Marcus Still Out

Marcus Washington (knee) was not out there for the last big practice of the week. Again, it's unusual for him to have to miss anything, so it must be pretty serious.
Jansen, Rabach, Lemar and Samuels were back in pads.

rock mac gets to play? perhaps a silver lining

Posted by: skinsfan@8KaboveMSL | December 21, 2006 12:55 PM

Can't wait to see RockyMac get a shot. Leave him on the field more than 1 series and good things may happen.

Posted by: FromTheICU | December 21, 2006 12:57 PM

I think we may have to trade RockiMac. Serious problems demand serious solutions requires serious trades.

HAIL!

Posted by: Vinbambino | December 21, 2006 1:00 PM

If RockyMac plays, that means Holdman plays SAM or MIKE. I don't see it. Of the three backups, Khary Campbell is the most likely to start. Though Posey is the backup SAM, I bet they move Lemar over.

Posted by: dcsween | December 21, 2006 1:01 PM

Shizen! Merde! Uh... doody!

Keep him out. No reason to risk a more serious injury. Let's play this one like the JC situation: put out your younger talent and see what we got for next year.

I hope Rocky decleats someone like Kedric's been doing on the d-line and Reed Doughty did last week to the Beer truck guy. Man that was a great hit!

If only Phillipe Gardent could make the active roster...

"I have named Phillipe as my high counselor of war!"

looking for good things to have come out of this season, perhaps a bit early, but hey, just in that frame of mind. . .

positive #1: marrying Big Al's offense to Joe Gibbs attitude - who else could turn a zone running play into a smashmouth affair?

trust me, Denver runs these plays more based on finesse and than power.

I really like what I see so far. Hope we'll see some more since the rams rank 31st in run defense. . .

Posted by: skinsfan@8KaboveMSL | December 21, 2006 1:07 PM

Also, I may become more of a believer IF run D shows up again this week. . .

AMTTS is right, the jackson dude is a beast. . .

Posted by: skinsfan@8KaboveMSL | December 21, 2006 1:13 PM

I'am very excited how our offence has been playing lately but have this fear in the back of my mind that at some point the opposing teams will figure us out and come up with counter measures.

Of course if we have a good passing game then it'll be harder to play against our offence but my question for our football "gurus" on this blog is what's the antidote against a good rushing offence.

P.S.
Please say a little more than "a good rush defence"

Posted by: thor | December 21, 2006 1:22 PM

a little holiday cheer for redskins nation. . .

just had to do this, given the rash of ALL CAPS POSTS. . .

so here goes. . .

IT HAS BEEN EXACTLY 3,645 DAYS SINCE THE COWBOYS LAST WON A PLAYOFF GAME. . .

not original I confess - inspired by Mark Kizla's countup of how many days since Denver broncos won a playoff game without John Elway. Maybe this is the same number of days its been since the cowboys have won a playoff game w/o Troy Aikman. . .

HAIL!

Posted by: skinsfan@8KaboveMSL | December 21, 2006 1:32 PM

thor,

A good rush defense starts in the middle with the DTs getting a good push on the line and being able to come off their blocks to make tackles at/behind the line of scrimmage. Looks at Da Bears... Monsters in the middle. Couple that with a good linebacking corps and speedy DEs and the occasional safety help and man, that's hard to get past..

Posted by: FromTheICU | December 21, 2006 1:34 PM

thor, do you hail from another land, with your '-ence' spellings?

I think the antidote to a good running offence starts with D-linemen who can handle the blocking up front and even draw double-teams, linebackers who stay in position, and in general the speed to pursue (and brains to contain) runs to the outside. And doing all that without leaving any receivers running free downfield in case of a play-action pass.

And maybe the antidote involves having your own good offence which can put together long, time-consuming drives and finish them with scores, giving that defense a chance to rest and the comfort of a lead.

Bucktown, great call on a Rocky de-cleating. It's time for him to start compiling that highlight reel.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 21, 2006 1:35 PM

cowboys last playoff win = Dec 28th, 1996. . .

I wonder who holds the record in the superbowl era? Cowboys are a lock to have a WHOLE DECADE between playoff wins. . .

Gotta respect SMACK, I bet he knows this already. . .

now back to our regularly scheduled programming. . .

Posted by: skinsfan@8KaboveMSL | December 21, 2006 1:36 PM

Sorry... didn't really answer your question Thor... was more thinking out loud... :)

Fortunately, St. Louis does not have such a reshing defense so Betts should be running up and down the field. On the flip side, I hope Griff and Golston are ready for a long day.. But Jackson is as dangerous if not moreso on the outside, because he has speed AND size. Tough to tackle in space and will sometimes just run over a DB...

Posted by: FromTheICU | December 21, 2006 1:39 PM

thor, you just demonstrated how to handle a good rushing game. You as the stout defensive tackle required the attention of two of us blockers -- FromTheICU and me -- drawing a 'double team' on that one play. Nicely done.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 21, 2006 1:39 PM

Hard to believe, I know, but isn't Canada technically another country?

Posted by: P Diddy | December 21, 2006 1:40 PM

HA... nice analogy Nate.

Posted by: FromTheICU | December 21, 2006 1:41 PM

8kaboveMSL, what's the snow depth at your house? And more importantly, did you lay in a store of milk, TP and bottled water in the pre-storm frenzy?

Hope you and yours are safe and warm with no reason to go outside aside from sledding.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 21, 2006 1:42 PM

Damn... now Thor's got me thinkin about how to stop Jackson without getting torched by Torry Holt! Springs and/or Rogers will need Reaper help so who the hell is gonna get Jackson out in space? Rocky-Mac I hope?

Posted by: FromTheICU | December 21, 2006 1:45 PM

Nate: thanks for the concern!

Ive got spots on my deck that range from 36 inches to 42 inches. . .

we are used to snow but this is a bit much. at least this time I'm at home. last one of these I was in Greg's town and didn't get back until a day after it stopped snowing - 60 inches total . . .

still snowing at about 1 inch/hour, but supposed to stop in another our or so, we'll see. . .

do plan on heading out to DIA tomorrow to catch a flight to DC, again, we'll see . . .

Posted by: skinsfan@8KaboveMSL | December 21, 2006 1:47 PM

Good to hear, 8k. DIA is going to be a mess tomorrow; best of luck making your flight.

I think/hope we can contain Holt with a double team and keep Jackson more or less in check with our front seven. A decent rushing day for Jackson would be ok, we just don't want him running all over us. Then we'd have to put 'eight men in the box' and start getting killed downfield. Lordy, we don't need a day like that.

We need solid offensive drives ourselves, time-gobbling drives which confound and demoralize the Rams as they watch Betts and Ducky hammer them again and again for 5, 7, 10 yards a pop. Solid drives ending in touchdowns. Their defensive linemen weeping, utterly emasculated, you know, that sort of thing. Getting a nice lead would help alter the Rams' game plan and diminish Jackson's role.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 21, 2006 2:01 PM

diddy, what do you think of Piperlime, "Gap's new brand name"?

Posted by: dealer | December 21, 2006 2:01 PM

Call me unreasonable or 'accurate', but why in the name of a John Freisz interception would we risk playing guys that are hurt at this point? Shut it down and let the children play! (Cue man with awkward mustache with iron pipe to the back of warrickholdman.com's leg...)

Posted by: ArtMonkToTheSticks | December 21, 2006 2:03 PM

Nate in the PDX -

Are you in Portland? If so, do you follow the blazers?

Posted by: TM | December 21, 2006 2:05 PM

So basically our best defense is a good offense.... makes sense. Let's hope we get all of that and more on Sunday.

Posted by: FromTheICU | December 21, 2006 2:08 PM

TM, I'm new to Portland (2 months) but have been paying a little attention to the Blazer circus.

This is hardly a media crucible like NY or DC, but they are the only pro franchise here (like the Spurs, Jazz and Kings) so they get tons of attention. And they seem to be a gang of lovable misfits, even with most of the Jailblazers gone.

Heading to my first game at the Rose Garden in a few weeks... and going to see the Wizards, natch, when they come to town in March.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 21, 2006 2:10 PM

Some more love from Peter King:

"You know who's playing really well and not getting any credit? Andre Carter, the Redskins' first-year defensive end. He chased Drew Brees all over the field last week, and Marc Bulger will get a sniff of that this week"

Thats twice in one week he's given us praise. I'm not sure how to react?

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | December 21, 2006 2:15 PM

the blazers have some good young talent, could be good in a couple years. Seems like the wiz loose every time in Portland.

Posted by: TM | December 21, 2006 2:17 PM

I think if we can get Bulger rattled and off rhythm we have a chance. Also now that the hair thing is cleared up we can always tackle Jackson by pulling his hair.

The guy is beast but if we can keep him running horizontally maybe we cut down on those yards.

I agree with all above - our O needs long sustained drives with runs that keeps STL D sucking for air but they have to end with TDs. I hope we're willing to go for it this week. One or two turnovers would be nice as well. It's Xmas eve so maybe Santa will come through.

Posted by: sfskin | December 21, 2006 2:18 PM

I hope Brunell has been practicing with the scout team this week wearing a long wig, dreads flowing down to his numbers, to get the D ready for Jackson.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 21, 2006 2:23 PM

He chased Drew Brees all over the field last week, and Marc Bulger will get a sniff of that this week

But probably won't get a sack unless the Refs start calling holding. The Saints game and this week's MNF stand out in my mind as two of the worst games ever in terms of blatant holding not being called. Is Offensive holding a growing trend this year that all the Cool-Kids are into and I'm just lagging behind or ...?

Posted by: Megskin | December 21, 2006 2:29 PM

Ok... at the risk of waking a sleeping dog (and I do mean a mutt of the lowest order), I have to share this...

I was just outside taking my normal 2:30ish smoke break and what do I see?

A Cowboys blue Expedition with 2 'Girls flags and the hated "Star" stickers on each door trundling down 12th St. I dare say a sight would have never been seen in 1991...

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to hurl.

Okay, Steelers fans get a thumbs up for this one. Anyone who takes the time and effort required to calculate every possible (albeit unlikely) playoff scenario for their team is good in my book. Because you know one of us would do the same exact insane thing if the Skins were 6-8 right now.

sfskin, without sacrificing your annonymity what about giving us the "test" that you're grading?

Posted by: dealer | December 21, 2006 2:35 PM

8K sadly no. I'm now doing economics assignments which are in fact making my eyes bleed. Two more days and hopefully I'll be done and have a real break but it's unlikely.

I have to say although I wouldn't trade actually living there the snow storm updates are making me a tad nostalgic.

Of course in Vermont it'd snow then the wind would come and blow it all to one side and everything would freeze and it'd be 20 below and naturally we'd all drink too much and then get stuck in the middle of a frozen field at 2am because we HAD to get to the late night snack place and we'd be crawling across the ice field and then someone would have to pee . . .it was effin hilarious everytime it happened but man we were stupid and man it was cold . . . I think I'll keep my rain here.

I gotta tone it down . . .

Posted by: skinsfan@8KaboveMSL | December 21, 2006 2:43 PM

Megskin, I completely agree. Carter got two huge calls in the ATL game and then the refs shart the bed in the NO game. I can remember at least 2 blatant holds against AC that went uncalled.

JLC, how would the starting LBs stack up if Marcus is out? Redskins.com has Posey as the backup SLB. If that's the case, then Rocky still ain't gettin a start. DAMN!!

Please tell me they will "promote" Holdman to the position of Marcus' dedicated sideline masseuse for the game.

We went 3 and 0
And so now we must go
Take care of the FO

And here is where I posit
Lock Joe, Vinny and Danny in a closet
Until it's draft day
Or they'll blow it on FA's

It goes without sayin'
That we're all a prayin'
Prayin' beyond reason
For a reasonable off season

But based on the past
The Kool-Aid won't last
Unless, wait wow, from the draft they plucker
Some unbelievable B***H A$$ M****R F****Rs

And then who knows how far it all goes
But there's one thing I know for sure
Even if the Skins once again play like manure
I'm glad I've got my super smart Insider bunch
Because . . .sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides . . .

Happy Holidays from your friendly neighborhood crappy a$$ poet who has a deep fondness for bad love songs.

Do you suppose the ishtty calls on holding are part of the overprotection of the QB?

It seems to me like they don't want you to touch the guy which I think just pisses off the D and they go after QBs with dirty plays that then cause injury. I'm all in favor of protection but next thing you know they'll put them in the pope mobile with a window so they can throw.

Posted by: sfskin | December 21, 2006 2:49 PM

agree 100%. i don't think the league thought of that affect(?).

Posted by: dealer | December 21, 2006 2:53 PM

I haven't been paying close enough attention to notice if the holding non-calls have benefited us as much as our opponents. Anybody have thoughts on this? If it's being called the same both ways, that's better than being called unfairly.

Hold up, Bucktown, Parker Posey is Marcus Washington's backup? That is bizarre. What does she weigh, like 100 pounds? We REALLY need to cultivate some depth next year.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 21, 2006 2:54 PM

What does she weigh
:) cute!

Posted by: dealer | December 21, 2006 2:55 PM

We would have won a lot more playoff games, but they were holding our defensive linemen. It's all the refs' fault. Waah waah waah.

Posted by: SMACK | December 21, 2006 2:58 PM

If it's being called the same both ways

Not being called on either side of the ball. And if I can see it without the replay, you know it's got to be blatant.

Posted by: Megskin | December 21, 2006 2:59 PM

SF:

ishtty calls can't b QB protect because they don't seem to be consistent, remember the call against us when one of our O-linemen (rabach) fell backwards and they called holding?!?

Posted by: skinsfan@8KaboveMSL | December 21, 2006 3:02 PM

8K - yeah I do ergh.

Maybe it's like soccah - they'll call handballs if it cause a change in the game or if it's inside the box otherwise they just let it go.
I suppose they could call holding almost every play although Meg's got a point if we can see it on the small screen in real time where is the flag?

Dealer - social studies = economics, history, civics, psych, sociology basically anything not english that isn't math or science. I'll get the questions up in a few.

Er, the more we gleefully prattle on about the time elapsed since the last Dallas playoff win, the more I get that sick, scary feeling they might go deep in the playoffs this year in a weak NFC.

Good grief, can you imagine the angst on this board if they're playing for the NFC title or, gulp, the Super Bowl? And can you imagine the ALL CAPS posts to which we would be subjected? Ugh. Perish the thought.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 21, 2006 3:26 PM

Dealer - 4/5 - you win the steak knives.

Thanks for the #s dealer - going to the draft for a moment from previous thread - why not trade our 1st round for 2-3 lower rounds? The FA market doesn't look great and if experts are right it's a good draft. We could save some $ by not having to pay 1st round prices.(I know I know the FO smokes crack come January.)

Item #2 - did anyone read the Campbell article by HB today? Saunders quotes about "consistent running back" were interesting I thought maybe even a bit eyebrow raising. My favorite though was "Mark (noodlearm) was pretty good at the deep stuff too." Eh? Wha? I suppose but I'm pretty sure there weren't too many DB's out there saying "Ooh be careful of the deep ball we're playing the Skins."
I will sing all praises to Brunell for Dallas game last year though - loverly.

I suppose they could call holding almost every play [...] if we can see it on the small screen in real time where is the flag?

Exactly, the protecting the QB has gone beyond silly at this point: the Peppers hit on Campbell was bogus, tackling AC from behind to protect Brees...bogus, and several plays in which BBM escaped Cincy's rushers with flat out horsecollars by his O-line...again, bogus. Today's defenses have been emasculated; not sure who that would bring joy to, but each to his/her own.

Aight all, I'm out for the Christmas holiday. Don't worry I'll be in some Manhattan bar reppin' the skins to death.

Merry Christmas to all those inclined to such things and stay safe during the holiday travels.

SFSkin,
I thought the same thing about Saunders comments.

Weren't there some rumors that Saunders was ticked at Portis for taking himself out on 3rd downs? Another case of a coach inheriting a superstar he can't deal with?

Posted by: Lavar Walt Clark | December 21, 2006 5:12 PM

Are they gonna LAVAR Clinton Portis?

Posted by: LWC | December 21, 2006 5:14 PM

Did you get some kind of trophy for winning that playoff game? We've won three Super Bowls since you last won one. That's gotta leave an even worse taste than your sister's lip gloss.

When Coke raised it's prices from $0.75 to $1.00 per bottle, Pepsi and RC cola followed by raising their own prices. What does this tell us about Coke?

E. That they can maintain their market domination with a substitue product called "New Coke", sell that product at the same increased price, and then raise the price again with the re-introduction of the old product, Classic Coke.

SMACK,

I was so mistaken....I thought you were a decent Cowboys fan who was trolling our blog....but you are now acting just like Boofer!!!!

Posted by: Lisa | December 21, 2006 5:57 PM

I'm sorry Lisa, can you give me a second chance? I mean, Mark Brunell got what, fourteen of them?

Posted by: SMACK | December 21, 2006 6:10 PM

Lisa - I recommend we ignore all the Dallas fans on this blog whenever they veer into middle school land which means ignore all ALL CAPS. Smack generally is a decent trash talker but he does have his moments.

Why isn't the Post doing their job?????

Posted by: charlie | December 21, 2006 6:32 PM

So I was trolling the SI site looking at some stats and couldn't resist the "20 Hottest Male and Female Athletes"

You gotta go because A - there are some seriously questionable choices for both guys and gals and B - the comments by the models in the right side bars are priceless.

They completely missed the hot action Italian soccer team and the Dutch for the men. I'm a leg gal myself so I'm quite a fan of the soccah playahs.

Okay I know I need to get to grading. But I'm doing my part to get us to 20K by the playoffs.

Posted by: sfskin | December 21, 2006 6:41 PM

charlie,
the redskin fans break those rules more than fans of other teams,so becareful what you cry about!

Posted by: be fair | December 21, 2006 6:48 PM

be fair,

Skins fans only do so in response - they don't initiate the attacks. I know, I have read the whole blog for two months now.

Posted by: charlie | December 21, 2006 6:55 PM

charlie,
you need to take off your redskins reading glasses(they dont work)because if a fan of another team posts stats or anything negative (thats true) about redskins he gets attacked(thats initiating)so once again be careful what you ask for!

Posted by: be fair | December 21, 2006 7:04 PM

SMACK:

LMAO.
No, no trophy just the satisfaction of actually having one a playoff game. . .

Last I checked, your boyz won't be getting one unless they do some serious damage in the playoffs and do you really think that is going to happen. I get hoping, but believing is going a bit far at this point. . .

The reality is that both our franchises have been way sorrier than any of us would like to admit. . .

now back to our regularly scheduled programming. . .

"Announcers: Your unofficial Redskins crew - Kenny Albert, Brian Baldinger with a new sideline guy, Rob Desir.

Last Match-up: Washington 24 St.Louis 9. The Redskins rushed for 257 yards as a team and Clinton Portis scored 2 touchdowns.

Campbell's thrown a TD pass in every start, Betts rushes for a bunch of yards when he gets carries and Moss has a lot of yards since joining the Redskins.

Brandon Lloyd has a catch of 25+ yards in 3 of his 4 last games against the Rams including 2 TDs.

Andre Carter has 4.5 sacks in his career against the Rams and Carlos Rogers has an interception last year against the Rams.
M
arc Bulger is 23-8 as a starter in his career at home. You'll recall that last year's game was started by that Harvard QB.

The Rams are 41-1 since 1995 when they've gotten a 100 yard rushing performance.

Stephen Jackson leads the NFC with 1,916 yards from scrimmage.

Torry Holt has 10 touchdowns in his last past 13 games. He's 3rd in the NFC with 80 receptions and has over 100 receiving yards this season.

This will be Dexter Coakley's 18th career game against the Redskins. He's 14-3 against the Skins thus far. Depressing."

sfskin, love the quiz.

Bucktown, your answers rocked. Very well done.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, and Happy Kwanzaa everyone...safe travels all around. I'll be here in Seattle, holding an "orphan's Christmas" for the kids on my staff who aren't traveling or are from overseas and can't be bothered to get on an 8hr flight to Europe. I'm making my world-famous Prime Rib, an asparagus salad, a duck confit cassoulet, green bean casserole, butternut squash soup, and raspberry chocolate mini-cheesecakes. We're either going to die of overeating, or from the booze accompanying each course. Bring it on :-)

4th - not sure if your rundown is depressing or hopeful.

The depressing part is the announcing team. I've been Tivo-ing for the last few weeks so I've been suffering the horror. I think this week I may be able to see it live and then tune into Sonny and Sam and doofus.

I think we have a shot but I'm pretty sure I'll be feeling like I did with the Saints - how are we going to blow it this time?

My hope is we go over 20 points.

"Throughout his Hall of Fame head coaching career, Gibbs has always been someone who loves having multiple threats to work with from the backfield.

In 1983, the 66-year-old utilized the tandem of John Riggins (1,347 rush yards) and Joe Washington (772) to help him go 14-2 in the regular season and eventually earn a berth in Super Bowl XVII. Of course, the Redskins were defeated by Marcus Allen and the Raiders in that game. But during Gibbs' final championship season, back in 1991, there was the combination of Earnest Byner (1,048 yards) and Ricky Ervins (680) helping lead the Redskins to yet another 14-2 regular-season mark and 37-24 triumph over Buffalo in Super Bowl XXVI.

This year may have been lost weeks ago, but with a healthy Portis and thriving Betts, there's no reason the Redskins' offense won't return to relevance in 2007"

With that being said. Next Year - 14-2 and SB WIN!!

4th - I like it! I'm on your bandwagon. Where'd the quote come from?

Big fan of Brokeback because it's lovely eye candy for us girls and I think Ang Le makes visually stunning movies. Plus it is a chick flick thus I cry.

Seriously we lost to the Vikings?

Hey maybe Gruden will go back. I just hope Dungy doesn't end up there. BBM may be a coach killer but the Raiders . . . there's nothing but headstones.

I can't take no more. I'm out.

Quiz Question for the night (2 part):

Art Shell played football for what College? What was it called then and what is called now?

Clue: It's close. I went there. They do not have football anymore. The school is not in the immediate DC Metro Area, but it is in what is considered Metropolitan DC/Bmore/Richmond Area. I will be home in about an hour and will see the responses. If no one answers by then, I will give the answer.

Good luck to ART SHELL!! He is a stand up man........

sfskin...yes, I'm cooking all of that, though a chef friend of mine is going to help with the duck confit. That's a little bit more complicated, and he's going to teach me tomorrow at his restaurant. People are always shocked that a noted bon vivant and Man About Town such as myself can actually cook, to which my response is, "What? You think I'm a philistine?"

dealer...I learned a long, long time ago that other people's relationships are their business, not mine. As long as no laws are being broken, it ain't my business. It could be my best friend having an affair, and my lips would still be sealed. I would tell him that he's being an idiot, but it's not my place to butt into his relationship. The last thing I would want to do is be caught in the middle.

NFL Network...not sure what the criticisms are all about. I think the Network is great, I really enjoy Rich Eisen's work, and I love Adam Schefter. I think Bryant Gumbel does fine, though his voice annoys me a little. The thing I REALLY like about him, though, is that he isn't slavishly devoted to the "storyline" they devise at the onset of the broadcast and instead calls the game as it happens. I think Collinsworth comes across as a know-it-all, but then again, the dude is definitely football-smart, and certainly football-smarter than nearly every other analyst.

Brett Favre...it will be a sad, sad day when he retires. I don't know anyone that can dislike Favre.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 21, 2006 9:59 PM

I'm with you....I love Favre....it will be a sad, sad day when he retires from the NFL.....and I hope he continues to play.

Look, I ended up here because I live here, washpost is my home page. I look forward to many of the columnists every day, and not just the sports guys. I did not come here to annoy anyone, I was just like hmm, Redskins Insider, I wonder what's going on there. So for a while I only read. And then one of you said the Cowboys have not smacked anyone. I posted a message under the name SMACK saying what 45-14 against Tennessee, a team that beat you at home, is not a smack? So SMACK has nothing to do with smack talk or smacking you all, it just evolved. I love the Cowboys, have since I was 10 and always will, but I don't mind the Skins, having lived here for 20 years, and knowing tons of cool Skins fans. So yeah I try to be respectable, but if the gloves come off once in a while I am alright with that. I won't get personal though. I don't think anyone's really kissing their sister. Sorry if anyone took offense. And no, I don't think Dallas is going to win the Bowl this year, so you all will have your fun.

Posted by: SMACK | December 22, 2006 12:17 AM

Hey Diddy,
That post is a masterpiece. You know what I love about NFL Network is that they are not ESPN. I have nursed from the teat of ESPN since its inception, but I can barely watch it now. I work in TV, so I can perceive the teleprompter when I listen. There is a culture of shouting, of unnecessarily overemphasizing words. Okay Boomer and Tom get a pass since they are legends. Steven A, Michael Irvin, Stuart Scott, I am talking to you. ESPN better tone it down or we should all go over to NFL Net.

Posted by: SMACK | December 22, 2006 12:26 AM

Oh and have I mentioned I'm 100% Dutch, and that my Bergkamp mancrush is second only to my Staubach mancrush. Not that sfskin would still be reading my material.

Posted by: SMACK | December 22, 2006 12:48 AM

I also love the NFL Network.....this is sad to say but once I got the Network I pretty much lost all interest in dating.....it feeds my football passion.

Posted by: Lisa | December 22, 2006 12:59 AM

I lost interest in dating when it turned out all my girlfriends were crazy. Now I just drink. Slim pickin's here in Seattle...the odds are good, but the goods are odd.

I loved last year's Super Bowl coverage on NFL Network. Not only did they continually play samples from "Remember the Name" (a song which I adore), they just had this classy, erudite coverage with some great guests and studio hosts. Adam Schefter is just so darn good at what he does. He's dignified and studious...really, really impressive. And, did I mention how awesome Rich Eisen is? He knows it's just a game and doesn't project this false "State of the Union" gravitas, but he's also a professional and doesn't attempt to re-enact sixth grade recess on the set. A truly great ringleader.

BTW, I'm also equally impressed with NBC's Sunday Night Football coverage (though I do wish Sterling Sharpe would STFU). Bob Costas is a pro, and The Bus, Peter King, and Collinsworth have their stuff together. So much better than the morass of highlights and blathering that ESPN's NFL Primetme had become.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 22, 2006 1:37 AM

One other thing about NFL Network...did anyone catch Steve Mariucci's first appearance on the studio show prior to last year's Super Bowl? He came across as a total moron. Was he drunk? Was he on something? Was he sick? It just struck me as such odd and slightly off kilter behavior.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 22, 2006 1:38 AM

I promise...one last thing about NFL Network :-)

Anyone else watching the "America's Game" series? Holy cow, great stuff. You've got the old NFL Films highlights that you've probably seen a hundred times and practically memorized. But you've also got the legends of the game looking back on their Super Bowl performances and giving you the scoop. If you go up to nfl.com right now, you can see a couple of clips of Desmond Howard (whose time here was a failure, but someone who only a seriously deranged individual could possibly hold any animosity towards) and Brett Favre.

How about Favre tonight? Love that dude. The only two non-Skins players whose jerseys I would ever buy are Brett Favre and John Elway. "This one's for John" still gives me goosebumps.

I, too, love America's Game on the NFL Network....can't wait until the show the Skins one....and it was only 1 year they picked.

I enjoy all the guys on the NFL Network...especially Rod Woodson who has repeatedly stated that nobody should get into the HOF until Art Monk does. He's very pro Art Monk. I was a little disappointed when Fran Charles replaced Eisen as the host on most nights but now I'm ok with it because Fran Charles is HOT!
