" have a quick release (He actually has to wind up to get it down field). Campbell "IS" mobile right now and "DOES" have a very quick release!! Adjust to the new NFL Gibbs!! Joe Theismann and Mark Rypien couldn't even get it done in this NFL. Too many LB's and DL running 4.4 - 4.6 fortys these days - and it seems like everybody is taking a page out of buddy ryan's playbook and blitzing the hell out of QB's. Hence the evolution to the mobile QB!! It's a new NFL joe!!
Posted by: Max | October 17, 2006 2:33 PM
Exactly Kevin. If we had more than one first day pick left then I might by the expectation thing. But we have continuosly mortgaged the future both in draft picks and cap room in order to win now. Well it's now and we aint winning.
Posted by: Skinz | October 17, 2006 2:34 PM
the last fan,
I'm starting to realize that even Gibbs can't solve the Redskins problems. Perhaps we need an NFL strike by the players and Gibbs can bring in scrubs and win the superbowl like he did in the past!!
Posted by: Max | October 17, 2006 2:35 PM
Marty ball,
Man, it really looks like "Marty Ball" can work when given the chance!! Just look at San Diego right now. We never really gave Shotty a chance here in Washington. If we didn't change coaches every 1-3 years maybe there would be some stability in the program. Gibbs probably won't be here long enough to see the result of draft picks, therefore he is trying to rush this team to the superbowl using free agents. We will be the ones stuck here without draft picks when Gibbs leaves us again to attend to his race car.
Posted by: Max | October 17, 2006 2:40 PM
Even if we win now we have a bunch of guys just leaving their prime or past it, which puts us in the position year after year to fill holes. Build the young players and save the cap!!! I believe that redskin fans are intelligent enough to accept that and would appreciate long term champs not here today gone tomorrow.

Posted by: Megskin | October 17, 2006 2:43 PM
OK, I know what I'm talking about? I mean, I've played football for years, I've coached it for years, too. I know good tackling technique and good body technique when I see it.
And so I stand in awe of some of the Chinese little ancient women who muscle their way into and out of crowded buses. Not only is their timing impeccable, they show all the brutality and ruthlessness you'd hope for in an NFL game. They may be diminutive, they may not possess the sheer bulk of an offensive front lineman - but they could teach the tackles a thing or two about body position and technique when the ball is snapped. They can get you right under the ribs, from the most unexpected angles, sending you reeling, wondering what hit you. They can headbutt you in the elbow, elbow you in the knees. They can slip from behind you, through the door and away in the time it takes you to lift a foot to step through the door. They move with such speed, skill and deadly aggression that it's a wonder the CIA hasn't recruited all of them to be covert assassins. Perhaps they have.
And it's not just on buses. In a throng of people visiting a night market this summer, who were bumping off the citizenry right and left? You guessed it - Chinese little ancient women (CLAW's). Impassively, with only the slightest wrinkling of the brow to belie the concentration needed to inflict the most accidental injury, they would - "bulldoze" is too large and clumsy a word - incise their way like little scalpels through the crowd. And with their lethally hard shoes, no toes were safe.
Even when visiting a museum exhibition, with lots of people milling around the main exhibits, I was agog as the throng of CLAW's elbowed me aside and kicked my heels and calves. It was amazing. With great aplomb, and completely ignoring the existence of anyone else, the CLAW's went blithely along, colliding with one another with the regularity and lack of emotion of fairground dodgems. It was like human pinball, ancient bodies careening off each other in all directions. Of course, this substantially increased the likelihood of being battered.
The difference, in this instance, from being ribbed by a CLAW stepping off a bus, was that there were dozens of them, all moving in different directions. Walking the length of a single museum room was like doing Niagara in a barrel - but without the protection of the barrel. A nudge here, a knee there, a cranium to the funny bone. NO matter how much I dodged and hopped, sidestepped and swerved, I couldn't avoid continual impact. I reached the far end of the room, bruised and disoriented, thinking seriously of abandoning the whole exhibition and going to find an emergency ward somewhere pounds).
What's my point? Well, I figure, with the Redskin's Dirtbags performing so poorly, that such talent should be harnessed in some way. Maybe 'The Danny' should send 'The Vinny' on a scouting mission ... thoughts?

Boyerrrrrrrrrrr,
I, for one, do not hate Brunell - partially because I am a woman and have a soft heart for a stand up guy - and partially because he is not the reason we are losing - at least not entirely. Our D is missing...that is the biggest concern of mine. The back up QB is always the one everyone calls for.....Campbell may or may not be good but he is still a rookie. However, since it looks like our season is over, we probably should put him in to see if he can be the answer for NEXT season (crying as I write this).
Posted by: Lisa | October 17, 2006 2:47 PM
Last Fan,
Folks are complaining because the 'Skins are their passion, their football love. They complain and boo because they care.
It doesn't mean they (or I) know enough about football to be right, but it does mean that they (and I) care. I find the play-by-play and player dissection to be comical, personally. But we're fans and we have a right to complain. And we complain because we expect the team to win.
And, frankly, I'm with you. So long as Joe Jackson Gibbs is prowling the sidelines, I will have faith. The Norv, Marty, Ol' Ball Coach years were painful, to say the least. Back then, we were resigned to losing week in and week out. I'm extraordinarily grateful to have my childhood hero back, and, yeah, it does mean that I expect them to win now that he's here.
Football is a team sport. Anyone who has played on a sports team knows that it's rarely one guy (or girl) who lets the team down. It's almost invariably a team win or a team loss. It's not Brunell, Carter, Archuleta, Saunders, Gregg Williams, or any individual. It's all of them. Apart from "The" Rock Cartwright and Mike Sellers, who had a kick ass game on Sunday?
Besides, you could sense that it was a dull, listless game from the opening kickoff.

Posted by: Megskin | October 17, 2006 2:48 PM
the last fan,
i do agree with you to a certain extent, but andre carter is the problem, at least a big part of it. he was brought in to rush the passer, therefore help the secondary. if you have seen any of the games you should know how that is working.
Posted by: tmac | October 17, 2006 2:49 PM
Hey there. following up here.
Yes, there was actually baking/cooking going on in the media room. I am not alluding to any sort of illegal activity here. It's a true story.
They liked Buchanon and tried to trade for him a few years back. He really has struggled, and I think it might take a while for him to learn the system and get up to speed. Overhauling the entire secondary on the fly is tough.
Grilliams loves Clements, I'm monitoring it but not sure they could pull it off before the deadline.
Shoot, there was something else I was supposed to answer. Oh well, forgot it.
I'll check back later.
Posted by: Jason La Canfora | October 17, 2006 2:50 PM
I agree. Put Campbell in and let him gain a rapport with the players. Brunell's history with the skins shows he gets worse as the season goes not better. We went 5-0 at the end last year, but that was more from Portis. Campbell can hand off to Portis.
Posted by: Kevin P. | October 17, 2006 2:52 PM
It's not Brunell, Carter, Archuleta, Saunders, Gregg Williams, or any individual. It's all of them.
So you're saying we should push them all over Niagara Falls without a barrel? Or perhaps just replace them with CLAWs? I'm confused.

We could send him to Asia in search of said CLAWs. Mayhap he doesn't come back--swallowed up by a sea of biting, kicking, scratching, knuckle-punching, groin-gouging Chinese little ancient women.

it really isn't snyder's fault. i mean it is but it's the FOOTBALL people who're surrounding him. where did vinny come from anyway? (SF?) and he tends to listen to the media. here i'll chronicle snyderdome:
1. snyder retains norv gives him a chance
2. snyder listens to sonny jergensun and gets "leadership is overrated" to upgrade at QB position (instead of brad johnson).
3. snyder fires sonny's son after that doesn't work out.
4. snyder fires norv in mid-season
5. marty criticizes snyder on espn calls him control freak
6. snyder hires marty and gives up all control over to marty
7. snyder, during a charity press conference was asked about the 0-5 start and response was "you guys told me to be hands off, now i'm hands off..."
8. snyder fires marties, tries to retain the DC because lavar liked marty's brother
9. snyder with the help of pepper hires ball coach, spurrier (the most decent human being i've ever come across in the media), and with him marvin lewis
10. snyder begins to see it's not working with spurrier
11. spurrier being the decent person he is did something that st. joe or marty would never do...he left the 15 mil of 25 mil on the table.
12. shamelessly snyder took it and gave it to st. joe
13. and what goes around comes around danny
14. snyder gives up total control over to st. joe
15. meanwhile the falcons are giving up draft picks for tampa's available GM
16. we're stuck with joe as the GM for another 2 years at least.
good morning, good afternoon good night! see you guys in 2009.

PEYTON - SCARY AND COULD GET UGLY but THANK GAWD NOT PLAYING THE DUDE IN FANTASY THAT HAS PEYTON.
SKINS WINS - WE ALREADY MAXED OUT...
SKINS ARE HORRIBLE AND HAVE NO PRIDE... AT LEAST BE NASTY AND PHYSICAL... OR STOP TALKIN BOUT WHAT THEY NEED TO DO, AND JUST DO IT. DO SOMETHING. SOMETHING POSITIVE. MAKE PLAYS... HAVE SOME FOOTBALL MENACE, OR IDENTITY...

Man, it really looks like "Marty Ball" can work when given the chance!!
Does he have total control out there in San Diego like he did here? I wasn't all that impressed with him bringing in a plethora of family members to coach everything.
-----
He doesn't. In fact, Marty and GM AJ Smith are at odds. Both are, however, operating under a "Make the playoffs or get lost" edict from ownership. And AJ Smith is finding tremendous talent via the draft (Merriman, Rivers, McNeil, Gates, etc.) as opposed to Snyder and Vinny's mountain of free agent/draft trade screw-ups.

Ok the Marty Ball thing was was a little over-the-top, but his record with the skins wasn't much different than Gibbs II and we sent him packing. This is an excerpt from the Jan. 7, 2002 washington post when the redskins rebounded from 0-5 under shottenheimer to finish 2nd in the NFC East at 8-8... See Marty wasn't so bad. The skins went 8-3 after a miserable 0-5 start. Maybe there will be a similar article written this year about the skins:
The weather was dreary. The stands were emptying rapidly. There was practically nothing at stake. But the Washington Redskins once more refused to quit, finishing their disappointing season on a positive note by rallying with two second-half touchdowns to beat the Arizona Cardinals, 20-17, yesterday at FedEx Field.
Tailback Stephen Davis rushed for 148 yards -- giving him a single-season team rushing record with 1,432 yards -- on a career-high 38 carries as the Redskins, for a second straight year, secured a .500 season at 8-8 with a closing triumph at home over Arizona. They finished in second place in the NFC East.
Free agent David Boston agreed to a seven-year contract with San Diego. (Post File Photo)

this whole team is bad, from top to bottom.from coach to mgr to owner!!all except owner is overrated(everyone outside dc know hes an idiot)marty ball had this team going in a better direction than any coach since 91.selective memorys on this blog.this team has to be blown up and rebuilt through the draft.blow up scouting dept as well, talent evaluation on this team is terrible.hard pill to swallow but only one, skins have never rebuilt this team with young players.and let them grow together..look forward to burning that secondary on sun!!!!!!!!

what are the odds that we could trade some of the big-name burnouts (or even big-name stars that still have something left in them but just can't seem to play for the Skins, as so often seems to be the case) and get some friggin' draft picks for this coming draft.
I can't wait until 2008 just to maybe, maybe, hopefully have three picks on the first day of the draft.
so, yes, agreed that Jason should try to throw his voice police academy style and repeatedly, loudly, say "draft picks" at the next press conference. maybe just two or three times.
Posted by: Helmfish | October 17, 2006 3:21 PM
LIVELY today. I see some spark. Per Jason, I would be PSYCHED if they could trade for Nate Clements! (but doubt he could get on the field this weekend like Vincent). I'm guessing there would be some arrevaderci (sp?) pressure on Jimoh and Rumph with that move. Who would go? Duckett? No. Maybe Patten? To tell you the truth, Carlos Rogers has not impressed as much as he should have in his second year. I'm just saying.
Now what I need to know is how quickly these little Chinese women can pick up the Grilliams' version of the Cover 2 defense.

The skins currently are a joke.
What is the point of Over and Under. they just CANNOT make plays. U gotta make plays. A Block, a Throw, a Catch, and every othet little thing that has to do in WINNING. Do you honestly see in the near future, that they will win against the teams that are coming up? And Losing, JUST LIKE winning, is contagious. The team is full of losers at the moment. and some of them need to either make plays or GO. Unless they turn this around, people are gonna AT LEAST have some kinda fun, in pointing to the OBVIOUS. At this rate, NO reason to believe OVER AND UNDER estimates are gonna get any more carries for CP. WHO CARES about a sack that a DE makes when the team is losing? i will take NO SACKS from Andre carter if the skins win. If Vincent was the answer, Why the heck did Buff release him? FROST is TOO inconsistent in CRUCIAL situations. DUCKETT... wow... duckett... How many wins? LET's WORK ON THE NEXT ONE instead of for the season. cause they way they lost to MIN at home on MONDAY NIGHT, and to TEN this past weekend. i am seriously NOT seing ANY MORE W's from the skins this year. And DEF? I don't care if they get NO TO's or SACKS. CAN THEY STOP A 3rd DOWN????? U TELL ME THAT MEGSKIN. I AM STILL A FAN. i luv the skins, i will never have another team that i root for, but don't pretend like they are something other than what they showed us the past 6 weeks... so sorry for making jokes bout the whole thing. i would rather be joking bout a winning season and positive things. there are none and don't seem to be on the horizon. ONLY thing i have faith in, is the fact that, i will always be a skins fan, and that Joe Gibbs will SOMEHOW make it respectable. But man, if Brunell does not go... i think my jokes above will become sincerity. He has to be the single most NON-PLAY MAKING player on the team. anyway. So Go Skins. it's okay u don't make playoffs. we will still be ur fans...
Here.
CP - My favorite player and my #1 draft pick in my FANTASY DRAFT even tho people passed him up because of shoulder. UNDER 26 cause the coaches for some frustrating reason, don't want to run him.
DUCKETT - wow... no, i won't comment on this poor poor decision.
TV - OVER. IF SOMETHING POSITIVE HAPPENS, PLEASE KEEP HIM IN THERE.
CARTER - 0 but hopefully he can play well and help the team win
FROSTY - STILL LEADS THE LEAGUE IN # of PUNTS.
DEF - DEF? WHAT DEF?
Peyton Manning - 4 - 5 TD's he won't be playing football. he will be playing Catch with Reggie wayne and Harrison. and numerous others on the Indy Team.
Wins this year - ALREADY MAXED OUT. my feeling is, if u cannot come through on Monday nighter opening night at home vs MINN (i was there) and vs TENN. (0 - 5), we don't need to worry bout this number, we need to worry bout which team they can seriously beat? we should be saying, how many games till they win their next game.
'BOOFER'

What was JAson talkin about referring to baking? It was too hot in there or something?
Jason - Who are we going to be trading for?
We are only 2-4 (Eagles - 4-2 with 2 games still to be played against them). I know most of you guys are joking about this weekend, but (starting tommorow of course) we need to back these guys. Give them one more chance. If we win this one, we will be in good position to take the East.

Here is the irony. The skins stink becuase the fans love them so much they don't have to win in order to make money. 99% of the above bloggers drink the kool-aid and endorse The Danny's poor strategies. Only when fans of this team stop rooting will the danny have the incentive to behave differently. If you give your child money and he buys toys, breaks them, and then asks for more money do you keep giving them money?
Yes i hired Norv, but you see what Norv did in Miami and is doing in the Bay. He's a great offensive mind, just not a good head coach. Notice i didn't fire Norv, just like i would not have fired Marty after finishing 8-3... or Spurrier after 7-9 with George Edwards as the D Coordinator.

Posted by: Skins Fan | October 17, 2006 3:43 PM
Jack,
If you would have kept Spurrier then good riddance to you. Spurrier was horrible because his feeling was you don't have to work hard to win. That guy was the laughing stock of the league and an embarrassment to the Franchise.
We went from "once proud champions to a lesson in moppishness."
Marty I agree with to a certain extent but he always tightens up in close game in my opinion and while he instilled much needed discipline tactically he was bad.
The problem is no GM. Owners/fans/media judge GM's on a longer arc than coaches and therefore they can afford to think long-term.
What Danny has created is a win now and at all costs mentality. There isn't anyone who sits back and says "Wait a minute. This doesn't make any sense. If we can't beat the Eagles with T.J. Duckett then we aren't that good anyway this year."

Dear Redskins fans,
As I sit here in a city ravaged by poverty, mother nature, and lack of polotical leadership, I can't help but think what more I could have done to become part of your team. This summer I desperately wanted to play for a solid coach and someone who believed in me. I knew the Danny would be the perfect person to help me on both counts, so as I fought my "guts out" night and day recovering from my injury, I prayed 5 times a day in the direction of Redskins Park. I wasn't hung up on money or fame. I just wanted someone to appreciate the intensity, intelligence, and heart I showed in playing all-out for my team every week. I would have given my all to this team and helped take it to the playoffs for many years to come. I perfectly fit the meaning of "core Redskin", and yet Gibbs refused to even acknowledge my presence. I waited for so long just to receive an obligatory phone call, yet nothing.
Now I have no choice left but to play for a team that I wanted to avoid, for an owner intent on moving the team, and for a team with a history of failure. Oh how I wish the Danny or Gibbs had stepped up for me. . .Why couldn't they have traded a first round and third pick for me instead of a benchwarmer from Auburn?
Please trade for me!

I really blew it, guys, and I apologize. I wanted to have an intimidating secondary, so I picked up Archuleta. I didn't realize he's the slowest DB in the NFL and can't cover.
I wanted a speed end rusher, so I hand-picked Andre Carter. The reason I went after him instead of Darren Howard is because I wanted to get him in the draft when I was coaching in Buffalo. I should have looked at actual NFL results, not my memories of his performance at the scouting combine 6 years ago. I really overestimated my own schemes and thought that I turned Antonio Pierce and Ryan Clark into good players, when in fact they were good players. I drank my own Kool Aid. I hope we get a GM, because I suck at player evaluation.
Sincerely,
Gregg

Jack Kent Cook, normally we don't call out typos on this blog, but when you did it a second time, I thought you might want to know that Mr. Cooke used an "e" at the end of his name.
The missing over/under from Jason's original post is the game where Brunell sits down as starter. The pre-season Vegas book line was week 8 (which is kind of a duh, given that its a bye week and no one starts, but you get the idea).
The question is, which game would have been better for Jason to start? Indy or Dallas? Or can any game be a "best" one to start (other than in hindsight after we lose)?
Posted by: dcsween | October 17, 2006 3:51 PM
Ok - I may be bitter about the way this team is playing, but if shotty can go 8-3 after an 0-5 start, we still have hope with Gibbs at 2-4. If we beat the Eagles twice, we have a good shot at the NFC East. Although I bash the skins when they are playing bad, I still love them. I'm a die hard fan. I'd love to see them do well. It's our job as fans though to put some heat on coaches and players when they aren't performing well. Seems like this team only plays well when they are feeling that heat. So hopefully it helps!!
Posted by: Max | October 17, 2006 3:55 PM
They were my team in '77 when I didn't even know what football was. They were my team in '82, '83, '87 and '91 when they destroyed everyone (except the Raiders but we'll forget about that right now). They were my team in '93 when they were 3-13. They were my team with too many Dallas cast-offs playing and coaching. They were my team with a crappy new stadium. And again with a novice of an owner who charged to breathe FedEx air. With a college coach way in over his head, with a dictator egomaniac who cracks under pressure and with an outdated offense of a one-time NFL genius, they were still my squad. They will be my team with a 703 page playbook and an owner intent on building through FA. They will always be my team and anyone who doesn't want to stand beside me, well, go ahead and leave because you're taking up space for someone who will. 2-4 is not 2-14. And yes, the Kool-Aid tastes fine.

Number of carries for Dolla Bill - 22 in response to last weeks fan complaints they run while they are down 10 points in the 4th quarter.
Number of plays for TJ Duckett - 3; first third and less than 3 he is in, again to quell fan comments.
Number of plays for Troy Vincent - 65 percent of them. 15 years in and they bring him in week 7 to replace somebody. the question is who?
Number of sacks for Andre Carter - 1; thats not official stats but Fox commentator sacks that give him credit for being in the area. otherwise, .5
Number of sub-40-yard punts for Frosty - 2 i talking shank and touchback, or is this net, (if so all)
Number of total sacks and turnovers caused by the D - 2
Number of TD passes for Peyton Manning - 4
Number of wins for Redskins season - 6; gibbs refuses to resign, Snyder signs prime free agent QB, DB and RB. OL and DL are bolstered through waiver wire.
Number of Brunell Gopher balls - 4
Delay of Game - 2
number of times camera looks at Gibbs to make QB change - 3

Max,
Do you seriouly think we can beat the eagles twice? Wishful thinking at best.
Posse Redux, I understand your sorrow, I am skins fan if they are crappy or outstanding. Right now they are on the crappy side. In reality they havent been on the outstanding side in quite some time.
Going into a bye week at 2-5, facing the schedule we have for the remaining games is going to be hard. Right now I am just hoping to win any games. Where as at the beginning f the year I expected us to win games. I thought the Minnesota game was a fluke, we just didnt click. The Dallas game I gave up to rivalry and they just played us better at home. by the time the Jags game was over I "knew" we finally got our stuff together and the tide had turned. Then that nasty thing called reality called and laughed at me, Our defense gives up almost 800 total yards in the past two games, really was like a kick in the junk.
Then of course comes the broken record press conferences by Gibbs, we all know them and can almost recite his responses before they flow from his mouth.
We have yet to win a NFC game, so in order for us to even hope for a playoff game we need to pretty much start a run now.
Campbell should not start this week and I agree with Gibbs on that one point. Give Brunell his last shot against a playoff team in an environment that is must win and see what he can do. If we lose that one then Campbell should get his chance, and he will have 2 weeks to prepare for our next game vs Dallas. However even if we lose, I dont see gibbs playing campbell, instead he will say something corny like, "This is going to give Mark some much needed rest and we will se a different Brunell against dallas at home".
I didnt even have the heart today to do the over-under, although I did like some of the fill ins. And of course the Ancient Chinese women thing. From what I read though Vinny Cerratoenail would be afraid to approach these ladies.

Question:
We expect, hope, pray, etc. that Gibbs pulls the plug on Brunell and starts Campbell. But can somebody please explain to me why, 7 weeks into the season, Campbell has not progressed far enough with Saunders' offense to be named the #2 QB? I see 2 explanations and like neither of them:
(1) Campbell isn't that good and the coaches know it; OR
(2) Gibbs is pandering to Saunders' "hand-picked" QB, which is ridiculous if Campbell gives us the best chance to win should Brunell get injured.
It just seems to me that if Gibbs really thought that Campbell would give the team the best chance to win should Brunell continue to struggle, Campbell would be the #2 QB by now. The "Collins knows the system" BS shouldn't be a factor this late into the season. I'm afraid that, as with Ramsey, actions speak louder than words.

Give Brunell his last shot against a playoff team in an environment that is must win and see what he can do.
SEE WHAT HE CAN DO???????? mr. van winkle, do you want me to chronicle what he CAN DO?
we all KNOW what he CAN DO!!! the focus should be on what he CAN'T do. which is lead a team with an "iffy" defense to victories.
that 5-0 run came when our defense was a "championship caliber" (source: mike wilbon of washpost) defense. it's not anymore thanks to the idiots in the personnel department.

cmoney, i'm also one of those who thinks that campbell isn't that good (another gm mistake) and one of those that think that they'll select another QB in the draft. give up 2/3 more draft choices to get the pick du jour!
Posted by: dealer | October 17, 2006 4:28 PM
Ok I have read the post from people and really do some of you people even watch the games. Ok stop with the TJ Duckett stuff. Now that CP is playing it looks like a bad move but what if CP was hurt, then coach Gibbs is the greatest. All this talk of needing a GM is a load of bull. There are a number of teams in the NFL that are quite good that don't have a GM and to name one would be are arch rival Dallas. Players plain and simple need to produce. There is no gurantee that a first round pick is going to be a starter. Hell we have a had a number of busts in the first so cut that whining on that. Now for you real diehard fans, lets revisit the glory years. Those teams were not made up of high draft picks, they were free agents and low draft choices(ie the Hogs) Again players need to produce. I agree play Jason Campbell to see what he can do and I truly believe that he will be a good one. Mark Brunnel bless him but doesn't even scan the field, it's look for Santana and Cooley, might as well let Campbell do that. I'm sticking with them no matter what. I bleed burgandy and gold. We've been spoiled by the past but that's what it is the past. But I sure wouldn't want to be a Cardinals fan. Would you?

Dealer-
As far as that comment about seeing what Brunell can do, that is not my opinion. That is the only thing I can figure that GIbbs is thinking. If it was me, I would have had Campbell in already. JLC already posted an article about how the kicker(dont remember his name) bested John Hall this preseason but Gibbs stuck to Hall out of loyalty. In my delusional mind I am hoping that if Brunell blows this game Gibbs will finally have no other choice than to go with Campbell. God forbid Brunell has 2 td's and 1 int. and 190 yards. Gibbs will spin that into the second coming of Montana.

CMoney,
My theory on why Campbell is Number 3.
Its very simple.
QB #1- Mark Brunell = Joe Gibbs guy
QB #2- Todd Collins = Al Saunders guy
QB #3- Jason Campbell = Sh*t Outta Luck

Well Gibbs seems to think that Campbell could win some games for us right now, or that's at least what he said. Dealer, do you think Gibbs is lying to us??

Don Redskin,
Free Agency did not start until 1993. There was a limited free agency from 89-92 in which all "free agents" were not really free. Meaning that if their original team matched the offer they had to stay. These were not the glory years.
See this site, it gives you the history of free agency. Our glory years were before Modern free Agency.

Cerrato isn't the guy picking the players, he merely lets the coaches know who's available, and then the coaches decide whether we want to go get those players.

I'll chime in on the "do we need a GM" issue....
We do. And the reason is pretty simple. Coaches, as is expected, only care about winning the game in front of them. In fact, Gibbs said as much in his presser yesterday. He admitted that he doesn't look several games or several seasons down the road -- he just cares about winning the next game. And that is exactly what you want the head coach focusing on.
But you absolutely can not run the entire organization with that mindset. If you do, you end up devaluing draft picks -- "who cares about players that might contribute in 2 years, we can win now" -- and overpaying for free agents -- "these guys are the missing link, get them no matter what" -- (sound familiar). All because you just want to "win now."
On the other hand, GMs provide the steadying force in the organization. They balance the need to win now with the need to set the team up for the future. And that is exactly what the Redskins are missing.
Coach Gibbs proved last year that the game has not passed him by. But Team President Gibbs can't help himself from trying to do everything he can to win now. I don't blame him for not being able to do so because he is a coach at heart.
I'm afraid, however, that until the Skins realize what they are missing, we will struggle to maintain any sense of continuity at the expense of trying to win now.

I still have to wonder if there are any other punters out there who can boot the ball 50 yards consistently. We can't afford to give peyton the ball at the 50 yard line this week.
WHY IS FROST STILL A REDSKIN??? I THINK JOHN HALL COULD PUNT BETTER THAN FROST

Don,
"All this talk of needing a GM is a load of bull. There are a number of teams in the NFL that are quite good that don't have a GM and to name one would be are arch rival Dallas"
First off Jerry Jones is the GM. He's the only owner allowed on the field during games as a result of that designation. Two, what about Dallas is so great? They made the playoffs when?
I'll see your Dallas and raise you a New England where Billy from Boston for all his glory doesn't have final say on personel decisions. Steelers, Cowher, nope. Buccs, nope. I would be interested to know when, if ever a Super Bowl Champion had a coach with final say and meddlesome owner.
