Redskins Insider, by Jason La Canfora Redskins Insider

Monday Morning H-Back

Maybe it was the giddiness of a big win to stave off complete collapse. Maybe it was a strange, lingering side effect from too much turkey over the weekend. Or perhaps Coach Joe is just becoming more convinced by the half.

Whatever the reason, he was more buoyant and enthused about Jason Campbell after this game then ever, and rightfully so. The kid did not have a statistically stellar game, but that's okay at this point. He is using his tools on big plays - like the game-winning touchdown pass - and small plays - buying himself time, stepping into the pressure when the rush is mounting and doing what comes naturally.

Bottom line: He is making plays no Redskins quarterback has been able to make in my three years on this beat. Heck, maybe no one here since Theismann was making things happen on the move and with his athleticism. And, yes, Jason threw a poor, poor pick Sunday. But at least it was a deep ball to the sidelines that could not be returned, and ended up as more of an early punt than anything else. He protects the football and makes smart decisions.

Got to speak to Bugel and Breaux alone for a while after the game, and they were pumped up by the way the kid is playing. They mentioned his decision-making right away - which, we all know, is the key to Coach Joe's heart as a QB - and they loved to see him get the ball to Cooley over the middle, something they admittedly have not done enough of this season.

That's not to say there are not major issues still with the offense. This Lloyd thing is getting ridiculous. You gotta find a way to make a play for your kid QB. This has to be one of the worst seasons ever by any Redskin starting receiver, not to mention one who has $10-mil guaranteed. Randle El finally got back in the end zone, but it's clear Santana is not close to 100 percent right now. Jason definitely wants to spread the ball around, but the receivers have to find a way to get open with more regularity.

I have seen nothing yet from this kid that has not impressed me. I'm not saying he's going to be a superstar, but I think he will be a very solid, winning quarterback in this league is given a chance, and all of his intangibles, his high character and small ego make him a natural to lead your team.

Not sure if Jon Jansen got a game ball, but he deserved one. They found some good running room to the right side and he did a big-time job on Julius Peppers Sunday. Sean Taylor obviously played his best game of the season as well. It's hard to imagine how little he has been around the ball this season, and devastating what he can accomplish when he does end up around it.

Marcus Washington looked like Marcus Washington, Version 2004. All over the place, punishing people.

As much as we love Nick The Kick, and he certainly has guts, I can't see him sticking around next season at this point. Just not accurate enough and some of the kickoffs Sunday we were way short, getting caught at the 11 and 13.

The BLAW against playoff talk remains in tact, but I could be coerced to lift it next Monday depending on what happens this coming weekend. The NFC is co collectively inept - the ending of the Giants game was farcical in its stupidity - that, well, who knows. If Atlanta comes into FedEx with the complete lack of passion, urgency and aggressiveness (on offense) that Carolina displayed, it could be another ugly, close game with the outcome in doubt.

Good thing for the Skins that Tennessee is not in the NFC East, because the Titans are ripping through this division. The league calls it parity; seems a lot like mediocrity to me.

One last thought: How utterly bad was this game to watch? I mean, pretend for a minute you are not a fan with a vested outcome in the game and just reflect upon the opening 45 minutes of football Sunday. Trust me, it was flat-out horrible. Some of Carolina's play calling was vacant. The Skins wasting a timeout to review the Steve Smith TD was comical. The dropped passes, succession of three-and-outs and the blocked punts?

At least the pace picked up in the fourth quarter. I'll leave it at that.

Jason put the annointing oil away! Campbell had 48%compl. and 1 int(NO INT ARE OK)52 yds passing until the cooley pass at end.No pass rush in his face MOST the game(had time to throw)Panthers D hasnt been very good the last month. He seems to be just another QB nothing SPECIAL!

Campbell to Cooley -- touchdown!
A long bomb to excite this town!
Take a moment to pray
This duo will stay
And in their future scores abound!

PS JLaC's BLAW on playoff talk is VERY reasonable: it only took until the SECOND caller on the radio post-game show for someone to say the Skins would "run the table with the kid to make the playoffs." Please. Possible? Yes. Probable? No. If the Skins defend their turf over the next two weeks and end up 6-7 -- then we can talk. Also, the hell for Redskins Nation is that any playoff chances rest on the current division winners running away with it and beating down the teams the Skins would have to compete with (IF they can) for the last Wild Card -- meaning the Nation has to root HARD for....gasp...the Cowboys, among others (which includes Seattle tonight.)

Jason,

Did you get a chance to ask Saunders or Gibbs if Campbell called the same play that they were trying to communicate to him or were they sending in another play? A case could be made that having a young, smart quarterback calling his own plays might be a good thing because he will stick with the plays he feels comfortable with. Looks like Campbell made a great call on the Cooley pass and I was just curious what play the coaches wanted to call. Thanks!

I'm at a moment of vulnerability here. I'm torn to give my heart away once again but know I been at this place before.

Nope, I won't do it. I ain't falling for this so my heart can be broken to pieces.

Nice win though...

The BLAW against playoff talk remains in tact, but I could be coerced to lift it next Monday depending on what happens this coming weekend.

Ewwww! No! No! NO! Please, don't even suggest that. Let's be happy with what we can reasonably achieve this year, which is getting this team on track for next year.

One last thought: How utterly bad was this game to watch?

Any game that goes down to the wire is worth watching, to me at least. Passed out watching the Colt's game--now that was a boring, sorry.

Gotta say, like everyone else, I'm so impressed with Campbell, you can't teach someone to be calm in the face of impending disaster. To steal an overused phrase from John Madden: "unflappable."

I thought Rogers had one hell of a good game, no one seemed to write anything about that (though I'm not done with the paper); how about the pass deflection against Keyshawn in the end-zone? And is it my imagination or did Rogers and Springs play almost the whole game man-coverage on their receivers? Ditch the zone for those two. Anyways, the whole D stepped up, totally impressive.

Please, let's keep any complaining to a minimum: we won, effing enjoy it.

Nope, I won't do it. I ain't falling for this so my heart can be broken to pieces

LMAO! John classic

For the first person that didn't post his name. Do you think Brunell would have done better? No! Remember this is only his second game. To make the call for a touchdown alone is reason for you to be happy. I like what I see from Campbell.

Posted by: jm220 | November 27, 2006 8:38 AM

Megskin its your imagination (both safeties played double coverage 90%)and the team played like they were fighting for theyre jobs next year(gibbs threaten them).Thinking this team is better then it is would be a huge mistake!

Posted by: super bowl? NOT!! | November 27, 2006 8:42 AM

After sitting in RayJay watching the 'Skins D stink it up, it was awful good to be at home in Virginia watching the 'Skins eke one out. I don't care what the kids actual numbers are, the intangibles are visibily there. His facial expression never changed during the entire game, regardless of what was happening. Sure beats the dear in the headlights look I've seen from Redskins QB's over the past few years (read: George, Frerotte, Ramsey, Brunell).
It's nice to see the O-line actually step up for a change. Whatever Gibbs said to the team sure lit a fire under their asses.
Btw, Archubingus even screws up on special teams. I say we just cut him and chalk up the bad taste in our collective mouths to experience. What a sucker.

Posted by: tampadave | November 27, 2006 8:54 AM

both safeties played double coverage 90%

To be a pedant they were probably playing Cover-2 and not "double coverage", but whatever.

If at all it takes to make them play like that is write bad things and yell at them, sign me up.

Posted by: Megskin | November 27, 2006 8:54 AM

Were the Redskins 1 for 3 on third down and one-yard to go? That needs to be fixed - the first 1/2 was painful to watch.

Have you heard Campbell talk? What a great leader - spreads all the credit to everyone else and is extremely humble. That will only make his teammates play harder for him.

Posted by: Not sure | November 27, 2006 8:55 AM

When the Redskins win, they mainly win ugly. Thnak Gibbs for this, its one of his principles. The Jacksonville game is the exception to the rule. Boring (to some scoring junkies) they play winning Redskins football when force three and outs on defense and don't make mistakes on offense. If JC can get a little more touch on his deep ball and get some chemistry going with Moss and Lloyd things could heat up in the "flashy win" department. Gasp, more than 21 points in a single game.

I'm certainly not sold on Lloyd and my intuition says a big "possesion type" wide receiver with great range (ability to go up and get the ball, grab throws that are off slightly) is more of what JC needs...if the AARP crowd at the park decides he is the future at QB.

For all the speed talk on Lloyd, I don't see him streaking down the sidelines ever, wide-open or anything.

Posted by: UglyBall | November 27, 2006 9:01 AM

on Lloyd, I don't see him streaking down the sidelines ever, wide-open or anything.

He's always open on that shallow cross 3-5 yards past the line of scrimmage--like you said though, that's more of a possession type of receiver route. We definately need one of those type of guys.

Posted by: Megskin | November 27, 2006 9:10 AM

Great win. We can chalk this one up to Archibingus because I have a feeling he leaked the information about the defense and Greg Williams. That sure fired up the defense. Give Campbell a break, this was one of the best defenses in the NFL and he managed the game great. I actually don't think the inteception was all that bad. You have to take some shots down field and if he just threw it deeper as he said in his press conference it could have been 6. As it turned out he threw the ball 52 yards, or about the same distance that Frost could have punted it. So, it wasn't terrible. Much better than the Red Zone INT's that Brunell was throwing. The kid is only going to get better.

Posted by: Max | November 27, 2006 9:11 AM

The coaches were actually focused on the run this game, which was good to see. They didn't ask much of Campbell this game, but I am noticing that we are coming away with TD's in the Red Zone, which is something we were getting when Brunell was in there. All signs point to Campbell being better than Brunell, which is all we are asking at this point.

Posted by: Max | November 27, 2006 9:13 AM

Don't forget Campbell ran for a first down in the first half to give Novak a chance to miss the 37 yard field goal. Another thing Brunell hadn't done this season.

Posted by: Max | November 27, 2006 9:15 AM

Megskin,

We have a possession receiver, and his name is James Thrash. He should be running those routes. All he does is make big plays when given the chance, but he doesn't get much of a chance.

Posted by: Max | November 27, 2006 9:17 AM

AMTTS you are not going to believe this!

So many of the things Carson did can't be quantified. Similarly, Monk led the NFL in all-time receptions when he retired, and he blocked superbly and he was the most important locker-room influence on a three-time Super Bowl champion. I'm voting for him.

Fat boy is going to vote for Monk.

Posted by: jm220 | November 27, 2006 9:17 AM

John, I was sitting in Herndon yesterday afraid that that you, like me, was getting excited and they were about to give it away.

JC talk-Let's just stop it. I don't play the 88 yards till the Cooley catch, because a throw is a throw. But let's not say the kid looks great b/c he didn't. He is certainly buying time for his throws, making good decisions and going across the middle a bit but great he aint.

I will say this, the kid doesn't ever look rattled or even like a rookie for that matter. Even after the game when Sellers was up in his face all fired up for him he looked completely unfazed. Icewater in the viens and a strong arm are a great start. But a great QB they don't make.

As for best since Theisman, well Rypiens SB year has to be the single greatest year for a Skins QB.

Carlos- Thanks for coming out. At this point you shouldn't feel bad about keeping 1/11th of your annual salary. See the line of scrimmage doesn't bite. Try getting within 10 yards of it before the snap next game too.

Goldsten- You may be my next jersey purchase, but don't sell out on the pass on 2nd and 5 or it opens up gaping holes.

(Note to Racquetball Partner, i guarantee you tried to get rid of that 6th round pick like 5 times. See what draft picks can do?)

Holdman, you stink, sorry it's not your fault but you do.

I had this nightmare last night that i was a redskin and I looked down at my number to read #57 then I saw a red and black blur coming at me with the #7 on it.

I lunged trying to grasp the blur only to get air. As my face mask hit the grass i turned to my right to see the name Vick heading towards the endzone with nary a Redskin in sight. I woke up screaming. If it happens this weekend I'll start screaming again.

Grilliams-less ego, more Rocky.

O-line, good job, perhaps all you needed was a bit of hope.

Posted by: Skinz | November 27, 2006 9:19 AM

Enough negativity! (To those of you who are making negative comments!) We won - and looked good doing it - against a good team. Let's enjoy it for 1 day (or week) at least. Who knows how long before it happens again?

Also, this is Campbell's second game - I thought he played exceptionally well....John Elway was benched in his first game and it took him a long time to get it together.

The guys calling the plays indicated that Springs (and sometimes Rogers) was covering Smith - and they made it sound like it was man coverage.

Posted by: Lisa | November 27, 2006 9:21 AM

I must say as a huge non believer in JC. I LIKE WHAT I'M SEEING. KEEP PROVING ME WRONG JC!

I heard on SportsNite that he actually called that play in the huddle not Al. Cause the headset was not working correctly? Any truth to this?

I thought the D played the best game all year. With that said, there is still PLENTY of room for improvement ALL around.

Al Saunders called one of the most conservative games I have ever watched. I dont think he let JC throw the ball more thne 10 yards more then 3 times. GIVE THE GUY A CHANCE. OPEN IT UP...

As far as the BLAW... I suggest this does not get lifted until we are .500. Lets be honest its a stretch. Lets not get our hopes up. We beat an under acheiving Carolina team.

Posted by: Go Skins Go | November 27, 2006 9:32 AM

I am with Lisa. Enough negative comments at least for one day. Be happy that the D played with heart. That Campbell showed progress in his second game.

Posted by: jm220 | November 27, 2006 9:33 AM

Come on, John From Herndon... what fun is it if you don't put your heart out there on the line for your team?!?!?

To make omelets, you gotta break some hearts...oh... wait...

Posted by: QFB | November 27, 2006 9:37 AM

Go Skins Go,

The story is true. Campbell heard the formation called and then his headset went dead....he said he just called one of the plays they worked on in practice. Also heard this morning that play has been worked on since OTAs but never attempted because Brunell did not want to throw over the middle.

As to the conservative play calling, I was fine with it...it gave Campbell a chance to get acclimated (and comfortable) against a strong defense.

Posted by: Lisa | November 27, 2006 9:38 AM

Lisa -- Thanks. That gives me a lot of confidence in JC. Which I did not have previously. That play did work earlier in the first quarter. To Cooley again on a 3rd down play.

I'll take ugly #'s and a W. Then great #'s and an L.

HAIL!!!

Yes, as a card-carrying member of the Snarky Cynical Redskins Fan Society, DC Chapter, yesterday wasn't a perfect game. But before we take to our morning dose of caffeine-fueled invective and railing, let it be said that it was a heartening game.

Our defense showed up. Our secondary looked mildly competent. The Fatboys and Middling Backers got in a rudimentary form of rush. Not a horrid game for them.

Our offense - yes, Moss was less 'Oye Como Va' and more Kate, but injuries will do that to you. Our receivers weren't getting open as we'd like to see.
But, we got to running the ball, especially with the Buckett. (Wish they put Sellers in a bit more, though.) The Offending Fatboys were keeping a relatively solid lid on things - maybe Pucillo actually IS an asset. And better yet, The Souper made sure the ball was going FORWARD, when the opportunity presented itself.

Superbowl run? Nuh-uh. Decently played game for the Stella trying to get her groove back? Much better.

Of course, then there's Nicked Blovak, but that's always a good ribbing on a bad bye week.

Posted by: FlimFlam | November 27, 2006 9:44 AM

We have a possession receiver, and his name is James Thrash. [...] he doesn't get much of a chance.

Ooops, you're right. He's not all that big but could definately do the job. He should be starting instead of Lloyd at this point.

Posted by: Megskin | November 27, 2006 9:47 AM

Sorry I've been gone for so long...(crickets chirp as I wait for someone to chime in that I was missed...)
The hollidays are dumb.org.

JM, I saw that stuff on Monk. I hope it happens. I really do.

Next thought: F*(&%*^$*)*( NOVAK!
Are you kidding me? how awful were the 37 yarder and the kickoffs? I just don't understand how a team that had playoff asperations before the year started could go into this shabingus with a terrible kicking situation.

'Yeah hon, the car is all packed. Kids are in there and we've got the tent...yup it's all set...No, I know the car doesn't have a windshield, we can just pick one up that another car discards along the way...'

Biggest thing to take away from this contest was the physical play of our O-line. They have been pooptastic many weeks but have been awesome against two filthy front 4s (J-ville and Carolina). Hard to figure.

Posted by: ArtMonkToTheSticks | November 27, 2006 9:48 AM

A couple of encouraging points, if I may... We won this game because the YOUNG guys made plays!

Campbell - 1st down run, TD passes to ARE and Cooley, calling the right play when the headset went down

Taylor - Reaper-like presence all day over the middle, INT of Delhomme in the final minute (although, major props to the D-line for being in his face all day)

Rogers - Looks like Carlos got his heart back. I was very disappointed in some of his comments after the TB game and general lack of effort on the field. Someone got into his ear, but good! A completely different player this week.

Cooley - What can you say, this guy is a BALLER... Anytime he touches the ball something great can happen. And his enthusiasm, we can only hope, is contagious.

Betts - Kept banging away behind the O-line and Sellers... 24 rushes for 104... not a bad day's work.

This game just showed what is possible with these guys if given the chance... are we going to see Rocky next?

For all of this team's shortcomings, what I saw from the youngsters yesterday was very encouraging, as long as the coaches don't break their spirit.

Posted by: FromTheICU | November 27, 2006 9:56 AM

Jason, I will abide the new BLAW, but only b/c talking about it might otherwise disturb the jinxed NFC (and jinxed NFC wild card race). [Note to JaLaC: I was the disturbed, but enthusiastic Skins fan with the yellow hat and wire rimmed glasses trying to get your attention in the box just after the second kneel by Souper at the end ... I had wanted you to mention something, but I'll get to that.]

On the NFC jinx, there was a Cowboys fan sitting behind me yesterday (I never understood why this guy came to Redskins games only to heckle them when Dallas was playing somewhere else at the same time). He was genuinely impressed by some of the play AND he was rooting for the Skins. It occurs to me that he needs for teams like the Skins to spoil other NFC teams WC chances to falter ... and for the Skins to prevail over NYG (injured beyond belief) and Philly (McNabbless Shambles).

I read through the entire thread following Jason's post about inactive players to see what fans at home were thinking/feeling. I can tell you that, at the game, the mood was NOTHING like the thread yesterday.

For the coin toss, I got a nervous feeling when Jimoh was the ST captain. Jimoh who? Special teams play, esp. on field position, was SOLID. Yes, the first half was a punt fest, but in the pre-game, I could tell that the Panther's guy had no hang time and that Frost was booting for glory. To me anyway (and I don't think this was just the $6 Budweisers), we seemed to be moving the ball in our direction by btwn 2-6 yards for the battle of the three and outs.

Next, and maybe only b/c I noticed him after that first pick, Vernon Fox had a tremendous day in coverage. Like the talk about Jason, I think yesterday was a snapshot of the "future" in the secondary. Fox and Taylor, Fox and Marcus, Fox and Springs, all clicked. Fox might be one of those Grilliams-type players who can be raised in the scheme and step up his play. [Reminder: He led Detroit in special teams play last year. I know, Detroit. Still.]

Three reasons we shut down the Panthers' O in the first half. First, Foster-less running game stopped and stopped early. D'Angelo Williams was rendered worthless. Could not be relied on for two yards a carry. Second, maybe it was the Bud, but Steve Smith seemed double covered, and most times was BLASTED coming off the line of scrimmage (maybe it was a zone coverage, but the blaster - Springs - didn't seem like the main coverage guy). Between the corners, the only real passing opportunities were the dink/dunks to Keyshawn and Goings in the flat. Third, the Return of the Swagger! After stopping SO MANY third downs, the D-line was actually DANCING and taunting Carolina in the huddle. This created a feed back loop with the crowd. EVERY Panthers third down was a roar.

And THEN, on the Jumbo-tron (and this is the part I wanted you to mention Jason), the camera had a close up of a fan with a monkey puppet. The monkey was made to cheer, but as Delhomme stepped under center, the monkey went crazy. It was like this things was mast%*b#ting. The crowd was in a frenzy and result was that Delhomme inevitably had to try BBM-like arm audibles that seemed to say "pass off, Skins covering too much on pass, we're switching to run," and the run would get stuffed. The D-line was having fun and the crowd rewarded with a louder roar.

It was the first game in a while where the crowd actually seemed to make the home field advantage pay off. Why? I think b/c everyone is showing up to watch "the future" (everyone around me seemed to have resigned themselves to a losing season), plus it was a beautiful day to be outside.

Thoughts:

1. Any idea why the Reaper plays punt defense? I love the man (including his 60 yard pass to the stands after his game-ending goal line interception), but he is a penalty machine. The one thing that struck me as great was improvement in his pass coverage. [Instead of whiffing something and getting a penalty on the next play, he just didn't whiff.]

2. It SEEMED that Souper was losing his composure (but only a little) in that sometimes he got too into it. Some of those missed passes were overthrown. The receivers are going to need to adjust to the speed of Jason's passes. Lloyd was dropping them because he's gotten used to a season-full of Brunell lobs (as opposed to Campbell bullets). [Souper actually was picked twice, both for lots of yards, but one was called back. The price for throwing long.]

3. Blocking TE blues are over. Now that Yoder (who, I noticed, is fast) had demonstrated he has the hands to catch, we have documented dual threat at TE. Pucillo (back up center) was in for at least four plays as a blocking TE. The announcer says "Number 62 is eligible", the lady next to me asks "for what?" Kozlowski also had a catch. That was nice... but not as nice as Cooley over the middle (which as almost as nice as a having a QB willing to throw over the middle).

4. Penalties under control. Big difference in the league leaders this week.

5. Who was the star of the game? No one, really. That's why they won. Statistically, the Panthers won on first downs, total yards, passing yards, punt/kick return yards & return average, and time of possession. Even so, the Skins maintained the momentum game all day.

6. Random: Super Bowl curse? I'm thinking maybe Holmgrem was right about the officiating. Maybe the Seahawks really did win that last Super Bowl. What's happening to the Steelers?

Skinz, thanks for your thoughts.

QFB, my heart has been broken numerous times, it just hurts, hurts so much...

Side Note: They need to bring in some competition for Novak. I know he is a local kid but he is too inconsistent. He is going to single handedly lose a game or even the season and break my heart...

Posted by: John From Herndon | November 27, 2006 10:00 AM

you've talked about the liklihood that Archuleta gets the boot after this season, what about the same with Lloyd? His cap number is lower I blieve and he's been just as bad.

Posted by: Jake | November 27, 2006 10:00 AM

All because we didn't have a lot of sacks does not mean there is no pass rush. Golston, Griffin, Carter, and Daniels all got back there in Delhomme's face and obviously affected some of his passes. Those are just as good as a sack.

As for Campbell, I am extremely impressed and excited about him and his development thus far. The way he rebounded after that pick was great. It is just nice to see our quarterback step up into the pocket, deliver the ball knowing he is going to take a hit. He has also had some issues with drops and he handles it very well. If he can continue to play like this the coaches and his teammates will gain even more confidence in him and we can start opening things up a bit more. He is definitely a reason to be excited.

Posted by: Bryan | November 27, 2006 10:11 AM

John From Herdon,

Yes, the 'Skins are like that abusive lover that you keep going back to because you long for the days when things were good and just when things look like they'll turn around.... SLAP!

Oh... I think I've said too much.

Posted by: QFB | November 27, 2006 10:13 AM

you've talked about the liklihood that Archuleta gets the boot after this season, what about the same with Lloyd? His cap number is lower I blieve and he's been just as bad.

Not quite. Part of the reason why Lloyd's been bad is because BenchedMark was stinking up the joint for much of the year. I'd give him a few more games with Chunky Souper before I discount him completely. Archubingas, on the other hand, has consistently made game-compromising mistakes on a regular basis - we can see where that path is going....

Posted by: FlimFlam | November 27, 2006 10:15 AM

Got to work on the 3 and outs. The field position from the start was too darn good. The Kid does look unflappable, and throwing over the middle was a no-no for #8 because of the likelihood of throwing a pick. Like a qb that can tuck it and move while at the same time looking down field instead of side to side.

JT should play ahead of BLloyd, but too much $ being paid to the rapper. With Thrash in, he's got a knack for getting open, and The Kid likes throwing to him. B should of caught that long go route last week.

4-5 fumbles and all recovered. I'm a half full guy, but that was a bit scary.

Rogers reaching out in front of Keeshawn in the end zone stopped a sure td. I'm givin' major props for that one.

Shawn, you shut #89 down, but you should have turned sooner for that ball. Great catch but you got size on that Smurf.

Archie has to be the rat because everyone else is getting playing time. Sellers took the blame for the missed blocking assignment, but the tape shows Archie looking for rain.

Nick, the inconsistency on fg's and the short kickoffs have kept you off the regular roster for most teams. I'm an '80 Terp bro, but you're killin' me.

Late.

Posted by: Coolio | November 27, 2006 10:16 AM

Carlos Rogers and Sean Taylor played like we knew they were capable of. Hopefully they can consistently play at that level. You could definitely see a different Taylor out there yesterday which leads me to believe there has been someone tinkering with over the course of the season that led to his inconsistencies. Fox played solid and perhaps that helped Taylor a bit since he is used to covering the entire defensive backfield by himself. Anyhow, it was a standout performance by a fired up defense that I hope can continue. By the way, I know the guy takes a lot of heat but Holdman made some good plays yesterday. Also Andre Carter stepped up and made some plays that don't stand out on the stat sheet but made a big impact on the game. He is improving against the run and seem to be all over the place yesterday.

Posted by: Bryan | November 27, 2006 10:18 AM

Jansen gets a game ball huh?

I'd hope that would go to Carlos. Jansen played solid, thankfully, as both trenches were held if not won across the board. But Carlos...finally played a Champ Bailey game. When Champ left I was VERY distraught, excited to get CP, but nervous losing the best CB in the biz. Between Carlos and Shawn, we all hoped he'd be replaced. No way. Carlos got BURNT last week and really came back with heart this week. IF (I hate if's, especially at 4-7) he plays that way consistently, with Reaper support, it's a different D.

How about that D-Line too? AC with quickness. My favorite stat of the game was the commentators mentioning Julius is down to 260 lbs. Thought this was complete irony considering AC has been called undersized all season. Bottom line - no excuse to not have a legitimate shot at 3 wins. Eagles = DONE. Giants = DONE. Falcons = DONE. JC finishes the season 4 & 3 ready for next year.

or we can roll over and go for a lottery pick. I'm good either way.

Oh, AND HOLD ON TO THE FRIGGIN PIGSKIN!!! No wonder they were happy bout the win. 5 lost balls? Is that right? If Jack Bauer can survive a Chinese prison, you can hold on to the football.

One other point. Should have never come down to one more possession for the Panthers. Need another first down, or run as much clock keeping the ball in play. A couple stupid penalties and we're third and 17, and throw an incompletion to stop the clock. Not to whine, but better clock mgt should be on Santa's wish list.

really enjoyed seeing folks back to doing their thing yesterday. The Cooley touchdown is one of the better moments this year and may serve as a detterent to folks going too nuts on blitzes.

I agree w/ JLaC's BLAW on playoff talk - think Jim Mora . . .

Hate to say this, but cowboys might be best team in the division - at least we beat them. That alone makes this year worthwhile!

Posted by: skinsfan@8KaboveMSL | November 27, 2006 10:31 AM

All Jason Campbell haters should be blogbanished! The kid is gutsy, strong, calm and a good teammate. Did you see the way he propped up Cooley after his drop? And look how that worked out!

Speaking of Cooley, he is our only Pro Bowler and if he doesnt go its a crime.

Positive signs from yesterday are Rodgers play, the D-Line finally pressured a QB, and is it me or did Andre Carter play his best game he seemed to be around then action, JC's redzone ability is a big plus going forward and Betts was a beast.

This season has sucked, but at least yesterday we got to bring another preseason favorite down into our level of blown expectation misery...

The win on Sunday showed that the Redskins can put together mostly one game's worth of physical, passionate play. However, they remain a team in almost total disarray. Evidence? If a 4-7 record is not enough, then check out this article by Tom Friend of ESPN: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?id=2672668

This article was the talk of Comcast's Postgame Live show after the game. It is absoultely devastating in its critique of the team's coaching staff and front office structure.

I love the Redskins, and have for more than twenty years. I thought that Gibbs returning would finally set right the chaos that started right after Gibbs' first tenure ended in 1993. This article shows that the Gibbs II record of 20 wins and 23 losses over 2 1/2 seasons is no fluke. This team's very structure, its foundation, is rotten to the core.

And it goes to show how success in football is not due to one person like Gibbs.

Hail to the Redskins, whatever that really means means anymore. Hey, I'll go down with the ship!

"We can chalk this one up to Archibingus because I have a feeling he leaked the information about the defense and Greg Williams. "

I don't think it was Archuleta. One of the quotea talked about what "we" did last year. However, in the "Gregg Williams, I don't understand. They're so arrogant around here, they think they can stop the run in Cover 2. When it's an obvious running down, he calls Cover 2. " quote, he says "THEY'RE" so arrogant--like something an outsider or newcomer would say and AA is a supposed runstopper, who would have an issue with the way a coverage is called to stop the run.

Comments on Campbell: obviously a better arm than Brunell, but he had Brunell numbers before CC's long catch and run (52 total freakin' yards); they raved about how little brother Manning was unflappable and now it's being said he has no passion, doesn't care, and can't inspire the team.

JLC,

I appreciate your blog and columns each week, and know you're man enough to own up to your own infelicities, so ...

In the interest of fairness, do you still think Vernon Fox is a dog and Archuleta has been treated all that unfairly? Fox played pretty well--better than Archuleta has all year, and Archuleta let a lineman (!) run straight to the punter on his one and only duty!

took some time off the blog. good to be back. You guys are great but I don't think I'm going to go through and read every comment like before. Too time consuming and it started to not be fun. Jason, you're still my inside scoop guy though. I'll put on the proverbial fisticuffs for you anyday. Thought: good point on not being emotionally invested in the game. I was in Minnesota visiting family and guess what was on Sunday afternoon instead of my beloved Redskins? Vikings-Cardinals. Sure, Den Green was back in the twin cities, but besides that... the game was torture. UFTA! as they say in northern MN.

Thanks for saying how lowsy a game it was. I was about to ask if there was some way I could watch it, but I think I'll just take the W and look forward to Redskins-Falcons.

Any Dukes fans out there? Tough loss Saturday night. Youngstown State embarrassed our pass defense. #20 looked a lot like Carlos Rogers out there against that Peterson cat. Good grief. Oh and what is with the whole "sub-division championship" shabingus? Is there no longer D-1 AA? Is the NCAA getting a hint that a playoff is the way to go? JMU got screwed with their bracket placement and even more screwed they got the #4 seed in the 1st round, but they lost and thats the beauty of a playoff. No sour grapes. They straight up lost. Sucks to be you Florida/Michigan. There's always March Madness.

Hi,

Where is all the talk of the Tom Friend article in earlier posts, as Megskin said? I clearly missed it (sorry for the repitition), but I do not see any J La C blog postings about the article. Are discussions of it buried in comment sections somewhere? Its a major piece, and deserves more than just being kicked around in the comment section of a blog - it deserves its own posting here. Considering J La C posts so many other articles (see "Skins Flunk Economics" from earlier this week) and even reader's comments, why no posting on this?

Nice win for the Redskins. The young guys played well, as did the vets like Griffin, Spring, Sellers, and Jansen. The defense finally played like we thought they would from the get-go.

This is a strange team. Seems like they need outside forces, specifically very negative articles in national publications, before they decide to perform. One should hope that wouldn't be necessary to motivate pro athletes. Let's just hope Gibbs remembers where he keeps the whip.

P Diddy got me thinking last night...
here's the cool aid you need to be drinkin' if you want to believe this season will amount to more then a set of middle of the pack draft picks . . .

Cowboys beat ATL, NYG and PHL
Jint's also lose to NO and Wash (8 losses)
iggles also lose to Wash and CAR (8 loses)
CAR loses to ATL and NO (7 loses)
MIN loses to CHI and the Jets (8 loses)
SF loses to NO, SEA and Denver (9 loses)
ATL also loses to Wash (8 loses)
STL loses to Wash and CHI (8 loses)
GB loses to SEA tonight and CHI (8 loses)

and of course, the most difficult "IF", the skins win out . . .

talk about mediocrity, the more I look at this the more I start thinking that an NFC team may make it in w/ a losing record. GASP!

Isn't it obvious now that Peter King had a deal where he'd only vote for Monk after his guy, Carson, got in? Whatever, doesn't matter why. Just do the right thing, King, and vote for Monk.

Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | November 27, 2006 11:25 AM

Nick may have to go at the end of the season?

Are you kidding me. Just because the dude went to UMD he is getting a major pass. He is a 50% accurate kicker with a weak leg, bottom of the leauge in kickoffs and has a realistic shot of missing every 35 yarder he lines up for.

CUT HIM NOW!!!

Relative to the others at their position Brunell, Carter, Holdman, and Archuletta are pro-bolwers compared to Nick.

Go root for the Terps in Saturdays!

Another solid game for Jason Campbell. Numbers weren't pretty but he did enough to win the game. If that isn't enough for some of you that want to get picky and criticize then go jump on another team's bandwagon. It's called patience. The kid's learning now as he has played his only second meaningful game. To recognize the position he was in and do what he did yesterday on that pass to Cooley is a startling (in a good way) sign of how mature he already seems to be. If he continues that and gets familiar with the receiving corps. each week..it will be pretty.

As for ESPN article...it's come and gone now. Honestly whoever the player was they'll deal with the matter internally. It's ashame to hear the dissension that seems to be taking place. Although Sunday none of that was evident. Nice to see the return of the D..let's hope they make it consistent.

Let's hope they can turn this around and make a nice run to finish the year. Some of you have said with sarcasm and some with actual hope that the playoffs may still be a chance. Mathematically...yes. Realistically: HOW ABOUT INSERTING JIM MORA'S FAMOUS REFERENCE TO THE PLAYOFFS DURING HIS PRESS CONFERENCE HERE!!!! :)

It would be nice to see the team have a chance and with as whacked out as the NFC is again this year who knows.

All that matters is this the Falcons come to town next week. Mr. Flick the hometown fans off is the QB. The defense better be ready to bring it again. To all the Skins fans that were at the game yesterday that post on here....AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME. Way to make that stadium rock as usual. You'll be needed again next week. Keep it up for a Skins fan here in sunny Florida. :)

Gotta love the first post (not enough guts to mention thier name).

At this point, I don't care about the completion %. All I care about is wins and losses. Soups won yesterday and looked pretty good doing it. Besides, give the kid a break, he is only in his second season and does not have two of his best offensive weapons healthy (Moss and Portis)! He will get much better.

Another thing about the Skins running game ... they pounded rather relentlessly on the Julius Peppers' side of the line. I'm thinking maybe it was to keep the returning injured stud vet tired. They couldn't get much off the other side of the line. Seems like a good idea with the benefit of hindsight.

Posted by: dcsween | November 27, 2006 11:32 AM

While I am in a rnat about the QB position. I am so sick of that Dope (aka Boofer, aka Resdskins Suck) comparing the success of Romo to Campbell. Romo has been in the league for 4 years and Campbell only 2. Also, Romo has seen the field during the past four years and, at times did not look so good. It is rediculus to think that a QB will not go through growing pains and Campbell will turn out to be just as good (if not better) than Romo.

Posted by: BT | November 27, 2006 11:35 AM

Jason, any reaction at Redskins' part to Peter King's decision to now support Art Monk's HoF bid? How big of a hand does Gibbs have in this? And does he hope to have a legacy of putting a lot of his first run people into the hall by coming back (perhaps Grimm, Green and Jacoby next?)

Posted by: Icarus | November 27, 2006 11:37 AM

"for some of you that want to get picky and criticize then go jump on another team's bandwagon"

I'll speak for all us who are "critizing". It's called managed expectations. If you don't when you are a fan of the redskins then you end up like John From Herndon with a bad ticker and emotionally shattered.

The guy threw for like 140 yards and some people are acting like he's the second coming of of Joe Montana.

For all you people who tell others to go root for another team because we critisize; just stop the nonsense, drink your kool-aid and get your boo-hoo boxes ready.

I have to agree with Sec 126. There is no way Novak should continue to be the kicker for the Redskins. He seems to be a good guy, but he just isn't that accruate and does not have that strong of a kick. One of two can keep you around, but neither gets you cut.

Someday, I hope the team and the region will do something nice for Joe Gibbs as a tribute. But at the end of this season, St. Joe and anyone else associated with this 1970s version of a 1980s offense should be sent to a nice peaceful place where they can impress the other residents by displaying their 14-year-old Super Bowl rings. The Skins finally have a QB who has muscle as well as agility--a sports car trade-up after years of slogging through traffic in the family vistacruiser. Unfortunately, we still have a travel planner whose idea of excitement means driving us down to Stuckey's for a pecan log. And by the way, no one--repeat, no one in a Redskins uniform--on either side of the ball--should be doing anything like celebrating, chest thumping, sky pointing, ball spinning or other exhaltation after accomplishing what they should have been doing on a much more regular basis all season. You want to celebrate a sack or pick or TD? Do it in the Superbowl where we can all enjoy it together. Otherwise, you're guys at a party with lampshades on your heads.

Skinz most time I am in agreement with you. However, on this one I am not.

I do not recall anyone saying that Campbell was Montana. All we are saying that he looks good with just two games under his belt. (at least that is my point of view) He looks much better than Brunell and showed improvement. At this point (once again second game) that is all you can ask for.

Was at the game in row 1 Dream Seats right behind the O-Line's bleacher section of the Redskins' bench (parents won the tix in a charity auction). After the Reaper's interception, I think the camera followed him out of bounds and after he threw the ball into the stands he gave me a big high-five. Did the camera catch it?

Another heart-attack win at home. Campbell is the man. A few drops kept his numbers low. The ball was squirting out of our hands all day...it was crazy.

And ROMO was a undrafted FA. SOUP was a 2 1st & 3rd rd pick from a big time college!!(3 high draft picks)ROMO is leading QB in the league!!BTW nice win and thanks for giving Panthers another loss!!

There are two things we know so far about Jason Campbell:

1. He can play better than Congressman-elect Shuler (our last first round pick QB) ever could
2. He is the best QB on the roster right now

There are further things we know about the NFL:

1. Do you want Cleveland's QB situation?
2. Detroit's?
3. Philadelphia's?
4. Miami's?

Etc.

What we have with Campbell is hope. Hope that this ludicrous revolving door at the single most important position on the team is at an end. Hope for some consistency under center.

Skinz:
With all due respect. I'm not a fan of Kool-Aid like I use to be LOL nor do I need a boo-hoo box.

As a journalist I know about managed expectations. Sure it wasn't a pretty game but I see where you're coming from for anyone who is making him out to be the second coming of Montana. But some of the criticism of him..please..c'mon he's played a grand total of TWO games. TWO!!!!! My point is if people are going to criticize and have nothing good to say along with the criticism then go root for a team where they don't have to wait for a QB to develop because they already have someone solid and playing well in the league.

As you said..it's called managed expecations. I also call for patience too. It's one thing to criticize now. Get back to me at the end of this year or next year at this time and if the kid hasn't shown any sigs of further maturation then by all means criticize. The kids's played two games. Patience.

Hail.

Redskins Suck:
If I was in the league 4 years and hadn't played yet you'd think a guy would be able to come off and play pretty solid. Props to Romo for the job he's doing no doubt. But don't go comparing him to Campbell. THERE IS NO COMPARISON. Now if Campbell came in at the same time as Romo and sat around for 4 years and just took over this year..that's a fair comparison.

Get a clue. Go find someone else's message board to post your ramblings on. Or try to think long and hard in that brain of yours to come up with a post that actually has a real point.

I just hope now that the "Friend" article and what you wrote about Clark helps straighten out the organization. Even if they don't admit it, there's still issues at Redskin Park. Crazy thing is we've talked about most of that article on here.

Maybe by next year they will have it figured out. Maybe we'll have the "old" Joe Gibbs back. :)

I love what the kid has done so far. I also recognize he's been without his #1 reciever. I thought Boz's piece was spot on, basically saying at this point i have alot more faith that he'll do the right thing than some 8 year vets.

If I had to grade the kid right now it'd be and Incomplete. I just haven't seen enough and less than 300 yards in 2 games is hardly stellar. Now I'm willing to say that they are taking it slow and it's playcalling fine.

What we haven't seen is when they fall behind and he is forced to throw against nickel and dime packages. That is when any QB earns his paycheck.

Finally, and perhaps this is built up from many posts throughout the season but I hate when someone has something negative to say while being constructive and people tell them to switch teams.

At this point if you are on this blog and you aren't Boof/Redskins Suck you are probably a huge fan because you don't come here for the bragging rights.

Man, folks need to lighten up... Lay off the folks who aren't plugged into the blog every minute of the day!

J.C. has looked good. Don't forget how many dropped passes the guy has had to deal with (this is amplified by the underachieving receiving corp). He would have had a 70-80yrd touchdown on his first NFL throw if Lloyd wasn't doing the offensive version of Arch-Deluxe... He's managed the game without the team's best running back, it's best wide receiver not there or barely there, and his only INT was a 50+ yrd punt. Reality check folks, Campbell's got game.

To Boofer/Redskins Suck: imagine how great Romo's season if he didn't have Terry Glenn and TO and Julius Jones healthy... I'm not saying Campbell is Joe Montana, just saying be realistic.

Art Monk needs to be in the HoF, all I have to say on that subject...

Wait on playoff talk until/if/when the Skins reach .500!!!

1. He can play better than Congressman-elect Shuler (our last first round pick QB) ever could

All true. Almost. Ramsey was also a first-rounder (30th or 32nd overall, I can't remember). Campbell also appears to be better than Ramsey.

Not a criticism, just a question: anybody else notice Campbell's weird squat behind center? When he settles in, he seems to fold up his left leg in what looks like a very uncomfortable way. I guess this is a function of Jason being SOOO TALL. Anyway, his poise is obvious, and no way Brunell makes that read, finding ARE in traffic in the end zone, most probably because by that point he would either have thrown the ball away or have been lying on the ground underneath Peppers or Rucker.

I know I'm about 20 hours late on this, but doggone it, I was delighted to see our boys wearing their proper uniforms: white jerseys with BURGUNDY PANTS.

Let this signal the end of the white-on-white unis, please. Raise your hand if you disagree, and we'll have a customer service representative with you momentarily to slap the back of your head.

And what was even better, of course, was watching the team live up to those beautiful uniforms and all the glory the represent to our weary eyes. Not that this was a perfectly played game. Far from it. But from my perspective atop a Portland barstool, I was so proud I almost shed a tear. Soupy, Cooley, O-line, Bettsy, Springs, Taylor, even whipping boy Carlos, had huge games. Randy and big Mike crushing people around left end for a big power run, wow wow wow. Good stuff!

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | November 27, 2006 12:24 PM

I noticed how low he squats. It's pretty funny it looks like he could just fall backwards at any time.

That big wind-up needs to go too. That's going to lead to alot of swatted balls and strips. That can wait until the off-season however.

Posted by: Skinz | November 27, 2006 12:25 PM

jonathan, the league is full of backups who have sat for more then 4 yrs and SUCK! ROMO is a special QB and his play on the field cant be denied!!And he didnt cost 2 1st rd picks and 3rd!!that could have been 3 very good players for you guys!BTW you wouldnt know what a good point looked like you CLOWN!!!

Posted by: Redskins Suck | November 27, 2006 12:29 PM

Thanks Mego. Gots to get me a poopy sammy on Wonder bread. Yum.

Mike Sellers: run blocking D-9 and clear out a my way runner. Wears dudes down. Love that dude. Sean is the G Reaper, but Sellers is THE PUNISHER.

Oh, has anyone talked about Friend's piece. Ugh.

Posted by: Coolio | November 27, 2006 12:34 PM

Redskins Suck, dude, get a grip... he's played well so far through really good circumstances... You sound ready to annoint Romo as the second coming, and he's not even had to deal with losing any of his supporting cast. Wait until he's won in the playoffs to talk about how special he is. BBM still hasn't even won a SB yet!

Posted by: Gregarious | November 27, 2006 12:34 PM

Suck,

Romo has looked good, but he's only played 5 games. He didn't cost you any draft picks and that is incredible if you can get a good qb for no draft picks.

All that said.....it's got nothing to do with JC. Does it? Nope didn't think so, bub-bye now.

Posted by: Skinz | November 27, 2006 12:37 PM

There's been a drastically under-reported aspect to Sunday's W:

The Red Pants

Let's retire the Whites for now.

Posted by: Clinton Hill | November 27, 2006 12:38 PM

Boofer you loser. For all the talk about Romo (and he looks good so far) he did lose to our team. He was on the bench for 4 years under one system. Campbell been in the league for 1 1/2 under two system. Please think (I know it almost impossible for you) 5 times before you speak.

Posted by: jm220 | November 27, 2006 12:44 PM

Suck,
Oooooo I'm a clown. Yay I guess I should feel hurt. Yea the method to acquire Campbell was not the smartest way. The front office braintrust leaves a lot to be desired. That could've been three good players. I still don't see what your point is. Campbell is here now. You can't change what it cost to get him. So now the guy's going to get his chance.

Sure there are several back ups that have been in here far longer and have not been as good as Romo has been. In case you didn't read the earlier post close enough..I gave him credit. It's funny you have no problem calling everyone on here clowns but it's how you come across on here that makes you more than just a clown. You crack me up.

Mea culpa. I totally forgot about Patrick. Really nice guy, a choir boy, really. Sadly, not so good a QB.

Posted by: Redskins Suck | November 27, 2006 12:57 PM

!he did not lose to your team !! it was him who drove his team in 30 seconds to 17 yd line!!

Like I said Boofer think 5 times before you speak. Was he the starting QB for the game? Did your team lose? Answer to all is yes and you even state in your post that he was playing QB.

Posted by: jm220 | November 27, 2006 12:57 PM

Just had an awesome conversation with a Packers fan. I welcomed them to Seattle and then gave them a crash course on how to order at Starbucks. If you want to fit in like a local around here, you need to try and check off every box.

For example:

Decaf Venti Soy Extra Hot Raspberry Mocha with no Whipped Cream

Just as an example. Not that I would ever drink that. I like the Almond flavor.

Posted by: P Diddy | November 27, 2006 1:06 PM

Skinz said What we haven't seen is when they fall behind and he is forced to throw against nickel and dime packages. That is when any QB earns his paycheck.

OK,OK

and how will he run a 2-minute offense with the game on the line?

ICEMAN - that is what JC seams ... ice under pressure - the ICEMAN! No doubt ICE will continue to mature, the game will slow down even more, and a string of 300+ yard games will follow.

*hugs*

Rennypolis - thanks for the link to the Friend story - didn't see the blog comments on it over the holidays. It pretty much confirms a lot of what's been said (repeatedly) about Double G's arrogance on this blog for weeks/months. The question is whether the D will respond (yesterday's game may be an indication that they will) or has he lost them and will Gibbs do something about it this offseason. The info about the corners and safeties having separate meetings is most troubling and telling about having too many chiefs.

On a positive note it was nice to see JC get his first victory - wasn't pretty but so what.

Posted by: skinswest | November 27, 2006 1:07 PM

Couple of Comments.

Carlos Rogers - finally had a decent football game... after 2 years.

Brandon Lloyd - While not impressive actually was wide open on a crossing route near the end zone and Campbell totally overthrew him in the first half.

Jason Campbell - Loved his composure however did not play a fabulous game. Missed some throws but made some as well.

Kedric Golston - Love this kid. Got consistent pressure and was solid against the run. Possibly a decent late round draft pick by the organization.

Rocky McIntosh - What's it going to take to start this kid?

Hopefully the defense keeps it going next week.

1 tccl - for me disappearing from teh blog...but this has been way too depressing for me!!!

4 tccls - for the Defense yesterday...where has that been all season?

4 tccls - to grilliams for his masterful defensive strategy yesterday...not attacking the QB finally paid off...but thats b/c Delohme is a QB that thrives with blitzing and quick decisions...annoucers were saying the skins plan was not to blitz, give him just enough time to think and hessitate and get some delayed pressure from the front four as thats where he struggles...worked great yesterday! but hopefully they change their strategy to the team and qb at hand and EXECUTE again...different approach for Vick for sure...

5 tccls and my game ball - to carlos rodgers...will the real CR please stand up!!! hopefully more to come...still wish the guy could hit!!!

5 tccls - to JC...keep it going and keep developing...sure looks like the QB of the future...

5 tccls - to the offensive line...yet again another where the heck has that been all year comment???

5 tccls - to the burgundy pants...it must be the pants!!!

5 tccls - to another end of season run!!!

5 tccls - to those that still BELIEVE!!!

1 tccl - for me if i broke any BLAWs!!!

I love Tony Romo. Hard-working dude who earned his starting spot. It would be great if the 'Skins/Cowboys rivalry were back in full force, with serious games and great coaching. In the NFL, success starts under center, so if the Cowboys and 'Skins can be patient and develop these two young guys, that'll only mean great games down the line for all of us. Which means fewer of these damn snoozers like yesterday.

Skinz - we are thinking alike today. My thoughts exactly but you said it quicker than lil'ol me. I should play hooky from work sooner ...

Yep, the 9 step drop (Is that an Al Saunders-thingy or JC's) and the pitcher wind-up is going to get more than a few blocked throws and the split-second in time for the D-back to make a break for the ball.

(clear sign of a loser)Unlike you we give credit where credit is due. We all have said Romo has look good this far. Yet, you have continue to try to bring Campbell down. Instead of saying yes the kid look good for two starts. (once again clear sign of a loser)

JC is Iceman! With the game on the line, possibly the last possession, down by 3 points, in his FIRST home field start, then his helmet malfunctions!! (Is that like a Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction?) This right after he took a chance the previous possession and threw into 1-on-1 coverage ... the odds were on ICEMAN's side with the throw ... but, alas, the D-back saw the throw to soon and got into position first ...

All of that going on in ICEMAN's head ... and what does he do? He's Ice.

*hugs* to Iceman. Well done!

P Diddy, you're reminding me how jealous I am of the Seahawks for having a stadium within easy walking distance of downtown, right in the heart of the city. I could have walked there from my house when I was living in SEA, but I wasn't compelled to do so by any of the games in the early part of this season.

So once again, boo on FedEx being out in the wilds of Maryland! Not that RFK was easy walking distance of downtown, but it really did feel like being in the city. Oh, yeah, and having the Metro station right across the street was nice.

BURGUNDY PANTS. 'Nuff said.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | November 27, 2006 1:28 PM

I am an unabashed Seattle hater, but even I must admit that Qwest Field is pretty nice. And, you're right, conveniently located. I'm a 10 minute walk from the gate myself.

As usual, I gave my extra tickets to one of my bartenders on Saturday night. Not sure if I'm going to go, though. I'm a Californian these days, through and through. If it's below 40 degrees, I'm not interested. Seattle today is 35 degrees with (strange, for these parts) snow flurries.

Okay nice thing to say about BLloyd - he did some nice body picks and shoves on the Cooley TD run.

P Diddy, sfskin, Nate in the PDX representing on the West Coast.

The teams out here make it easy to continue rooting wholeheartedly for the Skins. Even from 3000 miles away, our astonishingly bad season is far more interesting to me than anything happening in SEA, SF or OAK. Though that Frank Gore really is something.

Here's hoping for the Skins appearing in a stadium near us in '07.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | November 27, 2006 1:56 PM

Boof you are grasping at straws trying to criticize Campbell. Much easier to criticize Brunell.

As for the other teams having video of campbell... I don't think that will help them much. He avoids pressure, can run and spreads the ball to every receiver, RB, and TE on the field. There isn't really too much that other teams can key on with Campbell. He hasn't made too many mistakes. All the video footage will tell them is that Campbell can do it all. He really hasn't exposed any blatant weaknesses yet.

Wow, how nice would it be if Monk finally gets in to the HOF (jm220, I just read MMQB on this). I hope Peter King's coming around -- thanks to a conversation with Gibbs, among other influences -- means he'll get the votes he needs this time.

Next comes the immortal #28 (who I have to guess would still be the fastest man on our team). I think he's eligible next year, and I think we can reasonably expect he'll get in on the first ballot, right?

I'd love it if one of the Hogs could get in, with Grimm as the most likely candidate. That would be an official acknowledgment of how important the O-line was to those SB teams, and how great those guys were. But we'll take it one thing at a time, and Monk is tops on my list.

Our cheerleaders looked fantastic.

Posted by: 4th Floor | November 27, 2006 2:12 PM

Dorf - I so feel your pain. I watched that game Saturday night - the only televised JMU game this season, and they blew it. Granted, there were a couple calls that were blown by the refs (that worked in YSU's favor), but the defense could not hold YSU from driving down the field, and then we blew it in the 4th quarter by trying for the TD instead of taking the sure 3 points with the field goal. Had we gotten the field goal (which would have put us up 34-28), even if YSU scored the TD, we could have won it with a FG at the end of the game, instead of trying for the Hail Mary TD pass at the end.

Posted by: bandwagon blues | November 27, 2006 2:13 PM

Concerns still abound. But it was nice to see a win.

1. Al Saunders - does he understand that with the running game this team is meant to go down hill and not side to side? Mike Sellers and TJ Ducket are large bruising runners sending them anywhere but up the middle or through the tackles is going to lose you ground. Only Portis and Betts should run side to side.

2. Quit the gimmick plays - Stop with the multiple end arounds and double reverses- they work on occassion but not often enough - and quit inserting them on short yardage plays with 8 men up frot. Run the ball, pass the ball, go for Xth and 1 with a large back like Sellers or Duckett leading one another up the middle not sweeping to the strong side. The linebackers and safteys in this leauge are to fast for that. At the goal line hit them in the mouth with your power backs. Demoralize the front defensive line - tire them out.

3.Where in the hell is a pass rush? Last year and the year before Greg Williams was having a field day with mixing up the schemes - this year it seems to be plain vanilla rush 4 and drop the rest. No exotic blitz packages or legitimate pass rush of any kind. Unfortunatly, the backfield has suffered for it having to cover recievers for much longer then they should need to.

4.Defensive Backfield - Um - it might be nice to keep at least within 5 -7 yards of the reciever. Yesterday, I saw Carlos Rogers play 15 yards off of a reciever on a 3rd and 3 - guy ran a slant pattern - automatic first down. Please at least attempt to show that you can be physical at the line. Bump the damn recivers, hand slap with them, get a little closer at least - I can undrstand respecting a good reciever but 15 yards - c'mon!!!

5. Sean Taylor - Let this guy loose - let him hit and intimidate, blitz him on occassion - let him pound guys. This is what he did last year and he's known as an assassin out there (Watch the you-tube highlights.) This guy should be on Jacked up every week. He still has some things to learn about nfl schemes and pass coverage but recievers are already worried about getting clocked by this manimal. Let him be a presence and an attitude.

6.Jason Cambell - Like what I've seen for the past two games - yesterdays performance was a little incositant but how many balls did his recievers drop? A Win is a win even if it is not pretty. Hope to see more of him in the future.

7.Must improve the kicking game - but then again if we would call the correct plays on 3-1, 4-1 instead of the crap that gets called we might make a few more FG's within 40 yards.

GO SKINS !!!!

just heard this joke. can we laugh at ourserlves? although, it's one day later.

Tampa, FL (AP) - A seven-year-old boy was at the center of a Tampa courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be
maintained to the degree possible.

The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out that they also beat him.

After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials , the judge granted temporary custody to the WASHINGTON REDSKINS, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

(Ignore the trolls.)

I have an aesthetic inquiry about replica jerseys. I was a burgundy jersey wearer for years, first #81/MONK and then #28/GREEN, both of which were 'official' replicas.

When the time came to get a new one, I had a flash of inspiration and ordered a white #44/RIGGINS. My thinking was that no 'official' Riggo replicas were available, and I wanted one as close as possible to the one he wore during what for my money is the greatest play in Skins history, 70 Chip. (He was also wearing burgundy pants, of course.)

Now I see that the Skins are offering official Riggo replica jerseys just in time for Xmas, and they appear to be offering burgundy only. I'm guessing more people will want big bold burgundy than plain old white. Or that the team is making some a typically canny marketing decision here by offering just one color. Interesting.

So satisfying to be dwelling on minutiae such as this instead of gnashing my teeth in the wake of another brutal loss, waiting for Joe's presser.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | November 27, 2006 2:44 PM

Hey JLC,
Love the blog and your coverage of the team. That said, what's with all the B Loyd criticism? How can he be called a complete bust when he's all but ignored in the passing game? Aside from the one bad drop at the start of the Tampa game I've yet to see any problem with his hands. Are you watching some sort of coaches wide-angle shot of the field that shows him not getting open or running the wrong route? Because from my vantage point he looks like more like a wasted talent than an all out bust.

Posted by: Moe from Richmond | November 27, 2006 2:46 PM

Skinswest, thanks for the encouragement about the Friend article!

About the win yesterday: it was great because the 'skins were so physical in all phases of the game. It was refreshing to see that the offense stuck to the running game, and cut back on gimmick plays - somewhat.

However, until the 'skins string a few of these efforts together, I am not convinced that the team has "found its identity." Its not even that they need to win every game, but only play with this inspiration on a consistent basis. Until then, this game is just a momentary blip on the radar. A very nice, happy blip - but soon forgotten if the team slacks off again.

I still think there are bigger problems at R. Park that do not bode well for the next few years. I really hope to be proven wrong somehow by the Magic of Gibbs, but after 2 1/2 years (20-23 record over that span), I am slowly getting pessimistic about the organization as a whole.

I still think this story is a really, really big deal, and fills in a lot of blanks about what happened to this season. I don't see one article changing the whole team overnight into playoff contenders, though. They will revert to this season's mean of mediocrity.

This season: what a fall!

Sadly most football players have had a run in with the ugly tree and even if they haven't they have their helmets on. Still we do get some nice a$$ shots on occaison.

I say fire the secondary coaches if they can't get along.

Just finished reading "Shalimar the Clown" by Salman Rushdie, and there's a great section in there where he goes on (and on) about the Rodney King trial. In a circuitous and barely relevant manner, it reminded me of both the Boofer v. everyone else on this blog, and the 'Skins secondary coaches.

It's that time of year where it's more appropriate to suck it up and get along than it is to be a jerk, I suppose.

BTW, I am also officially sick of "I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus". "Deck the Halls" is on deck, with "Rudolph" in the hole. I can never get sick of "The Little Drummer Boy". Pa rum pum pum pum.

OK, so this Friend article has been discussed in the comment section of several Insider posts, but so far no direct posting about this by the Insider himself, JLaC. Even the D.C Sports Bog (Dan Steinberg) had a long posting about it today:
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/2006/11/espn_the_magazine_beats_the_pa.html

Why hasn't the Redskins Insider done a full post on this? There is clearly tons of interest about it...and its a really big deal, with players, journalists, fans, and even coaches now reacting to it.

What up?

I find myself barely able to tolerate the seasonal browbeating by thinking of the Family Guy versions of the songs being played.

I bring these gifts for you,
they're up in my bummmmm....
