Redskins Insider, by Jason La Canfora Redskins Insider

Award Time

1 TCCL - Skins Defense. Won't stop falling 'til they're ranked dead-last in the NFL?

1 TCCL - US Soccer Federation. Another international match day passes without a friendly or national team training camp. Who needs a stinking coach, anyway?

1 TCCL - Rotating quarterbacks. Redskins are taking this to an art form. 17 since 1993 with a 74 collective passer rating. Team's record 93-123-1 since JJG left.

2 TCCL - TomKat wedding. Could it possibly last as long as Fed-Ex? Wonder if The Snyder will try to sell some Redskins gear from the back of his limo in Rome.

3 TCCL - Emmitt Smith. Wins Dancing With The Stars, but was Mario robbed? My wife was all for Emmitt, since apparently Slater was a pro dancer as a kid or something and should have been disqualified. Whatever.

4 TCCL - T.J. Duckett. Finally gets the ball for the first time in like six weeks, and promptly tears off a 12-yard run. I would have been running my mouth by Week 4, but this dude is a cool cat.

5 TCCL - Jason Campbell. Finally, the kid gets his chance. Something for Redskins fans to be excited about at an otherwise dour time.

Randoms: Thought I would start a new feature and pass along a few obscure album suggestions each week. Stuff like Radiohead, Def Leppard, Wu-Tang, Interpol, Cash, I am going to assume are pretty well knows. I'll try to point out some stuff that might have slipped through the cracks. Anyone who does not own Jeff Buckley "Grace" should. This might be a lil mainstream, but I think it may be the best disc of the 1990s, and, guys, if you don't like it I guarantee your girlie will. Download "Grace," "Last Goodbye" and, "Mojo Pin," "Dream Brother," if you want to ease into it. This dude was going to be a legacy artist - Columbia Records was developing him as a sort of Springsteen for his generation - then he drowned in the Mississippi River just as he was coming into his own and working on his second album.
EPMD "Strictly Business." An unheralded hip-hip classic, with staccato flows, funky beats and probably the best lisp delivery in rap history. Start with "You Gots To Chill" and "Strictly Business" on the download front. For those who prefer the harder stuff, check out New Bomb Turks "Scared Straight." They have other, rougher discs that I prefer, but this is an awesome entry point. Kings of Midwest punk with a rockabilly edge. Saw them at a bowling alley in Detroit once - one of the best shows I have ever attended.

2TCCL to Coach Joe for making the change. (about damn time)
5 TCCL for Campbell first start.

JLa,

Great article on the 3rd quarter...

What in the heck happened to those Joe Gibbs led teams that dominated 3rd quarters because of all the "halftime adjustments"? Isn't that what Coach Joe was known for? Maybe Gibbs and the rest of the space cowboys play patty cake during halftime this go around.

5 TCCLs for Emmitt beating Mario (who is sort of a tool).
1 TCCL for the green satin vest and ultimate warrior arm bands he was sporting.

Average = 3 TCCLs for Emmitt.

Well, we saw what TJ Duckett could do in short yardage situations last week. We could have used him in short yardage the first 8 weeks of the season, but hey why not wait until we are 3-5 to start using the guy you traded away draft picks for?? Could be a good thunder lightning combo with Duckett and Betts in there and with Campbell also a threat to run a two back set with both Duckett and Betts could be a good option to throw off the defense. Plus Betts has 30 receptions so he could motion to the slot and Duckett could shift to tailback. I think we'll see some very nice things out of the offense this weekend. Campbell, Duckett, and Betts will give Saunders plenty of options, not to mention the wide receivers.

Posted by: Max | November 17, 2006 9:08 AM

You know Duckett actually fits the mold of Redskins RB's that have played for Gibbs in the past better than Clinton Portis does. Not to take anything away from Portis, he is just a special running back with game breaking ability. However, I do think we are better off with a healthy L. Betts and TJ Duckett, than a banged up Clinton Portis. Clinton just wasn't himself this year.

Posted by: Max | November 17, 2006 9:14 AM

JLC, I will not argue that the TJ trade was a good thing, but I've held off judgement as to how bad of a trade it was for a while.

It now seems that Portis was quite a bit less healthy than anyone let on during the season, especially after he "re-injured" his shoulder in week one (is injuring a spot that is already injured, but in a new way, considered a "re-injury"... hmmm). Now that we have two very competent runners to fully evaluate for next season, could this "insurance trade" be viewed in a slightly better light? I don't dare suggest it may have been a good thing (losing the 3rd rounder and all that jazz), but he made a trade for insurance, and the collector came. It's just too bad the season may be a waste when we get the payout.

I like to look at this Sunday forward as the start of the 2007 preseason. Let's start evaluating from the coaches side and gelling from the players side.

Can we work on getting Rocky in there as our next fan crusade?

Music: I've held off on entering the music discussion (other than answering and posing trivia questions because I love trivia) thus far, but I wanted to pass along a good recommendation.

I grew up in DC public in the 80s and very early 90s and then moved to Bethesda for high school in the mid 90s. Basically, I started with hip hop, rap and gogo, and then moved towards DMB, jam bands, etc. Throughout my childhood, my dad always quizzed me on DC101 and 94.7 classic rock, so my tastes are very far reaching and pretty much hold no boundaries (except for country; the newer stuff. I like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, etc.).

In the last few years, I have included the punk, EMO, etc. genres into my collection, mostly because my girlfriend is from the Northwest (Portland). She grew up with it and has a lot of friends that are in bands of varying success.

I want to introduce Alkaline Trio, a great (but probably not obscure if you like punk) band from Chicago. They have been around for a while, and put on some of the best punk shows I have ever been to. Amazing stage presence. I would recommend their self-titled album, From Here to Infirmary or Good Mourning.

Also, Matt Skiba (lead singer of Alkaline Trio) has a very recent side project called Heavens. They just put out an album called Patent Pending, which is extremely good. A very much Cure inspired sound with a tinge of the all too familiar "death analogy" lyrics (hearses, guillotines and such), but a mature leap from some of Skiba's earlier punk stuff. His voice and overall sound have come a long way.

I've actually seen them twice in the last few weeks and they sound amazing live. I highly recommend this album.

Max, keep in mind this is not a Joe Gibbs offense. You can't draw any conclusion by comparing our RBs to the guys Gibbs prefers. Al Saunders' guys look a lot more like Portis than Betts or Duckett...

Faulk 5'10" 211
Holmes 5'9" 213
Portis 5'11" 205 (exagerated height)

Betts 5'10" 223
Duckett 6'0" 254

Then again, Betts seems to have the receiving ability that Saunders requires. But don't think we're better off with this guy. He's a career back-up at best.

"1 TCCL - Skins Defense. Won't stop falling 'til they're ranked dead-last in the NFL?"

for different reasons now . .

at first they couldn't stop anyone and the offense was reduced to sitting on the sideline and watching a game of keepaway.

last couple of games they seem to be stopping folks (minus the 4th qtr eagles drive when the game was over) and giving the ball back to the offense who then promptly goes 3-5 and out.

Last year the defense did a better job of giving the offense more chances to get in gear. clearly we're not there yet. the move to JC tells me that Gibbs does not believe that his defense is going to get a lot better this year so now he's pulling the offense lever.

Lead singer Eric Davidson is now a rock writer here in NYC. I see him at shows all the time. I think he writs for the College Music Journal and occassionally the Villiage Voice..

Whaaaa????

"lil mainstream"??? "girlie" music???

OK, *maybe* a little mainstream compared to some of the more obscure stuff that's out there, but Jeff Buckley definitely had an edge to his music. As beautiful as Jeff's music could be, his music could shred too. No offense to Bruce Springstein, but the more common comparison I've heard is Led Zeppelin.

Grace is a very good album. I personally think Jeff Buckley's at his very best when performing live however. But nonetheless a great recommendation!! Cheers.

5 TCCL - for Art Monk being a semi-finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, once again.

keep in mind this is not a Joe Gibbs offense.

I think how much of this offense is a "Gibbs" offense vs. a "Saunders" offense is up to debate. None of us here know how much influence Gibbs really has in changing, modifying, altering etc. the plays before they go in.

Gibbs used to be great at half-time adjustments, the fact that we are, most likely, the worst third quarter team in the league gives me pause to think: I would like to see one whole game run by Al Saunders, with exactly zero Gibbs input and see what happens.

Unfortunately, I think we have no way of knowing whether or not this has already happened; though I do suspect it hasn't. I have a "fighting my guts out" feeling that the interaction between Gibbs and Saunders is mucking stuff up.

Posted by: Bangbros | November 17, 2006 10:19 AM

I think how much of this offense is a "Gibbs" offense vs. a "Saunders" offense is up to debate

True. But the fact that they've eliminated the H-back role and that we've seen very few plays with Thomas pulling around the corner, suggests to me that Saunders is getting his way 90% of the time.

And I don't but that just because Duckett is the size of Riggo, that he will necessarily be more effective in Al Saunders offense than CP. And the thought that we'd be "better off" with Betts than Kid Bro Sweets is laughable.

OK, blog, you're being kidnapped to 1993

1st Stop: Butthole Surfers/Flaming Lips Charlestown (WV) Racetrack -- Two best American psychedelic acts in the punk and post-punk era (that gained a lot of notoriety). Buttholes are slightly past their prime but still give mesmerising shows, Gibby showering the crowd with shotgun blasts of rock salt, no doubt a relief to many sweating acid trippers. Any of their studio albums are worth hearing, Hairway to Steven and Rembrandt P****horse among the best.

The Flaming Lips are just now establishing their otherworldly pop sound now so familiar to us on their all-time classic Transmissions from the Sattelite Heart, their latest release, but are still playing cuts from their two early psychedelic garage-rock jaw-droppers Hear It Is and Oh My Gawd, the Flaming Lips.

Next stop: 9:30 Club 930 F St: Jesus Lizard. Not for the faint-hearted. Frontman David Yow flings his sweaty and increasingly unclad body around the stage in front of one of the dirtiest guitar tones in history. In a unique feature of the venue, Yow sings, or rather bombasts, while hanging from the crow's nest. All the Lizard's album titles are single four-letter words. The best are Goat, Head, Liar and the live album, Show.

Well, obviously since we have the worst third quarter team in the league, Gibbs is definitely not involved - as no adjustments are being made at half-time.

Just got out of my meeting with "the Bob's" and it's right back to the blog...

MD -23 vs. Michigan State tonight

No spread against the 'Throp just yet, but my sources tell me to expect something near -47 for Maryland.

I also have a prelim. order in for my final 4 tickets... just waiting for my Super Bowl ticket cancellation to be processed before I okay the order.

K Frat, not K Fed, is a wreck. She needs you. Let me know when you'd like to arrange a trip up north. We can stay at my in-laws, where I may or may not jump head first off their roof top.

I have no idea what to think about this Sunday. Saturday is a different story....

After seeing everybody and their mother fall over themselves the last 12 months to gush about the record from Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins, I finally got around to it the other week. I have a soft spot in my musical heart for Americana-tinged alt-country and the like (Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo, not so much Wilco...Farrar >>> Tweedy), and while Lewis's stuff doesn't really fit this mold, it's folksy and country and soulful with some Southern gospel mixed in. I give it a big thumbs up.

Posted by: Wes Mantooth | November 17, 2006 11:51 AM

Yep, the visit to HR was pretty tame anyway. Something about making sure my folks know there's open benefit enrollment, blah, blah, blah.

But nonetheless it's always disconcerting making a visit to Mt. Doom. Especially when Sauron delegates me to his Director of HR who can't stop looking at me like she wants me to be folding towels by her pool in a Speedo.

Under some circumstances that might be ok, but since she is so old she can remember when Brunell had an arm, it just comes off as creepy.

5 TCCL's for bringing up music again

Melvins-fantastically slow stuff, the godfathers of grunge (modern grunge, of course Sabbath was the OG-Original Grungers)

Rites of Spring-great emo D.C. band from the Dischord days

Voivod-technology Metal, very unique band

I second the Jesus Lizard, saw them many a time back in the day

Posted by: Pulldownclaw | November 17, 2006 11:54 AM

My tight jeaned emo roommate in college got me into the Alk-Trio... depressing stuff but otherwise great music... (Traveling friend song is amazing)

Duckett... with my CDL am stepping behind the wheel of the TJ Duckett bandwagon. I will swerve wrecklessly into oncoming traffic if I have to. Nothing is better than running the ball. That is why I fell in love with the Redskins (that and Dallas fans were Bamas so it sort of made sense) I love to run the ball. I love to see smashmouth football. My Madden teams run the ball. RUN RUN RUN. Jason Campbell should throw no more than 17 passes a game (BHelmetless-burger.UMH.edu won a superbowl with that kind of offense.) I'm really excited about the rest of the season. Nothing to lose. Give the ball to Cool Cat Duckett and ride the train to the endzone. Holla.

Posted by: Dorf | November 17, 2006 11:57 AM

When did this blog turn into a music review??

My two biggest fears this weekend:
(1) Jason throws a few deep passes to...Ronde Barber
(2) The Cowboys beat the Colts (horrors!!)

jm - Props on Paid in Full. same to giaquinto on the Butthole Surfers.

I like Jeff Buckley inmModeration, but if I listen too long I start growing boobs. He does a great cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Halleluja'

My all time favorite albumn is Apple by Mother Love Bone...Seattle's finest, baby.

This is completely baseless, but I have this weird, sinking feeling that Clinton will not be a Redskin next year.

Greatest shows I've ever been to:

Grateful Dead... I was only in 9th grade, but as I awoke from my 17th nitris hit that afternoon and some hippee in the RFK parking lot offered me a burger, I realized this might be the greatest day of my life.

Jimmy Buffett... way too many drunken Buffett shows at Merriweather. I've been blacked out for a few, but the greatest could have been listening to "Fins" behind the port-a-pots with a pretty classy chick I happened to meet on the lawn. I guess you could say that I showed her MY fin, pun intended.

RB OUT

I'm scratching my head trying to figure out why the Colts are only laying 1 pt to the Cowgirls this weekend. Is Indy's run defense that bad?

Posted by: Ali Haji Shank | November 17, 2006 12:13 PM

best show i've ever been to: Lollapalooza '92. By no means obscure or underground but the Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, the Violent Femmes, Rage Against the Machine, Ministry, Ice Cube, Cypress Hill, House of Pain, STP, Jesus and Mary Chain and a Freak show! Un-F***ing-real.

Posted by: etrod | November 17, 2006 12:13 PM

J LA,

Nice call on the EPMD. Didn't think you'd be able to drop the knowledge like that, but I should never count out a bawlmore boy. (Columbia, MD - represent).

Although a bit brit/pop punk I caught Lost Prophets at 930 about 2-3 summers ago, and they were awesome. The final song they split the crowd in half, and started a full attendance mosh pit / melee that looked like a deleted scene from Braveheart. It was awesome, and they have some pretty good songs from light to heavy.

Live music is always the way to go, much better insight into the band and their abilities. Probably like postgame interviews with the skins.

I think if your going to mention Erick and Parrish, you have to give a tangent shout out to Sermon's side projects with Keith Murry and Redman - Def Squad and of course Diggidy Das Efx (though I already mentioned them in a previous post).

Although not necessarily in line with the question, if you guys like Journey, there is a great tribute band (Frontier) that plays in Clarendon a lot. I've seen 'em twice, and they do not disappoint.

Posted by: bbtp89854726 | November 17, 2006 12:15 PM

I really hope my namesake rolls into the Hall this year. If we needed 7, he got 8. I don't get how anyone would ever vote against him.

I'm DC, always repping to the death. Go-Go is ours. Northeast Groovers, Rare Essence, Backyard, Petworth Boys... "PA tapes in the back...5 dollah's!"

Ricky Bobby, question for you. I've been to a Buffett show but I went sober (awkward cirumstances; long story). Anyway, I just didn't get it. If you listen to his stuff without 41 adult sodas in you, isn't it kind of boring? Like, listening to the Eagles or something? And we all know the eagles are terrible (AMTTS note: I never realized that I hated the Eagles until 'the Dude' said so in 'The Big Lebowski'. It was like an epiphany.).

Just curious.

You can debate which running back fits into the system better but no matter what, this is a Joe Gibbs team. At least in public, the players have all stated bascially the same message - it's sad to see Mark benched but it'll be exciting to get Jason in there. It seems like most QB changes happen and the players either bash their old QB or the new QB, but on this team the players have been supportive of both. Now I know what Gibbs means when he talks about character players.

Any 2 Skinnee J's fans out there? I saw them twice at the Norva in Norfolk... my all time favorite live music experience. dagnabbit they were good. I won a pair of Jimmy Buffett tickets from DC101 and made an easy $125 selling thems. Oh, and I know Carbon Leaf got some love from the DC radio stations, but they really are a great group. They come to Harrisonburg a couple times a year and really play their guts out.

Horrible pun, RB.

The Dorf abides.

Posted by: Dorf | November 17, 2006 12:35 PM

If you like them, you have to check out a band called Centro-matic. They have been doing amazing things for about 10 years, and are flying completely under the radar. Go to YouTube and check out some clips. Anyone see that Jay Farrar show at Black Cat they other night. Pretty sweet!

I am so pumped to finally see the kid play. No expectations, but excited none the less. It sounds liek the oter 52 guys are too.

Dorf - 2 Skinny J's are pretty awesome live. I saw them at Main Street in Hburg in like 2001, when it was a much "grainier" venue. Carbon Leaf is pretty tight too. (The Dukes better beat up "hurting" Towson)

Whoa, is this moving from best live shows to best albums? Here's 20 cents for tadass:

Hip Hop:
Black Album
Chronic
Illmatic

Rock:
Pearl Jam Ten
Nevermind
Joshua Tree (Fruity I know, but still rocks)

Heavy:
Master of the Puppets
AcDc Black

Classic:
Tchaikosvky Swan Lake
Pacobell Canon in D (not an album but really gets me up for a game of cricket)

Oh, and cause this is a football blog: Cambell really is going to be terrible this week. DO NOT GET YOUR HOPES UP! I know Romo made optimism tempting, but don't do it. He practiced in the same system for THREE years, not 7 months. Expect 2-4 pics, 4 sacks, and Chris Samuels head shakes all day.

Hey guys,

Yesterday in the Post there was an article about -

"The Terrapins Formula"

If the result is less than 12%, you should win (well, most of the time).

The statistic is derived by adding a team's interceptions, fumbles, dropped passes, sacks and penalties during a game and dividing that by the team's total number of offensive plays. The key is to keep the result under 12 percent -- meaning that the team is committing a human error on 12 percent or less of its plays."

For one of you diehard fans (sorry, I don't have the time,) how have the Skins' games turned out when applying this formula?

Thanks ahead of time.

Definitely mainstream, but the best show I ever saw was at the Tibetian Freedom Concert at RFK when the Chili Peppers had first gotten back together with Frusciante. A crazy lightning storm cut Day 1 short (actually electrocuted a girl in our section but we had jumped onto the field by then). RHCP was supposed to play that day so we were all bummed when they ended the show early (at least the girl ended up being okay). Pearl Jam was headlining Day 2 and cut their set after about 5 or 6 songs. Everyone expected a PJ encore, but RHCP came running out and the entire stadium went insane! They pretty much played 5 or 6 songs from Blood Sugar Sex Magic and had all the energy in the world because it was their first show in forever. Maybe it's cuz I'm a big fan, but that was the best show I've seen live, hands down.

>>> "What's next: Star Trek movie remakes"

Actually, yes.

JJ Abrams ("Alias", "Lost", "Mission Impossible 3") is producing, writing, and directing a "re-boot" (my most despised Hollywood term of the year, I should say) of the Star Trek franchise. They're in pre-production now, with no word on casting thus far. Personally, I hope he does it as a musical because there's as much a chance I'll sit through a "Moulin Rouge"-ized Star Trek as I would through any other Star Trek.

FWIW, Heath Ledger would be hilarious as Scotty.

Sallie, my dear, I answered every question they sent me and stayed on there like an extra half hour. Did you check the final transcript? Maybe they did not pass that question on to me (there is a moderator).

Son Volt - I was at that show at The Black Cat. Good stuff (and finally got the damn hand stamp off today, a week later).
That Anders dude who opened up was the truth. Have to find his solo stuff.

In no way did I mean to imply Buckley's stuff was girlie - check out Sketches To My Sweetheart The Drunk - it's just that in college and early-20s I went through a stage where I gave it as a gift to whoever I was dating, and it never failed, brother. It was like a smooth can of Colt-45. Grace is the bomb.

Can't believe there is another New Bomb Turks fan out there. They rocked. Did not know Eric was writing now, but I'm not surprised. Will have to check his stuff out.

Did anyone see trail of dead at the 9:30 the other night? I had every intention of going and even had a free pass from the wife to get out, but all the Portis/JC craziness had me working late. My paper gave it a so-so review.

I'm flying to Tampa Sat. afternoon, but otherwise I guarantee you my wife and I would be at the Brian Wilson show that night, even if I had to leave baby Chloe at some random person's house to babysit (okay, that last part's not true. please no child and protective services emails).

But seriously, he is playing all of Pet Sounds, probably the greatest album of the last 50 years, maybe 100, since Robert Johnson started getting nasty with some Delta Blues?

I saw the first 3 Lollapoloosa tours a bunch - West Va, NJ, Penn - but man, that got played out real quick.

First one was the best, and getting to see Jane's Addiction while knowing this was the end, was pretty amazing.

Saw Gibbie and the surfers many times. Complete madness.

Rites of Spring - All Through A Life, to me, is one of the 5 best albums of the harDCore/DC Emo scene.

PG, I hear ya.

Everytime I have to visit Mt. Doom I start sweating like a you-know-what in church.

I'm not sure if it's because I'm worried about the forces of Mordor teaming up with the Goblins (IT) and finding the cookies on my laptop from the midget p*rn sites or if it was because I was raised Catholic.

I'm thinking about giving up Catholicism for Lent this year.

If you're pumping the old school, like EPMD, you need to throw some love toward Eric B. and Rakim and A Tribe and Blackstar. Also, skip the Radiohead.

Posted by: Colin | November 17, 2006 2:42 PM

Posse - ever see the RHCP before they blew up?
Caught them during the Mother's Milk tour with Fishbone (who was touring for Truth and Soul). Life changing experiencing.

During my senior or junior year of high school (can't remeber which one) Pearl Jam and Smashing Punmpkins opened for the Peppers on an East Coast tour, which just happened to be Syracuse when I was up there visiting the school. Pretty good stuff. Blood Sugar had just come out, 10 had not been out long. Pretty wild.

Oh to be young again.

Who is he/she? Have a cell number? I want to fuss at them. Don't they know I am your BIGGEST blog fan? j/k

Our FA acquisitions for next year: Simeon Rice and Albert Haynesworth.

One is washed up and the other has anger-management issues; they should both fit right in.

Posted by: Megskin | November 17, 2006 2:49 PM

Let's enjoy the Campbell, Betts, TJ era for the rest of this year. Because, folks, with Ladell and TJ being free agents after this season and the way things have been going, do you really think they will be back next year? If Ladell does well, and he will, his price will sky rocket. History should have told Joe, Danny and Vinny that it would be better to pay to keep him. But it seems that they are not students of history, especially their own. Maybe they'll take a winter history class and learn something. Then they might, for once, try to keep their own FA's.

Imagine if we had kept Pierce and Ryan Clark. Hmmm....

One more point, with Betts, Ducket and Sellers in the backfield, it has to be power running game and no more finesse stuff. Now is that a Gibbs style offense or a Sanders style? Will the off season bring a change in scheme or a change in personnel? Hmmm...

Posted by: FW | November 17, 2006 2:49 PM

Stones in 78 must have been absolutely killer. Wonder if there is a decent bootleg out there on the net or something? Would love to see tha setlist.

Colin - OK Computer and The Bends by Radiohead are completely genius albums.

I'm trying to limit it to three suggestions a week, but I going to be throwing some Biz Markie (Vapors),Big Daddy Kane, Souls of Mischief and Pharcyde our there in future weeks.

And Mr. Clinton is still putting on three-hour shows. Now that is a live act not to be missed.

j-la-c,

you should make a suggestion thread where people can post their recommendations via links to the file. that way people don't have to find obscure websites/programs to download the music...which will avoid the whole spyware thing too.
there are plenty of places to upload music...www.yousendit.com, www.rapidshare.com are two of hundreds...
this could be a place where you can not only get your daily (hourly, minutely) fix on the Skins, but one where bloggers can broaden their musical horizon.

Ricky Bobby, thanks for the Buffett knowledge. Didn't mean to be critical, just curious to get a fan's input.

There are some DC bands out there both historically and now that are the tightness:

Anyone have files on 'Bad Brains', 'The Walkmen', and/or 'Fugazzi'?

Always Repping DC...

The Walkmen are getting some mainstream love (Their song 'The Rat'was used for Fox's baseball playoff ads). My boys and I used to drag ourselves to the 'Grog and Tankard' to see them play for 8 friends and a crazy guy with one sleepy eye and one super active eye with a reverse mohawk...

The Stones set list...
Most of the material was from the Some Girls album which was just released and why they were doing the small theater tour..Atlanta, DC, Philly, NYC, Boston and one other city I can't remember.

They also did most of their standards...I can't remember which but it wasn't a disappointing show....

How about:

Barry Sanders
Billy Sims (great first few years)
Barry Switzer (great college career, one SB)
Bo Schembechler (the late great)
Bart Starr
Bob Stoops
Barbara Streisand (in the view of some)
Barney Sedran (Basketball Hall of Fame)
Bill Sharman (Basketball HOF)
Bill Shaw (Football HOF)
Brooke Shields
Britney Spears
Barbara Stanwyck
Ben Stiller
Brent Scowcroft (near great, depending on political viewpoint)
Bill Shakespeare
Bram Stoker
Boz Scaggs
Bob Seger
Bruce Sutter

Semi Famous B.S.ers
"Bermuda" Schwartz (Weird Al Yankovic drummer)
Bob Sanders (Indy Colts)
B.J. Sams (Baltimore Ravens)
Bo Scaife (Titans)
Bart Scott (Ravens)
Boone Stutz (Atlanta Falcons)
Shane Battier
Steve Blake

Missed Peppers, Pumpkins, and PJ when they played at Bender Arena at AU. All my friends went, though. Not sure where I was.

Saw Alice in Chains open for Van Halen at Capital Center. 3rd row seats, front and center. Pretty badass.

Skid Row opening for Guns at Capital Center on the Use Your Illusion tour. Axl fought somebody in the crowd who had a camera...big shock.

Monsters of Rock tour at RFK - Faith No More, Metallica, Guns. Guns was two hours late...big shock.

Cut Arch, Andrea Carter, and all the other dead weight this off-season. Take all the cap hits in 2007 since it will be a go nowhere season anyway. Start with a clean slate in 2008.

Hey Jason, glad you liked that show. I hope my buddy didn't step on your toes. He was the one reeling around drunk with two giant Xs on his hands. And too funny about that hand stamp. You are so right. I went to a show at R'n'R Hotel on Tuesday, and that stamp washed off before that Black Cat's faded. Great when everyone at work knows you've been out late boozing!

JC,

I have a good 78 Stones Boot on LP called "We Hope Kieth Wakes Up in time for the Gig" on LP....I just got it and think it was newly pressed. I got it from Norton Records, but don't think they "released" it...The version of Happy is insane.

I have seen the New Bomb Turks a bunch... once with the Dictators was insane and then again with the Hellacopters which also rocked....ED even stuffed my Skins baseball cap down his pants, pogoed around, and then plopped it back on my head......

Know why the Skins stink, cause the *new* JG whines & complains (penalities, schedule, etc) and ends up making excuses for his team's bad performance. Back in my day I never made excuses and the players were held accountable.

Posse Redux & JLa, I saw the RHCP down here in Richmond in '89 or '90 at a little outdoor area called Shaefer Court at VCU. Uplift Mofo Party Plan was the joint at that time, and it was mayhem. There basically was no one between them and a thousand VCU students. They played about 4 or 5 songs then ran off the stage in all directions because people were getting so nutty. Dropped their stuff and ran for their lives. AHHHHH those crazy art school dayz............

Oh yeah, I know they've been repped many a time, but Bad Brains rule.

Posted by: Pulldownclaw | November 17, 2006 4:11 PM

Lisa,

What exactly about the 'Skins is worth blogging about at this point? I'm excited to see Jason Campbell play, but honestly this season is over and while the players have to play their guts out, the fans are under no obligation to cheer their guts out for a team that is going nowhere really, really fast.

Posted by: P Diddy | November 17, 2006 4:37 PM

Posted by: Bangbros | November 17, 2006 4:48 PM

Man, what I wouldn't give to go back and catch numerous acts early in their careers! My first concert was freshman year of college in '95 so I missed out on all the great early 90's stuff until it was plastered on MTV 24/7 and no longer the same. Not that there weren't great shows to see, but seeing sets in the smaller venues before bands blow up is the best way to go IMHO. Of course, I wish I had been at Lollapalooza '92 - that lineup was just sick!

Posted by: Posse Redux | November 17, 2006 5:02 PM

I was pretty good, too, even if I say so myself, as I usually do.

Does anyone remember "Momma's Boys" deom like, 1986? - I bet they only sold 6 copies of any album, and that my Rockville friends had those. Were they as bad (I mean bad, not BAD) as Kix?

I like the eclectic conversations here, personally. I don't live and/or breathe football, and I love making fun of people who do. There are so many noble pursuits apart from football. Like reading about TomKat's wedding, for example.

Posted by: P Diddy | November 17, 2006 6:08 PM

I love football and basketball and pretty much live and breath those topics but I also have diverse interests as well...just not obscure music and Borat....guess that's because I'm a woman....

Posted by: Lisa | November 17, 2006 6:12 PM

Say it not so Lisa. What will I do without you? Maybe you should give JLC a topic to talk about.

Posted by: Borat Sagdiyev | November 17, 2006 6:14 PM

Personally, I'm with Diddy. This place can be all over the road some days and that's what keeps me coming back.

Time to go beat someone up for a playstation 3. Check back later.

Posted by: Ali Haji Shank | November 17, 2006 6:22 PM

Love the music reviews although have to say most of the stuff is not to my taste.

PFunk anyday though. Live shows - you can't beat the Boss who doesn't do it the same any night anytime. Even if you don't like his music he is one of the best live shows around because he hooks you in, tells a story and leaves you smiling as someone already said.

I know this is the other side of the planet from the punk/post punk stuff but the greatest musical genius out there is Prince. I don't care who you are if you like R&B, hip hop, funk, rock, dance or any combination there in of the last 20 years then you have give props to him because he's echoed everywhere.

I saw his last tour where supposedly he was playing his explicit songs for the last time since he had found God. You wouldn't think Little Red Corvette, Kiss, Cream, Raspberry Beret would fly as an acoustic set but this guy sat on a bar stool by himself in the middle of the stage with his guitar and a mic and had 25,000 people wrapped around his little finger as he made his way through - getting us to sing the naughty parts so he wouldn't have to. It was phenomenal. The only sad part wasn't he didn't play two of my favorites Sexy M'er F'er and Gett Off.

Ahh I could wax poetic about the little man all day long. Plus even though he is two inches tall he is undeniably sexy - I'm taller than the average girl but for him I'd make an exception.

GO SKINS! Souper all the way even if you throw ints and get sacked. The blog's got your back! Get'er done!

Posted by: sfskin | November 17, 2006 6:27 PM

Apologies to Lisa for the long off topic post. I was blog-less all day, it was all pent-up.
Plus I wasted too much space and time on stupid Suck yesterday even though it made me giggle.

Posted by: sfskin | November 17, 2006 6:32 PM

Personally, I couldn't care less about the music reviews, so (novel concept) I skip right over them. Not too painful, really.

I think the one thing we've learned since August on this blog is that the readership has very eclectic interests, in pop culture, civilized culture, and sports culture. It's part of the fun here. I'd much rather read that than yet another regurgitated SportsCenter recap.

If you're not having fun, I'm sure extremeskins will dissect a Cover 2 for you. For the 900th time this season, I'm sure.

As for diverse interests: yeah, I got that. I am interested in just about everything except feminine hygiene products and daytime television. But I guess that's because I'm a man.

Posted by: P Diddy | November 17, 2006 6:43 PM

Hey Gang,

I should apologize - all of you are enjoying the "off topic" posts and I am pretty much alone in my objection to it.

"Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large slice of lemon-peel."

Remember: be safe, don't drink and drive, but do drink and flirt. Oh, and smile!

Top DC Concerts of All Time:

Jimi Hendrix Experience in the ballroom at the old Hilton Hotel on Conn. Ave, NW. on a Sunday afternoon in Feb. 1968. Two+ hours of sheer amazement.

The Jefferson Airplane at Ritchie Coliseum/U. of Md. for a midnight show in support of the Volunteers album release. (1969?) Totally unbelievable three hour show. Up against the wall, *************!

Emerson, Lake & Palmer at the Baltimore Civic Center, Dec. 1972 - Brain Salad Surgery tour. A sonic assault without equal.

And for all of you who had to settle for Lollapalooza shows, the Laurel Music Festival at a racetrack in Laurel, Md in the Woodstock vein, circa summer 1969. The lineup included: Frank Zappa/Mothers of Invention, Sly & the Family Stone, Ten Years After, the Jeff Beck Group w/Rod Stewart and more. Basically an all-night affair: great weather, great crowd, and great music, but my memory was never the same afterward. Must have been all that weird smoke in the air . . .

Last but certainly not least:

"Yes" at the Baltimore Civic Center in Feb. 1973 on the TfTO tour. Three hours of the most amazing musical performance you could ever imagine.

***

And most of those shows were during the George Allen era of the Redskins. Some things WERE better in the old days!

Please allow me to extend my personal condolences to you on the loss of your mother. I know there are no words that can console you at this difficult time, nor topics that will bring you joy.

The holiday season is a difficult time for such sadness. My mother died shortly before Christmas last year and it was a miserable time for my family. The shock and grief passes in time, albeit slowly, but nothing will replace her absence. Hold dear your best memories of her - they will help get you through the worst days.

Blessings and best wishes to you and your family . . .

I figured that Stones tour for Some Girls judging by the years. Killer, killer album.

Prince is a (bleeping, bleeping) genius. His first 3 albums are incredible. He kind of lost me there for a long while, then I agree, brought the heavy funk on stuff like Sexy and Gett Off, then went off the deep end again.

No doubt the man is one of the 10 best artists of our generation.

VA - your BS list makes you an OG. Plenty thorough.
AlderPlank - my first show was at the old Bmore Civic Center as well, only not nearly as epic as what you saw (Hendrix? are you frickin kidding me? that's huge).
Quiet Riot/Iron Maiden in like '82-83. I was in third or fourth grade and I browbeat my dad until he finally took me.

Anyone looking for a bad brains primer - and if you're going to live in this area by all means know your roots - check out the Rock For Light CD - some of their best hardcore stuff and sick reggae on the same disc.

Fugazi - 12 songs is one of my favorites, but those guys have a bunch of great ones. In On The Kill Taker is up there, too.

Lisa,

So sorry for your loss. I would like to be able to do your mother justice with poetry, but I would fail miserably...

Do they still play "waiting room" during TO's @ FedEx? I don't remember noticing it the last couple of years ...

I've never heard it played, but sometimes in the press box we can't hear everything going on in the stadium anyway.
That would be pretty cool if they did.
That's an amazing tune.

I owe an apology to a fan on here (forgot the name) but I had defended owner Daniel Snyder thinking he had learned his ways and reading Jason's previous blog about the Clark situation and how Snyder said they were done overspending and they learned their lessons? What a crock of S***!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of course they went out and overspent on guys that aren't getting it done AGAIN.

It's sick. Snyder will always be who he is. I commend him for putting money to get a more than qualified coaching staff but through it all..the money and free agents aren't cutting it. This team has gotten lost in the mix about its identity as been pointed out numerous times. I think Gibbs was starting to realize that on Sunday. Gibbs says it starts with him well he's gotta realize these are the players to come in and adhere to his system. A RUNNING GAME. Then you bring in and O'Coordinator who has a completely different system. THere is going to be a lot of soul searching after this season.

Snyder..oh how I wish he would check his ego and surround himself with cronies who hopefully can talk some sense into him. It's frustrating. Unfortunately Snyder will always be Snyder. I'm sorry I ever thought he might've learned his lesson.

If only the ghost of Jack Kent Cooke would haunt Snyder in his bedroom..that might be the only chance Snyder has of changing just a little bit.

AL SAUNDERS HAS GOT TO GO!!!

How many games is it going to take for him to figure out that we are not the team he is trying to make us into? Running the ball less than 30-35 times a game is completely unacceptable. Especially with the way the defense is getting manhandled, he should be trying to hang on to the ball as long as possible. And to hell with all the outside sweeps and tosses. Bring back the smash mouth between the tackle power football. I am so over reading the stat sheet and seeing Portis with 16 carries. How many times did we run the ball yesterday, 20 times? UGHHHH it is driving me NUTS!!!

I Don't care how many pages that playbook is, Saunders does not understand JOE GIBBS REDSKIN FOOTBALL. It does work. just look at Carolina, who's running that offense down there? DAN HENNING. I don't know about you, but STEVE SMITH reminds me a lot of GARY CLARK.

C'mon Coach, it's time to take back the keys to the Caddie, admit your mistake, and get back to who we are as a team. It's not too late to make a playoff run. We've done it before, we can do it again.

GO SKINS!!

Ok....... I gotta throw my 2 cents in since were talkin' music........

This kinda started off as a conversation about punk so I'll stick to that...... how about
Suicidal Tendencies
R.K.L. (Rich Kids On LSD)

R.K.L. are pretty obscure but one of the most talented punk bands out there (from the wine country of California)

If you want to talk D.C. punk......and I can't believe noone has mentioned these bands yet.......
Fugazi
Minor Threat
Scream (Dave Grohl was in this band in the '80s)

Yes.... Jimmy Buffet is boring no matter how much alcohol you've consumed (or other drugs for that matter).

No..... the Grateful Dead cannot qualify as your favorite concert if your best memories are from the parking lot (I was at the RFK show in '90 and never went inside the arena :-)).

Jeff Buckley does not "shred" in any way shape or form..... neither does Zepplin, if anything they could be considered "Stoner rock". And how many times has a stoner ever done anything fast?

And my favorite concert (like anyone cares) goes hand in hand w/ m favorite album:
Slayer - Reign In Blood
Slayer - live in '86 on that tour w/ Overkill supporting (on the Feel The Fire tour)

Not obscure by any means but one of the few albums that after 20 years still kicks my ass up and down the street...... now that's what I call "shredding"!

Of course you can't forget about Cacophony (Jason Becker and Marty Friendman) if you want to talk about shredding guitarists.

Trivia: Most of you probably know that Marty Freidman was the lead guitarist for Megadeth for many years...... does anyone know what the name of the band that he was a member of in the early '80s? They were from Laurel, MD if I remember correctly.

Ok...... on to football....... so the consensus seems to be that Campbell looked pretty damn good. Well, I whole heartedly agree! The whole look and feel of the offence changed when he was in there...... and you really notice Brunell's short comings after watching Jason for 4 quarters.

That opening pass to BL was awesome..... too bad he didn't earn his paycheck and catch the damn thing..... another FA bust. why can't The Danny ever learn?

I was almost ready to cancel my Sunday Ticket next year (I live in NoCal) until I saw JC play last Sunday....... now there is hope and Direct TV will keep getting my hard earned $$$. :-)

Ok..... I'm sure I'm covering old ground here but how ironic that the savior of the Redskin's initials are JC? I'm sure there's got to be some numerologist out there who can tell us that the value of JCs name plus his birthday divided by his jersey number equals the Skin's winning the next 4 Super Bowls.... right?..... maybe?....... please? :-)

Hey MM,

They were Bad Brains before they were Minor Threat.
Looks like we have a few NoCal Skins fans out here.

I'm in SF myself
