Can The D Do it Again?

So the Skins stopped a top-notch offense in New Orleans, actually beat them up pretty good. But, like with everything related to the team, could it actually happen two weeks in a row? Will they finally build some momentum? Wish I could say for sure, but I'm going to have to wait and see.

The Rams don't have the gaudy numbers the Saints do, and their offensive style is a little more balanced than in the past and less downfield-crazed as it used to be. But Marc Bulger is the best proven QB no one talks about, Torry Holt remains a stud, they have plenty of other passing options and the RB Jackson, is a beast. He can run over just about anyone, and the melding of brawn and speed on this unit makes it tough to derail, especially at home.

They will be highly motivated, as even a 6-8 club is in the wildcard race in the unsightly NFC, and the Rams might want a lil payback for getting their faces smashed in by Skins on the carpet last December. Of course, I still think St. Louis's D will have a tough time stopping the run. Portis and Rock both went over 100 on them in that game last year - the first win of the '5-0 Or We Don't Go' stage. The way Betts is running, I'd imagine another big game for him.

So, who believes the Skins can do it - win two straight and thwart another stellar offense at the same time? I have a feeling they win the game, but I am not sure it'll be a 16-10 affair like last week. And if Marcus Washington can't go - him missing a practice means he must be really hurting - all the more reason to wonder how stout Grilliams's Gang will be.

Oh yeah, and if anyone can come up with a nifty slogan to sum up this December's run, I'm all ears (or, I suppose, eyes, in this case). I was kind of thinking - Win Three Straight, But Don't Pretend That You're Great. But I'm not married to it.

Win three in a row...even if it's just for show. :'(

win three in a row and be jealous of tony (pro bowl) romo!

I am highly intrigued by the LaRon Landry sugestion from the gov and AMTTS. As a fan I love the thought of 2 BAMF safeties killing people over the middle. Plus, the name LaRon. I was kinda expecting to see something along those lines this year, actually, with AA nad ST blowing peeps up. But my only concern with getting too excited about another safety is what the FO would be thinking. We have PP coming back, and we are gonna be taking a huge cap hit on AA, plus ST might want an extension this year...it all leads to a lot of money tied up in that position. I love the thought of it though...I guess it'll be interesting to see what happens and if the FO cares about all that. But those hits on the youtube link that Skinz posted...WOW. LaRon...I like it.

Three in a row for next year's mo...

Posted by: hailfromny | December 21, 2006 9:00 AM

Win three... just to F with the NFC!

I would just like to announce that I have made it to my fantasy playoffs this week. I don't tell you this to garner praise, although I am pretty proud as this is a tough fantasy league, but I tell you because I did it starting JC, Ladell and Cooley. Yeah that's right... they led me to the fantasy promised land.

And for good measure, I picked up Suisham as my kicker this week. He's leading kickers over the last two weeks, and he's playing in a dome. Gotta love the combo.

Best of all though, I'm playing an Eagles fan for the Superbowl title. My chances are pretty slim (he has the better team -- cough cough LT cough cough), but it will be fun to watch our game and root even harder...

HAIL!

"Win three in a row and next seasons expectations grow"

or

"Win three in a row to get Campbell into an ofensive flow"

I'm afraid the New Orleans victory has erased everyone's minds of how bad the skins actually are.

We fall into this trap every year folks- let's not get fooled again.

Posted by: BOOFER | December 21, 2006 9:40 AM

Richard Cranium, I agree with you in that this is a general "Redskins fan" trend, but the sarcasm that's dripping from these "slogans" leads me to believe that we are keeping our heads about us this time; at least in some ways.

"Let's win three,
swap first rounders with Denver
and get Lamarr Woodley!"

Posted by: Bucktown Skins Fan | December 21, 2006 9:48 AM

Hey dick cranium lighten up its the holidays, were just trying to have some fun....its football not middle east peace...I think everybody knows the score...

Posted by: Anonymous | December 21, 2006 9:50 AM

One of my aspirations after throwing in the towel for the season was that we would be some other team's spoiler for a playoff spot.
I'm not sure we quite did that for the Saints, but they don't yet have the bye week clinched. There is plenty of statitiscal room to knock both the Rams and the Giants out of the wildcard chase. My slogan: "Have a Reason, End a Season."

Posted by: dcsween | December 21, 2006 9:52 AM

RE: Slogan

How about:

Lose'em both and trade down to pick up a second rounder since we got rid of two 2nd rounders last year because we had to have an outside lb that Grilliams could sit on the bench now that Lavar is gone.

What that's not catchy? What me bitter?

Posted by: Skinz | December 21, 2006 10:00 AM

3 in a row and the giants don't go . . .

Posted by: skinsfan@8KaboveMSL | December 21, 2006 10:11 AM

For a slogan how bout:

COWBOYS ARE #1
SKINNIES PLAY LIKE "NUMBER 2"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Posted by: Anonymous | December 21, 2006 10:11 AM

Alright blog peeps, we need to stop thinking about losing these two games. We cannot and DO NOT want that!

If we do not finish close enough to Denver to swap first rounders, then we give up our third rounder -- period. WE DO NOT WANT THAT! We need to keep as many picks as possible.

Posted by: Bucktown Skins Fan | December 21, 2006 10:11 AM

How about:

"Who cares. Lets beat the Giants."

Posted by: bbtp89854726 | December 21, 2006 10:14 AM

Bucktown if we get a high enough draft pick we can trade down and pick up a second rounder. I'm not suggesting we tank but would you rather

Get a mid rounder say 17th and switch with denver to say 22nd.

or

Get the 7th pick, trade down to 18 and pick up a second rounder?

Posted by: Skinz | December 21, 2006 10:17 AM

How about....

"Three....and OUT"

I don't mean this in a negative way - it's just true as the season will be over....

Posted by: Lisa | December 21, 2006 10:19 AM

To come back to the point-

The D will be able to again. The Rams may be desperate, but there still not a good team. They don't run the ball very well and really only have Tory Holt as a threat. Could be a problem if Washington is hurt and they can't get to the QB.

But if they aren't just spouting sweet nothings to the press and really are trying to salvage some sense of pride then they may have rounded a corner psychologically especially Andre Carter who looks like he's not intimidated anymore.

They actually have some depth at D-Back, guys that have been in the system for a while and Carlos may be out of his sophmore slump.

I think the real key is whether or not the O can give the D a lead to play with. Run the ball, chew up the clock but most importantly finish the drive with 7.

Posted by: evan | December 21, 2006 10:25 AM

Skinz, in theory, I like your plan. But I think the flaw with this theory is that it assumes that the Skins will make a smart trade.

That is not an assumption I am willing to bet on.

Posted by: Bucktown Skins Fan | December 21, 2006 10:27 AM

One thing about the draft...trading down is great and I'd be happy if we did, but you have to have someone willing to trade up. It's no guarantee, even though as a fan it is easy to say. If the phone isn't ringing at that moment you can't trade down. I know this is obvious but so often you hear lengthy fan ideas about trading down and adding picks...

Posted by: WrongDog | December 21, 2006 10:28 AM

Evan,

I don't know who told you the Rams don't run the ball well. I would say that whoever did hasn't watched Jackson's 230 lbs run with 4.3 speed.

Guys got like 1200 yards running 700 yards catching and 10 td's.

Think Betts but faster with better moves.

Posted by: Skinz | December 21, 2006 10:29 AM

Bucktown,

I surrrender. It's hard to find a flaw in your argument.

Posted by: Skinz | December 21, 2006 10:30 AM

Even if we win three in a row, SO WHAT? Nothing changes in Redskins country. We have, are and will always be loosing. There is no hope people. Every year we love the redskins during the offseason and hate them during the reualr season. Please stop messing with our emotions.

Posted by: Redskins Deadskins | December 21, 2006 10:32 AM

Yep... Jackson is a beast. Can't sleep on the Rams, they can beat us quite a few ways. The only thing the Rams have done wrong this year (and since Vermeil left, really) is beat themselves. They really aren't so dissimilar from the Skins in that regard. I think the Skins are gaining momentum tho, and last week was not a fluke. You beat St. Louis with pretty much the same game plan as N.O., although I hasten to think about outcome of the N.O. game if Joe Horn had been active.

Posted by: FromTheICU | December 21, 2006 10:35 AM

Posted by: Vinbambino | December 21, 2006 12:07 PM

1) The Transformers Trailer made me antsy in the pantsy.

2) Laron Landry is naked anger (nanger).

3) I don't want to think about a slogan for this squadron. Anything clever or cutesy will ignore the lies and failures. So instead of a slogan, here is what I have:

'You lied to me, you told me we'd be good. I believed we could win division games, and take teams to the shed of wood.
You told me we'd have a parade, you said there'd be joy, instead I'm watching wins by those hated cowboys.
I don't know what to think of you, when the D steps up and plays. You're not consistent or always there, like a jumper from Jarvis Hayes.
I hope you can do better, these couple games are nice. Maybe have an approach next year, instead of just rolling the dice.

4) Stephen Jackson is nasty. Period.

5) Merry everything.

rare mid-day post for me, usually stuck in mtgs at this time of day, however, due to 2-1/2 feet of snow on the deck (w/ 4 foot drifts in some places) we are all homebound out here (hopefully).

so listening to larrymike and bram while I catch up on some e-mail and vinny says something that gives me hope that we won't be throwing huge $$'s at free agents in the off-season. . .

Vinny says something that the blognescenti have already pointed out:

a lot of teams are way under the cap and there will be a lot of money flying around in the offseason. . ."going to look like baseball"

could it be that the FO may actually focus on draft/depth?!?

one can only hope . . .

and it's about time to start thinking about who needs to decleat who this weekend. . .

Posted by: skinsfan@8KaboveMSL | December 21, 2006 12:28 PM

Take a knee! Go for three! Try some Saunders tricks, then Kick! Kick! Kick!

Posted by: Jeff Hayes | December 21, 2006 12:29 PM

Back to original question...yes the Skins D can get it done. Did anyone see the Rams quit at home against the Bears a couple weeks ago? Hester's good, but he's even better against a team that gives up. Expect ARE and Rock to have a field day on returns, maybe take one to the house, that will make up for any production out of St Louis offense. Skins 34-14.

Posted by: 1Bourbon1Scotch1Beer | December 21, 2006 12:45 PM

I was happy when St. Joe came back.
In act 1, he was the mack.

First time joy ubriddled
This time suicidal

Dare I say bring ol' ball coach back.....

ok, ok i'm kidding
but in last place we're sitting

and with danny that prick
we have scant a draft pick

and only Vinnie to do his bidding.

Posted by: Skinz | December 21, 2006 12:45 PM

Let me reassure everyone that we will be spending money this next season! We must upgrade at several key positions and building through the draft is a risky endeavor.

Win now! Win big!

Posted by: Vinbambino | December 21, 2006 12:52 PM

new post . . .

Posted by: skinsfan@8KaboveMSL | December 21, 2006 12:53 PM

The Saints were set up perfectly for us to surprise them. It was a classic trap game. On a real high after beating the Cowboys badly, in Dallas to boot, coming home 'feelin' themselves.' And the Skins could not have been perceived as much of a threat coming in. Plus, as TMQ noted, they could have been watching the scoreboard and seeing that they would win the South even with a loss, so why step it up a notch? Oh, and the Skins played really well, one of their best games of the year, AND perhaps most critical of all they were being rooted on by the blolunteers (jm220, scott, etc).

My point is that I don't expect anything like that set of happy circumstances this Sunday. The Rams actually have something to play for, even though they have arguably been as disappointing as we have.

All I ask for is Soupy to do well again, for the running game to keep it going, and for the defense to play strong and not get embarrassed.

No, I have more to ask for. Like SwissHam going 4-4 including a 60-yarder. And Rock returning a kickoff for a TD. And Cooley making a long catch and run for a TD. And Rocky making some highlight reel plays on D.

And finally, for our boys to take the field wearing the greatest uniform in the history of organized sports competition... say it with me... white jerseys with burgundy pants.

HAIL!

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 21, 2006 12:54 PM

i suggested trading down in the last thread. but i suggested it because that's what a NORMAL/LOGICAL person would do with this team with its needs. BUT the skins aren't the type to follow "Best Practices". When was the last time they came ahead in a trade?

I'm kinda following what I heard on 980 this morning. Not a news by any means but the skins keep going after high priced FA's meaning there's just one line of players. they're one deep. After the first line the drop in talent level is so steep. Not to mention that half of the high priced FA's they sign turn out to be busts.

i'm not being negative am i? anyways back to the good stuff...

i don't want that safety dude. i want someone big and fat. a couple of 'em. and one big and fast for the edges. and one posession receiver. bring in cherokee parks!

smack, i thought the NWA reaction to carmelo thingie was a knee jerk reaction. decision by people who probly think that dunking is what you do with tea and biscuits. really carmelo's been one of the least troubled players in that difficult league. if anyone saw that game you'd have wanted carmelo to go after isiah too. at least i did. and his 15 game suspension was just plain uncalled for especially when nothing was done to isiah...
