The Deadline Has Passed
According to the team, they made no maves by the 4 pm trade deadline, so I'm heading home. Not much going on in the NFL with the deadline for the most part leaguewide. I could see the Skins making a move for Nate Clements in the offseason, and that guy is going ot get paid.

Perhaps the news that the Redskins didn't trade for anyone by the 4pm deadline is the best news this week. Did we really want to see them make another stupid personnel move?

woulda been nice to see them cut some of the slack on the team and maybe pick up a few draft picks for the upcoming year. with all the depth and talent we have at wr and rb, and the need other teams have for them, it's just a shame.
Posted by: Helmfish | October 17, 2006 4:22 PM
The problem with cutting slack is no other NFL is into buying unproven or washed up players like the Redskins. I agree with Terry on this one. No news is good news. Ideally, we'd like some picks out of it all, but reality is (not one of my crazy movie comparisons)apart from unloading Duckett, no one else would want our cast-offs.
Posted by: Dorf | October 17, 2006 4:27 PM
Dorf, we broke 300 on just one entry yesterday. And when I say "we," I mean "you." If your supervisors give you any grief, tell 'em to call me!
Posted by: Jason's editor | October 17, 2006 4:31 PM
Dorf, I don't think anyone would want Duckett, either. If they had really pushed it, they may have been able to get a 6 from someone. We're better off standing pat. If there are injuries down the line, he may become useful, I suppose. What a dumb trade that was.

Do we really need Patton on our roster.

If Joe Gibbs were the captain of the Titanic:
Crew Member - "Sir, the ship is sinking!"
Joe - "Well the good thing is we are all in this together."
Crew Member - "Uh, how exactly is that suppose to be comforting?"
Joe - "Well we got some real good character crew men onboard."
Crew Member - "I'm sorry, let me rephrase, what are we doing to keep from sinking into the frozen Atlantic?"
Joe - "Well I can't comment on that until I have a chance to see the tape of us hitting the iceberg."
Crew Member - "But didn't we hit the iceberg when first mate Brunell tried to squeeze through 4 different icebergs?"
Joe - "Well the first mate showed me a lot of things out there, and I think we are going to use him to navigate the life rafts."
Crew Member - "But Sir, don't you think we should use the younger, faster, stronger 3rd mate to man the life rafts? I mean we all love the first mate, but hasn't he just gotten us into this mess."
Joe - "No."
Crew Member - "I see, well do you think we should have the 3rd mate ready in case we get out onto the Atlantic and something happens to the first mate?"
Joe - "No."
Crew Member - "But Sir, if we don't prepare 3rd mate Campbell, then we will be stuck with the second mate and that doesn't really give us much chance of survival, does it?"
Joe - "Well we won't have to worry about that because nothing will ever happen to first mate Brunell and everything will turn out fine."
Crew Member - "Uh Sir, I just wanted to inform you that while we were having this conversation all of the life rafts have just floated away."
Joe - "Well, the good thing is we are all in this together."

Gibbs needs to take a lesson from Billick. Fassel and Billick are good friends, but when it came down to it, Billick had to call the plays. He picked a good time though. During their bye week.
Our bye week is next week.........

'Captin Gibbs' has just been forwarded to many many Redskins fan.
Posted by: 4th Floor | October 17, 2006 5:24 PM
Stro, unfortunatley, we'll probably not fire anyone and possibly hire newly available dead weight from the other teams who were smart enough to get rid of them.
Captain Gibbs from the poop deck: "We've been saying all voyage how that iceberg could probably sink us. We discussed it as a crew and we knew going in that this could happen. Dagnabbit its cold in this water."
Posted by: Dorf | October 17, 2006 5:26 PM
I just read someplace that the main reason Gibbs isn't alarmed about being 2-4 is because in nascar that means 2 1st place finishes and 4 2nd place finishes.
Posted by: Ali Haji Shank | October 17, 2006 5:32 PM
joe in raleigh broke news 1st but any chances of running down our throats with new addition booger mcfarland(from tampa) just got worse...CP cant have 25 carries if you dont get 1st downs..when it rains it pours!!
Posted by: PEYTON MANNING | October 17, 2006 5:51 PM
The Reskins need to do what other teams often do: dump dead weight players or players they can make a profit off of and not have any nightmares about later.
This year trade Andre Carter, Adam Archuletta, Carlos Rogers. Find out about Jason Campbell or trade him, use Duckett or trade him, (I wish Lavar was here to trade), trade Brandon Lloyd and Ladell Betts (we have plenty of receivers and running backs.) Get some draft pick or useful players from other teams.
Posted by: Usmaan | October 17, 2006 5:55 PM
Peyton, you needed Booger because your main man Cory Simon ate his way onto the non-football injury list and Freeney has been exposed this year. You and Boog need to get boohoo boxes ready.
Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | October 17, 2006 5:59 PM
And Philip Buchanon goes to Tampa to take Booger's roster spot. Nice.
Posted by: Ali Haji Shank | October 17, 2006 6:05 PM
Funny, but depression sets in when you realize 2 things:
1) That was Titanic's maiden voyage... how many chances has Gibbs had?
2) The actual captain of the Titanic, Edward John Smith, named his daughter Helen Melville Smith. A popular novel involving an aggressive white whale describes a ship captain's obsession with taking revenge. It ultimately leads to his demise. Throughout the story, the narrative contiually describes a white hump (sort of resembling an iceburg). The book is "Moby Dick". Its author was Herman Melville. The point: Titanic and the 06 Skins were doomed from the beginning by their captains.

Bmore Sun is reporting that Redskins have hired Fossil as Asst to the Asst Offensive Coordin/ Head Coach. Further reported that Jim's main duties will be to call the flanker screen power right, since coach Al runs the left side. It was decided by Coach G that since most defenses know we're coming left, adding Fossil improves us 50% on called screens.
I'll follow up with anything further.

Duckett for a d-back. any d-back. my grandmother. the mailman. anyone who, when a ball is thrown into their hands, they don't drop it.
But, of course, in keeping with this non-sensical season, they don't get anyone.
At least the Redskin administration is only the second worst in Washington.

One of my problems is trying to figure out which coach, in case Joe Gibbs gets sick or something, fills in. We have more virtual head coaches (at head coach salaries) virtually on top of each other.
One thing I'd like to see is the dropping of everyone having to say "Hall of Fame Coach Joe Gibbs" every time they refer to him. Yes, I know he's a Hall of Famer but that's based on his previous coaching career. He's not "Hall of Fame" coaching now, he's a current coach of an average team (at best) with an average (at best) coaching record. And I don't mean any disrespect.
Does anyone think that if the Hall of Fame selection committee would have nominated him (let alone voted him in) if they knew he might come back? Isn't that a reason that at least one prominant coach wasn't nominated? Because everyone ust "assumed" he'd come back to coaching and they didn't want to select him knowing he'd "probably" come back to the coaching ranks.
Please!!! Joe Gibbs is a good coach; his past record is in the past. Let's accept him in the present. And right now the present coach should consider shaking up the team, whether it be by bringing in a new quarterback (or an old quarterback) or following the Baltimore Ravens or Arizona Cardinals (or, for the matter, the Oakland Athletics - who fired a coach for only getting them into the playoffs) and shake up the coaching staff since the coaching staff clearly isn't getting its coaching through to the players.
Man, I wonder what a second season of Marty would have been like. But, the owner got what he wanted; he got Spurrier. And he got Gibbs.
Posted by: JJ | October 17, 2006 7:22 PM
A second season of Marty would have been like the excitement you see in Sandy Eggo. Yay?
Posted by: RL | October 17, 2006 7:43 PM
reality about gibbs is 31 other nfl teams would not hire him based on his current record.time to cut hof cord and move on..
Posted by: skinz | October 17, 2006 8:14 PM
Not likely. Marty got the team turned around but Spurrier became available, and Marty, if Spurrier wasn't available, would have had the Snyder money to do thing

Here comes Rogers, Carter, and Duckett
Hailed loud by a brass band tucket
Skins they still be
But will improvement we see

Marty got the team turned around but Spurrier became available,
Although Marty is a great coach, he has yet prove he can win in the playoffs. A 5-12 record just stinks. But, you have to hand it to the guy, he always turns stinky teams into winners.
Can't say I'm a big fan of "Run, Run, Pass, Punt" football though.

I wanted to get the takes of as many people as I can regarding the losing we've gotten used to.
I've been an avid Skins fan since 1989 (when I was old enough to understand the game). After the SB win in 91, and after Gibbs left, it was very tough to get used to losing. After 15 years, and 2 playoff berths, though, (I can't believe i'm saying this) I've gotten used to seeing this team let me down. I'm used to the bigtime preseason expectations, and I'm also used to the Regular season letdowns. I guess I've become a victim of the Snyder hypnosis. He spends big bucks, and makes me believe we're gonna kick a$$. It also helps that we're the Champions of the offseason EVERY YEAR. Our offseasons are the best of all 31 that don't win the SB.
That's why, I believe, I don't even care that much when the Skins lose. I remember throwing stuff around in my house when Elway threw the hail mary to Rod Smith to beat us years back. Now, however, I calmly watch as rookie Vince Young eats up our gazillion dollar swiss cheese defense. It's a sad sight that I've gotten used to.
Oh well, at least we got the Snyder Trophy to hold up every single offseason. I think it's an eight-peat now. That's so tight.
Posted by: K-Man | October 17, 2006 9:33 PM
Megskin, that meltdown is classic. Right up there with Jim Mora, AI, and Howard Dean in terms of soundbites. He starts out fairly even-keeled but by the second bullsh-t, you can tell he's ordering up the code red. And who knew you repeating explitives was so effective?

All of these people blasting Gibbs are actually Boofer in disguise. That's the only explanation I can come up with.

we should have signed Phillip Buchanon and go after every other hurricane ever recruited by butch davis.
sike just kidding, rumph was one of those. crazy that rumph and buchanon were in the same first round as ed reed. i was however completely convinced that rumph would be good player for us this year. why the hell do we take 3 players off a team that won in OT in the reggie bush bowl.
Posted by: poop | October 17, 2006 10:43 PM
K-Man,
I think the reason that we are so saddened by the demise of the Skins season is because they actually went to the playoffs last season. I had become accustomed to the team losing every year (as bad as it hurt) and did not really expect anything. However, after they made the playoffs last season, brought in more offensive weapons, etc., I was hoping we finally were on our way. As usual, it was just a pipe dream.
Posted by: Lisa | October 17, 2006 10:57 PM
The people blasting Gibbs are young kids with no understanding of history. There is no coach I want running my beloved 'Skins than Joe Jackson Gibbs. St. Joe is, continues to be, and will always be this franchise. Period, full stop.
While I would love for this team to be a Super Bowl contender, the current ownership will likely forever prevent that from happening. Joe Jackson Gibbs is the only reason I continue to even care about the games.
All of you who would disagree are probably too young to appreciate what this man means to the franchise and the city.

I've been a huge fan of Joe Gibbs since he first came to the Redskins so long ago. He is a class act, and was a great coach. But now he's an average to below-average coach. No getting around it. Like the players he has coached over the years, time passes and skills erode. He recognized it himself by bringing in Al Saunders. Snyder's motive in brining him back back was to put butts in the seats. If you can't do it with on-field play, then you bring back the Chosen One. Great move early on, but it's not working long-term.
The 'Skins simply can't compete on a weekly basis with the best teams in football. Their schedule is a killer; but if you're going to be the best, you have to beat the best. They cannot do that.
You can see it in Coach Gibbs face; he knows how this is going to turn out. This isn't fun for him anymore, and he doesn't need the money. He was once part of a magical time in Redskins history, with a superb supporting case in general managers, owners and assistant coaches and tough players. I think he now sees that he can't re-create it.
Parcells has come closer to re-creating what he once had with the Giants, but you still don't feel that same sense of confidence that he had with the Giants all those years ago. He simply knew they were going to win week in and week out. But free agency has changed all that.
Gibbs can still coach the team to a win you don't expect him to on occasion, but not consistently.
It's time to cancel the mission for the Space Cowboys: Coach Gibbs needs to step aside at season's end. It was a great try, and he did better than most expected, but you can't go home again.
Posted by: Montana'skins fan | October 18, 2006 8:47 AM
On the press conferences (and this past one in particular), if Gibbs/Saunders really were going to pull Brunell and start Jason, or if they were going to activate all the running backs AND play them, do you think they would announce it? Don't you think it might make a difference in the game planning for the Colts to prep for a team that tends toward the (bad) passing game of screens and passes to the left side versus the WaPost suggested 90% running game with a new QB?
The Colts have the WORST defense in NFL against the rush. They pick up a defensive tackle from the 25th ranked rushing defense, Tampa Bay.
This is the PERFECT game for JC to start. The Colts have to know that we will come at them with the rush (which they know we must know is the only way to control Peyton Manning ... keep him off the field). Why tell?

I find it comical that Dan Snyder has not figured out the Redskins have become the place where All-Pro's and coaches come to collect enormous amounts of money, then retire. This is by far the most mismanaged organization in professional sports. At least the Yankees win and make the playoffs every year.

CP's Titanic thing -
You know, that's how Gibbs comes across at the press conferences. You actually have no idea what he says to the players behind closed doors. He could easily be yelling at the players. (This could be one of the reasons that players are loyal to him.)
Jason, any word about how Gibbs much tougher Gibbs comes across to the players behind closed doors?
