Troy Vincent is at Redskins Park
Not sure how much it will help at this point, but saw Vincent walk in a few minutes ago. I would imagine they would get a deal done with the DB today. They got in touch with him last week and he knows several of the defensive coaches, so I would expect it to get done.
Will post more when I know it.
Okay, a brief interlude. Now back to the regularly scheduled grumbling and roasting ...

I guess I am not so dumb after all! I suggested picking him up last week. Wait, maybe the Skins agreeing with me PROVES I am dumb. Cause they are not so great at picking players. Forget I said anything!

At this point, Helen of Troy would be an improvement.

You know how when you're playing basketball or softball or volleyball or whatever sport with your friends, and there's that one really unathletic friend who shows up just to watch and hang out, and even though you know he doesn't really want to, you end up convincing him to play because you need even teams, and he plays and maybe he tries hard but he's just so damn unathletic and uncoordinated, and he trips over his own feet and misses the ball even when it comes right to him, and maybe he even falls down for no real reason other than that's just the way he's made, and you get the idea that he sort of knows what he's supposed to do, but his body just isn't built that way and in the end he just looks all stupid?
That's what it's like watching Carlos Rogers play. It's painful. Troy Vincent can't be any worse.
Posted by: Epstein'sMother'sDoctor | October 16, 2006 12:11 PM
Vincent will most likley be a safety and not take Rogers spot. That was funny though hahaha

hes too old for cb,thats why he was moved to safety at buffalo.do we sit 30 mill adam for 34 yr old vincent.just another desperate move(duckett)that will solve nothing!

I heard that Vinny sent Buffalo a 5th round pick just out of habit when we brought in Vincent.

I cannot offer anything remotely constructive at this point because I am too distraught. I do know a few things about how I am feeling and I'm going to share them with you.
1) I am beyond upset at Grilliams right now. His call to bring in certain guys and let others go. The D is bad like a breakdancing mythical dwarf playing dodgeball blindfolded. See? That didn't even make any sense. And neither did signing Archu-deetoo to the BIGGEST safety contract ever, signing Andre Carter who gets blown up on run plays (first person who mentions that he got a sack yesterday and thus played well should have their posting priveledges revoked until 2009), keeping Holdman, releasing Harris and Clark and having every offense we play starting with Seattle last year in the playoffs completely aware of how to attack our D and fend off our meager blitz attempts.
2) The D is the reason we are bad. That is it. The one theme this year is that we have not stopped anybody at any point. The O has been up and down and frustrating at times (lots of times) but 22 points should have been plenty against the 0-5 nashvegas oilers.
3) I am irritated at the columnsists and reporters (JLC excluded) because these chooches keep saying 'we need to run the ball' and ignore the bigger picture. In the 2nd half, we tried to run it and got stuffed. You can't just keep getting stuffed. You have to run successfully. No gain on 1st down means you're passing on your next 2 and we were in 3rd and long all day. They point to the # of runs and ignore facts. We ran the heck out of it in the 1st half. When they adjusted and we were behind, we couldn't run it the same way. It is hacky journalism to point to the correlation between # of runs and wins. We've discussed it before, of course you win if you run more. It means you were ahead and running well. Infuriating.
4) I am unbelievably upset. Like beyond consoling. My girlfriend finally just left after hour 2 of me staring at the wall to the right of the tv after the game.
5) We mortgaged the future for this year and have nothing but bleak prospects after this season with under-performers earning millions and little cap room to make moves, no draft picks, no GM to stand up to Grilliams and say: 'NO you arrogant man, Archuletta is not good and shall not play for us. Hopefully, he goes somewhere else and we shall victimize him as we did in STL last year.'
6) I don't care if we rally as we did last year and make the playoffs. I have seen this play before and I know how it ends. I have not been this down about the Redskins since the Norv Turner era with his press conferences where he would say: 'well, you can't fault the effort'.
7) 202 has not been a good addition to the Blamily (blog family).
That is all for now. What a (*&%%&*^*()& shabingus on stilts.

Vincent is OBVIOUSLY the missing piece of the Super Bowl puzzle. can't wait to plug him in and run the table. The only thing I don't understand is this:
As he is a free agent, does this mean that our customary draft pick compensation will go to the NFL for entry into the pool of compensatory picks? Or, maybe, we'll simply pay Denver the usual tax of a third round pick. Since Vincent has ties to the defensive coaching staff I forsee a combination of 2-4 picks of value equivalent to a mid second rounder.
Either way, I'm sure Eric Schaffer and the boys will find a complicated method for getting rid of a pick or two, even if it involves selecting Vincent in the first round next year.

ArtMonk2Sticks, agreed on D-problems, esp. if the massive Archuleta contract doesn't contain a mulligan clause. I'm thinking that, if they do pick up Vincent, then there is going to be an even MORE aggressive rotation in the DBs ... so that AA is not in on passing down and Springs isn't in on running downs, with Vincent/Wright/Rumph/Doughty playing in between (with Sean Taylor playing every down). I'm hoping that, in addition to Vincent, the Skins call in Brian Kelly, a corner that the Bucs are looking to trade.

The Redskins ran 13 offensive plays in the 3rd Quarter. 3 were Clinton Portis running plays for a combined 8 yards.
Its not "hacky journalism" to question that, no matter how many times they struggled to run the ball on 1st down.
Posted by: Rain Man | October 16, 2006 12:58 PM
yah, Denver, no one seems to be talking about the first round swap with the Broncos which was apart of the trade...The skins front office is full of a bunch of morans...

ArtMonkToTheSticks,
If I was not so sad, your comments would have made me laugh - you are right on target. I listened to all the analysts yesterday trying to find some kind of hope - they all basically said the same thing - run the ball!! EXCEPT for Trevor Matich who said the Skins could not run the ball because the Titans adjusted in the second half and we could not get anywhere.
I'm dying inside and out....

Does anyones else feel that even when we get "talented" players to come here they cant play all of a sudden. Lets take a look at a linebacker who came here and was just plain bad. Jeremiah Trotter. He is playing excellent, we get him and pay him a good amount. He stinks. We cut him. He goes back to Philly and resumes his excellence. Now watch, we'll get rid of Holdman, he'll go to the cowgirls and he will become a probowler.
I like when people talk of the NFL as a copycat league. I'm just glad the Redskins dont like to copy any one. People praised the Patriots on how they constantly built through the draft and won 3 of 4 superbowls. So what do we do? We pick up the players they feel dont help them(Patten, Fauria). The Steelers build through the draft and get a title. So we throw money at Randle-El and he comes. Probably one of the better pick-ups we got.
Can someone help me out and let me know how many picks we have in the draft next year and where they are at? I know we let our 2nd rounder go to the Jets for Rocky Mcintosh, what do we have left?
Posted by: gatorskinz2000 | October 16, 2006 1:03 PM
Here is the way the Deal with Denver breaks down:
Depending on how each team fares this season, the two teams also could wind up swapping first-round picks, but only if Washington is scheduled to pick between No. 21 and No. 31 and Denver's first-round draft position is even higher. Unlikely, though not impossible.
Posted by: Greg(Boston) | October 16, 2006 1:05 PM
I think it's time to start talking about Sean Taylor. He's as lost in coverage as Rodgers, Wright, Rumph, Stanley Richard, Clarence Vaughn and Alvin Walton ever are/were. And besides being at the right place at the right time on a couple of fumbles last year, what has he done besides spit on people and threaten people in a prayer group. Oh Yeah, and misplace hit ATV's. The worst thing that happened to this D was Taylor settling his case. He no longer hits people with the "You Stole My ATV's" furry.
Seriously, keep him in a 2-deep zone or at the line, no more man coverage please!!

HEADLINES: Duckett the new LT !!
In Week 7 the 2-4 Redskins showed up with a new look in the defense. Third QB, JC played in Rogers spot at CB and caught two interceptions while unused RB (Duckett) sacked Manning six times and caused two fumbles each of which is picked up and ran for a TD.
:)
Posted by: Franky Four Fingers | October 16, 2006 1:08 PM
I knew there was going to be a qb yesterday that telegraphed his throws. Didn't look off db's. Threw costly interceptions and limited the play calling of his O coordinator. I just thought his name would be Vince Young.
I can accept a player on our defense 8 yards downfield cutting out a 180lb running backs legs instead of form tacking him and wrapping up. I just can't accept that that player is our Middle Linebacker and not a db.
dc, for those reasons and many more I can barely speak today. I was booing as loud as I could. Not because I am no longer a Redskins fan or because I take any delight in doing so. I boo'd because that's what the team deserved and maybe those boos will help them.

WHY
IS
FROST
STILL
HERE?
Any donkey that ever played soccer/football can punt the ball 35 yds. And its not like he's good at making spot/directional kicks. When the skins had to kick from the Titans 35 yd line in the 4th, Frost kicked it 19 yds to the 18...WTF?
Posted by: DC Luv | October 16, 2006 1:12 PM
Nope, not going to point the finger at 21/36. Point it elsewhere, JPeso. He's the best we got.
Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | October 16, 2006 1:16 PM
Maybe Vincent can help. Couldn't be any worse. Any word on whether they've talked to Sauerbraun. He may be an idiot for taking ephedra after having already being suspended for steroids, but he's still a helluva punter.
Posted by: skinswest | October 16, 2006 1:18 PM
GAtorskin - you bring a good point and it shows how our personnel department does not understand its job. we sign people that don't fit our scheme. Trotter was and is a beast in the Eagles scheme. in the Skins scheme, he did not fit. the same question will come for Carter and Lloyd. Both can play, but are we using them right? Carter weighs 265, but goes head to head with 300 lb tackles. he's going to lose everytime. Why Lloyd only has 5 or 6 catches is beyond me.
Posted by: robgreg | October 16, 2006 1:19 PM
Joe, not wanting to point the finger and realizing he is underperfoming are two different things. You're right, he is the best we got, AND he is part of the problem. He is a complete liability in coverage, has forced one fumble this year, is terrible at blitzing and his biggest hits come after the runners momentum has been stopped or the receiver has already scored (Jax). I wish he didn't disappear for games at a time, but wishing don't make it so. Go Skins!
Posted by: JPeso | October 16, 2006 1:28 PM
get the feeling it is a mental thing. People get paid big $$ and believe they are Super Bowl bound. Coaches & Players. The believe in their systems, so Arrington, Smoot, Pierce, etc can depart. No depth is the result. Pay big bucks to ? talent. No chemistry is the result.
The big issue is CG, even more then the DB's. When he is at his healthy best, the defense is very different. When he is limited or out, there is no one on the line that penetrates, the needs constant double teams. Carter was supposed to be the 2, as in 1-2 punch. Not happening.
Young players like Rogers and Taylor are getting schooled -- Rogers I get, Taylor has been at it long enough.
On offense, it is time to start JC. Brunell would be an excellent backup. He is the type who can bring a team back, he doesn't need tons of practice (witness the Jax week) and he does need to be healthy. All of which says he can be effective part time.
Posted by: AL | October 16, 2006 1:32 PM
RobGreg,
The problem is not that Carter is 265. Strahan is 255, Kearse is 265, lots of pass-rushers are light in that manner. The issue with Lloyd is that Brunnel wont throw him the ball. We need to go back to the Jacksonville game, and use that game plan. Throw the ball to everybody. Right now, we're way too predictable, and thats because of the play calling.
Posted by: Greg(Boston) | October 16, 2006 1:32 PM
I'll echo DC's comment
WHY
IS
FROST
STILL
HERE?
Vincent may help the defense a little bit, but it's too late to spend money on this season if you ask me.
Good or bad, Campbell needs to start some games so we know if he's our QB of the future, or if we need to go QB shopping. Brunell and Collins will be retiring soon, and that leaves us with Campbell. We have to find out what we have there with Campbell and we won't know until he plays!!
Posted by: Max | October 16, 2006 1:33 PM
The defense is paying for the mistakes of the front office. Archuleta was a terrible signing. And there is simply no depth on the defensive roster at all. I suspect things will turn around and fast when the whole starting unit is healthy.
On offense, no team is wasting more weapons. If your qb has no confidence to throw the intermediate routes, then you are pretty much screwed if you don't generate solid yards on first down. That is why the skins have so many three and outs. Brunell is counting on receivers breaking tackles to make first downs -- instead of throwing to them ten yards deep. Every d coordinator in the league can see this. Saunders offense will never be a consistent force until he gets a qb in there who can make all the throws. Sitting in the stands, I can see that Randle El and Lloyd are consistently open -- MB just can't get them the ball. Saunders must be going crazy.
Posted by: Kyle | October 16, 2006 1:36 PM
Don't be surprised kids, this Titan(tic) loss is typical of the Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Snyd(erman) Redskins. If you change the offense every year since 2000, we will never have the continuity of offense no matter how many talented players we bring in......I wish it were different too!
Posted by: Bob-Ashburn, VA. | October 16, 2006 1:38 PM
From ESPNs 5 Burning Questions....
3. What's wrong with the Redskins?
Allen: The problem with the Redskins is at the quarterback position . They aren't getting any consistency at all right now from Mark Brunell. They don't know what they are going to get from Brunell. Some days, he can complete 20 passes in a row and then there are other days when he's lucky to string together four completions in a row. He has to do a better job giving this team a consistent performance. Right now, he's only hurting Washington with his up-and-down play.
Salisbury: The Redskins' problem is on the defensive side of the football. They don't seem to be executing their schemes every down. The game against Tennessee was a game in which the defense should've been salivating and looking for an opportunity to put up some great numbers in terms of sacks and interceptions. Instead, the Skins just kind of sat around and didn't play with the fire you should see out of a team this good. The Redskins have to sit down and look in the mirror and see whether they have what it takes to be a playoff squad.
Theismann: The Redskins don't seem to have a good mix of offensive personnel outside of Clinton Portis. They have a bunch of receivers who are the same type of player. They need a big, dominant player who can take over in the red zone because right now the short passes aren't getting the job done inside the 20. They have to get a guy who can go and attack the ball over a defender because teams are killing them in the red zone. They also need to get better production from Brunell. He does a great job at times, but there are times when his decisions are hurried and he makes poor throws for no reasons.
Posted by: 4th Floor | October 16, 2006 1:41 PM
I agree with Kyle. I watch the receivers constantly at the home games, and Lloyd or Randle El are open constantly on intermediate or deep routes. The one that has been open most is the Lloyd seam route down the middle of the field. Brunell finally saw that and hit him for a 50 yard pass. That same play has been open all year and Brunell finally threw it in game 6.
Posted by: Max | October 16, 2006 1:41 PM
I respect and love Gibbs, but this "its all of us" crap needs to be stopped I doubt he even beleives it. Sure everyone is making mistakes, but some guys are more consistent in making them and make bigger ones. Who you ask?
First on my chopping block Good Ole' #57 Warrick Holdman
1) The left side of the D was soft against the run and got bitten by the but back last year until he was pulled from the lineup then improved...hmmm
1a) If Lavar is better at following an assignment and run coverage than you...quit the game now.
2) Rocky Macintosh was drafted becasue the team knew Warrick was not the long term solution there
3) To the whole defense as well: YOU DO NOT TACKLE A NFL RUNNING BACK BY THE SHOULDER PADS OR BY JUST HITTING HIM!!!! Warrick is one of the worst offenders or poor tackling, hitting high, not wrapping etc.
So Coach Joe...there is one guy you need to replace hopefully that can help you see your way out of the all of us BS and make some changes

X.Hog, that tube was a treat-- butt pudding, kidney juice, Ralph & Chuck begin to ralph & chuck.
JPeso, ST is having to play LB and corner ( not too good on corner), for our D of morons. As previously posted, he finishes out his rookie deal this year. We can't let him leave.
Sp teams, it's not a turd, it's a fumble. Pick it up.
JMan, goofballs should have sent the jet up last week. Even if Vincent couldn't play, I think it would have scratched at the morale of the DB crew.
Why was Jimoh in on corner coverage for that 5 yard slant??

Posted by: Chief Clancy Wiggum | October 16, 2006 1:51 PM
I don't think Brunell is capable of overthrowing a receiver on a deep route. Seems like the ball is always 5 yards underthrown, thereby forcing the receivers to play defense just to prevent interceptions. When Gibbs brought Campbell in, he said he throws a great deep ball. Campbell also showed a much quicker release than Brunell in the pre-season. I just wish I had some NFL stats to compare with Brunell's but we won't have those until Campbell plays.

REDSKINS, WHY DO YOU BREAK JOHN FROM HERNDON'S HEART!?!
Posted by: JPeso | October 16, 2006 1:56 PM
Much truth in the Seinfeld episodes. There is one where George, the perennial loser, decides to do everything the opposite of his natural inclinations and discovers that he is suddenly successful. This is what the Skins (Dan Snyder)must do! It is natural as rain for the Skins to sign Vincent right now and believe he will be "the final piece." Do the opposite!!!!!
Posted by: James | October 16, 2006 1:56 PM
You're taking this all too seriously.
The redskins are the most successful franchise in all of pro sports. I mean, all over the world. Look at how much money they bring in the owner! If I was Dan Snyder, that's what I'd care about most. How much did I make last year from the Redskins?
You guys realize that bringing in Gibbs was a ploy to mollify fans, right? I mean, as long as people keep showing up at the stadium, there is really no incentive to win. People were threatening to leave because of years of being a loser. Now Saint Joe comes in, they make the playoffs as a wild card last year, get knocked out. Ho hum.
Just realize this is the same level of on-field success as the Redskins had with Norv Turner.
...and before anyone points to Joe Gibbs winning the superbowl in the past, keep in mind those were before over the half the fan base was even born. Might as well talk about what a great president JFK was.
Posted by: Bunkley | October 16, 2006 2:00 PM
Snyder, don't spend any more $$$ on this season. Troy vincent is old - and he will perform just like D. Sanders did when we signed him at age 65.
Posted by: Max | October 16, 2006 2:00 PM
Well, I will step in on this issue with 21/36/Hut-Hut-Hike matter. JPeso - Sean Taylor is the least of our defensive problems. He does his best to cover, but in the end, he's only one man. I mean, look who we have in the corners - The Jackal, Two-Wrongs, SpeedBumph, and a host of other no-names and done-nothings that frankly haven't done much to get out of that status. Basically, after about 10 yards, it's all up to Herr Reaper.
He's not getting any help from his fellow safety, either. Archuleta must be busy mentally fumbling through his playground physics at the start of every play, just to figure out what pursuit angle he should be taking to hit the guy he should have been watching in the first place. I can't explain why he hasn't to really bother covering, otherwise. And lets not start talking about Warrick 'Leaky Sieve' Holdman....
Posted by: FlimFlam | October 16, 2006 2:00 PM
I'm disappointed. I was hoping Joe Gibbs would do the upstanding thing and relieve himself of head coaching duties after the game...or at least show some fire...but then I realized I was wrong. Gibbs made a great point, something that had eluded me the past two and a half years..."we are all in this together." To be quite honest, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I never realized the team was in this all together until Gibbs elucidated that idea for me. (Nice thesaurus word, huh MegSkin?) It's funny, everyone got on my case for dogging Gibbs, Brunell, and Greg(g), but now it seems as if alot of people agree. It would have been nice to hear someone ask during the post-game news conference: "Hey Joe, how come this team has no heart? What exactly is your role if you can't even inspire them?" But instead, we have hacks in the press room that only ask softball questions...only to hear "we are all in this together" in response. Joe Gibbs has got to go. Just because he was successful 14(!!!!!) years ago doesn't mean he is guaranteed to be successful now.
Posted by: Skins Fan 202 | October 16, 2006 2:01 PM
can we insitiute a moratorium on the following phrases from Gibb's press conferences?:
" I really can't comment until I see the tape"
"Fought their guts out"
"played as hard as they could"
"All starts with me"
"the good thing about this loss is we're all in it together"
"it's all across the board"
"feel sorry for the fans and our owner"
"Mark showed some things out there"
"we called for some deep passes in there"
"great character guys in this locker room"
"it's just one play here and one play there"
"go back to the drawing board"

How do you cure a achey-breaky heart?
Coach Gibbs' relationship with the fans can be summarized in Meatloaf's famous song, "I will do anything for love but I won't do that..." He'll do anything for the fans but he won't pull Brunell!!

Holdman needs to be cut this week. Send a damn message to the team. If you don't perform, we don't need you!!!
Posted by: Max | October 16, 2006 2:03 PM
Biggest Personel Loss of the season:
Pearson Prilou (or however you spell his name)
Now that you have stopped laughing....seriously. A majority of the nickle packages last year were 2CB 3S sets with him in there, he has the speed and skill to cover like a corner and was also the way to use Archuletta in situations or packages set-up for his hitting instead of as an every down jack of all trades which he is not doing well with. Finally Williams has faith in him and would blitz him or leave him on an island to get a blitz called.
So for those of you like me who were relieved it was not a "real starter" who got hurt on the first play...maybe we should think that over!
Posted by: Sec 126 | October 16, 2006 2:03 PM
well i think for the first time gibbs "it was all of us" speach actually holds water...its was everyone yesterday...
unfortunately we cant afford any more team let downs...indy is a must win now...
actually i guess its not...i figure if we can somehow manage to get to 4-5 we arent any worse off that 5-6 last year...which means we need to win 2 of the next 3...indy, the boys and the eagles...and if yoiu think about it...which would be the best to lose? next week at indy would be the least damaging...but i cant see how we could lose that, go to 2-5 and have any chance whatsoever...but somehow if we can wind up at 4-5...maybe...
at least its not a brunnel lynching...
he didnt lose the game...that was the whole team...primarily the defense...but the whole team...he certainly could have won it with a couple better passes...i dont know what was up with that interception...but this game never should have got to the point where we needed anything more out of brunnel...
and for once i dont put this on the coaches for bad game planning...it was the players...but all of them...and in that case...that must be bad coaching one way or another...the team was not prepared...they were not up for the game...they did not play 60 mins...
this season isnt over yet...but its about there...and just knowing the history of being a sports fan of DC teams...you just know they are going to hang around the bubble long enough to keep our hopes up every weekend, drive us mental every week and break our hearts int the end...

Andre Carter is really annoying with all his "I played my most physical game of the year" type-comments every week. He has a supremely false sense of confidence.
He may be well-conditioned and a physical specimen, but he's also a specimen of another kind. The kind that comes out of my butt.
Brunell may be a swell guy, but his gonads are shrunken-up. Every time there's even a hint of a pass rush, he starts flinching and throws way off target. Jason Campbell would produce more yds passing and probably more int's, but it'll probably be a wash at the end of the day, so why not get the yound guy some experience.
Saunders does not feel confident in Brunell, so he has to call all these dump-offs. It's not his fault that he's saddled with a crappy QB. He's actually doing the best he can with the players he has.
Overall the front office is responsible for this mess. Horrible QB and over-paid free agents mean that we have no young pass rushers, no depth at CB, and a very undersized LB crew.

redskins.com reports that the team just signed Vincent.
Super Bowl, here we come!
Posted by: P Diddy | October 16, 2006 2:10 PM
I read this blog all the time, but this is the first time I've posted. I just want to echo the sentiments about Brunell NEVER passing to Lloyd. I give credit to Brandon for keeping the company line after the games and stating that he's only doing what he's told, but for the love, if Lloyd got the ball half the time when he was open, he'd be one of the top receivers in the league. JLC, I'm interested to know, is there any grumbling amongst the offensive players about Brunell or Saunder's play calling?
Also, someone said earlier that Holdman is the worst linebacker in the NFC East. I completely agree. Henry pushed him over numerous times (we're talking about a back that is five feet eight in cleats) including on that all important touchdown run. Why do we draft a linebacker that we think is the complete, three down answer Lavar never could be, if he's going to be relegated to special teams because Williams hates to play rookies?
Can anyone give me something positive about the Redskins current situation? With all the draft picks gone and the defense in serious decline, how does this get better?

Q: Who is the safety that got burnt on like the second play of the super bowl, who the Redskins signed the next offseason to a big contract and was labeled their savior at safety.
A: Stanley Richard
Good times. Although I was depressed after the game yesterday, reading this blog makes me feel better for some reason. Tray Vincent is past his prime, but he was a good player and defintely can cover better than Kenny Wright. I missed the start of the game, why was Wright chosen to suit-up ahead of Rumph. I mean, neither are Deon Sanders, but Rumph has at least made a play or two this year.

I'm stuck with this Groundhog Day-esque loop in my head of the locker room scene from the Natural.
"Losing is a disease...
..as contagious as polio.
Losing is a disease...
..as contagious as syphilis
Losing is a disease...
..as contagious as bubonic plague...
... attacking one...
... but infecting all.
But curable.
Now, I want you to imagine...
...you are on a ship at sea...
...on a vast...
...gently rocking.
Gently rocking.
Gently rocking.
Gently rocking."
Which is just how I wind up after too many Skins games these last few years. In a darkened room, gently rocking, empty bottle of gin by my side. Yet somehow as the week goes on, Hope rears it's treacherous head again, and by gametime I'm full of irrational exuberance and beer. Even as I spend this gloomy Monday staring dully at my monitor through red, puffy eyelids, blearily answering jabs from over the cube wall with a tongue thickened by the taste of bile, I know that by kickoff I'll be in full voice again, infused with a Snyder given sense of invincibility and entitlement. And I know you'll be there with me, one Redskins nation, under Gibbs, with screen passes and draw plays for all. Brothers and sisters in arms, swathed in burgandy and gold tribute our gridiron avatars, spirits soaring with each snap of the ball, only to once again plummet back to earth like Icarus as our last chance pass flutters ignominiously to the ground. So until next week, please pass me the kool-aid. And an aspirin.

Funny line above about Vinny sending a 5th rounder just for us to look at Vincent. It might be true IF we have a 5th round pick left to give away.

Does anyone know the terms of the deal?

At least, after the game yesterday, Gibbs doesn't sit in the press conference and say that "we just need to coach 'em up" and "toss the ball around a little more."

Jason,
Do us all a huge favor and ask Gibbs or Saunders the following:
Why does Brunell keep forcing the ball to Moss, or throwing dump offs, when Lloyd and Randle-El are CONSISTENTLY WIDE OPEN?
Is it because Mark doesn't see the field well anymore? Or because he just lacks the confidence in his ability to throw the intermediate routes?
Posted by: Kyle | October 16, 2006 2:23 PM
Deadskin,
It's over. They are not good enough. It's time to see what Campbell can do.

Kyle, PREACH IT Brother.
Posted by: Greg(Boston) | October 16, 2006 2:29 PM
One problem with Brunell is that he takes a huge drop when he is gonig back for a pass. This makes it tougher for the ends on the line to block the pass rush. It takes Brunell right out of the pocket and also gives him a longer distance to throw the ball. Which with his arm strength is not to good.
Posted by: dc | October 16, 2006 2:34 PM
woohoo! Vincent and Brunell can swap stories about the days before electicity and fancy motorcoachess taking you to the games.
Posted by: pjhalifax | October 16, 2006 2:36 PM
Yep, dc. Brunell drops so far back I feel like I'm watching someone play Tecmo Bowl. Except instead of dropping 30 yards and throwing a bomb, Brunell drops back 30 and throws a screen pass.
Posted by: Kyle | October 16, 2006 2:37 PM
How come we always sign ppl when they are left for dead by their previous teams?
Why do we trade up for ppl who nobody wanted to pick in that high in first place like Campbell and McIntosh?
Why do you think that Denver repeatedly executes trades with the Redskins? Is it because they received the better part of the transaction every time?
Our front office is full of idiots. Gibbs never was able to evaluate talent before, and now he has final say. It's a sad situation

In a small dark damp space in the back of my mind I believe the redskins are the greatest team in the NFL, and there is hope. Then with out warning the other 99.99% of my mind laughs at those thoughts reminding myself I was thinking of the 91' season. These thoughts are from a concussion I had back then that keeps hope constantly alive. Then I read from some posters on here who obviously had a similiar concussion and truly believe we can beat Indy at Indy coming of a bye and criticism that their offense isnt what it was last year.
We played the Giants at home after a bye with people criticizing their defense. They hurt us, physically and mentally. I truly thought we would roll over tennessee. I now have to question, was that my 91' concussion talking again or my present day mind? I know that my present day mind feels that we are in for a real whoopin next Sun. Leaving us at 2-5 going into the bye week. If this is the case, we will be one loss away from our total last year. And I feel like running my head through a brick wall in hpes that I will live out the rest of this season in a true state of dimentia. When I am in that wonderful place I will post how our season is going and let all of the Redskins faithful know without a doubt we will win the SuperBowl!!!
Hail Mark Rypien!!!! Hail the Skins!!!

Troy Vincent is 35 years old. That is hardly the help we need in the secondary. Too little too late is a complete understatement.
The old guy to sign that would actually help this team is Landetta--Why the F is Frost still collecting an NFL paycheck. It is a disgrace.
In a close game how does Portis only have 50 some yards rushing. Feed him the ball, he is clearly the best player on the team.
PLAY CAMPBELL NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If this year is lost let's at least get ready for 2007.

During the 49ers/Chargers game yesterday CBS ran a quick in between plays spot on Norv Turner and what a great influence on young QBs he is. They were trying to use past examples of young QBs to illustrate how Alex Smith is "destined" to become a standout QB in the NFL.
What names were used as examples you ask?
In order: Troy Aikman, Heath Shuler, Gus Frerotte, and Drew Brees.
Whoever puts together these things for CBS either is completely out of touch with reality or has a great sense of humor. I can't figure out which.

Jason----any truth to JC not able to pick up and understand the offense. There must be a reason. Please do not tell us he is as dumb as Michael Westbrook. The team is sputtering, almost lifeless. No enthusiasm, no fear of losing your job. Send a message, make a change, stir it up, piss off someone, something, anything. By the way, would it kill Gibbs to just lose his cool, and go ape on anyone within earshot, just once. If a team relects the disposition of their leader, then we look either constipated or near dispair.

Skinz: Normally, I would have laughed outloud (ArtMonkToTheSticks Notation: dudes that type 'lol' should not be able to eat lunch. Type it all you want, but no lunch for you chieftan). But today is a day of depression and remorse.
I ask all of you (except 202 because you're like Canadian currency, different and maybe valuable, just not here) the following question:
Are we being tested? Is this a test? What if it has to get so bad to see who sticks it out? Will it be that much better once we win one of these little shabingi (plural of shabingus)?
Also, notation about my whipping boy, Archu-deetoo. I read an ESPN the Mag article about him when he first came into the league. Phenomenal workout warrior and so forth. Did you know the dude refuses to do ANY agility drills? Like 0. He has the new age trainer guy and he only deadlifts stuff. Weird for a guy that needs quickness huh? I know everyone is tired of me saying this but that will go down as the worst signing since The Wizards introduced 'center of the future' Ike Austin. Yeah, I brought up the Wizards. That is how weird it is right now.
I'm on the Wizards blog too with a different name and everything. But now that the Redkins have chanted 'nivum-Shiva' and the dude from Temple of Doom has stopped by my place in Glover Park to take my heart out of chest and hold my still beating organ aloft as hundreds of pigmies shoot blow darts at it as they dance to the fight song that the eagles made up in 1992, I'm feeling a bit empty and strange.
2-5 going into the bye week dudes and Megskin. It is a very real possibility. I just ate my own eyebrows.
Last note: I went to a meeting this morning. I am the lowest dude on the pole by a lot. I am staring into space just distraught with my thoughts of wholdman.edu and acarter.org just getting abused, and one of my superiors snaps me back to reality by repeating a question. Everyone is staring at me. I did not hear the question but I go: 'Let me check'. I get up and leave the room and do not return. That is what the Redskins have done to me this year.
Out.

I look through the college stats periodically and I consistently see punters who average 45 yards or more per punt. Some of these guys had to graduate last year, right?? I don't think punting in the NFL is too much different than punting in college, correct me if I'm wrong.
Wow, has it really gotten this bad that the best we can do is hope for a punter who can get it out there 10-20 yards further. This is bad... really... really bad.

Section 126--I think you are right. I think losing PP was a huge blow to this secondary. I think he was a pretty good cover safety, as strange as that is to say/write. Losing springs AND our nickel back was a bigger loss than many, myself included, bargained for at first. Maybe all the criticism being directed towards Grilliams is somewhat unwarranted. At least his D has held opponents to low enough totals that we have had a chance in every game. Without Griffin we have never been able to stop the run and our corners, since springs went down, have been horrendous--that's a tough formula to work with as a D-co. Imagine if you knew going into this year that WRight and Rogers would be the corners with Rumph as the nickel back....would expectations really have been so high??? Our secondary is just bad.
Posted by: WrongDog | October 16, 2006 3:36 PM

Troy Vincent is coming in for 1 of 2 reasons. 1)His name is recognizable, which translates into interest, which translates in to money for Danny. 2)Mark Brunnell needs someone else on the team to understand his A-Team and Miami Vice references.
For as much as Snyder wanted to be Jerry Jones, he has turned out to be more like Al Davis with his team management skills. I wonder how long until people are asking the question "What is more likely, the Cardinals going 16-0 or the Redskins going 0-16?" Might be next year?
For the long time Redskins fans- Please don't think that Gibbs has any decision making power. Snyder brought in Saunders for some razzle dazzle. Bringing in Gibbs was just another of Danny over-priced off-season aquisitions to keep interest in the Skins and keep butts in the seats. Think back to the season before Gibbs came back??? How many of you were ready to throw in the towel on the Snyder Skins??? And then, as if a light from heaven GIBBS IS COMING BACK! Merchandise started selling again. The ticket waiting list went from 5 months back to 10 years. Danny got richer. We got suckered again.

Can't wait until this season is over so we can get to the best part of the year for the skins: Free Agency. We are the superbowl champions of free agency. Maybe Gibbs, gwilliams and snyder should reconsider the strategy to pick up players through free agency rather than the draft. Most of the time you get underacheiving, old and/or injury prone players. That's why they are in free agency in the first place.

Honestly, if I were Gibbs and I had to come out there week in and week out and diplomatically say "we suck" and "I'm responsible," There would be heads rollin' in the locker room! It's time to start throwing stuff Joe!
Posted by: Max | October 16, 2006 4:34 PM
Max, that is the truth. And the players should be humiliated that Gibbs has to go out there and take the blame and talk all that nonsense on their behalf.
Side note: did anyone see Lamont Jordan on the sideline after his fumble last night? Talk about a dude that hates losing -- you could tell it was killing him. I wonder how many Redskins have that kind of intensity.
Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | October 16, 2006 4:41 PM
220, i think you and all of us who're crying for brunell's head knows that it's not all brunell's fault. i hope people who're defending brunell know that.
we DEMAND a sacrifice from st. Joe. this game NEEDS a sacrifice. if he means what he says then he has to do this deed! i know it'll hurt him but the skinsfans are demanding this from him.
yes, he was right about ramsey and so was spurrier. it was cerrato and snyder who pushed ramsey down spurrier's throat. let's move on. please. coach, we won't hold anything against you. you're a HOF coach and you'll always be one. do it for us coach....hire a gm! start calling the falcon's GM, start tempering with him, everyone does it! pay him 50 mil a year get him here! that's all we ask!

Ok, folks....here's his official website:
I'm going to keep my opinions to myself, but make sure to click on the "Troy Illustrated" picture on the left so you can read on the "Troy Berry" that "his children refer to him simply as Daddy"
Hmmmmm, not sure what to make of this. What do you guys/ladies think?

Back from work. Updated NFC East QB stats through Week 6:
yards per completion
McNabb: 15.1
Bledsoe: 12.6
Brunell: 11.8
Manning: 11.5
TD's
McNabb: 13
Manning: 11 (through 5)
Bledsoe: 7 (through 5)
Brunell: 5
INT's
McNabb: 2
Brunell: 3
Manning: 7 (through 5)
Bledsoe: 7 (through 5)
Rushing:
McNabb: 15/115
Bledsoe: 12/87 (through 5)
Manning: 11/79 (through 5)
Brunell: 9/68
Completion %
Manning: 65.3
Brunell: 62.1
McNabb: 58.7
Bledsoe: 52.9
Passer Rating:
McNabb: 104.8
Manning: 92.3 (through 5)
Brunell: 86.9
Bledsoe: 70.4 (through 5)
Actually, Brunell doesn't look quite as bad as we would make him out to be. But I guess the real thing to be thankful for is that we don't have Bledsoe under center.
Nevertheless, if he isn't going to lead us to the Super Bowl this year, then what's the point?

Skinz: The Gov is off the reservation right at this time. He told me that he can't post until after the bye week because he is so hurt right now. He is also married...I'm not judging that, just saying it can be hard on dude when she pushes the button on the remote and that little buzzer that got implanted in his cerrabellum starts sending those electronic impulses to get up from the couch and take the volkswagon down to Restoration Hardware to exchange a few things...

You are right I not it's all Brunell fault. But hell if he is not going to be the starter next year. (let's pray that he is not) It's hard at this point to say he is getting us to the SB this year. Let's take the bumps for the remainer of this year and have hope next year. Then to continue with Brunell and not get anywhere and have to throw out next year as JC get real game time.

Realist, I'm with you. The only thought I had about the Spurrier year (was it more than one?) was how great it would be if we could just fire $nyder. I'm from Cleveland. We had Art Modell. Someone in an earlier post praised Modell's wisdom. I just thought about whether $nyder might just pack up the whole show and move it to L.A. where he can REALLY focus his media empire-building. The Sports Merchanding Complex has nothing on the Defense Military Complex, esp. with $nyder at the wheel.
Someone responded to my fan loyalty post by defending (and admitting to) their booing of the Skins on Sunday because they paid for it and thus deserved the right to boo "their" team. Their evidence of ownership was about how much money they spend on the merchandise, including the jerseys. Does it occur to anybody that, right after they bought the LaVar jersey (or Pierce, or Smoot, or Stephen Davis, etc.), they get cut ... and its time to buy a new jersey? We feed this beast. $nyder is a pioneer in sucking out dimes ... $25 to park at the "free" preseason practice sessions.
With that off-loaded, and aside from the Gibbs hiring being to focus attention away from the Owner (whose image was hurting the brand, and thus revenues), I do think the Gibbs still knows how to and desperately wants to win football games. He knows about money and merchandising too (hell, he has his own NASCAR syndicate), but I refuse to believe that he would risk his HoF glory if he didn't think he could get back the rush of winning football games.
Jason question (and this one is also for all those amateur GMs who post here): If Vincent's contract is for 6 years, that would mean he would be 41 by the end of the contract. Nobody can be serious about that. Is that length of contract just for salary cap management purposes when he is done playing? How does that work?
Posted by: dcsween | October 16, 2006 4:54 PM
he's comparing this year to his first year 2004
not getting TO's
blaming the defense (not being able to stop the rushing )
"we're all in this together..." not what you just said...but since you're st. joe...we believe you.
"we had a good practice last week"
"hard work...hard work..."
"i feel bad obviously for our fans"
"yesterday, we couldn't make enough plays"
"very very bright sharp guy...super bright" talking about Vincent
Posted by: dealer | October 16, 2006 4:57 PM
Actually, that rushing stat is wrong. I misread it. It's actually:
Sacks/Yards lost
McNabb: 15/115
Bledsoe: 12/87 (through 5)
Manning: 11/79 (through 5)
Brunell: 9/68
Brunell wins that category.
Rushing:
McNabb: 17/87
Bledsoe: 7/27 (through 5)
Brunell: 9/25
Manning: 5/6 (through 5)
Bledsoe's outrushing Brunell...with one fewer game played...ouch!!

Troy has always been a smart, decent guy to deal with on NFLPA matters. With five kids, though, no wonder he owns a spa! Maybe he can give the Skins gift certificates. Maybe they just need to relax a little. Kick back, have a seaweed wrap. I think Tennessee took care of exfoliating them.

Dude, you can blame whatever you want on Snyder and call him names or whatever. I don't care. But the guy loves the Washington Redskins. Give him that. There are a lot of owners that would be enticed by a move to L.A. but Snyder is not one of them.
Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | October 16, 2006 5:04 PM
I could really use a massage right now. I'm carrying a lot of stress in my shoulders and lower back. I would love to blame my out of whack work-life balance, but my posts on this blog pretty much blow that theory out of the water.
So, I'll just come out and admit it. I'm still not recovered from drinking heavily on Friday night with those over-starched, pinstriped lawyer-types in DC. The ol' liver isn't as effective as it used to be. It continues to give an inconsistent performance. I feel like my fans deserve more. Up here, anyone can out-drink anyone. But I'm simply not drinking well right now. If it were just my liver, I would replace it. But it's a team effort. It's all of us: my liver, my heart, my head. We just have to find a way to pull out of it.
Pray for me.

I'd share my liver with Diddy - unfortunately, I tolerate alcohol about as well as any other glass of water, so it might not be helpful, if he insists on going on the binge again.
And yes - those Gibbisms are starting to make me a bit annoyed too. As to his purported change to the offense, it'll probably be something on the order of changing the cheese in the cafeteria from cheddar to Stilton, so that the smell of the player flatuence will be more potent.....

Diddy can have my spare liver once it's done charging (it's plugged in now). I needed it last week in London -- the two pint lunches followed by two pints before dinner followed by mixed drinks late at night were a killer.
Glad to hear Troy Vincent is a decent guy. From what I understand, Duckett is too -- hopefully TV will get more PT than TJ.
I wonder if we can get weekly updates on the Troy Berry.

disappointed take a step back. Trade CP? I am just as upset as you my friend. But that is just going a little too far. CP has been very productive since he came to Washington. That's one trade that has paid off.

Similar vein: why is it that every coach in the League calls a draw on 2nd and long?
Posted by: P Diddy | October 16, 2006 5:32 PM
What other quality players do we have to get high draft picks? CP is our only road back to respectability in the league.
The 'Skins are the laughing stock of the NFL. Players only come here for a paycheck.
Posted by: disappointed | October 16, 2006 5:34 PM
dealer,
Last I checked, Ashburn is in the middle of nowhere in some suburb. I don't do suburbs and will stick to the pub crawl. As a matter of fact, I couldn't tell if my shortness of breath, itchy skin, and sore throat was an allergic reaction to the Maryland suburbs or to the 'Skins performance.
Regardless, I would love you guys to go to Ashburn and protest, though. That would make for some great copy. Almost as funny as those silly people who walked out of an Orioles game.

I bet we could get someone to swap first round picks with us for Duckett. Wasn't it PT Barnum who said "No one has ever gone broke underestimating the stupidity of NFL general managers"?
You could always trade Moss.
Or Archuleta.
Just don't trade Cooley or I'll stop watching games altogether.
Posted by: P Diddy | October 16, 2006 5:40 PM
Is Rogers playing in Indy?
Posted by: disappointed | October 16, 2006 5:41 PM
Sit Holdman and Brunell next to each other on the bench and start McIntosh and Campbell. There is no upside to keeping aging non-performers. Brunell's stats are not bad, but they are skewed by the 2 wins, when HE is the primary culprit in every game, with the exception of Dallas. Think of the 4, 4th qtr posessions that ended with him either throwing the slant in into the ground, throwing the sq outs OB to Moss and Lloyd, and the INT. He also missed Cooley and Moss deep for TDs. Anyone can play us with 9 in the box to stop the run and cover the screens. Without a deep game because the QB seldom even looks deep, we are predictable and easy to stop.
The formula to beat the D is to run left where Carter is overmatched and Holdman, Archeletta, and Rogers cannot tackle or cover.
I don't know what practices are like this time around with Joe, but in the JG 1 era, practices were very physical and intense. I just don't see it translated on the field anymore.

If u were really a comic, or any good at it, u wouldnt have had to throw in the "which is ironic" comment. the lame attempt at irony was pretty obvious to begin with, so either u suck, or u think everyone on this board isn't smart enough to figure out something so simple and trite.
