JC - The High School Years
By popular demand, here's a chunk of text I found in my laptop after returning from my trip To Taylorsville and Auburn:
Campbell took the reigns at Taylorsville High School his sophomore season, and Coach Shannon White inherited a strong crop of talent when he came to the school that spring. Most kids in town had played with the same teammates in their age group since elementary school and switched from one season to the next (Taylorville high school basketball team annually starts two weeks late because the football team - with the same roster - is playing deep into the state playoffs).
White came from an option background - an old-school, ground-oriented attack - but a few games into his tenure here the Tartars were losing 27-0. Taylorsville, a 2-A school, routinely faces 4-A and 5-A competition early in the season, and, with nothing to lose, White opted to air it out. Campbell led the team to a 45-27 victory and finished 1998 with a state title.
"We ran the table after that game, and I threw the heck out of it," White said. "We became a very prolific offense."
Campbell put the team in the state finals in Jackson, Miss. on grit and guile, scrambling for his life, eventually finding a receiver downfield and pumping a difficult throw across his body to the end zone for a game-winning touchdown with time expiring. "The biggest games, those were the times when he always performed the best," White said. "He never gets rattled; his demeanor is always the same."
After Campbell won that game with his desperation pass, the field flooded with humanity. The sidelines erupted and his coaches went nuts, yelling and jumping. The teenage quarterback was tranquil. His expression never changed - no outward signs of excitement.
When Jeff Duvall, the principal at Taylorsville High School who was then a jubilant assistant coach, asked what was going through the youngster's mind, how he could be so calm, Campbell responded: "That's just what I'm supposed to do."
"I'll never forget that," Duvall said. "It was like he just went out there to do his job, and he didn't want any of the attention. He just expects to succeed and expects to win."
Campbell threw for more than 2,700 yards with 33 touchdowns that season (he was named District MVP in basketball as a junior as well) and the recruiting race was on. The following fall, ESPN came to town, spending a few days in Taylorsville to do a feature on him for "Scholastic Sports America," but their subject was about the only person not caught up in the hysteria (he later announced his decision to attend Auburn to his chruch congreagation with no fanfare). Campbell was named a 1999 Parade All American and Gatorade Player of the Year in Mississippi. Several publications rated him the second-best quarterback prospect in the nation.
He never spoke much about any of it, focusing on his weaknesses instead and devoting every free minute to training. White's summers were spent outdoors - suffocating in the sticky heat - rising early to help Campbell improve his footwork and 40-yard dash times. He threw as many passes as he could each day. He was relentless in his quest to be better.
"Jason is a very confident kid, but being talented isn't part of his thinking process," White said. "He thinks he has to work for everything. He was crazy about working. He is never satisfied with where he's at, and he works so hard at it. He has such a work ethic."
It's just high school, but since some were wondering about his mentality, there ya have it. He does get fired up - he was pumped after that 10-yard first down scramble Sunday - and showed it on the field, but he is excels at taking things in stride.
Notes: Troy Vincent says he expects to practice today and is hamstring, while not 100 percent, is feeling better. Jon Jansen is still walking gingerly with a calf strain, and is clearly hobbled by it. I don't expect him to practice but he is aiming to play Sunday, and I suspect he will with a little rest.

Great post, J-La, thanks for that.
Safe to say that we can prattle on with our hopeful (and sometimes hysterical) projections of Soupy's greatness without worrying that it will go to his head.
Nice nugget on T-Vince. I feel kind of okay with him or Foxy back there in the secondary. Or maybe that's the booze talking.

In celebration of Troy returning, I repost this bit of info from the last thread (mostly because I still resent Desmond for what he never did here):
Troy Vincent was picked two behind Desmond Howard. I think getting Vincent even this late in his career he has already done more for the Redskins than Desmond ever did.

Good article. Thanks.

Recall a great story with a similar tone. Coach saying he was having a problem with his top draft pick. So he called the kids college coach at Mississippi Valley State and asked what he should do. The college coach told him that the kid has this crazy work ethic and he should work his rookie harder. So Bill Walsh took the advice, worked the kid harder and ultimately Jerry Rice turned out to be pretty good.

I WAS going to resist the urge to repost this, but since this thread has taken a musical turn after all, and it was all the way at the end of the other thread, here it is. Again, my apologies to any who may already have read it.
80's/90's Punk -- Now we're in my wheelhouse. Best DC punk band of the Nation of Ulysses era was, far and away, Circus Lupus, and most of their successor bands (Antimony, Monorchid in the mid-90's, even the Whips now [only the same drummer but Arika is great], Skull Control maybe not quite as much) were also really good. Their records still hold up.
As for JC, I believe he was a big fan of Beefeater and Strange Boutique.
I apologize in advance for posting this both to this thread and the next.

AL - ROFL, that was good! Jerry Rice - "pretty good" - what an understatement :)
Jason - another great post. Like I've said before, I like what I see from Campbell. At least there is hope, where before there was none. I think his talent and unflappable nature is going to be a real boost for the rest of the team. He may hit rough patches (what young player doesn't), but if he can stay cool, and keep improving, I'll be happy.

The name "Tatar" initially appeared amongst the nomadic Turkic-speaking peoples of northeastern Mongolia in the region around Lake Baikal in the beginning of the 5th century.
As various of these nomadic groups became part of Genghis Khan's army in the early 13th century, a fusion of Mongol and Turkic elements took place, and the invaders of Russia and Hungary became known to Europeans as Tatars (or Tartars). After the break up of the Mongol Empire, the Tatars became especially identified with the western part of the empire, which included most of European Russia and was known as the Golden Horde.

Posted by: 4-12 | November 29, 2006 3:22 PM
Tartars -
and this is off the top - essentially they dissapeared in the 13th century, the original group sourced from the Dada or Tata Mongols was either assymilated or annihilated, history treats either with indifference. Then, a bunch of folks in the Steppes, (Bulgars I think) started calling themselves Tartars. For no reason to be proven except availability from what I know.
Whether it is the sauce on my fish sandwich or a bunch of vodka drinkers on the Volga, my song is still the shnit.

Jason, who drives a Maybach at the skins park? I saw one on the road the other day by the park and there was a brother that looked like an athlete (judging from his age, non-double chin face, his triceps showing thru his tight woolen jersey and his attitude with windows down in 40 degree weather) but who in the world has that kinda money on the skins team?

Hey, fellow Portland Skins fan,
I've been going to City Sports Bar, 424 SW 4th St (downtown, obviously). I try to get there by 9:30am to 'claim' the big HD screen behind the bar. Nice place, pleasant staff, ok gameday grub. I'm new to Portland, but while there are a few other sports bars in town, my search ended with this one.
The biggest screen in the place, by the way, goes to the inexplicably large Browns fan club, which actually does a raffle during each game.
Hope to see you there.

Oooooh, I loooooove the Maybach. A friend of mine had a Maybach limo with a (I kid you not) champagne/wine cooler installed in the back. Good times in that car!
Posted by: P Diddy | November 29, 2006 4:26 PM
I thought everyone on the roster could afford cars like that. Don't they all get $1M signing bonuses?
Posted by: OD | November 29, 2006 4:26 PM
BTW, I can totally understand the appeal of something as exclusive as the Maybach, but the Maserati Quattroporte is much cooler looking, if you ask me.
I'm not much of a sedan guy, though. I find them too sensible, no matter their price. Anything where a baby seat would appropriate is likely not my kind of vehicle.

Campbell will have his best game of the season Sunday against a horrible Atlanta pass defense, provided the coaches open up the offense. Either way, we need the defense to play like they did last week to get a win. I have a feeling they will.

Hard to believe JC was drafted by the gang of clueless, GM-lacking morons and Snyder lackeys I keep reading about here. If only we'd had a real GM like Bobby Beathard, maybe we could have gotten a real QB in the draft, like Ryan Leaf?
Got to love SportsTalk around here--any mistakes are caused by Snyder & Vinny, any good moves are caused by...a nameless force or something. Sounds fair to me.
Posted by: Wally | November 29, 2006 4:44 PM
SportsTalk around here?
Or sports talk radio in general? anyone every been in Boston long enough to listen to the hosts and callers there? Hell, we're all sane compared to Sox fans (who I like to consider our MLB partners -- since we're originally the Boston Braves, we both struggle against the default/evil popular teams (Yankees and Cowboys), both having Red in the name of our mascot and both being the most racist franchises in their respective sports).
Posted by: OD | November 29, 2006 4:51 PM
It's great that Campbell has always been a winner as a QB. He's not accustomed to losing as many of the Redskins are. We need that winning attitude around here, it's contagious.
Posted by: Max | November 29, 2006 4:52 PM
Is Swissham even a threat to take Novak's job? Well, hopefully with Campbell in there at QB we should have more extra point attempts than field goal attempts.

i wasn't totally serious when i said "it's stupid..." cuz i probly do the same thing too if i got a $10 mil bonus.
but i know what i would NEVER do is build goddang houses the size of castles in the middle of nowhere. (ala whoknew, jason williams' castle).
i once worked with someone who was so ashamed to show her coworkers what she drove because of what others might think of her...but when she told me why she spent so much money on a car(more than 10K) i understood why people buy bling and cars.
you guys ever see that episode where oprah goes to buy a mercedes? she's like i want that one and drives off in it or something without "haggling" with the dealer and gale, oprah's friend goes back and haggles with the dealer and gets $75K knocked off the price without any hesitation.

I thought Saved by the Bell was brilliant. Easily the best show since "Good Times" and "What's Happenin'!"
Though I'm pretty sure that nothing in television history has or will ever come close to the episode when Rog and the gang met the Doobie Brothers. The closest was when Rerun got inducted into the cult that worshipped cabbage.

4. That chick from Valley

Come on guys! I love Entourage, but it's not really a good show. I mean, with the exception of Ari, the acting sucks and it relies on hot chicks and celebrities to keep us interested (not that there's anything wrong with that). We tune in for the "Man, I wish that was me!" factor more than "Wow, this show is really well done. I can't wait to see what happens next!" And yes, I own seasons 1 and 2 on DVD so I'll shut up now.
And I'll take 24, Lost, Friday Night Lights, The Wire and Voltron as my top 5.

Saved By The Bell is straight dope ... and I have yet to meet a man who does not have some kind of thing for Mrs. Hines. There is some kind of mandatory pull there that I just can't put my finger on.

Yes, Cheryl Hines has the hot stuff. But how about a shout-out for Jeff Garlin, the straw that stirs (stirred?) the "Curb" drink.
I'm wondering if my top 5 are all shows which are off the air or finished their run. Arrested Development. Curb. BBC's The Office and Little Britain, not to mention Ground Force during the Titchmarsh era. Oh wait, they are still making new Trailer Park Boys episodes. Damn, that is a great show. The movie was great, too. Is that more than five?
Hot chocolate time, and I'm not speaking euphemistically. (Unless Wanda Sykes is reading this. I love you, Wanda.) It's a cold night here in Portland, I'm talking down around 30 degrees. Brrrr.

Did anyone see the story about the spate of sea lion violence in California and flash on the brilliant A.D. storyline where G.O.B. accidentally incited his magic act seal's bloodlust, which led to Buster having his hand bitten off by that very seal when he finally overcame his fear of the ocean? I sure did.

Where'd everybody go? Oh, right, it's awfully late out there in Skins Nation.
Last item from the department of non sequiturs: in the Premier League, heroic Portsmouth stole a nil-nil draw away to Liverpool and with that precious point rose to third place in the table. Incredible for this unheralded south coast squad, who are fighting their guts out for good old Harry in spite of an injury-depleted roster. Play up, Pompey!

Jason you ol' dog... you were definately holding out on me with all this JC stuff. You were getting annoyed at us asking for background stuff not because we were wrong to ask, but because it was the ace up your sleeve. Now you're the most popular guy on the streets, selling that candy, getting everyone hooked. Give me more of that JC stuff. Yeah Yeah!
Nothing but love.

I hope he has that good fortune for the skins. The more I read about him the more I like him. I hope this guy can do the things we all want him too. I dont care what his numbers look like as long as he gets a 'W'.
Thanks JLC great article. As always.
