Redskins Insider, by Jason La Canfora Redskins Insider

Hawaii 5-9

We're a few hours from Pro Bowl announcements, and no one around The Park is holding his breath. Not too many bright lights in this dim season, and not many individual honors expected to go around. A year ago guys like Santana and Dolla Bill were locks, and I thought Randy Thomas was the most deserving of all Skins, and he got snubbed.

I am willing to hear out anyone making a case for a Skin this year. Personally, I think Mike Sellers is the best candidate, given his position, impact and stellar play on special teams as well as fullback. He is not nearly as active in the red-zone passing game as he was a year ago (not that it's his fault), but the guy does all the ugly things it takes to win. He brings it every week. I would like to see Rock merit some special teams consideration.

Randy and Chris Samuels had good seasons again, and Chris has been before. It seems that guys who have been there before generally have a better shot of going back. Chris Cooley has been good, too, but there are too many tight ends having bigger seasons in the NFC.

As for the defense, well. Let's not get greedy. Marcus is a very good player, but no one over there had a Pro Bowl season. A healthy Shawn Springs would be Pro Bowl worthy - that guy is ballin since he's gotten over the sports hernia - and there is no doubt that Griffin has finally been healthy the last few weeks after gutting it out much of the season.

Maybe a missed someone here (I'm sure you guys will point it out if I did). But I think it's fair to say that up here, when you're 5-9, it's going to be with No Bowlers, not Pro Bowlers.

I'd love to see Sellers get it. In my mind he's the only one who deserves it. I don't think there is a chance he gets it though.

Posted by: Skinz | December 19, 2006 1:22 PM

Had our D played just a tiny bit better, and had he planted a few more highlight reel knocks this year, the Reaper would definitely get in. I think his rep among the players is huge, giving him an edge over any other Skins. But it seems he's only emerged in full force the past few weeks as the whole defense has played better. I don't think he gets in. But I hope I'm wrong.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 1:25 PM

and double move should get in IAW his own reasoning.

Posted by: Triple Move | December 19, 2006 1:25 PM

I will stake my man cooley...who is better...Shockey? I went and voted for Cooley and Sellers a few weeks back

Posted by: chris Larry | December 19, 2006 1:26 PM

How bout Nick Novak? I remember Barno telling us something about that guy.

Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | December 19, 2006 1:28 PM

I think Cooley may get a surprise (not to Skins fans) nod. He's made big game changing plays and has a nice TD count going...

Posted by: FromTheICU | December 19, 2006 1:29 PM

I remember reading that of ALL the TEs in the NFL, Cooley was leading in yardage after the catch.

What would be nice, though the Skins didn't put him on the ballot, would be a special teams spot for Ethan Albright ... in recognition of that Madden NFL video game being wrong about him. At what he does on special teams, he is the best.

Posted by: dcsween | December 19, 2006 1:29 PM

I gotta think that Samuels is the only one with a chance--not cause I think he's most deserving (cause I don't), but they seem to love him...they being the selectors.

Posted by: WrongDog | December 19, 2006 1:30 PM

OK just checked stats for TEs....I guess Shockey Crumpler Smith and puke...Whitten..are having better years ...

BUT Cooley does lead in plays over 20 and 40 yards....an d he is not the first option like Crumpler and even shockey...

Plus Shockey is a tool who costs his team victories and locker room morale and Whitten lost his team a game to the Skins by being and A Hole and not blocking...

Cooley! Cooley!

Posted by: chris Larry | December 19, 2006 1:31 PM

Shockey and Crumpler have more yards and TD's than Cooley. It's hard to argue against them.

Desmond Clark and Cooley would be close. Given their records I'd say Clark would have the edge.

Sigh.

Witten has one TD. If you ask any coaches if they'd rather have 42 more yards or 5 more TD's they say the TD's.

Is there a spot for Personal Punt Protector? I know just the guy...

Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | December 19, 2006 1:34 PM

Cindy hilarious.

I'd prefer the "Super smart and contientious-fight your guts out , can't think of another group of guys i'd rather lose with team." though.

Posted by: Skinz | December 19, 2006 1:36 PM

espn power rankings has redskins #26 only 5 teams are worse.it also says"redskins will go hard after nate clements in the offseason because you know, signing high priced fas has worked out so well for washington"to hope this team has any pro bowlers is pure fantasy.

Posted by: leonard | December 19, 2006 1:41 PM

Def Cooley over Clark. How many cheerleaders has Clark gotten fired? Thought so.

Redskins=intanglibles

Posted by: Pub Golf | December 19, 2006 1:42 PM

Are power rankings the most worthless thing ever?

Posted by: chris Larry | December 19, 2006 1:44 PM

True true PG. Also, i heard they are taking acting skills into consideration this year as well.

"Hey isn't that Darrell Green blvd?"

Posted by: Skinz | December 19, 2006 1:44 PM

Yes they are...pure popularity contest. ALthough the dvoa ones the football outsiders do are slightly better...

Personal Punt Protector goes to $30 million Adam Ar chuletaa!!

Posted by: Fernando | December 19, 2006 1:52 PM

Any Pro-Bowl category for most "super-conscientious"?

Maybe "super-califragilistic" (expialidocious)?

Posted by: Daddy-O | December 19, 2006 1:58 PM

dcsween, great call on Albright. That red-headed freak deep snaps his guts out. That is one position we don't have to worry about. Sadly, I don't believe his name appeared on the Pro Bowl ballot I completed.

Sellers, too, is utterly deserving of a Pro Bowl slot this season. I'm doubtful about Cooley, Corny and Randy T -- if our record were better, they would almost surely be in.

But we know being utterly deserving in the eyes of a homer does not necessarily translate into a trip to Hawai'i.

If you are a stat geek then this is a great article. Breaks down alot of stats.

Props to J-La btw on the title of this thread. Did that one just fall from the sky onto your keyboard?

Also, if we are going for the best CBs hitting free agency, between Nate Clements and Asante Samuels, which one is less of a showboat "me guy"?

Posted by: dcsween | December 19, 2006 2:02 PM

Carlos Rogers thinks he had a Pro Bowl year if he would have caught a couple of those interceptions....what a jackass

Posted by: Rob | December 19, 2006 2:03 PM

Rob - While you're certainly right.... and certainly no offense to you, but the Carlos Pro-Bowl comment has been beat to death, eh?

2nd the props to JLC on the thread title.. Perfect.

Posted by: FromTheICU | December 19, 2006 2:08 PM

Sellers should definitely get a spot, he has been running over people all year, opening up holes for the RBs and playing great on special teams.

Posted by: CE | December 19, 2006 2:09 PM

I'm betting on zero players getting in. Would love to hear St. Joe's explanation for it :-)

Who watches the Pro Bowl anyway? Dumbest sports event on television.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 19, 2006 2:09 PM

St. Joe's explanation - "Our fans voted their guts out...."

Taylor and Samuels get in.

Just checked the other thread and saw jm220/Katie's pictures.

It's amazing to me that a truly great American city can be abandoned like that. It's shameful and makes you wonder how much the government would protect you were you to be stuck in another hurricane in the Gulf Coast, or a wrath of tornadoes in the Midwest, or a flood long the Mississippi, or an earthquake in California, or a volcano in the Northwest, and on and on. It makes you wonder when we Americans will begin to elect competence instead of soundbites, intellect instead of ideology, dilligence instead of negligence. Makes you wonder...

Alright, off my soapbox (again)...

Posted by: P Diddy | December 19, 2006 2:24 PM

Diddy, it's not about watching the game, it's about the perception that each Pro Bowl slot represents respect and acknowledgement, especially from other players in the league.

Yeah, it's a popularity contest, but if we're going to be proud when our people make it in -- and I certainly have been, as when LaVar made it three straight years -- we sound like sore losers if we act nonchalant or dismissive when we get nobody in. Just one man's opinion.

Anyway, after this dismal season I don't expect any of our guys to make it.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 2:25 PM

Yeah I was suprised to find that the skins run of the left end more (by %) than any team in the league.

Posted by: Skinz | December 19, 2006 2:26 PM

The last time I watched the Pro Bowl was when that banker dude with the hot wife kicked that field goal to win a million bucks. I still contend: dumbest sports event ever.

test

Posted by: Anonymous | December 19, 2006 2:33 PM

Diddy - Yeah... select an all-pro team but skip playing the game. Too risky for those that make it anyway. Pure $$$ for the league.

Posted by: FromTheICU | December 19, 2006 2:35 PM

Hello, Boofer.

I agree with Jason -- I really don't see anyone from the Redskins getting in. At 5-9, I don't see anyone deserving of it. Sure, some individuals have played well, but this is a team sport, last time I looked. You need to have some success as a team.

I kinda agree with P Diddy too. The Pro Bowl is worthless as a sporting event. (Any idea what the TV ratings are, Jason?) I don't watch it ... I'd rather watch Charlton play Watford in the relegation battle for the ages.

Posted by: Deanna | December 19, 2006 2:35 PM

Diddy, I enjoyed the naked driving story at first, but that coach clearly has a real problem. Or a few problems.

So does the English dude who passed out drunk using a busy train track as a pillow... in case you missed this amazing story, as he snoozed his boot was just inches from the third rail. Happy ending in that he was rescued and not hit by a train.

Gov - Reaper? Tough call. He got the toast burnt many a time on PA's wk 1-11. Although he did knock the snot out TO and that donkey Henderson on Sunday on the bomb.

Posted by: Pub Golf | December 19, 2006 2:42 PM

Diddy, Deanna, ICU, that's a pretty great concept: selecting the all-pro rosters for both conferences but not playing a game.

How much money can the league be making on the Hawai'i expedition if none of us are watching? I bet it's enough to keep playing it. And I bet the players actually enjoy it, a tropical vacation capped off by a touch football game.

I think they'll cancel the Pro Bowl game when they shorten the preseason from four to two games per team. Which means I think this will not happen.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 2:46 PM

Read the article about JC on FO.

the ending sounds almost like a prophecy:

I suspect this means that Campbell will slightly underperform his projection, which for this year is about 4.0 DPAR per game. Still, I expect Campbell to be an immediate improvement over Brunell, despite a decent number of rookie mistakes. By the end of the year, Redskins should be looking forward to a bright future, at least at the quarterback position.

Posted by: thor | December 19, 2006 2:46 PM

What about Todd Yoder?

Posted by: TM | December 19, 2006 2:47 PM

Nate,

Stupid people who live to reproduce are not what i'd call a happy ending.

Just think had all those siblings in Texas not reproduced we'd be rid of the boofers of the world.

Posted by: Skinz | December 19, 2006 2:47 PM

Sellars and Cartwright maybe Cooley and the Reaper deserve it but I don't think any will get it or should. Mediocrity is the description of this season and hence none should go.
Maybe they could create a Pro-Bowl for the short pass no TDs - that'd be a lock for us.

I agree that they should skip the game. Isn't that when they do all those challenges? Didn't some name guy get hurt at one of those in the recent past? A QB I think. Talk about lame.

The only thing lamer is Rothlesberger (sp?) going out on a motorcyle without a helmet. Hey Ben you're a smart guy you're QB of the SB champs wear a helmet you moron! There's nothing manly or macho or cool about gravel shoved up your cheek and a split skull and jaw . . it just makes you a moron.

Wow I didn't even know I had that rant in me. Way to rant my guts out. I'm doing a celebration dance like Redskins Sept-Nov defense. Woo me woo me woo me . . . okay seriously I hate grading papers they make me loopy.

That totaldissaray.com site that had the young ladies from stall 3... that site is DIRTY. Talk crude and unusual. There is a Paris Hilton video on there that I missed in '05 that might allow me to stay single till 08.

Posted by: Pub Golf | December 19, 2006 2:50 PM

Nate - I'm actually ambivalent whether the Pro Bowl stays or goes. Doesn't affect my life one iota. Unless, of course, a Skins player has a career-ending injury in a meaningless game. Alas, no danger of that this year....

Posted by: Skinz | December 19, 2006 2:59 PM

I don't think anyone has yet mentioned that the Pro Bowl has a cherished spot on the sports calendar. It's the absolute final football-like event of each season, the last glimpse of 'live action' from the gridiron for many many months. This is probably the key to its continued existence.

You would think the league might see that the Pro Bowl is an immense letdown after the Super Bowl, which by all rights SHOULD be the absolute final football event of each season. But they know we are addicts and many of us will already be jonesin' for that little taste, whatever its quality.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 3:07 PM

Hey,

Swissham is the only kicker in the NFL who hasn't missed a field goal this year. ;)

Posted by: charlie | December 19, 2006 3:12 PM

Posted by: Jason | December 19, 2006 3:14 PM

charlie, i hate to break this to you but Nate missed a 51 yarder in his first game (as Nicky watched from the sidelines) as a skin.

Speaking of bowls, the college bowl season starts tonight. There are so many games I have trouble sorting wheat from chaff, even among the January ones. (Plus the fact that they don't have a playoff seriously compromises what could be a huge level of interest, compelling storylines, etc.) Any tips?

Guessing a lot of folks on this board will be psyched for the Terp and Hokie bowl games next week. And around here it will be Duck Fever this Thursday and Beaver Fever (sorry, sorry, I couldn't resist) next week.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 3:22 PM

dealer, come on now, I have been doing so well in counseling and working with my coaches to put that 51-yarder behind me.

It was a very windy day, and the sun was in my eyes, and the turf was really chopped up, and though the snap was great (Albright) the hold was really iffy, and my rhythm was off.

YOU go out there and kick a 51-yarder, dude!

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 3:25 PM

dealer, tho vasher is a stud, you are thinking of devin hester (who everyone else is thinking of as rookie of the year).

Nate, given the Sunday middays I've had to bargain out of my wife, I don't think I would even dare ever ask to watch the Pro Bowl again. [We have two small girls, 4 and 2 ... learned a lessen btw on the first that we did not repeat on the second, which was "let 'em cry" to sleep ... if the crying increases in intensity after about 8 or 9 cries, then something might be wrong, go for the children's motrin. The younger is a MUCH better sleeper than her sister because of it.]

I would be just as happy going from the Super Bowl to draft coverage, if not the draft itself. The Super Bowl is a pinnacle of human achievement. The Pro Bowl is a bunch of guys on vacation who take some time out to scrimmage and avoid getting hurt. The Pro Bowl is for the players, not the fans. Hence, the reason why my choices are Sellers and Albright. Even if the team skanked, these two have been 'guts out' guys.

Posted by: dcsween | December 19, 2006 3:25 PM

dcsween, hear hear.

I forgot to recommend "The No-Cry Sleep Solution" as another book in this thrilling genre. Our 2-year-old has not been a perfect sleeper, but we try really hard to keep on a regular schedule and start early. If he's up too late it's all for naught, it's a two-hour fight to get him down. My mom reminds me that I didn't sleep through the night for the first one or two years so I am due this karmic payback.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 3:30 PM

are there any skinsfans fathers out there with boys? i'm a bit concerned here.

dcsween, how you do it man? tell me how the first year with the second one went? do/did you have a nanny(shut up gov!) or an aupair to help you guys out?

and thanks about the hester correction. love the name though. nathan vasher...innhe a reindeer?

Posted by: dealer | December 19, 2006 3:33 PM

just for that jason(of this blog) you're suspended for 1 game (with pay)! cindy, could you work on that please.

Posted by: dealer | December 19, 2006 3:42 PM

I forgot to mention that the 2-year-old in our house is a boy.

He will either love the Skins or have that awful opposite thing, the Alex P. Keaton Problem, where he hates them and loves an arch-rival. I don't even want to contemplate the latter.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 3:42 PM

Although some of you are decent, moral citizens of humanity, most are borderline psychotic, dellusional, pat benatar loving freaks.

My point is, I don't think anyone on this blog should be having children. If you already have, hey, even though I ate at the Great Wall last night, this aint China. You can keep your kids, but don't have anymore.

Think of it as setting an example...imagine if Boofer had cousin, I mean child.

Posted by: Pub Golf | December 19, 2006 3:43 PM

He will be indoctrinated properly. He'll be a Redskins fan (which truly has been a labor of love these past years) and a Manchester United fan, and a San Francisco Giants fan.

If he -- g-d forbid -- supports the Cowboys or Liverpool or Leeds United (sorry, JLC) or the hated Dodgers, he is OUT, I tell you. OUT.

Eight minutes till the Pro Bowl show on the NFL Network!

Posted by: Jason's editor | December 19, 2006 3:52 PM

Whatever you do monitor his computer and internet use. I heard a horrible story about a boy who's parents didn't pay attention and before you know it he had serious mental issues.

Here are some warning signs they ignored:

1. Excessive use of Caps.

2. Rooting for the Dallas Cowboys

3. Using terms like bozo and skinny.

4. Using "hahahahaha" as a subrstitute for periods as punctuation.

If you notice any of that prohibit him access to a computer.

Remember kids who grow cowboy fans dont just ruin their own lives. They are a scourge to all man.

Posted by: Skinz | December 19, 2006 3:56 PM

go Deanna! i think all our kids will have a good chance of becoming skins fans. by the time the newly born-2 year olds actually know what's going on in sports our boy snyder will have learned the lesson of "Best Practices: how to build an NFL championship team, by owners of the past 100 years.". at least i'm hoping anyway.

but what scares me is how much hope and enthusiasm this ONE game generated. this isn't the way to teach danny a lesson.

Posted by: dealer | December 19, 2006 3:58 PM

What running backs in the NFC go? Tiki, Gore and Westbrook? I realize that he has only started for a fraction of the season, but is anyone running the ball better than Betts right now? In the NFC anyway...

I might be missing someone and I think you are judged on a full season's effort, so I guess Betts isn't going to be in. I'd have to think some of the O-Lineman will go...they were talking about them on TV like they were an elite unit.

Posted by: hailfromny | December 19, 2006 4:01 PM

I was explaining to a co-worker who has a child that the blog appears to have been hijacked by T. Berry Brazelton today....and I shared your posts with her. She just asked, "What's a Boofer?"

Posted by: Jason's editor | December 19, 2006 4:01 PM

dealer, I love talking about my kids (and have tons to say about adjustments with a second), but having complained in the past about not being able to participate in threads about heavy metal, soccer, hoops, Glover Park/G-town party life, etc., I think it might be best if I send my email address to Jason La-J (in hopes that he can pass it along to you) to continue that discussion off-blog via email.

Also, back onto the Pro Bowl chatter, it never really occured to me how important Casey Rabach has been until the busted his thumb and thought about what might happen without him. In that FO article (thanks to Skinz!), there was a Gibbs' quote about how both Betts and Portis are liking running up the middle (and it seemed Gibbs was remarking about this out of surprise). Btwn the guards, we DO have a good inside running game, so I'm thinking that if not this year, then maybe next year Casey Rabach gots a Pro Bowl nod (esp. next year with a one-two punch at RB).

Posted by: dcsween | December 19, 2006 4:03 PM

I think Rock Cartright (sp?) should be a Special Team rep to the Pro Bowl.

Randy Thomas, Cooley, Sellers and Sean Taylor also get my vote.

Posted by: FW | December 19, 2006 4:05 PM

editor,

Having blown past 18K, is it out of the realm of possibility that we'll hit the 20,000 blomment mark by season's end? 20K! 20K! 20K!

I'd like to see some fancy charts and graphs to demonstrate how we blominate all other WaPo blogs, in purely quantitative terms (posts per day, words per post, letters per word, nicknames and acronyms per post, etc). We can provide the qualitative analysis as usual.

Do you and J-La get a performance bonus if we hit some big milestones, or just bragging rights in the pressroom?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 4:05 PM

I've been a Redskins fan since I was 3 ... how long ago that was, I'm not telling. I've been a Redskins fan longer than Dan Snyder has been around, and I expect I'll be here after he's gone.

I think I said this in another thread: He really has gotten his money back from the team. In that manner, he's been a great success. But the product on the field is awful, and the gameday experience is terrible (not to mention hideously expensive). That's a shame.

But I still hold out hope that Gibbs will bring back the glory days, and that Kornheiser will rev up the Bandwagon once again.

I think We'll hit 20K sometime this week. Sunday at the latest.......

Posted by: 4th Floor | December 19, 2006 4:11 PM

hailfromny, I think the voting for the Pro Bowl closed a week or more ago ... so its not even a full season's review. I agree with the posts that say that the Pro Bowl is a popularity contest, so without further ado, the Pro Bowl RB from the NFC will be in the form of the NFL-equivalent of a retirement wristwatch and go to Tiki Barber.

Posted by: dcsween | December 19, 2006 4:13 PM

Nate,
We're at 18487 at the moment....I think 20k is totally doable by season's end, midnight Dec. 30. Dealer will have to figure that, though, and let us know for sure. He's the math whiz here.
Jason and I get nothing but a whole boatload of new buds out of this. And I have to say that that is enough. You guys are smart and entertaining. Even Boof.
Our blentries do totally kick blutt at WaPo, but number of eyeballs and such, the computer poobahs tell me, isn't measured by the number of posts. Which is depressing. I mean, it isn't like there's just one loony person out there (Right????) Still, everyone will say that this has been successful beyond our wildest hopes. We do have to totally keep it going beyond the Super Bowl. Jason is going there again this year and presumably will be blogging, as will Maske.

Posted by: Jason's editor | December 19, 2006 4:13 PM

Samuels is in. Very cool.

But hold on, Roy Williams over SeanTay (and every other better safety who didn't get in)??? That is ludicrous. Aaargh.

I didn't know that the roster had already been selected. See Samuels return.

Earth to Redskins Fans:

Tony K and Wilbon are not doing Redskins anymore. Tony is making big bucks on TV. as well as Wilbon. I would think that this would be Wilbon's last year on Redskins' Report. He dosen't even go to the games anymore.....

Get ready for Mike Wise (a poor man's poor man).

Posted by: 4th Floor | December 19, 2006 4:16 PM

All righty, then, it'll be the blog for the blog's sake. Pure enjoyment on almost every level, every day of the week. We're going to shoot past 20K this week and hit 25K by the Super Bowl, assuming that we don't have severe attrition when the Skins trade in their shoulder pads for golf clubs.

4th, Mike Wise is sort of growing on me. However, I find his little head shot photo terrifically annoying, with that smug little sneer of his. He is not worthy to carry TK's typewriter down from the pressbox, but we'll have to make do.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 4:19 PM

Looking at the actual Pro Bowl list confirms that fans vote on name recognition alone. Steve Smith has not had that good of a year b/c he missed so much of it. Same with Julius Peppers. Mark Bulger is NOT a Pro Bowl level QB. Fan voting (with Sprint/Nextel generating a distribution list for solicitation emails) makes a mockery of what could be a legitimate way to reward outstanding seasons by individual players.

Thanks, sween, for ruining the show for me.

:)

Posted by: dcsween | December 19, 2006 4:21 PM

Doh! Was that a spoiler? Really sorry about that, folks.

Dealer - thanks for the offer on the grading of the papers but I love all of you too much to subject you to it. Sadly I teach social studies which means I make my students do extreme things like write and think.

I live in sunny CA precisely because I must have SAD - 4 years in Vermont will do that to a girl. I remember waking up one morning and thinking "My god why is it so bright outside?", pulling the shade and saying "Oh it's the sun. The sun is out. Right the sun."

Nate - college bowls - barf. There couldn't be a more blatant display of greed than the college bowl system. I mean doesn't every D-1 school get in now? It's the "Crazy Eddy Secondhand Appliance Bowl".
Living in SF though we do have a lot of Beaver fever but for entirely different reasons.

What were the Pro Bowl results?
(Seriously I'm going to take us to 100K by draft day because I don't want to grade these flingin flangin papers!)

Momma don't let your babies grow up to be Cowboys. . .fans. . .

Oops. Sorry about that. My bad. SORRY! [More ruining here: the AFC picks seem much more reasonable.]

My buddy from college found out about my daughter and sent me a Patriots outfit just to mess with me...

I have yet to receive any Redskins gear.

It's hard to argue with a Patriots fan. They just kee winning.

Editor - I think you confused me.....

Are you saying we are one of the tops amongst posts, but not amongst viewers of the Blog site?

Nate - I think the headshot is what throws me off about Wise as well. Have you seen him with those glasses? Even worse. I think he hasn't been around here (DC) long enough yet. I'll wait until Full Court Press comes out this season to spurn an opinion........

Posted by: 4th | December 19, 2006 4:28 PM

I was kidding! The list has been up since 4.
Wise just brought in a bunch of cookies, so nuthin' but luv for him today.

Posted by: Jason's editor | December 19, 2006 4:29 PM

Editor - Can we get a guest entry from Wise, then?

Wise - What are your thuoghts of the future of the team? Where do we go from here (I mean the offseason really)? Should we stay pretty much intact or what? Thanks for your opinion.....

If we really go blog wild, we could hit 20K during tonight's Poinsettia Bowl. Whats Skins/Cowboys compared to NIU/TCU after all. Despite rumors to the contrary, the Poinsettia Bowl is not toxic to children and pets.

Posted by: SMACK | December 19, 2006 4:34 PM

We're not sure what they mean when they quantify our readers, frankly. So I think we should just keep blogging our guts out. It has to mean something, doesn't it??? Maybe they just want to keep us humble.
On another note, I was actually looking forward to helping grade sf's papers. Oh, well.

There you are, SMACK. Good to see you. You kind of bring things back into balance; you're the antidote to a powerful dose of Boofrax.

Editor, I agree with 4th that Mr. Wise should come up here and banter with us. A guest column would be great. Excellent chance to show us what he's really all about. Because he's a hard dude to figure out from his written and teevee work, and I think he'd care about that on some level. Or not.

Why have I suddenly starting using the word 'dude' all the time? I am not a stoner, I swear, at least not at the moment. This may be a Dorf-inspired, Lebowski-channeling phase.

Posted by: Jason's editor | December 19, 2006 4:47 PM

The rule is: if a player makes one pro bowl he makes five. Roy Williams is an example of that. No matter how lousy a year he has, he'll get picked based on reputation. Once a player gets referred to as a pro bowler, from then on the voters automatically select him. Same with baseball's gold glove awards--if you're selected once, your ticket's punched for the rest of the decade.

Posted by: mart | December 19, 2006 4:49 PM

one of our o-line should have gotten recognized, despite our lack of offense early in the season and the fact that we played from behind a few times, those guys generally have gotten it done in the running game. . .

guess most of us weren't that motivated to vote or maybe the blog took away from our voting time. . .

>>> "Living in SF though we do have a lot of Beaver fever but for entirely different reasons."

Funniest statement in the history of this blog.

For the record, my subjects are business, fashion, and sex ed.

Congrats to Samuels.

I think it would be hilarious if next year we mounted a serious Internet campaign to get Ethan Albright to the Pro Bowl. If nerds on the Internets can make Snakes on a Plane popular, we can certainly band together to get Albright his fair share of recognition. It would also demonstrate the absolute stupidity of letting fans vote for the All Star team.

Finally...Marc Bulger??? Oy vey.

As we map out our blogging strategy to get to 25K by the Super Bowl, I thought it would be fun to look back on the very first post:

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/2006/08/the_beginning_an_ode_to_spande_1.html

JLaC was effusive about B.Lloyd. My, how things have changed. None of those original commenters seemed to have stuck around, though. That's sad. I was hoping we could annoint someone the Master Commenter for their continued perserverence and intellectual insight. Maybe it'll just go to Boofer by default.

As for "The Devil Wears Prada", I actually loved that flick. It's not so much the story as it was Merryl Streep, who continues to amaze me with every single performance. She is an actress in the old school, serious-about-her-craft mold. I would watch that woman read the ingredients on a Hershey Bar.

sfskin, how many papers have you graded today? if the over-under were at three papers I'd bet the under. this is solely based on my own holiday week nonproductivity. I'm a self-loathing blobsessor. I've been super-nonproductive today.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 5:24 PM

Just remembered the name of that joint: Sparky's. Citysearch says it's on Church and Market. A wee bit off from 16th, but I can hardly ever be asked to remember this sort of stuff.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 19, 2006 5:26 PM

Okay just to share some of my agony and convince you that you really don't want to grade my papers, I'll share one of the essay questions I'm grading. Bear in mind I actually love what I do and love the question etc etc but grading 50 of the same thing makes me what to take a meat thermometer to the eye.

Here goes - be forewarned if you hated history it'll make some of you fall asleep before you hit the third word - it'll make some of you have the "naked in front of the school while taking an exam" nightmare as a daydream.

"Assess the impact of the Scientific Revolution on religion and philosophy in the period 1550-1750."

You have 30 minutes. You must have a thesis and a fully developed introduction.

How about a Pansy Bowl. Hey did you ever notice that there are countless sports teams called Lions, Tigers, Jaguars, and Panthers, but none called the Cheetahs?

Posted by: SMACK | December 19, 2006 5:33 PM

Sorry to have taken us so far from football.

Remember Campbell has been playing all of 4 games so I don't think we should put too much stock in rankings yet.

I take it Samuels made P-Bowl - anyone else?

Posted by: sfskin | December 19, 2006 5:36 PM

And Remember - MAske had Saints at #2 on his 'rankings'. HA!

Rankings are for the birds.......

Posted by: 4th Floor | December 19, 2006 5:38 PM

Samuels is the only Skin Pro Bowler this time. Though of course there will be some 'alternates' to sub for injured dudes.

I am intrigued by this Poinsettia Bowl. Wasn't there a Blue Bonnet Bowl once upon a time? I know the Rose Bowl is the alleged grandaddy of 'em all, but come on, naming a football game after a flower is weird.

As for mascots, Cheetahs is out because it's too suggestive of strip clubs; these players have a hard enough time keeping to the straight and narrow without obvious hints like that one.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 5:41 PM

SMACK, it can't have been the same feeling as when Sean Taylor hockered on Michael Pittman. My first reaction when that happened was "Nooooo, we can't lose Taylor at this point in a play off game!" My next reaction (after learning about the call) was "oh, that seems plausible, he probably did spit on Housh earlier in the season and got away with it." Then I watched the replay and thought "there's no spit there, he's being punished for spitting on Housh earlier in the season and because he is an off-the-field bad boy." Then I fell into dispair thinking "he's been behaving much better, I hope he doesn't go to jail for the ATVs." Then later, ST had the shame to at least deny doing it.

The first I heard about the T.O. incident was AFTER the game when the women on-the-field reporter said that D'Angelo Hall "alleged" that T.O. spit on him. I watched the obligatory T.O. presser and wondered whether anyone from Beat Media was going to confront him. Nothing. Then in the post-game, a few softballs and BAM, the first guy asks T.O. directly, who responds "I did that out of anger and I was a man and I apologized. He [Hall] should move on." Then Deion comes BACK to the question, and T.O. doesn't even look him in the eye. The next day, I find out that the incident was on the THIRD play of the game.

It was completely different ... the Reaper at least showed some shame.

Posted by: dcsween | December 19, 2006 5:42 PM

Strip clubs, that's good. So I guess Spitting Cobras is out.

Posted by: SMACK | December 19, 2006 5:43 PM

Dude, PDX is lousy with strip clubs and other adulty establishments. Allegedly more strip clubs per capita than any other US city. Part of the charm. But not too far from our place (and directly across the street from a school!) is an adult video store called Fat Cobra, which as an evocative and gross name is on par with Spitting Cobras. Like, come on, does everything about your business establishment have to be incredibly nasty?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 5:48 PM

Hey P Diddy

I'll be in Seattle this weekend without a TV.
Where can I catch the Skins game? I'll be in the Green Lake neighborhood.

Thanks

Posted by: CharlieVA | December 19, 2006 5:55 PM

I'll be the first to admit that TO is an ass, and I can pretty much guarantee he won't be back with Dallas next year. But it'll be a cold day in hell before you convince me Taylor is any kind of a "character guy". And I'm from Miami, a huge Canes fan. I actually wanted to like the guy.

Posted by: SMACK | December 19, 2006 5:56 PM

dcsween, excellent breakdown above. I have to say that all spitting incidents are equal; everyone acknowledges that the act is the ultimate athlete-to-athlete insult. But the reaction to both of these was troubling.

(The lesson of Nixon, Clinton and many, many others is not to cover up, lie, obfuscate, or in any way avoid taking responsibility for the thing.)

SeanTay lied about spitting, which I didn't like at all because it made him and his defenders (chief among them was Grilliams) look bad. T.O. admitted spitting when first asked about it, but he dismissed it as trivial. Two different troubling reactions. I can't find a 'winner' in this one.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 5:56 PM

Isn't it against every zoning law in existence to have an XXX store near a school much less across the street?

"Fat Cobra" - for those who like it big and hooded. . .

Posted by: sfskin | December 19, 2006 5:59 PM

Not in Portland, apparently. I appreciate all most all of the city's idiosyncracies, but that one is a little too weird.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 6:02 PM

SMACK - If the paddies go far into the playoffs or even (I'm choking here) to the SB do you think they'll let T.O. go?

I would and I think most would but it seems like coaches et al are so worried about winning that they'll let egregious behavior slide if there's enough Ws. I mean look at Cinci.

Posted by: sfskin | December 19, 2006 6:03 PM

sfskin, you are killing me today. first you took that 'Beaver Fever' fastball I tossed and crushed it out of the park. then you ran with Fat Cobra. nicely done.

Hope those kids are getting the benefit of your apparently good mood. Just reading that essay question made me doze off in my chair.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 19, 2006 6:04 PM

Dealer, did Jason ever get you Biff's info?

Posted by: Jason's editor | December 19, 2006 6:06 PM

Well yeah I don't think you're ever going to see a team stocked up with Mormons and Ivy Leaguers. But I think we will cut TO loose under any circumstances. He's dropping balls, not getting open as often, has that finger ligament issue and is a huge embarrassment. You guys can just hope he's not sporting Art Monk's number in the ol' B&G next season.

Posted by: SMACK | December 19, 2006 6:08 PM

SMACK and Nate, don't get me wrong, I am not defending Sean Taylor's spitting, whether against a Bengal or a Buc; its just wrong to touch another man with your bodily fluids (and in several states, civil assault), not to mention juvenile. I continue to pull for Sean Taylor though -- that he can grow up 'off the field'. [Otherwise he might end up playing for Marvin Lewis or Lovie Smith; man, talk about the wardens.]

Its just in a different category with T.O. He's a veteran and STILL hangs on to being a punk. A lost cause. No hope of redemption. And I think I disagree with SMACK about whether he'll be back. He will because is so talented and its a talent that translates into touchdowns. Jerry Jones has his back. [In that same post-game show, T.O. also admitted a connection btwn that the broken bone in his hand -- and permanent loss of mobility in his ring finger -- and his season leading number of dropped passes.]

What impressed me about the weekend was Deion calling him on it. He premised his remarks with something like "as a mentor". Then he continued the lecture with something about how these things don't stop and can get out of hand and have to stop somewhere. Though I've never been a big Deion fan, I like how he was very clear that this stuff is just NOT what football is supposed to be about.

[Didn't mean to single you out SMACK, but as the resident, respectable Pokes fan (MORONS EXCLUDED!), your name suggested a chance to spill my guts out about spit.]

Posted by: dcsween | December 19, 2006 6:12 PM

I doubt he'd end up in Washington, SMACK; he's not one of Gibbs' "character guys." I couldn't stand to watch him wearing Art Monk's number, either. I'm one of many who's had enough of TO.

Posted by: Deanna | December 19, 2006 6:14 PM

Deanna, though I agree about T.O. not getting picked up by St. Joe, we COULD use a taller receiver. [Note to 49ers: No give backs on Taylor Jacobs.]

Posted by: dcsween | December 19, 2006 6:18 PM

I can't believe how many people think Sean Taylor is Pro-Bowl material. He's barely starting safety material!

The only good thing about him is the hard hits, they do cause the occasional fumble and intimidate the occasional receiver.

But what about the generally terrible pass coverage? Burned deep over and over again. And all the terrible angles on runs, giving up tons of big plays. And the occasional stupid penalty.

Truly, he played much better last year, I thought then he was on the verge of Pro-Bowl caliber. This year, he's been awful. Maybe not Carlos Rogers awful, and certainly not Adam Archuleta awful, but consistently awful nevertheless. A few sensational hits don't make up for all that.

Now if he ever gets his head out of his *ss, who knows...

Posted by: spunky | December 19, 2006 6:26 PM

Okay I'll try to make this my final non-football posting for today but this story is too good not to share. It's moments like these that I love kids and why I teach.

I was just returning from the copy room having denuded a small forest of trees for finals. My collegue/friend and I are walking across the quad and past a group of students and overhear the following:

"Man that is my new favorite word. I'm gonna use it all the time. My old favorite word was b***h a$$ mother f***er but not anymore."

My friend and I looked at each other, burst out laughing and said what can possibly be better than "b***h a$$ mother f***er"? We almost went over to ask but figured the kids may not be totally honest.

So my fellow peepoggers whaddya think? What can possibly top " b***h a$$ mother f***er"?

"He will either love the Skins or have that awful opposite thing, the Alex P. Keaton Problem"

Nate: you'll find that the battle field gets trickier as the kids go to school and all their friends are talking about the enemy, so to speak . . .

true story, last year I braved 40-degree rainy weather to take my boy to see the skins - donkeys (btw this word should be reserved for referring to the broncos).

had him all dressed up in his throwback d.green jersey and the denver fans were for the most part civil (especially the ones who weren't already completely drunk before kickoff).

So half-way through the third quarter he turns to me and asks: "daddy why are we rooting for the broncos?"

doh! hence my quest to get him to a game among skins nation, maybe that will help me start turning the tide. . .

Re: Campbell's Ranking - Leonard has skeewed the stats. You should have added the comments they made on him. They reads as follows:

'He didn't put up great numbers in a big win at New Orleans, but he was efficient and didn't make any major mistakes. He did a nice job of finding his receivers and managed the game well.'

Amongst QBs on this ranking chart, he has the least amount of starts, which is the reason for his low ranking. He will def be in the top 2/3rds before the end of the year.

Actually, looking deep in these rankings, I'm starting to think these people may be a little racist. Jay Cutler ahead of Vince Young?!?!?! Vince Young is 7-4 as a starter. Cutler just won his 1st freakin game this past weekend! Derek Anderson is ahead of Campbell and he never eva won a game (i think) and got smashed by Bmore! Mike vick thre for like 4 TDs and he didn't move up at all! WTF!

Anyway, you guys be the judge and tell me what you think.....

"The Flea" is Mark Addickes, who I believe is a doctor now. Howard or JLaC or someone did an article on him a while back.

sfskin, the essay question would have been more interesting if you asked the students to draw a parallel between the impact of the Scientific Revolution on religion in 1550-1700 and the impact of the Internet on religion and government in modern times. Hell, I'd love to even research a little paper on the impact of a potential discovery of extra-terrestrial life on religion. On a side note, doesn't it seem like NASA "discovers" extra-terrestrial life whenever their budgets are up for approval, only to watch the furor die down after everything's signed and sealed?

charlieVA: I recommend "Sport" in Fisher Plaza (literally 2 blocks from my condo). It's a classy joint and they have DirecTV. I think the 'Skins play at 1pm on Sunday. No idea about the Seahawks. Everywhere will be crowded if the games are opposite one another, so go early and scope out your spot. Apart from "Sport", I'd recommend Fox Sports Grill downtown and Jillian's on South Lake Union. Green Lake is a gorgeous little neighborhood in the summer, and the absolute best meat market in the world on the 9 days of sunshine and warmth in Seattle. I'm usually up there at 8am to go rollerblading when it's nice out.

Oh, and I was born in 1973.

P:

BUZZZZZ!

you were definitely born after 1972 . . .not mark addickes . . .you may actually have to go research the archive while it's still out there . . .

maybe reason for a wikipedia entry?

anyone else care to try?

one clue: the flea was actually a target on a couple of goal line pass plays that fell incomplete. . .

probably the funniest incomplete passes one has seen to date . . .

Oh geez, I did the research, and you're right.

Addickes had his own nickname in those articles though: "The Tick"

editor, no he never got me biff's number.

nate(i think), don't worry we're all skins fans and skins fans help eachother out.

having kids puts SERIOUS hurdles in our skins obsession. we weren't talking about kids just to talk about them. the problem was brought up by a fellow skins fan about sleep and i think we did well to help him and the future skins dads out.

i don't drink and couldn't tell you anything about how it feels except for names...but 90% of diddy's entries are regarding alcohol but it's cool cuz he integrates it with skins and i thought we did that too.

i think it's pretty interesting that so many of us are in the same situation re: kids, significant others...

unlike soccer and heavymetal there'd still be a need to talk about stuff that hinders our obsession such as kids even if skins were doing well.

na i mean bla?

btw, DUDE!!!!!!! of this blog, i heard you on John T's show this afternoon. you should really promote your appearnce here. really please let us know when you're on.

and i'm so glad you're still faithful to the idea of "they need to work on the front office structure like getting someone in there picking players who isn't a coach"...even if JC pans out...PHEW!!!!!

okay editor et all, we need to average apx. 140 posts per day till the season finale...to achieve our goal of 20K for the '06 skins season.

to get to 25K by SB...apx. 155 posts per day is needed.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 19, 2006 9:25 PM

diddy, yeah yeah. you know you're in AA when you're on this blog and not sittin @ starbucks!

about our dale lindsey discussion from earlier posts. here's what i see over the past i don't know ho wmany years.

when he came here he had this trio to work with:
jeramia trotter
lavar arrington
antonio pierce

two of those linebackers he let go. yes, he let them go. made the probowls since they've left the skins. (i don't know who made it this year). the other was lavar...whom what's his name used as a DLineman to get 11 sacks out of him and a probowl year.

secondary coach who left: let go of champ but got springs. (when healthy performs better than champ in my opinion). let go of smoot and did farely well with rogers.

the D line coach has gotten more out of those retread players than anyone could've asked for.

and rocky? 2 high picks in one. rode the bench all year in a lost season. and the other lb's are underperforming except MW. and that's it. MW!

you know what i'm saying? what more do you want to see?

Posted by: dealer | December 19, 2006 9:29 PM

Well, 60% is 120 proof. That's pretty strong. Speaking of which, the Horned Frogs are really hopping their guts in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.

Posted by: SMACK | December 19, 2006 10:04 PM

maybe it's just me....but how can the NFL allow a player that's tested positive for steroids into the Pro Bowl? merriman may be the best LB in the nfl, but steroids has to DQ him from the game. i don't think that's fair.

Seahawks play at 1 pm PST and Skins at 10 am PST so it shouldn't be too crowded. Maybe I'll get my wife and 2 daughters to join me and it can be like old times. Son-in-law can babysit!

Dealer, I just want to represent as a skins fan father with a boy. My boy is 18 months and has a little portis jersey that he rocks on sundays. He can say "fooball" but not redskins yet. Although he will point to any skins symbol and give a "re-re" which is better than nothing I guess since at least he recognizes. I actually got to take him to the Cooker for the skins/jets preseason game after getting free tix from a random guy in best buy who saw my hat and gave me 3 free tix out of the blue. Hey, if by any chance that guy is out there reading this--thanks man!

I have an daughter about to turn 1 yrs old next week and she is already on her 2nd Redskin Cheerleader outfit. She has a redskins sip cup and bottle and bib. And a couple of t-shirts. Good Start, eh? (I use to work by Ballston mall and would go to the redskin store everyday to see what went on sale and then snatch them up).

MY 7 yr old loves the redskins, but right now I'm thinking he likes them because i do. So I have to test him sometimes.

The problem comes down to this - The Redskins have not won a Superbowl in a whole generation! I was 11 when the last won it. My kids don't have the dedication for them with out us putting it on them. I grew up with just my mother. She didn't force football/Redskins on me, heck she didn't know too much. So we shouldn't have to force it on the kids.

No matter, we already have #28 jerseys for her until she graduates high school.

leonard, GOOD F-ing MORNING TO YOU TOO YOU F-ing B***H @s$ M***A F**KA! COME HERE! how dare you say i don't have any football credibility????? I f-ing picked the eagles to win it all this year!!!! f-ing A-HOLE!

just playin leonard calm down! the only credibility i have is that i'm an obsessed skins fan. i watch scrimmages for the love of god!

as for the whole champ vs. springs comparison. i saw springs play like a true "shutdown" corner the past two years for the skins the way champ never did for the skins. now, i'm going to leave the judgement on champ's play to the only guy on here who watches him play every week and that's 8KMSL...and according to him champ just started playing well in the past year.

actually i'd like to challenge that too, cuz i'm the best!...that pick that made the highlight reel last year in the playoffs. that was all on brady. he'd been torching champ all night and just got a bit overconfident there. he had no right to throw that ball.

leonard, you haven't been espnated have you? you're not buying this champ hype right? you're just saying that champ's better than springs right? and not that he's the best right?

ohh one more thing (if you're still reading this BS), comparing me to the coaching staff? i know you're mad and all but c'mon? gibbs forgets more fuball with every breath than i'll ever know.

Charlie Casserly?!?!

I nearly had an involuntary rectal discharge when I saw the word "Casserly" appear on the Washington Post web site the other day.

Charlie Casserly is a loser. His Redskins were losers. His Texans are losers.

For God's sake, let's not even mention this bum's name ever again. He is in the same category as Matt Millen.

I'm all for a GM. Millen and Casserly are not GMs. There would be no upgrade there over Vinny.

Posted by: Mr Casserole | December 20, 2006 11:59 AM

sfskin, to be sure, the $100 billion+ going into Iraq would be better spent here at home. I think the Bush Admin. still has it all wrong even after getting their a$$es handed to them in the mid-terms. I'm quite certain (at least from everyone I know) that lack of adequate Gulf region response was just another in a long list of things this administration has handed with an incompetence never before seen by this country.

JM, I do know that the vast majority of the funds allocated to the "rebuilding" effort have been nothing short of squandered. I was at FEMA for a while before, during and after Katrina and have a littany of tales that would make your skin crawl at the waste of resources...

To name a couple..

1. Approximately 1500 temporary housing trailers sitting in a lot in Mississippi unoccupied because they do not have the requisite suspension structure to pass local building codes.

2. Over 500 tractor-trailer loads of ice sent to the region in standard (non-refrigerated) trailers. Once they arrived, there was nothing left but a bunch of wet plastic bags.

It truly is maddening...

Dr. Z

"I guess you're aware of the fact that I'm hated by this club's ownership and fans. Thus, when I lifted them above four 6-8 teams, including Sunday's opponent, the Rams, in my rankings, it was seen in some quarters as a move designed to motivate St. Louis into uncontrolled rage and a desire to get even. I'll take a polygraph on it ... I was just saluting the Skins' fine victory over New Orleans, but if you'd like me to drop them way down, as a further inspirational move, I think it could be arranged."

I love how all these sports writers all think we hate them. I mean we do but I just like all the egos these days. Just put Monk where he belongs you moron and don't worry about what people think of you.

Posted by: Skinz | December 20, 2006 12:03 PM

I don't work for FEMA and could have told them they needed refridgarated trucks. To me that's a firing offense.....

Posted by: 4th Floor | December 20, 2006 12:07 PM

Skinz - I think its about that time to start a movement.

Last year there was an online petition to put #81 in the HOF. Did anyone sign that list along with me?

We should maybe clog their email or something, I dunno...........

Posted by: 4th | December 20, 2006 12:10 PM

i just read that washtime thingie...so skins are averaging 2.7 bad moves per offseason with gibbs.

i discounted the washtimes thing by 2 because i think #99 might turn out to be a good move and the portis trade. actually i agree that the 2nd rounder wasn't needed. and instead i thought the skins should've been getting that pick. so i'll give them half credit for that work.

so that increases the average to 2.8 bad personnel moves per year under gibbs.

i agree with charlie casserly...i'm sorry i rember him here...he let gibbs pick desmond howard. and i rember him picking an O-lineman in the first round during norv years that never ever played a single down for them...and i think he picked heath shuler too...
no, thank you. i'm happy with vinny if charlie's actually being considered.

Posted by: dealer | December 20, 2006 12:23 PM

I think Mr. Sports Waves made it clear that it is highly, highly unlikely that Casserly would be considered for a GM position in a triumvirate with Snyder and Gibbs, even IF (and this itself is highly unlikely) Gibbs decides to go out and hire a 'true GM' or whatever the title would be -- someone in the head of personnel role which just about all of us think is lacking in this organization.

I always liked Cholly Casserly and considered him a Redskins lifer, as much a part of the fabric of Redskin Park as Bubba Tyer. Ranking GMs is an awfully fickle business. Look at Beathard: utterly brilliant career, and he is remembered as the guy who drafted that moron Ryan Leaf.

Posted by: Deanna | December 20, 2006 12:43 PM

On the Dr. Z conspiracy, you have to admit that he is disliked, but its not for the reason he says (i.e., regular old dislike). Its because he votes with Peter King to keep Art Monk out of the HOF. I thought that I heard recently, though, that Peter King signaled a crack in the veneer and might actually come around to Wilbon's view on Art Monk. King has staked out such a strong anti-Monk position for so long that he might need to find a face-saving way to back down. Also shocking from SI was Peter King's props to the Skins for beating the Saints. Unlike the rest of Big Media, who was bashing the Saints as a crappy team, Peter King actually said it was the Skins who rose to the occasion (not the Saints who sank to the occasion). He said he liked "everything" about what the Skins did and awarded Grilliams his Coach of the Week (plus he credited Brunell for doing a good job on the PRACTICE squad to prep the D for Brees).

Posted by: Deanna | December 20, 2006 12:48 PM

dealer until you take off skiny glasses you have 0 football creditibility! NO CB or S is 100% for every bad play you point out about champ theres 20 good plays to offset the bad!! springs was injury prone(and gets burned like all CBs)before we got him and the combo of being burned & being injured is to much!!snyder was stupid for letting him go,just think we could have champ & springs and not drafted rogers but merriman!!

Posted by: leonard | December 20, 2006 12:53 PM

Peter King has indicated that he will probably be supporting Monk, and I hope that helps swing enough of the doubters in the room to get #81 to Canton. Whether Dr. Z holds out is immaterial to me as long as Monk gets
