Rogers is Out; Griff and Big Joe Not Looking Good, Either

Carlos Rogers is out for Sunday's game. His right arm was in a cast and sling and he says he will be back for Dallas game after breaking his thumb.
Talking to Griffin and Salave'a, Howard and I came away with the distinct impression they would not be playing Sunday, either. Salave'a said his calf is still a significant problem, and Griffin said his hip problem is tricky and there is a serious concern that he may play one week, then have to sit out a month or more because it gets worse.

I wouldn't count on either of them dressing at this point. Even if Griffin is somehow able to dress, it's tough to imagine him starting. We'll see if they practice or not - that starts in around 15 minutes - and my guess is the team might list both tackles as questionable again on the official injury report, but that's just a guess.

I say let them rest. We need a healthy D line for the second half of the season.

PManning is gonna pick us apart .... *sigh*

Posted by: X.Hog | October 18, 2006 1:50 PM

Wheeeeeeeee ... this is fun riding this roller coaster.

Posted by: X.Hog | October 18, 2006 1:52 PM

No doubt St. Joe is great in November and December; the only question is, are we going to make it till then without having our season trashed?

Posted by: Megskin | October 18, 2006 1:58 PM

You know on the dark side this week. So, let me give my dark side view of this. Good I am glad they are out. Maybe we lose and during the bye week Coach Joe gets Campbell ready. Just one dark side view

Posted by: jm220 | October 18, 2006 1:58 PM

What the heck can be wrong with a calf muscle for 3 weeks? What's up with a "hip"? Can you imagine the Hogs mentioning such things?

*grumbles*

Posted by: disappointed | October 18, 2006 1:59 PM

Can we ask Darrell Green to suit up for this game?

Hell, I'd take Alvin Walton and Barry Wilburn at this point.

Manning is licking his friggin chops right about....now.

Posted by: the cheat | October 18, 2006 2:00 PM

Well, since Carlo's is out; Our great corners get to step up and show us what they got.

Will it really make that much of a differnce? Its not like he was shutting anyone down to begin with. It's not like we're going up against the best QB/WR combo in the league.

big Jo and Corn being out is what scares me more.

sighhh.....

Posted by: BIG skins fan | October 18, 2006 2:08 PM

When does Phillip Buchanon sign?

Posted by: Wes Mantooth | October 18, 2006 2:12 PM

Shrug. After what LBM did to the Skins with all three of those guys on the field, I'm sure BBM isn't any more or less concerned. Rogers, especially, is nothing to fret over. I can't see Speedbumph or Two Wrongs being any worse. Of course, this news affects the over/under on TV.

JM, fight the urge to hope that the Redskins lose. It gives you something in common with Dallas and Philly fans. That's nothing to be proud of.

The Redskins are going to need someone on defense to step it up in a big way this weekend.

Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | October 18, 2006 2:15 PM

The Skins will be better off without Rogers. He hasn't been able to shut down anyone all year. Time for Mike Rumph and Vincent to step up and show why the Skins signed them.

Posted by: Chris | October 18, 2006 2:20 PM

HHmmmm....let's see....the Colts are averaging 27 points per game with the 21st ranked rushing offense. How many points do they score if they can actually run the ball on the Rookies? 50? The only hope in this game is for the defense to make some huge plays, including scoring a TD. I don't like our chances if Brunell has to play in a shootout. This could get ugly folks.

THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END!!

omg

Posted by: Anonymous | October 18, 2006 2:24 PM

Joe in Raleigh you have a point here. To have something in common with Dallas. (that's almost worthy of Coach Allen jumping out of his grave and pulling my Skins fan card)

Posted by: jm220 | October 18, 2006 2:24 PM

bring lavender out of retirement!!! and what was the other guys name from that era?

Posted by: deadskin | October 18, 2006 2:26 PM

Last week, I said I thought it was possible that the Skins could lose to Tennessee and beat Indy. Not now. This is grim -- especially now that the Colts have Booger McFarland (who isn't that good, but the bog needed a Booger reference). Remember how the guys got their swagger back last season? Just listening to them, you knew they were gonna go on a little roll. Not now. This group is like Delta house. It needs Bluto: "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor???"

Posted by: Jason's editor | October 18, 2006 2:28 PM

If Rogers is out who is starting corner on that side? And how much of the D does Vincent need to know to start in place of him anyhow?

Posted by: Megskin | October 18, 2006 2:28 PM

P.S. One of the many things I love about journalism ... is the way that some newspapers refer to "Booger" McFarland, with quote marks around Booger. Like you have to tell people that that isn't his given name.

Posted by: Jason's editor | October 18, 2006 2:30 PM

Carlos has not been at his best this season, but a broken thumb? are you kidding me? Jansen had two and played the whole year. Its not like he can catch the ball, just defend!

Posted by: Jake | October 18, 2006 2:30 PM

Jake is right. He might actually do better with a cast at this point.

Posted by: Megskin | October 18, 2006 2:32 PM

It won't hurt to lose Griff and Big Joe. The Colts lack a good running game. Of course, I don't think Carlos being out will make a difference either. The secondary is going to get burned severely, one way or another.

I didn't think I'd ever say this, but I'm starting to lose faith in St. Joe. This team is bad in every way except running the ball, and Saunders won't do that.

Posted by: Dave | October 18, 2006 2:35 PM

I can't believe people are happy that Rogers is out. He may not have been playing well but he still earned the #2 CB job. I still think gwilliams is going to come up with a creative way to attack Indy. He mine as well throw the kitchen sink at them - because the kitchen sink is all we have left.

Posted by: Max | October 18, 2006 2:37 PM

Sorry Wes, TB already signed Buchannon.

At least I'll have zero expectations when I sit down to watch this week's game.

Posted by: Bucktown Skins Fan | October 18, 2006 2:38 PM

To drown our sorrows, we desperately need to come up with a drinking game for the Indy game.

1 drink for a missed tackle.
1 drink for a forced fumble that isn't recovered.
1 drink for a pass that bounces out of a DBs hands.
1 drink for a 40+ yard passing play.

We should all be wasted by the 2nd quarter.

Posted by: disappointed | October 18, 2006 2:39 PM

Wow, listen to you guys. It won't hurt with Griff and Salevea out, and c. rogers won't hurt either. How can you sit here and say losing 3 starters won't hurt?? They earned their positions on the team by outperforming their backups, so yes it will hurt!!

Posted by: Max | October 18, 2006 2:40 PM

Time for GWilliams to step up to the plate, and come up with something exotic. Get the tapes from the Pats games versus the colts the past few times, and copy that. They gave the Colts FITS, and had LESSER talent than we do. At times during certain games, the Pats would play a 2-5-4, with 2 defensive linemen, 5 linebackers, and 4 defensive backs. Get out the VCR Gregg, and study up.

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | October 18, 2006 2:48 PM

You Guys........

This is the set up for Brunell to keep playing if we lose. Coach Gibbs will say they weren't at full strength for this game.

Posted by: 4th Floor | October 18, 2006 2:49 PM

The 2-5-4 sounds really good since we have no starting DTs.

Posted by: disppointed | October 18, 2006 2:50 PM

Joe Lavender played opposite Lemar Parrish, who came over from Cincy with Coy Bacon -- one of my first Redskin offseason memories. Geez, their equivalents sure would be nice to have right about now...
Anybody else wonder if we tried to trade Patten back to NE?

Posted by: Goldenfried | October 18, 2006 2:51 PM

4th Floor if he comes out and say that. We all coming looking for you.lol (this is a joke)

Posted by: jm220 | October 18, 2006 2:52 PM

1 shot for every screen or draw on 2nd/3rd and long......

Posted by: 4th Floor | October 18, 2006 2:53 PM

sounds really good since we have no starting DTs

DTs are overrated; we don't need those guys anyhow. Grilliams will just switch AC to NoseTackle and Springs can play OLB (he had six sacks last year ya know), and Vincent can play corner all day.

Posted by: Megskin | October 18, 2006 2:58 PM

Brig Owens? Pat Fisher? HELP!

Posted by: Groin Strain | October 18, 2006 2:58 PM

Carlos Rogers was hitting people like a safety.

Only problem was he was also covering people like a safety.

Posted by: Thom | October 18, 2006 3:00 PM

REDSKINS, WHY DO YOU BREAK JOHN FROM HERNDON'S HEART!?

Posted by: QFB | October 18, 2006 3:02 PM

Greg,

Ref: 2-5-4.

He had run stopping DT's used to playing in a 3-4 so they really dropped one DT for an LB.

Maybe we could run a 3-4 and blitz an LB each time. (Is it A LB or AN LB? I know it's A Linebacker but A LB doesn't sound right to me.)

Posted by: Skinz | October 18, 2006 3:02 PM

Dana and Big Daddy, where are you now?? lol

Posted by: disappointed | October 18, 2006 3:03 PM

If we're going to suffer through a shootout I'd rather take my chances with Jason Campbell. It's unclear that Mark Brunell can complete a pass for over 25 yards unless Santana Moss breaks 7 tackles and catches the ball, in coverage, 10 yards away from scrimmage.

At the very least Jason Campbell can intimidate the opposing defense with his molestor mustache (which I think is fantastic by the way).

Posted by: Skin Patrol | October 18, 2006 3:03 PM

We need to pressure Manning, if we come out with a standard 4-3, I'm going to smash a hole in my tv. Time to release the hounds, and get after it. Time for Rocky to put on his big-boy pants. Quit sending defensive backs on a blitz. G. Williams, I'm talking to you.

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | October 18, 2006 3:04 PM

A drinking game? Sheesh, and I thought playing 'Seven Degrees Of Kevin Bacon' between Mark Brunell and everything else going bad with the team was bad enough, on my part!

Although to be honest, I think the post-game Gibbs interview is much more predictable and smack-you-dead-drunk sillier.

VERY SAD IN ELKTON VA

Posted by: Tooneycat | October 18, 2006 3:07 PM

Skinz,

Good call on going over to the 3-4. Start Carter, and Daniels at ends, and Golston over the nose. Rotate guys in and out VERY Frequently, to keep everyone fresh. Blitz A LB, or two every down, punish anyone who catches the ball. These guys can be bullied.

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | October 18, 2006 3:09 PM

FlimFlam,

There is no way can I wait until Gibbs's 'super-smart' post-game remarks to start drinking.

On a somewhat related note, I did like seeing a reference to the "Body Bag" game as one of the 5 lowest moments in Gibbs history. The article failed to mention that the Iggles knocked out so many 'Skins qbs, that B Mitch was under center by the end of the game. He sneaked in a TD if memory serves.

Posted by: disappointed | October 18, 2006 3:12 PM

I think the post-game Gibbs interview is much more predictable

I'm going to watch last weeks before the game. That way I'll know what will happen and won't have to watch it on Monday.

can we borrow/rent the Bears D for a week? they do have a bye this week. i'm sure snyder would go for it.

Posted by: dealer | October 18, 2006 3:16 PM

Time for Coach Gibbs to get off the sideline. It's uncomfortable watching him down there. Either be the head coach of the GM- not both.

Do we really want G Williams as the next Redskins coach? There's a reason he's not in Buffalo anymore.

I am more than ready for a change- a losing team that has a promising young quarterback playing -and the team plays smart disciplined football in defeat is easier to watch then this garbage that is going on now.

Posted by: ez e | October 18, 2006 3:16 PM

"Cindy," if JLC makes his first post early enough on Monday, say around 9:00 am like today, I predict that we'll top 500 on a single post easily. Win or lose.

"Sorry Wes, TB already signed Buchannon."

Dagger. Well, this is probably a good thing.

Posted by: Wes Mantooth | October 18, 2006 3:19 PM

Greg,

It's hard to switch people out with Peyton calling plays at the line. What Billy did was have D that basically looked the same at each snap but brought a different "DE" in essence each time.

So I guess how it would work with the Skins is basically Marshall would call out a play and it would says which LB (I'd guess you'd drop AC to LB) would be blitzing (in effect your 4th DL) for that play.

Of course this is just a made idea for the purpose of our conversation.

Posted by: Skinz | October 18, 2006 3:20 PM

NFL.com reports Springs commenting that he feels "about the same as last week." Speedrumph and Wright are the projected starters.

Is there a mercy rule in the NFL?

Rumphelstilskin and Wright-from-the-scrapheap. Fantastic!

Posted by: 48-3 | October 18, 2006 3:26 PM

I think the point spread on this game just moved 2 points with Jason's post above.

Posted by: Ali Haji Shank | October 18, 2006 3:30 PM

I've read all the comments in the blog community over the weeks and months and never added anything cause I had nothing to add that wasn't said better by someone else. The following isn't particularly related to the defensive injuries and woes.

But I can't resist now - I have a theory to explain the inexplicable that is this team. Besides all the obvious management, coaching, player, injury related reasons why the Skins kill us every Sunday I think we're cursed. I know it's sad to fall back on supernatural nonesense but I can't help it.
I think the spirits and gods of the American Indian/Native American peoples were invoked the last time there was a disucssion about the team name and they've been cursing us ever since.
Now for the truly feverish ramblings of a heartbroken fan - think about it the KC Chiefs, Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians all have stumbled and fallen short along the way despite having some very good teams. They're all cursed but we're the worst of all.
So what to do? Well besides making the various changes of personnel and play calling etc. maybe it's time to seriously consider changing the team name, it couldn't make anything worse. If nothing else the team gets extra cash from sales of apparel that they can blow on free agents who flop on the field right?

I grasp at straws as I have nothing left. . .

post colts game:

gibbs: *lifts his t-shirt from his left shoulder with his fingers* HUHHHHHH first i want to congratulate coach dungy and the colts organiztion for having such a talented team. on offense, defense and special teams.

i'm really disappointed, we're all disappointed, our guys fought their guts out. lemme tell you i love those guys in there. i told them i wouldn't want anyone as my players than those guys. (because i hand picked them and don't have a choice).

i know most of you probly want to know about the incident that took place after the last play with Marcus Washington and Peyton Manning. Marcus was NOT begging Peyton to take him back when he was on his knees and bowing to peyton and then proceeded to grab dungy by the legs and wouldn't let go. he was just asking tony how his knee was and showing peyton how to pray.

and also we can't find #21...i don't know what happened...but i thought i saw him hiding behind dungy when i shook his hand there in midfield.

and also portis has asked for a trade to go to the colts. obviously they have a need at RB and we have 5 at that position.
"

jason: coach are you getting any DRAFT PICKS in return for any of those players?

gibbs: AAACHHUUU!!! excuse me! NO!

Kelli: coach, with this loss and most of your good players gone to the other team would be trying to look at campbell now?

gibbs: i'm not going to go into that right now. i have to watch the tape and see if all those 10 interceptions and 6 fumbles were really mark's fault.

Kelli: coach, i think they were. especially after throwing his 5th interception mark went over to dwight freeny and just handed off to him.

gibbs: like i said. i couldn't tell if that was mark or portis. i'm sure he had a good reason to do what he did. he's super-smart...

980: coach, how do you feel?

gibbs: and Kelli, i see what you were talking about. you mean when mark handed off the ball to dwight freeny...

larry michaels: who called that punt on first and goal?

gibbs: al did. he called the whole game.

not nearly as good as cp...but i tried...

Posted by: dealer | October 18, 2006 3:37 PM

Brian Davis and Vernon Dean, where have you gone? :)

Sorry, I just had to pile on... In a play on the immortal words from Rick Pitino when he was coaching the Celtics, "Darrell Green ain't walking through that door. Wilber Marshall ain't walking through that door." You dance with the one that brung 'ya, and right now, our starting CBs are Mike Rumph and Kenny Wright. If Grilliams' system is so good, he should be able to work around their deficiencies and "coach 'em up."

That's down 70 points from an 89% approval rating after the Jax game. Can't wait to see what happens after the Indy love-fest.

Max, I think you and I might be the only sane people on this board. Yes, losing Carlos Rogers will hurt us a lot (apparently these "fans" simply can't wait to see what Mike Rumph and Kenny Wright can do with even more PT?!?!?). And, obviously, losing Salavea and Griffin will hurt a lot as well.

EZ E: Any Redskins "fan" calling for Joe Gibbs to be removed from the sideline ought to be taken out back and shot. I'm pretty sure most of Washington, D.C would agree with that statement.

Jason's Editor: Other "great" things about journalism (or Big Media, as I like to call it) include reporters writing in capital letters the abbreviation "OK" instead of the proper spelling "okay"; reporters writing "all right" as 2 words rather than simply "alright";

Still catching up to all the entries....

disappointed you are right, Mitchell scored a rushing TD in the Body Bag game. If I remember correctly, when he wasn't handing off, everything was roll left, roll right because he couldn't see over the O line.

That was a tough game to endure. Buddy Ryan with that silly grin on his face. Argh!

From the wikipedia entry on "Veterans Stadium":

Another game that is best remembered by Eagles fans was known as "The Body Bag Game", which took place on November 12, 1990, when the Washington Redskins visited The Vet for a Monday Night Football game. The Eagles' head coach at that time, Buddy Ryan, was quoted as saying that the Redskins' offense would "have to be carted off in body bags". The Eagles number-one defense scored three touchdowns in a 28-14 win and knocked nine Redskin players out of the game, including both of their quarterbacks. The Redskins were forced to finish the game using running back/returner Brian Mitchell (who would become an Eagles player over a decade later) at quarterback.

Pulldownclaw, wish I could take credit for the Speedbumph moniker, but someone else came up with it. It's been used a few times on the blog and I love it.

Skinz, I've wondered the same thing: an LB or a LB? I prefer to say "an LB" because I pronounce the letters in my head. Maybe Jason's editor can give us a ruling. Cindy?

Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | October 18, 2006 4:13 PM

This is going to be an interesting game. If Portis doesnt touch the ball 25 times at a minimum there will be a reason. We are down by 21 at half. If we dont score on our 1st drive and the colts do, be prepared right away for Portis getting his touches coming out of the backfield.

After giving up a 80 yard bomb from Manning to Harrison, TV camera zooms in on Gibbs walking towards Greg Williams.

Williams is standing there looking down at his chest, cupping his breast in his left hand. Gibbs ask what in Gods name are you doing. Williams, startled looks up confused and asks, Does this Wonderbra makes my man boobs look even? I mean the right one doesnt look even with the left. Gibbs looks shocked and replies, dagnabit greg, I told you to go with the wireless cup bra! You never listen! As gibbs walks away pissed, Greg mumbles, well I told you to go with Campbell.

I am a redskins "fan" and yes I'm saying Joe as head Coach and GM is not working. How many more years of evidence do you need?

Posted by: ez e | October 18, 2006 4:22 PM

Guys, I know I'm kind of new to the team and all, but I wanted to let you know that we do feel sorry for you and we will try to take it easy on you. We're hoping that, come sunday, you starting CB's get healthy enough to play so that Peyton can show off some of the new schemes he designed during the bye-week. If not, we'll just cap it at 4 TD's on offense.

Btw, the guys on defense have promised me, since I'm the new guy, that they'll let me be the first one to dry-hump Brunell. After the first sack he often gets a bit more feisty and starts throwing the ball in the dirt or directly at us, so I'll have to do it early.

Anyways, good luck on Sunday and let your GM/errand boy Vinny Cerrato know that Dungy is open to dealing me away for 2 first round picks. I wouldn't mind, to be honest with you. Not that I don't like Indy, but I'd really rather have $15 million guaranteed than a shot at the Super Bowl.

thx

As for other calls, I'll share with you the Post stylebook, free of charge: it's okay, not OK; never ever ever use "alright" unless you're writing about the classic Who album (merely typing it made my skin crawl); and LB takes an "an" because that is indeed determined by sound, not spelling.

Booger, sorry i missed you call yesterday, but I was cutting Mr. Snyder's toenails at the time. Also, his right big-toe had a corn on it, so it took a while to file it down.

Anyways, let's touch base later tonight. I hear that we still haven't yet traded away our first-rounder this year, so maybe I can throw that Dungy's way and buy you a spot on our bench. But, anything more than $40 million over 5 years has to be approved by our friends in Denver, because then they get a commission consisting of a 3rd rounder.

I don't know if that's all right Cindy. I mean I'm left handed. However, the rest of my family is all right-handed? Alright, alright that's stretching it. I think you are only partially right.

Posted by: Skinz | October 18, 2006 4:33 PM

Barno, it's not that anybody wants to see these guys out, just that I'm not convinced it matters that much. Rogers, especially, has done nothing this season. I don't see a difference between his level of play and Speedbumph's.

I like Griff and big Joe, but their production is WAY down this season. If you add their solo tackles it equals the number of tackles by Golston + Montgomery. I'm not saying that's a tell-all stat, but it's something to consider.

In the past Grilliams has been able to piece things together and make it work. Hopefully, he'll earn his paycheck this week. I'm optimistic.

Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | October 18, 2006 4:33 PM

When the Terminators send back the next Grilliams model from the future our blitz packages will be updated.

Posted by: ArtMonkToTheSticks | October 18, 2006 4:36 PM

Vinny if you don't want TJ, then you can trade him back to Atlanta. remember, like I told you last time, Blank deals with only with me directly, so I'll set it up for you if you give me your 2nd rd pick in 2007.

thx

PS. I'll trade you Plummer for Portis.

Hey - the Colts did barely beat the Titans (which I know, I know...we lost to them) BUT...there is hope...just a little bit. I'm just worried the win it now mentality is hurting us a lot more then helping.

i'm kinda getting "todd collins" feeling for this game. BUT brunell might have a good game cuz he's not practicing that much due to his toe injury.

anyone know what the vegas line is on this game?

and brunell said "it's not time to panic yet". phew!

Posted by: dealer | October 18, 2006 5:01 PM

please kill me...

last week reminded me of the games played against the Cardinals when they were in the East. You knew that the Skins were always the better team but that they would some how find a way to lose.

In all seriousness, I don't think this team is as bad as we think they are. They should be able to mix it up with Indy. But as long as Mark Brunell is the QB of this team they will consistantly under perform. And that is a direct indictment on the coaching staff, Gibbs in particular. Loyalty is one thing, foolishness is something else entirely.

They can make due without stone-handed, double move biting Rogers and even without the Griff and Joe. The key is to do what has made them good these last few years under Williams which is to tackle well and minimize the big-play.

All I can do is sit back and hope for the best...

Posted by: Josh F. | October 18, 2006 5:03 PM

As far as the Brunell supporters go, and there are fewer and fewer these days. Do you think we could even get an 8th round draft pick for Brunell?? That's how you can really determine his value. Nobody wants the old sack of potatoes. Only Joe Gibbs would accept a super smart guy with virtually no athletic ability. If Brunell was so super smart he'd have a broadcasting job or a coaching job instead of embarassing himself out there on the field (I know the Brunell supporters are still clinging hopelessly to his record setting performance against the sorry texans). He's like a beer bellied softball player who once played pro baseball, but can barely run the bases now. Football has passed Brunell by. We need an athlete at QB, and Brunell is no longer an athlete. It's time for him to call it quits and get one of the 40 coaching jobs that the redskins have to offer. Like I said, we don't have enough coaches yet...

ONE COACH FOR EVERY PLAYER SNYDER!!

Paging Mr. Olkiewicz, Mr. Mayhew, Mr. Kalu.

Weren't the Skins kind of crappy in 1996-7 before they pulled it out of the fire? I seem to remember Babe Laufenburg or somebody like that at QB (versus Detroit?)late in the season when neither Williams or Schroeder were getting it done. Who was it? I guess if the Skins could win the Super Bowl that year, anything's possible, right?

Paging Mr. Kaufman. Mr. Mel Kaufman.

Posted by: Lavar Walt Clark | October 18, 2006 5:09 PM

Taking a shot at this Haiku thing:

Brunell has to go
he cannot throw anymore
start Jason Campbell

eh, not bad...but they should probably start Collins this week and give Campbell time to get ready for Dallas...just a thought

Posted by: Josh F. | October 18, 2006 5:13 PM

Another barno prediction: Salave'a and Griffin both play on Sunday, and Springs starts.

I guess that's 3 predictions, but who's counting?

Redskins 30 Colts 24

Posted by: Barno | October 18, 2006 5:18 PM

Since reliving the past is much better than looking to this Sunday, what was the game down in Dallas where the Skins knocked out 2-3 cowboys qbs? Anyone remember that? Some clown from the Ivy League ended up playing qb.

I got the Redskins NFL Films DVD boxset for my birthday. Chances of me slipping it in before the second quarter even starts? 86%

Posted by: Body Bags | October 18, 2006 5:18 PM

Max...no, the 'Skins couldn't get an 8th round pick for Brunel, because the draft is only 7 rounds long!

Posted by: Groin Strain | October 18, 2006 5:19 PM

Groin Strain misses point.
Max too subtle for the blog.

Posted by: HaikuMan | October 18, 2006 5:21 PM

Hey, if anyone can find a way to trade an 8th round pick, it would be the 'Skins!

Posted by: Traffic Guy | October 18, 2006 5:23 PM

I would still have to agree with Max...I wouldn't trade my broken lawnmower for Brunell to play for me in my two-hand touch league.

Posted by: Josh F. | October 18, 2006 5:23 PM

John from Herndon roots for the Skins, John from Herndon hopes they will win,
But all Snyder's coaches and all of Gibbs' men
can't put John's heart back together again.

Posted by: Lavar Walt Clark | October 18, 2006 5:24 PM

Two thoughts:

1) Are Mike Bass and Pat Fischer available?
2) So we wouldn't get an 8th rounder for Brunell. What would we get for Campbell right now - a 4th?

Posted by: Rich | October 18, 2006 5:24 PM

Maybe we can get that back-up they have playing for the Jets? I hear he is pretty durable, has a strong arm, and isn't afraid to throw the ball downfield! Some kid from Tulane...the name escapes me.

Posted by: Josh F. | October 18, 2006 5:31 PM

...or rather, NOT playing for the Jets.

Posted by: Josh F. | October 18, 2006 5:32 PM

My head tells me that there is no chance of tasting victory on Sunday. But as hard as I try to stay un-emotional toward this game, my loyalty keeps pulling me back. It keeps whispering to me....

What if...the Skins offense regains that smash-mouth swagger?

What if...the toss sweep works as well as it did against the Jags?

What if...Brunell gets hot and makes a few plays?

What if...Marcus Washington plays like a man posessed against his former team?

What if...the Rookies carpe diem?

What if...the Grim Reaper comes up with yet another fumble return for a TD?

What if...the defense plays inspired football and attacks the ball like they once have?

What if...

Please tell me I'm not alone in my insanity.

Posted by: CMoney | October 18, 2006 5:33 PM

Ramsey would never play for St. Joe again.

Posted by: disappointed | October 18, 2006 5:34 PM

CMoney, I think we would all love to see those things happen this sunday!! I definitely need the team to do something positive, because we have way too much negative material to go on right now. TV sounds like a very level headed super smart guy. Maybe he can bring a fresh attitude back to this defense. Maybe his presence will psychologically lift the team over that hump this week. We can certainly hope. I would love to see somebody on the skins team make a game changing play this week!! We are in desperate need of a BIG game changing/momentum changing play. Like Lavar gave us back in 2001 I believe. Maybe Marcus Washington or Sean Taylor have one in them? I may be negative, because that's what I see, but I'm certainly hoping for the positive!!

Posted by: Max | October 18, 2006 5:45 PM

"This group is like Delta house. It needs Bluto"

No, what this team needs, and maybe Gibbs too, is a BODY BAG GAME.

Week 6 Stats:

P. Rivers 29/39 • 334 • 2 TD
M. Leinart 24/42 • 232 • 2 TD
A. Smith 20/31 • 214 • 2 TD
B. Gradkowski 25/44 • 184 • 2 TD
V. Young 13/25 • 161 • 1 TD

No reason whatsoever to not start the youth now. Will force us to call smarter plays and RUN THE BALL MORE.

Posted by: jesse | October 18, 2006 5:50 PM

We need a bunch of CLAWs.

Yea - that's It!

Posted by: Anonymous | October 18, 2006 5:52 PM

The only thing we NEED is a "W"

No matter how it happens. Even if it is a Bears like "W," which is exceedingly unlikely with the way the D has been playing.

If by some grace of Joe's bro they can eek one out, all this negative talk is gone.

There are no cheap one's against the Colts (At least not until January), so any way it happens makes it all better.

Dear Joe,

I know you're looking out for me as good Christian. After all, I did save your life by driving you to the hospital when you came to visit me (nobody else even gave me a call!). But, I just wanted to remind you, in case you forgot, that I still get paid my full salary this year if I get demoted or even cut. So, don't worry about me. Do whatever you need to do - I will have no hard feelings I swear. If you decide to sit me, I may even get time to grow my toenail back over the next few weeks. If you want, I can talk to Pat about it and get her blessing as well.

thanks,

hey Mark,

I just wanted to let you know that you left your pink thong in the training room the other day. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but, you see, some of the D-Linemen were in there for treatment late yesterday and found it and were a little shocked. Don't worry though, I covered for you and told them that John Hall just forgot to pack it with the rest of his stuff b/c he was in a rush. Uh, maybe you could grab it next time you're in here?

Could this be the time to add a Dan Synder favorite fix...a special consultant??
Perhaps Buddy Ryan could jump on the payroll and figure out what's going wrong, or....Richie Pettibone could hang up the restaurant managers smock and ride shotgun the rest of the way with Grilliams.

Before you laugh, remember all the special consultants we have had in the Snyder era.

Posted by: Special Consultant Anyone?? | October 18, 2006 10:05 PM

Anyone surprised that this Skins locker room and interactions with the Media have held up so well in the face of this?? Is it possible they NEED a shake-up to turn the corner??

In NY Tiki and Shockey call out the coach for poor play-calling and yell at linemen for not blocking and then come off the bye and then crush the Skins and Falcons. Chad Johnson is calling out Palmer and the Marvin in the press, they will probably light it up. Billick fires Fassel and Cards fired their O-coordinator.

Maybe it's time to fire someone other than the kicker, or for someone to step up and call out the DB's and call out Mark publicly.

Posted by: SmellsLikeTeamSpirit | October 18, 2006 10:36 PM

Just watched the Gibbs Wednesday presser on Redskins.com -- in what is usually a more relaxed setting, Coach has his game face on. I like it. This is when Gibbs does his best work, folks. Nobody believes in this team right now and he is the best at playing that into an inspired showing on the field. I know the numbers don't add up, but my inner Hog can't help but think that this a perfect setting for the Skins to toy with our emotions and pull off the upset. Yes, I'm irrational; but I can't help it if I bleed burgandy and gold.

On another note, the term "up here" must be forever banned from the Gibbs Presser Drinking Game because someone might get killed.

Posted by: CMoney | October 18, 2006 10:46 PM

Eureka! I've got it! I know what we need to resolve all of our team chemistry issues!

We just need to rent a couple of houseboats and get the team out for a nice afternoon/evening on the lake!

The Vikings did it and now they are 3-2!

Posted by: Ali Haji Shank | October 19, 2006 1:45 AM

Actually, its all because of me. I gave the Redskins team chemistry... too bad Joe isn't big on Love Boats and bad character.

Posted by: Fred Smoot | October 19, 2006 8:40 AM

If the Redskins lose Sunday, then:
1)Jason Campbell needs to be named the starter for the remainder of the season;

2)Rally the team and the fans with a huge bonfire at midfield, with the 700-page playbook providing some of the brighest flames

3)Run, run, run the ball. At everyone, through everyone, around everyone. When Portis gets tired, give it to Duckett. Then give it to the Rock. Then to the punter, if that's what it takes. Just run the ball!

4)Al Saunders was a bad fit for this team. Good man, intelligent coordinator, but simply a bad fit. Gibbs broke a cardinal rule: he tried to overhaul an engine when all he had to do was replace the starter! The team has lost its identity. Go back to running the ball, and give Al some lovely parting gifts at season's end.

5)Part ways with Brunell at season's end. Unless we can schedule Houston 16 times next year.

6)Find a new general manager/Director of Player Personnel.

7)Keep the defense, with one exception. Injuries have plagued the unit this year, so it's hard to justify an overhaul. But Carlos Rogers shows little promise of ever reaching the team's expectations. Adios to him, at all costs.

An open Haiku to Cornilius:

Must win games force risks:
Lion heart, eagle fierce or
Griffin just a myth?

"I've got to be smart," Griffin said. "It's one of those things where I could play one game and then miss four, and then that hurts the team more. I have to be smart about what I do, and I don't want to hurt the team doing it."

Posted by: Skinz | October 19, 2006 9:27 AM

If the Redskins lose Sunday, then:

I'm not a fair-weather fan, but this corpse is starting to stink a bit... this is looking to be a certainty.

1)Jason Campbell needs to be named the starter for the remainder of the season;

Good luck getting that one through to Joe. I wonder it Gibbs is as fussy at Mark behind closed doors as he is with the media when this topic is brought up. Seeing how he always brings up the positives of Mark's miserable performances makes me halfway ready to do a rewrite of the Monty Python 'Dead Parrot' sketch about this. ("The Jacksonville Blue prefers throwin' the ball out of bounds! Remarkable quarterback, id'nit, squire? Wonderful awareness! !")

2)Rally the team and the fans with a huge bonfire at midfield, with the 700-page playbook providing some of the brighest flames

If the playbook can't light up a scoreboard, or light up our offense, I'm not sure it'll keep a fire lit, either.

3)Run, run, run the ball. At everyone, through everyone, around everyone. When Portis gets tired, give it to Duckett. Then give it to the Rock. Then to the punter, if that's what it takes. Just run the ball!

Eight man front, eight man front, eight man front... A decent running game exists under the notion that there is a possibility of a pass that might go over their heads if they don't have that angle covered.

Sadly, I'm not so sure if it's so much the mechanic as it is some of his tools....

5)Part ways with Brunell at season's end. Unless we can schedule Houston 16 times next year.

Here, here, well spoken, Bruce!

6)Find a new general manager/Director of Player Personnel.

You mean we have one, now? I could swear we had a guy playing Madden 06 making the choices for us. (Maybe that's why we've given up on draft picks - you can't scout the coming year's draft picks on the game, because they're generated randomly....) :P

7)Keep the defense, with one exception. Injuries have plagued the unit this year, so it's hard to justify an overhaul. But Carlos Rogers shows little promise of ever reaching the team's expectations. Adios to him, at all costs

Injuries will continue to plague the team, with players getting closer to retirement with each passing season - this is what you get when you bring in all these 'smart, tested veterans'. Carlos is still a question mark - I'm beginning to wonder if these 10-yard drop backs that the Jackal, Speedbumph and Two-Wrongs are taking are so they have more time to sort through the overcoaching, rather than just any particular daftness.... And if there's anyone that needs shooting out of the air cannon, it's really Archulutacris, in my opinion.

Posted by: FlimFlam | October 19, 2006 9:32 AM

yeah the line hasn't moved much it's actually at 9 now. so either all the diehard skins fans are gambling with their hearts or all the smart money's going on the skins.

I was thinking about all of the worst possible scenerios that could happen this weekend, since I am an optimist and all. Here it is, we go into Indy and do not attempt to throw one pass all game. It basically looks as if we are playing in the 20's or using Army/Navys college game. We end up winning the game.

After the Game Gibbs stresses that Mark Brunell managed the game beautifully and how glad he is to have him as his starter. He heard the critics all week and this performance should show how valuable he is to this team.

Posted by: gatorskinz2000 | October 19, 2006 10:21 AM

gator, that's what all skins fans are fearing.(but W is a W and will give the skins some momentum against the girls) but even if brunell doesn't play well and they win gibbs will bring up the chicago/arizona game.

Posted by: dealer | October 19, 2006 10:38 AM

Dudes and Megskin and Lisa and other lady-dudes,

I have the weirdest feeling about this game. It is illogical like me asking the hottest girl in high school to homecoming but I talked myself into it then and I'm doing it again now. The vibe I get is this: we are down, wounded, and our pride has been stomped on like an over-aggressive frat kid that thought his boys had his back but they didn't because he is a chooch and had to find out the hard way. I remember feeling like this after the Oakland game last year. Terrible loss...

We are going to come out with so much Nanger (naked anger) on Sunday. The Colts are awesome but they are due for a letdown. It may not happen against us but somebody is going to beat those guys. We may not win but I will bet $$$ that we put up an absurd fight. Ultimately, we might just be undertalented in too many areas to win the game (which by the way makes me want to pull my eyes out so they can see the disgust on my face. This is where draft picks are supposed to come in handy instead of being cut...paging Manuel White...please pick up Robert McCune who's doing push ups for $$ at White Flint Mall...thank you).

Ali Haji Shank: great week for you so far.

Posted by: ArtMonkToTheSticks | October 19, 2006 10:48 AM

Who cares about the game on Sunday anyway? I'm gonna cozy up on my couch under a nice soft blanket with a big bowl of popcorn and tall glass of ice-cold crystal clear pepsi and watch Rent, Moulin Rogue, and Weekend at Bernie's.

Posted by: Chief Clancy Wiggum | October 19, 2006 10:50 AM

The only way we have a shot at this game is if Payton Manning throws 2 picks, or their running backs cough up the ball. With all of the injuries right now at key positions on defense it will be difficult to stop the Colts.

I read the article about our LB's under performing etc. etc. But in reality we have only one good LB playing, Marcus Washington. The other 2 are "decent" NFL LB's. We keep thinking that this is the LB core of Pierce, Washington and Arrington. We are far from that group. Just like Campbell, we wont really know how good Rocky is until we get him in the game. This could be a good opportunity to do so. I saw him play at Miami and he was a solid LB. Sometimes you need to switch it up if isnt working. And right now other thatn Washington, our LB's arent working.

Posted by: gatorskinz2000 | October 19, 2006 11:04 AM

i'm pissed off again after reading all the comments...we deserve better. we are NOT in ChICAgo!!! and we're not the chicago cubs (fans)!!!

and next time i hear wilbon say "i don't care about this team i'm from chicago"...ARGHHHHH... we don't care mikie!!! we don't give a crap! just shut up! you get paid to write for the skins and be objective no matter where you're from. you're a professional. and you get paid like one. they gave you the job because they thought you'd be objective inspite of what city you came from. and btw, if you think chicago is going to win or even go to the SB...you're dreamin.

and hey mr. snyder, thank you for spending all this money on this team but once AGAIN for the 3rd time your cronies FOOLED you. you've had 3 coaches here and 2 GM's and what's been constant in the past 8 years: VINNYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!
FIRE HIM!!!!!!! and get someone who knows about talent to say F-NO!!!! to DESMOND HOWARDS of JOE GIBBS II!!!

MonkToTheSticks, so how did it work out with the homecoming date? If we're going with that analogy, might as well find out how it ends, right?

Do they still make Crystal Pepsi? Makes me want to pour myself a glass... right now!

gator, Lemar's a decent LB. Who's the other decent one? I was hoping we might see old Push-ups for Dollars McCune on the field this week.

I really AM going to make serious, serious money when my book* comes out. Er, after I actually write it.

*Commercial plug: "How to Inspire People to Write Silly Poems For Any Situation" is a great Christmas gift!

OK, another distraction. What other slanderous names can we come up with for the players? We've already annointed:

Carlos the Jackal
Kenny "Two-Wrongs-Don't-Make-A" Wright
"Speedbumph" Rumph.

How about:
Warrick "Can't Getta" Holdmann
ArchulettaNutherGoBy - Maybe 'Archabingus'?
Ade "Idle" Jimoh
TJ "My Career's In The Bucket" Duckett

Who else can we add?

gatorskinz2000, I expected HaikuMan to be on top of this, but he appears to be too busy counting his future fortune. You need to tighten up that first line in your first haiku. One too many syllables.

Love the "tears dripping in beer" line. Is that why mine's been tasting saltier than a pretzel?

Um, Chief Clancy Wiggum, please look up the definition of haiku. Thanks.
